As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!
Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.
#This week's flavor is... American Brand Tobaccos (TFA, CAP, LB, FLV, PUR, FR, FW, DF, NETS, etc)!
How did that get to be the FOTW?
It was requested! If you're not interested in the upcoming FOTWs, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that). Please request something more suitable for July than Eggnog; if you do, your request can cut in line ahead of that one.
Past FOTW posts can be found here
The NOTED podcasts, which are basically video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Well didn’t these FOTWs just sneak right up on me. My original plan was to list every Tobacco I’ve tried in the appropriate category, and add some notes on them. The problem is, I’ve pretty much come to the end of my tobacco exploration, and it’s left me a bit jaded. The bad far outweighed the good. I suppose that’s good and bad. Good because there’s not a whole hell of a lot that some people would need to but to get all caught up with having a decent tobacco stash. Bad because I’ve got so many bad flavors, and not a whole lot of desire to mix with them anymore (I also seem to be a bit of a one hobby pony, and have gotten back in to guitar pretty heavy this year, but that’s beside the point.)
So, with all that out of the way, I think I’ll just list some of the good stuff.
Flavorah
Native: In my opinion, Native tastes quite a bit like their Cured and Commercial Cigarette. There’s differences, but they definitely share a base. If I had to choose just one, I’d go Native any day. If we were using perfume lingo, this is a nice heart note. Just a warning- I think I’m going to use the perfume lingo for the rest of this.)
Red Burley: Fantastic base for a tobacco recipe. Deep and earthy. In my experience it can sometimes get a little lost if too much is thrown on top of it, but if you balance things right, it’s great.
Virginia: It’s a lighter one that I like to add for a little hint of leafy Tobacco goodness. I tend to use it in a similar fashion to a tobacco Absolute, but it’s not quite as pronounced in a mix.
Oriental: One of my favorites from FLV, and I dare say it’s underrated and underused. It’s got some of those same base notes that are in Native and the others, but there’s some nicer “spice” notes on top. Not like cooking spices, but like spicy earth or something. I reviewed it.
Kentucky: Yet again, same base as the others, but has some balls. I’ve heard others say this is ashy and smoky, and I don’t quite get that, but it does have something a little dirtier than the rest. It’s got a bit more of a kick to it. Definitely a good one to have if you’re shooting for an authentic tasting tobacco that will satisfy.
Classic Cigarette: What I usually refer to as FA Burley that doesn’t suck. I have to use it with a verrry gentle touch. It gets out of hand quick for me. But it’s nice for when you want to just dump a bunch of DNB in a bottle and add a little something else and live in the glory days of smoking a pack a day (I miss you Camel Lights.)
Sweet Cigarette: I’ll give it a “decent” on a scale of sucks-awesome. I like that it tastes a bit like an ultra light cigarette. I never liked ultra light cigarettes though. So it’s decent.
Flavor Revolution
Woody Tobacco: This stuff’s sex is on fire. At first I think I under appreciated it. Mixed my tester up way too high and tested it too soon. I’m not too sure, but it seems to me like FR are making their tobacco flavors with tobacco absolutes. I have no evidence for this other than the fact that they are super dark and kind of taste like some Tobacco Absolute Virginia. Sort of grassy and leafy. But then they’ve got some woodsy notes on top of that. It’s not super woodsy like you’d expect from something with wood in the name, but it definitely gives me some woodsy vibes. There’s a bit of smokiness to it too, but nothing crazy like FA Black Fire. More of a smoky feeling than a taste.
Tobacco Morning: The other 3 from FR are all pretty similar. Similar enough that you could probably just get this one and not really be missing out on much. Just tastes sort of like a sweetish Tobacco Absolute.
TFA
Eh. If you gotta.
Western: Not horrible. Leathery and kind of funky. I can usually taste it pretty clear down to .5%, so I would really be wanting that note in the juice if I’m going to use it. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like at 3%. Some people seem to be in to that sort of thing though.
Turkish: Gives a pretty nice tongue tickle at like .5%. Not really a solo thing for me. Kinda tastes and smells like a Super Concentrated antique shop.
FW
No thanks.
CAP
No thanks
LB
No thanks
PUR
No thanks
DF
No thanks
NETs
I guess since mine are made in northern Indiana, they are technically American, but they ain’t for sale so there ain’t no point in listing them. Never bought any.
