Can I use saran wrap to cover a cup while juice is steeping inside of it, or is that not sealed enough?
submitted over 6 years ago by Weastie37

I'm trying to find ways to mix large amounts of juice in a separate container and transfer it to bottles via a funnel because my bottles have very small openings and I often spill VG especially.

I tried mixing in a water bottle and capping it off, but after I poured it I realized I lost like 5mL that is stuck on the inside and its hard to get out.

So I want to try using a traditional V shaped cup (something like a red solo cup), because I would be able to better scrape out the remainings.

However, I know that I read on multiple FAQ's and tutorials that you should not steep ejuice with an open lid (except for specific recipes).

So, if I cover something similar to a red solo cup with saran wrap, is that enough? Or is it still possible for too many molecules to interact with the outside environment?

If you're concerned about losing some while transferring have you tried holding back some PG in order to rinse the container once you have emptied it; if you made 70/30 for example you could add 10 to the mix and transfer... then add the remaining 20 percent, swill and transfer that too?

That's a good idea if I was transferring it all into one bottle but I planned on transferring it to like 3 different bottles so I don't know if that method works. I totally get what you mean though because PG is a lot like water so it would be good for rinsing the rest of the bottle.

I mean, it's not exact but give it a go? You could even test the three and see if there is a discernable difference in flavour... I don't think it would be an obvious one tbh

Mix what you want in the water bottle, when done steeping cut bottle in half and use a syringe?

I've heard of people using mason jars. You should get some. That'd be a lot better than a kegger cup with saran wrap seal IMO. Those jars have lids that seal tight.

I have been in the resteraunt industry for years and I don't think I've ever heard it called that

It's a brand name that made it into normal vocabulary in America. Like Kleenex or Xerox or bandaid. They all have different names and some people use the proper name, not the brand name, like me

I say: Plastic wrap or clingwrap, tissues, copy machines, bandage, etc.

It bothers me that we do that here. But maybe other countries have similar things go on.. not sure.

Suranwrap . Thats what I'll hear or plastic wrap. Never cling. This is in the western usa. Doesn't mean it's not said just because I never hear it.

Easiest way I've found is do big batches of all your flavors at 0 nic and then nic bottle to bottle

I do 500ml batches and keep about 4 ltrs of juice on hand.

Condiment bottles. Not only will a small spatula fit in the opening to scrape the sides, if you need, but the lids are sealable, and allow you to fill bottles without a funnel.

I got a bunch of empty 500ml ketchup bottles with a nipple on the end at walmart for $1.00. I put my vg in it so I can dispense it easier. I imagine this working well for you

Yo how about this: run to Ikea and grab yourself one of those cheap $2 glass jars with the sealing lid. Then you can store it away without worrying that it may crack or leak.

As that is not a good enough seal, that's probably not a good idea. Get larger bottles or make separate batches.

It's very possible certain flavors could crack the plastic. I don't see the benefit in using solo cups.

You can just heat up the bottle with a hair dryer after putting out the juice. Then the rest will be more fluid due to the heat and can easily be poured out.

I suppose that if the rest of the juice gets warmed to something like 40 degree Celsius, it should not influence the whole mix, since it's only a fraction of The total amount of juice. But it will be a lot more fluid at that temperature.

I do that when I mix a liter of juice, since I buy 100%vg freebase nic which is available only in 10ml plastic drippers and only 18mg/ml (thanks tpd2) concentrated. By warming it, it is less a p.i.t.a. to pour 8 10ml bottles into a mix .

I use mason jars to mix in, (I like mixing by weight) and then after steeping time I use a 30ml syringe to transfer to my bottles, if there is a little bit left I have tiny funnels I’ll use to transfer the last few drops to my bottles. Hope this helps!

Why not just mix straight into the bottle using a funnel?

Old scale works for me (former smoker) then I use a syringe for nicotine.

I think you may have lost sight of the bigger picture. Even in today's marketplace you can easily pay $20-30 or more for 100ml of juice. If you mix your own juice, you can make 1000ml for $2-4 in bases, $2-3 in flavors, and maybe $1 in nicotine. You can buy ldpe 30ml cheapo bottles for $.25, and much nicer unicorn style or otherwise for less than $1. You can buy 500ml or 1000ml bottles for a couple bucks each at most. So assuming we're making 1000ml @ $8, putting it in a 1000ml pet cosmo bottle ($2) to steep, and filling a few ldpe unicorns as needed, we are spending half the cost of a single 100ml retail bottle for 10x more juice. You start trying to steep in a Dixie cup and it goes south or gets contaminated, then your $8 liter just cost you $16. It's worth the money to do it the right way. Just buy whatever you need, stop pinching pennies. Washing out old beat up carry bottles is for losers with more time than brains. Saving a few bucks by buying cheap nicotine saves you almost nothing in your mixed juice. The only place you should even be concerned about shopping around is on bases, because the bulk of your cost is there. Cling wrap? Come on man...

Actually, bottles can be the biggest expense. (Although really, shipping costs for everything involved is possibly the biggest expense.)

Not really. Bottles are cheap. If you have to have chubby gorilla branded bottles, they are a bit more, but still pretty cheap. It might not be true outside the USA, but in the USA I can buy generic ldpe bottles for as little as like 10 cents each.

Up here it depends where you buy, of course, but bottles can run up to a buck each, and then theres shipping. I got 30ml bottles for about ten cents including shipping from alibaba or one of those, but while the bottles were fine the tips were oversized... Similar bottles from decent suppliers (and with tips useful for vaping) run thirty to thirtyfive cents each before shipping up here.
