May have to take advice about these with a Granola Salt, but take some time Oat for this Flavor of the Week: Oatmeal and Granola!
submitted over 6 years ago by ID10-TThe Kingmaker

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic. Cartoons By The Oatmeal are on topic this week, FYI

#This week's flavor is... Oatmeal and Granola

How did that get to be the FOTW?

Honestly? Cookies week had too many flavors so I broke off all the choco ones and gave them their own week.

But usually they are requested! If you're not interested in the upcoming FOTWs, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that). Please request something more suitable for June than Eggnog, if you do, your request can cut in line ahead of that one.

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are basically video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Next week's flavor will be: Coffee

The week after that will be: Pomegranate

The week after that will be: American Brand Tobaccos (TFA, CAP, LB, FLV, PUR, FR, FW, DF, etc)

The week after that will be: European Brand Tobaccos (FA, INW, GF, JF, BF, etc)

The week after that will be: Asian Brand Tobaccos (HS, FE/SC, Reka, etc)

The week after that will be: Lemon

The week after that will be: Hard Candy

The week after that will be: Donuts

The week after that will be: Boysenberry

The week after that will be: Popcorn

The week after that will be: Pistachio

The week after that will be: Nut Mixes and Mixed Nuts (Macadamia, Walnut, Cashew)

The week after that will be: Anise and Black Licorice <--- I hate you OdieDoodah

The week after that will be: Exotic Spices and Spice Blends

The week after that will be: Plum

The week after that will be: Eggnog <--- date on this one might get moved down

I actually got a couple of recipes that I have been working on over the past couple of months that use the popular flavors in this category, they aren't done yet but I'll be happy to share where I'm at since whenever I do lock them down I plan on posting them anyway. Any suggestions or feedback on my notes would be cool, I don't get a lot of time to mix so my process can be crazy slow.

Pardon My Fait (Revised) 4a
Mixed at 70vg/30pg
Current testing steep time: 10 days

MFG|Flavor|% :-:|:-:|:-: FLV|Boysenberry|1 PUR|Boysenberry Preserves|2% FLV|Granola|0.5% CAP|Greek Yogurt|2% DFS|Holy Vanilla|1% WF|Oats and Cream SC|2 CAP|Super Sweet|0.25% FA|Yogurt|3

This is a reiteration of one of my old recipes from a while back. I wanted to make a yogurt-based parfait over a custard one. I know FA Yogurt sort of gets a bad rep, but I think when used with the right flavors can provide a really great yogurt texture and flavor without the dirty socks note that a lot of people get in the new version. Previously I was using FLV Cream in this with the yogurts and creams to try and help with taste and mouthfeel but I found that it was muting the boysenberry a bit so I dropped it in this latest version. I'm really trying to capture a creamy yogurt that has jammy boysenberries and granola in it.

WF Oats and Cream SC was a godsend, the second I started playing with it I immediately ordered a 2oz bottle. WF Oats and Cream seems to work really well with FLV Granola and RF Oatmeal Cookie SC. With FLV Granola it helps calm the cranberry note and also supports the granola flavor from being a bit dry into a pleasantly tasty granola, almost like having granola in a bowl of milk.

WF Oats and Creams combo with RF Oatmeal Cookie FC has already been proven to be awesome by Tootall's SMOOTH. I wanted to incorporate it into a recipe that I had been working on based on Folkart's Oatmeal Cream Pie recipe. Here is where that is at.

Oatmeal Cream Pie 3b.1I
Mixed at 70vg/30pg
Current testing steep time: 10 days

MFG|Flavor|% :-:|:-:|:-: TPA|Bavarian Cream|1.5 FA|Cookie|1.5 CAP|Gingerbread|0.75 OOO|Marshmallow (vanilla)|0.66 RF|Oatmeal Cookie SC|2.5% WF|Oats & Cream SC|2 CAP|Super Sweet|0.25% TPA|Vanilla Swirl|0.5%

The main problem I have been having with this recipe is trying to get everything to balance right. Some batches the filling is spot on, with the creamy and slightly marshmallow notes coming through perfectly and the Oatmeal Cookie/Oats&Cream coming through great, but the notes from CAP Gingerbread fail, or CAP Gingerbread gets too strong and then I can only taste the cookie part and not the filling. This is the latest version that I have steeping right now. I recently swapped out Holy Vanilla for Vanilla Swirl to try and see if the brighter vanilla and creamy notes would help support the rest of the filling (I might take it up to 1% depending on how this batch turns out), with just a bit of CAP SS to see if that would help keep the CAP Gingerbread from taking over the rest of the recipe.

Do with them as you will, and if you have any suggestions I'm open to them.

Great post. Are you saying that this recipe is for the newer FA yogurt or the older unattainable version?

Really good post mate - quite interested in these two! With the Holy Vanilla/Vanilla Swirl conundrum, have you thought about trying WF Vanilla Cream Extra? Big thickness/mouthfeel and a brighter vanilla than Holy. I'd start it off same as the Vanilla Swirl @ 0.5% as it can be a little domineering.

That is a great idea.I hadn't thought of trying Vanilla Cream Extra. I'll write that down for another batch to try. Thanks!

Think FA Breakfast Cereal could be added to the list it has grainy oat thing going on similar to Granola

I don't want to say you're wrong. I just have a different view of It. I don't get any of that. I just get mostly malt flavor with a hint of chocolate. It reminds me of Whoppers candy kind of but not crunchy.

Looking forward to this! I've been trying to make a honey bunches of oats but I have nothing for the oat clusters and dont even know what would come close to it.

FA Morning Sun, YMMV. I think it tastes like fresh cut stone fruit in a granola like cereal with milk, but not as much milk as I think there should be. My bf swears it tastes like an apple Nutri Grain bar. He also thinks Hypnotic Myst tastes like mini colored marshmallows tho lol.