Wow, thanks for the notes! What do you think about FLV Turkish, Connecticut Shade, and Tatanka?
Never really liked the Turkish a whole lot. Only time I’ve ever used it somewhat successfully was that Lime Cigarette recipe, and there were a few other tobaccos in there that hid the things I didn’t like, and just let the stuff I wanted come through.
Connecticut Shade is one that always bullies and makes everything coffee for me. Also only used in one public recipe where I was kind of experimenting with some odd flavor combos. It was basically Brigade plus a hint of coffee and berries. It was weird, but I liked it quite a bit in a MTL tank. Other than that I could never really get in to the coffee taste in vape.
Tatanka is another that I’ve only used once, and that was for my chewing tobacco thing, and I had to dress it up quite a bit with some raisin, molasses, and another tobacco to get it there. On its own it just seems like an RY4 type of thing to me. Good, but not quite useful enough for my purposes.
Orientals in an American thread and no Virginias?
There’s only one oriental, and there’s also a Virginia. But it’s American flavor companies, not American tobaccos. I’d say that FR Tobacco Morning would probably be closest to a Virginia though, if that counts.
I'm not sure if it fits but everyone should try A Good Book by /u/lonesomerhodestn even if you hate tobaccos. Read my (the only) review on ATF for a idea of what its about. Its something very special and develops a lot over time and every moment is fantastic. Make a bigger batch so you can taste it as it develops. A true masterpiece. If they gave out Michelin stars for ejuice this would get 3.

I am super excited for the next 3 weeks of FOTW. /u/ChemicalBurnVictim needs to get up in here and post his nine page thesis that I know he has saved somewhere. Someone should tag Fear too as I don't remember his Reddit name off the top of my head.
This is a link to CBV's FAQ Friday, Getting into tobaccos. It's a must read if you know very little about tobaccos as a whole.
I'll add my meager notes on the few of these that I have tried. I'm not well versed on tobacco because everyone in my house hates the smell of it so I sneak a 60ml of it into rotation here and there.
TFA Western is pretty awesome. Dry, full bodied, mild sweetness that's not overpowering. Reminds me of a Marlboro Southern Cut in the room note, but maybe that's just me. 2% For a stand out note, and I have used it down to 0.25% and still found it in a mix. It's one of TFA's more powerful flavors. It pairs well with other tobacco, caramel, toffee, vanilla, ya know.. the normal stuff. It's also worth noting I recall someone telling me that Western was reformulated a while back so if you hated it three or four years ago, it's different now.
TFA RY4 Double is ubiquitous as everyone's first 'tobacco' even though it's just caramel. It's a lie in a bottle, but it is pretty good.

EDIT: Also I hope someone with StixxMixx experience chimes in to this thread too, I have been reading a lot about their NET's.
I’m going to try TFA Western for the first time this week. Also the new Sweet and Smokey Tobacco from FLV. I’ve tried all of the other FLV tobaccos in the past and can try to answer any questions anyone has about those even though I don’t really speak fluently the language of bacco like someone like CBV does.
I’ve also tried, and been disappointed by, the LB tobacco offerings. I haven’t tried any CAP or FW tobaccos; thinking about what CAP and FW typically do well and where they don’t do well, just the idea of CAP and FW tobacco flavors doesn’t sound like something that would be good, though I’d love to be wrong about that. I don’t want to buy Stixx Mixx for personal reasons but I’m going to break down and do it if people keep talking about how great they are.
> I haven’t tried any CAP or FW tobaccos
I'm too scared. I had some 'house blend' tobaccos from some local shops a few years ago and I know that through talking to employees that they almost exclusively used FW back then. I distinctly remember one tasting like I was huffing the fumes from a mentholated burning crusty gym sock. I don't know why I remember it so distinctly, I still taste it my nightmares. It pops in my head when I think about FW and tobacco in the same sentence now. I also haven't tried the LB options but based on community review, you're not the only one disappointed by them.
I look forward to hearing about the new sweet and smokey tobacco offering from FLV, as well as some of their other offerings as well.
As far as Stixx Mixx goes, I have heard mostly good other than the occasional bottle with particulates that weren't filtered properly. That spooks me a little bit but from what I can tell the company is pretty good about replacing bad bottles and the like.
I feel like these next few episodes are going to be some of the rare ones that push up near 2 hours. I'm sure that we're all okay with that.
