Weekly Questions Thread - Week of February 11, 2019
submitted over 6 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This thread is meant for beginner questions or simple questions where a whole post/discussion isn't necessary. Any and all questions are allowed/encouraged here. To get started check out the DIY Beginners Guide and the links below then feel free to ask about anything you’re still not clear on.

#Sidebar Links

This list covers most of the commonly used vendors and shows which DIY supplies they have available. Vendor reviews are posted weekly and linked in this list next to the vendor.

Great advice on how to place your first order, what to watch out for, and how to get it done on a budget.

This is a simple yet comprehensive breakdown of a hypothetical first order than includes everything you need and explains exactly how much you can get out of your first order.

A list of flavors voted on by the community as the best/most versatile for a first order along with several recipes you can start out making with them.

If your juice is harsh, it's likely one of the reasons listed in this guide.

If you've got your eye on a flavor or have a flavor on hand and want to learn more about how to use it or where to start, chances are it has been reviewed.

These posts tackle some of the persistent myths around Steeping, Venting, Sweeteners, Complex Recipes, Substitutions and more...

Posting your recipe to the Monthly Recipe Thread is encouraged but if you want to post to the front page, this post will give you a good idea of how to format your post and the kind of details/notes that should be included.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

The juice is clear, but in direct sunlight it glows a strong purple/blue (sometimes it's one sometimes the other), and it's pretty dang neat.

Just sayin'.

Is there a specific guide on working with VG or alcohol based flavors?

1 points

by Ceferinoooover 6 years ago

As in percentages into the recipe?

1 points

by slingeronlineover 6 years ago

As well as steep times, etc. I know they are different from PG based flavors and advice for PG based is everywhere. But for the flavors that are not PG based there is little to nothing.

1 points

by Ceferinoooover 6 years ago

I can help you with percentages, if you take blue raspberry by liquid barn (67%VG/ 33%PG) and you’re going to mix at 10%. Multiply each perecentage by 10, so 10 times .67 =6.7 and 10 x .33 = 3.3..... on ELR you can choose what the carrier of the flavoring is so you’d put the Vg (6.7) and Pg(3.3)

Sorry I’m on mobile so forgive my formatting. As for steeping, I don’t believe it would be any different. But I haven’t been in the DIY game to long so I’m not sure. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Hey everyone! Just placed my first order and am wondering if there’s any good simple recipes that go well with tpa toasted marshmallow and cap vanilla whipped cream. I have a few recipes in mind already for when my order arrives (and was considering just seeing how the toasted marshmallow tasted solo) but wanted to see if anyone here had any suggestions!

Is there a decent sub for the CAP Lemon Lime in 1-2-3 Cranberry Sprite? I have a lot of lemons and a few limes.

https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/86917

edit: Actually, I just bought the CAP but I'll leave the question for curiosity's sake and in case anyone else wants to know.

1 points

by kindgroundover 6 years ago

There really isn't. It's basically the sprite base here as that's exactly what it tastes like. It's a watered down lemon lime just like sprite.

You just made me feel better about making that purchase! Glad I went for it.

I can't taste strawberry aside from the first pull after a bit of a break. I have tried a bunch of different strawberries, and since I was placing a new order for flavors, I searched and found this comment regarding /u/ID10-T's Holy Trinity of Strawberry (Shisha Strawberry 3%, Red Touch 2%, JF Sweet Strawberry 1.5%).

I ordered the above flavorings in the link that I was missing (Red Touch, Sweet Strawberry-JF)... my question is, should I sub at those percentages in recipes that have other strawberry flavorings?

