> Oh look, it’s an elephant in the room and its name is META. There were, of course, more than a few people downvoting the DAAP thread and, believe me, I get it. The idea was just to collect people’s thoughts about it and to that end, I feel it was successful. There were actually some well thought out responses posted. Now when the topic is brought up, there will be a handy reference to point people to without having to rehash the same tired arguments. Hopefully.
#Highlights from Last Week
- FAQ/BEGINNER Q&A the replacement for the Weekly Questions thread managed to get about twice as many upvotes but about half as many comments. Not sure if that’s a good sign i.e. all the answers are easier to find or if the title just doesn’t attract as many beginners.
- /u/kuri_sanTou Had a near miss and narrowly avoided disaster with his bottle. Mind your caps, folks.
- /u/Axfried has ascended to the next level of mixing and Finally got a mix right!
- /u/ElectricOrangeJuice asked about Other uses for aromas because this question comes up like clockwork and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
- /u/ID10-T was far more than punny for FOTW Coffee and for a flavor that’s notoriously impossible to get right, there are some great recommendations and notes in that thread (as usual but even more so)
- /u/RockyHarlow posted a tribute to Golden Pineapple with Three Recipes and an abundance of development/flavor notes.
Throwback Highlight(s)
- /u/HocusKrokus explained his approach to Recipe Development and while I’m sure he’d probably have a few changes to the final recipe with all the new flavors that have come out since it’s release; the process still holds up.
Quick Tip
- Searching the Sub is not as bad as Reddit’s search would make you think. THIS LINK was created to allow you to use the power of Google to search the entire subreddit and the results are far more accurate. You can also click on the post flair (e.g. “Recipe”) and it will pull up all posts with that flair.
#DIY Podcast Roundup This list will rotate through different podcasts either based on your recommendations or my discovery of new content last week. Only episodes released last week will be included.
##Vaping Trucker
> This is one I stumbled on last week. A guy mixing juice in his big rig. How’s that not interesting? And while my prediction of /u/matthewkocanda making the highlights every week was sadly untrue, through some kind of kismet or YouTube algorithm, The Vaping Trucker’s latest episode was featuring Kocanda himself. So in a sense, he still made the list…
> According to /u/folkart2000 "We have assembled some of the most well-known and talented mixers from our community to bring you... DEVELOPED and DEVELOPED LIVE! DEVELOPED, released every Tuesday at 6:00pm EST, shows our recipe development process in action! It's a short 15 minute episode that's fast-paced, entertaining, and packed with information. DEVELOPED LIVE airs every Saturday at 6:00pm EST and allows the community to get involved in the conversation as we break down the recipe from Tuesday's episode." The show is also edited by our very own /u/AlfredPudding.
##Mixin Vixens > From Emily (/u/mlNikon) "Mixin Vixens is a diverse all female mixing panel on a YouTube weekly show that airs live Sunday’s at 6pm Eastern. Weekly we take pictures submitted by our viewers and each of us interprets the picture and converts it from a visual to a taste. After 4 rounds of mixing we allow the Man Team to critique our recipes and give us hell. Week after week we provide knowledge and entertainment. Month after month after we pick the recipe we want judged the judges come in knock us over the head and there is only one woman standing."
##Noted > The three hosts /u/mlNikon, /u/CheebaSteeba, and /u/ID10-T (and usually one guest) talk extensively about last week's Flavor of the Week. They each try a handful of flavors (or many more than that) and give their impressions while often sharing a few recipes that include those flavors.
#Quick Community Poll
What do you think of the All TFA, FW, and CAP recipe threads? (Recipes that only use one brand) Are they useful? Would it be better if we had recipe threads like that but where one flavor house was the primary focus but not exclusive? Let me know your thoughts if you have some.
I love the single brand flavor threads. Like @OdieDoodah said, I only have access to specifically those houses listed: TFA, FW, CAP. And a lot of the time only a handful of flavors from each one. I have a pretty extensive collection of TFA flavors now, with a few FA & CAP, but the easiest to get is TFA so I mostly buy/restock those. Thanks to everyone for the awesome resource!
I definitely think the single flavor brand recipe threads are useful.. for some people.
I don't think it's a wise idea for those with access to other brands to limit themselves, but it's also fun for mixers to come up with mixes that fit the criteria.
> it's also fun for mixers to come up with mixes that fit the criteria.
Exactly. Putting artificial constraints on a recipe - whether it be single flavor house, the 1-2-3 format, or something even more restrictive - can force creaativity, and making a good recipe inside a set of constraints... Great to accomplish.
/u/HocusKrokus are there any changes you would make to NOT YO MAMA’S APPLE PIE or has it stood the test of time?
Sure! There's definitely some tools and methods that have changed the game in terms of both thought and concentrates. Maybe I'll do a revised development post this week, time allowing.
Completely unrelated, but any news on Mixlife streams? I'm going into beard and bald face withdrawal over here.
Not really, unfortunately. My new work schedule has me blocked out basically from Monday morning at 9am straight through until 9am Thursday morning with just enough time to run home and catch a nap in between shifts. Add in kids, mixing contracts, new product launches, and an extra Saturday shift for the next few weeks planning is next to impossible right now. I'd love to get it back up and running, but I gotta get through this craziness first.
I believe the single flavore house recipe threads were meant for those mixers who, in a fit of not doing things correctly, went out and bought flavors from a single manufacturer direct without researching what they were going to buy. Which, admittedly, maies the chance they would hqve every flavor needed for any of those recipes somewhat less likely, but...
But yes, i doubt anyone would go to those threads to find recipes to order flavors for... But then again, there's not much point in slightly relaxing the recipe requirements for those threads. There may be a gem or two in them, but the whole point is almost...if you limit yourself in such a way, you'll be limited in what quality you can end up with.
Some people don't have access to all the Flavor Houses because of local restrictions - and for them those lists might be useful. That's probably a very small minority - so no need to rehash them constantly, but don't get rid of them.
>Would it be better if we had recipe threads like that but where one flavor house was the primary focus but not exclusive?
Yeah, that one. Like if the focus is CAP, then have the main note of the recipe be Sugar Cookie, but have FW Blueberry as the accent or something similar. I'm also good with the CAP only or INW only threads too. Those benefit those crazy bastards that only buy one flavor house for whatever reason, or those outside of the US, UK, and Canada who have a hard time tracking FLV and others down.
Eh I'm kinda glad my last modest Monday didnt make the highlight reel, didnt seem to be much of a success. At no fault of anyone other than myself, I tried attacking a subject I knew very little about lmao. Fortunately, the comments section helped out with things I explained poorly or incorrectly. Either way, live and learn.
At least when it comes to FAQ Friday I like to look at it as a whole instead of any one post. Some topics just aren't going to be as interesting on their own or to a general audience but when someone with that specific question or interest comes along or someone reads through the whole series, it's good that they can find the info.