I've pretty much tried every single SM variety. His American tobaccos are too weak for my liking (Virginia).
Here is a quick summary of his others:
Pronto - extremely weak. Chocolatey but very little tobacco
Perique - my personal favorite at 6-8%. Shag.
His Cavandish blends - not worth it. Very little tobacco.
The Supreme - second favorite. Great at 5-8%. Great with honey. Great as a NET sub anywhere and everywhere. Used it in that Ruyan custard recipe on ATL with good results.
Honduran Ligero: decent shag but at a high percentage.
Nicaraguan Seco: Same as above.
Turkish Oriental: third favorite but VERY heavy on the shag. Recommend 3-5%
Oriental 456: very similar to TO. I like it as a compliment to other tobaccos at 2%.
Dark Fire: this to me can be used as a sub to DNB if youre looking to add a smokey aroma to your blend. Can go as low as 1% since it is potent. Not quite as smokey as Black Fire but still solid.
A+ Blend: some leather similar to Western. Only issue is that you have to go above 6-7%, which to me makes it difficult to add other flavors.
Burley: too weak to work with
Now, I've taken the stab at La Tabaccheria since their shipping is quick to me in Europe. Premium price of 10 Euro per 10ml if you buy from a shop, though.

Are most tobbaco flavors geared towards pipe tobbaco type flavor? I see all these names and know nothing about them.
Yes, many are. There are a few that try to replicate a cigarette, but none I've tried are very good. I tell people that what I mix tastes like what good tobacco smells like.
> what I mix tastes like what good tobacco smells like.
I want to go to there.
I grew up in the south in the 80s. Right in the middle of my hometown mall was a tobacco shop, you know, the old school kind, with wooden Indians out front.
Anyway, the smell just permeated the mall. Rich, full, loads of vanilla, maybe a little touch of leather, earth. Just... Warmth, and happiness in an aroma.
Man, would I love to vape that smell and place.
All four of those are fantastic. They will not lead you astray.
I guess so, but most (basically all) artificial tobacco flavorings I've tried don't really taste like tobacco (on their own especially. Mixing several together can get you closer.). Some are modeled after a cigar type flavor but I'd say most are (loosely) based on pipe tobacco.
Source: went too deep into the NET rabbit hole and ended up becoming a pipe smoker. Ya know, for science.
Snuck up on me too, u/ChemicalBurnVictim. I meant to line up and prepare some stuff for this week to add to it. u/RockyHarlow, I picked up a few stixx mixx flavors and have barely scratched the surface with them. Burley, sweet brightleaf, oriental, black cavendish, honduran liguero, and American Virginian. I dont have any notes to add at this time other than some first impressions. 1. they're definitely coil killers so get ready to rewick twice a day which is a huge pain until you get used to it. (after that, your regular juices will blow your mind with how 'clean' they are.) and 2. percentages are higher than usual. Flavor is smooth and more definitely does not equal more flavor. 3. Still not sure on steep times for them but they seem to be as flavorful after a shake as later on, but i've been mixing them so small they havent lasted through a long steep.

excited for this ~~week's~~ month's noted!!! (also, I meant to offer up some samples of anything I had that the team wanted to try u/ID10-T so lemme know if there's still time to send anything out) i imagine lemons will be a good palate cleanser for u/mLnikon
That’s very kind of you to offer but the only thing I could think of wanting to have sent would be those NETs and it’s almost certainly too late for that. I’ll probably have them by the next time we do tobaccos.
Damn I’m sorry I dropped the ball on that then. But I do like the idea of March being declared tobacco month. Maybe we should nominate monthly themes for the diy pinup calendar?
Actually, that's a great idea. Next march can be tobacco month again. Let's take a look at some other flavors that fit under an over-arching category but can be grouped together in smaller groups to get their own week and have a DIY pin-up calendar next year. So far we've got
March - Tobacco
-
Week One - Smoky, Ashy, and Leathery
-
Week Two - Spicy, Nutty, and Woody
-
Week Three - Leafy and Green
-
Week Four - Sweet and Fruity
(individual weeks subject to change, I'll try to get /u/ChemicalBurnVictim to help sort out the categories better)
another example might be
January - Citrus
-
Week One - Orange
-
Week Two - Grapefruit
-
Week Three - Lime
-
Week Four - Lemon
Can you think of 10 more?