For example:

Mother of God's Milk

2% Bav Cream TPA

4% Dragonfruit TPA

~~3% Strawberry TPA~~

~~2% Strawberry Ripe TPA~~

2% Red Touch FA

3% Shisha Strawberry INW

1.5% Sweet Strawberry JF

3% Vanilla Swirl TPA

I plan on mixing a small bottle of just the 3 combined strawberries to see how they work for me, but I would love to revisit some of the other recipes that I have used that contain strawberry.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 6 years agoThe Kingmaker

It depends on whether strawberry is one of the main flavors or just what role strawberry is playing in the recipe and how it's interacting with the other stuff involved. Basically, it's going to vary every time and sometimes will work great and sometimes not work at all. You might need to use less, or more, or a different balance of those strawberries (provided they even work for you).

In the specific example you gave, those look like pretty good numbers. I might adjust the Bav Cream up to 3% and drop the Dragonfruit down to 3% before mixin that up, just on a hunch that the creams might suffer a bit under all that strawberry and that the dragonfruit isn't as necessary with the Stb Trinity as with the TPA strawberries.

I hope those work for you. It makes me sad that some people can't enjoy strawberry flavors.

Thanks for responding. I get what you’re saying. I think some experimentation is in order. Maybe even just small batches of and individual strawberry side by side with a plain vg. Maybe it’s possible to retrain my taste buds. Idk.

Even if it never works out, and while it would certainly be nice to consistently taste strawberry, there are plenty of other great mixes out there that I can taste thanks to people like you.

Just wanted to update. I got a new rta, Kylin 2, (was previously using an old sense herakles, along with many other tanks before that, quite a few rda’s as well) I put in some mother of gods milk (actual recipe, not the discussed substitutions) and I have been tasting strawberry pretty consistently. It’s not very strong, but distinctly strawberry. To me it’s amazing, because the entire time I have been vaping (since 2012) I have never tasted strawberry outside of the initial pull. I am amazed. Hopefully it sticks and I can revisit some other recipes that I moved on from so I can taste them how they were supposed to taste. Crazy.

Is Flavor West "Natural Blood Orange" the same as "Blood Orange"?

PS I hate it when flavor companies put 'natural' in their flavor names. It makes me think there will probably be chunks of plant matter or other unvapable stuff (oils, etc etc) in the flavor.

1 points

by kindgroundover 6 years ago

Flavor West only has one blood orange that's vapable. The other has OS (oil soluble) in its name.

1 points

by Apexifiedover 6 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

It does have orange oil but that is typically limonene which is not a lipid and as safe as anything else we vape.

No, they usually ship out extremely fast. I’m not sure if they’re still backed up from their holiday sales but typically they’re not.

Looking for a punch (drink) flavor that’ll go good with peach, apple, and strawberry. Any recommendations?

1 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Well, you'd want something strong enough to cover up the horrible tastes of strawberry or peach, but would go with apple.

Something that tastes rather like fireball would maybe do the job. For that, a mix of FLV Fire Cinnamon and VT Bourbon would be a start.

FW Beetle Juice might fit the bill. Not a 'drink' concentrate... It's a tropical- ish fruit blend. Works pretty well as a main note and would probably play nicely at a lower % with the other flavors you mentioned.

I'll be trying out Alpine Strawberry for the first time soon. What wonderful things should I expect from this bottle of liquid gold?

3 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

It will, unfortunately, taste like strawberry. If you're normally fortunate enough to not taste strawberry, it will inflict strawberry on you regardless.

1 points

by ironfairyover 6 years ago

I've heard even you get along mildly well with this strawberry! Based on that alone I have high hopes for it. I'm not opposed to strawberry personally, but after the 100th variation of strawberries and cream they got pretty old.

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Who's been spreading lies?

I don't like actual strawberries. Anything that tastes like them would be, by definition, bad.

1 points

I need to get some of this Alpine Strawberry. Every strawberry I've tasted is kaka 0/10, nothing tastes like strawberries!~ They should all be called Candied Chemical Weirdness (Strawberry).

Just started mixing. I don’t understand the hype around flavors?? For a while I was just using pure VG, just practicing tricks and stuff. Finally ordered some PG and some sweet guava, mango, and double apple flavors from capella. I’m using 90/10 VG/PG with about 10% flavors. But at that level I don’t notice any change to the taste. And when I add more it just tastes weird and chemically, not at all like the flavor it’s named. I was expecting to notice them a lot more, what with all the lists of best flavors and recipes and things. What am I doing wrong?

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 6 years agoI found my thrill on Blueberry Hill

If you are mixing each flavor at 10% you are doing it incorrectly. You can't just pick a random amount and use it for each flavor.

1 points

by sadistic_tendenciesover 6 years ago

Way too much flavoring, likely using airy cloud focused attys. I suggest reading the guides and faqs listed in this thread.

1 points

by kuri_sanTouover 6 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

Sweet Guava (CAP)? Use that at 4%. If you can get your hands on some Cactus (INW), add 1% to the batch

Hey guys, question about citrus flavours and plastic cracking/melting : i see on ELR warnings on potential plastic corrosion for example on FA Lemon Sicily but the concentrates are themselves contained in plastic containers. I assume it is only 1 particular type of plastic compound that reacts badly to citrus flavouring, any ideas which ones are safe to use with them? (PET, PE, PC, Sillicon...)

Thanks !

2 points

by kuri_sanTouover 6 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

>but the concentrates are themselves contained in plastic containers

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is used for bottles. That's different than plastic.

Thank you, my juice bottles should be fine, i just hope my glass bottle caps (from a DIY make up store) are too lol

That was the old 'clearomizer' days mainly

Crap lil pen units

2 points

by kuri_sanTouover 6 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

Should be okay, there's a rubber gasket seal lining the cap. That warning is mostly reserved for plastic tanks. I've never seen a plastic tank probably because they don't make them anymore. I'd say all tanks nowadays are made of glass or pyrex. I think the old Cartomizers and Clearomizers were made of plastic

2 points

by kindgroundover 6 years ago

Tanks are usually some sort of acrylic. Flavor bottles are typically PET and LDPE.

This question might be dumb, but I have to make sure^^ :)

If I mix 10ml already mixed juice with nic salt 10ml (20mg) 1:1. The finishing product would have 10mg nic, correct? So I would need to mix 1:2 to get the same strength as the nicotin shot, right?

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Yes.

Yes.

No.

(Yes, it's a stupid question; yes, your first calculation is correct; no, you can't convince the universe to give you free nicotine - adding a lower-nic-content juice to any number of nicotine shots will reduce the nicotine concentration to less than the shot has.)

1 points

by Halsonaleover 6 years ago

So, I gotta mix 1:2 or with 40mg, got it. Thanks :)

1 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Mixing a no-nic juice with nic shots of 20mg/ml @ 1:2 will result in 13.3333333333333(you get the idea) mg/ml concentration. Using 1:1 with 40mg/ml instead will give a result of 20mg/ml.

Basic explanation - multiply your nic concentration ( measured in mg per ml) by your quantity of nic added(in ml) to determine totam nic content( in mg). Divide that by total volume of juice(in ml) to determine total concentration( in mg per ml).

1 points

by kindgroundover 6 years ago

You are correct. Depending on what base your nic shot is in you won't have much control over the pg/vg percentage.

1 points

by Halsonaleover 6 years ago

How much is 20mg nicotin salt as normal nicotine base?

I want to buy some prefilled pods for a pod system and the nicotin strength is 8 or 16 mg and I used to fill the pods with a 20mg nic salt juice.

1 points

by mixmintressover 6 years ago

Nicotine salts and regular nicotine can be substituted at the same level as far as I know; I'd go for the 18 mg if you're used to the 20mg.

1 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

This is sorta true. The salts are far easier to vape.

1 points

by mixmintressover 6 years ago

'Tis true. The only time I've ever gotten myself really nicotine-nauseous was chain-vaping or whatever we call it, when I first got salts in. It is VERY easy for me not to notice how much I'm taking in with them. Plus I kinda just like the dirty old-style nicotine.

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 6 years agoI found my thrill on Blueberry Hill

Unsure of your question. Nicotine concentration does not increase or decrease just because of the type of base.

1 points

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 6 years agoI found my thrill on Blueberry Hill

1 points

by Apexifiedover 6 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

For NicRiver in general you can check out their vendor review

1 points

by Halsonaleover 6 years ago

So I have a BO One pod system, which apparently has 1.8 Ohm.

I always refilled the pods with 20mg nic salts. But I now need new capsules and there is 8mg or 16mg normal nictorine as a choice. Do you think 16mg normal nic would be too much and I should go for the 8mg? I am unsure, because I usually only vape every other weekend when going out.

Normally I smoke Marlboro red, which should be 12mg, but as there is no 12..

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 6 years agoI found my thrill on Blueberry Hill

I'm assuming this isn't a diy question. But go with the 8

1 points

by kindgroundover 6 years ago

16mg freebase nic is definitely going to be a good bit harsher than 20mg nic salts. Nics salts hit you harder too. They seem to absorb faster than freebase.

I'm messing around with one of Wayne's recipes (Quik) and I loved the one shot when I started, so I decided to purchase the flavorings little by little. This past weekend (Saturday) I mixed up a bottle and have been letting it sit until last night, and it tasted extremely peppery. I got the same note from another juice I used TFA Vanilla Custard in, so I think that is my suspect. The weird question I have is, why did the one shot taste amazing and this has that taste?

Does it need to steep longer, and the pepper will go away?

Do I have a bad batch of TFA VC possibly?

Is there something I can substitute it with?

Neither of those works great as a standalone flavor but you can check All The Flavors & E-Liquid Recipes to see the average percentage people use. ELR also shows you the percentage people prefer standalone.

I'm new to DIY. Any recommendations on mixing tobacco + nuts + some fruit, no creams / butters. I like hazelnuts / almonds and cherry (though from what I read, it's hard to get right, so willing to try something else). From tobacco i like commercial Classic Tobacco from Liqua, RY4 is also nice.

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Marzipan is a good addition for a dessert tobacco. My recent recipe Monkey Nuts (in Feb recipes) is a good example.

Also, you may want to consider adding spices like cinnamon or ginger to your tobacco.

I find banana, coconut, apple, and dark berries work with tobaccos (it depends on which tobacco you choose to know which fruit will work best).

1 points

Try my Adios Mother F#cker. It's a coffee nut RY4 that's pretty good. I'm a little biased though.

TIFU: Was mixing some juice late last night (blackberry crumble), had a brain glitch and swapped the PG & VG bottles. So now have an 20/80 bakery juice (approx 15% aroma) After a small amount of cursing I mixed an equivalent in 80/20 VG/PG. I've only ever vaped high VG juice, so thought I'd turn here for advice. Should I: A) vape it? B) mix the two together for 50/50? or C) something else?

If a) - is there a high PG build that will take the edge off?

As an aside...the two bottles smelled very different this morning. How much of an affect does PG have on steep time?

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoI improved Grack and all I got was this lousy flair

Well, first off... How sensitive to PG are you?

80% PG would be anywhere from thrying to breathe razorwire (for a fairly PG intolerant individual) to no big deal (to someone with minimal sensitivity and masochistic tendencies).

1 points

by lissajousover 6 years ago

I have no idea :D - I've only ever vaped relatively high VG. Well....not completely true. I've mixed a CBD juice for my significant other at 50/50 and I'm completely fine with that. I guess a sensible strategy would be to mix up a quick SnV at 80/20 and see how I get on.

2 points

by coop34over 6 years ago

I say try it. Only way to know.

I vape 100% PG when getting a new gallon, just for QC. It's not a big deal, at least to me.

Does the peppery taste from TFA VC dissipate over time with steeping?
