Any advice for a beginner
submitted over 6 years ago by brutus--judus--138

Im tired of the cost of juice. In my state its taxed like crazy a 120 for 35 bucks is to much esp if i don't end up liking it at all. I have the whole vg pg thing i understand alot of it but the flavors i have got in the past blow ass.

Good job with the links, Pass. I'll add that you definitely shouldnt be ordering flavors when you start out just because they sound good to you. Lots of resources here in this sub.

Find some simple 2 or 3 ingredient recipes that sound nice to you and buy the flavors you need to make them. Alltheflavors.com is a good resource for finding recipes.

Just to add to /u/deflation_ 's suggestion. Here are some simple recipes that are highly rated on ELR. Alltheflavors and ELR are the two main sites for recipes. Each site has its pros and cons. Also in the sidebar there is a section for 'first order flavors' that will allow you to make some really nice juices.

Research flavors before buying. Don't just trust they'll taste like the name implies.

Thanks that is very helpful theres so many choices it was a little overwhelming.

> theres so many choices it was a little overwhelming

(not trying to blow my own horn - grin)
Choose a flavor profile you like and then try this -> Flavor Facts Spreadsheet
Then you can see a lot of info on a smaller group of flavors and do a little compare/contrast of what's available.

> not trying to blow my own

Wouldn't that take a lot of flexibility, if you were to try,?

also, don't trust everyones reviews... One person may have a totally different experience on a flavor, or their device delivers the flavor in a completely different way than yours would. Use reviews with a grain of salt, but do your own experiments to come up with actual conclusions. If I listened to every review out there, I wouldn't have found half of my favorite flavors.

by juthincover 6 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Also watch the percentages mixed at, and the age of the review. Sometimes a review only tells part of the story. For example... LA Cherry (don't buy it, even after i say this) is brutally bad - as the review indicates - at yhe levels tested. At .25% however, it's just a subpar flavor. It tastes almost totally of cherry, with no offtaste, but it is so weak that it'll judt add a hint of cherry to your juice. Still, with the right backup, if you mistakenly bought a bottle, you can use it...

very good advice!

Don't buy more than 10ml of a flavor your first time ordering that flavor. I've wasted a lot of money on flavors I've never ended up using.

For instance, my first order was exclusively 120mls. I was just taken by the limitless amount of juice I would be able to make. What they don't tell you is that no one wants a limitless supply of 2-3 recipes. You'll start branching out and wanting to try different things. Credit where it's due, a few of those 120mls are about half gone after a year of DIY. But most of them are nearly untouched.

this is one of the best comments in here, I too have been bitten by the bug of buying way too much of a flavor, then getting tired of it or move onto something else. Now I always buy 10ml of a new flavor, and IF I find myself really liking it, then I'll buy a 30. If I run through that quickly, I'll buy a 120.

Ouch are you ok haha.

by taktyxover 6 years ago

See if you can find some clones of juices you know you like. Take those flavors and try out some others incorporating those. You will still mix up some things you hate if you do that.. Even recipes that everyone else seems to like. Or just stick with the clones you like. Sticking with the clones will save you money. Otherwise you're down the rabbit hole of flavors, like many of us.

Start small

Make 2-3 concentrate flavors

Don't stick to one source, go to all putlets, ELR..atf, reddit, diyordie.. etc

Learn to walk before you learn to run.

welcome to mixing!

I feel you on wanting to go straight for clones of juices you know you like, but I think you’ll come to find it’s actually sort of difficult to measure out every amount of juice to the proper mL and get the exact flavor you want, so start simple and also take it very easy on menthol if you decide to add any of that or you might end up with a bottle that tastes like Vicks Vapor Rub😅

by lissajousover 6 years ago

And the problem with that is...? ;)

Buy a digital scale that measures as low as .01g.

Find highly rated recipes (maybe 2, to start) and buy the flavors to make those.

When you find recipes online, assume they are total garbage, unless highly ranked/rated. After having experience with flavors and mixing, you will be able to tell when a recipe is trash, just from knowledge of the flavor(s) used and percentages used. But in the beginning, be very skeptical.

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Actually, don't believe ratings entirely. Recipes from the days of eGo pens that got popular then use way too much flavoring. Only trust recipes from the last two or three years. (Unless youre mixing for a pod system, in which case the old recipes are maybe useful.)

Excellent caveat.

by inconceivable_orchidover 6 years ago

I'd recommend mixing by weight. When I first started out, I was using blunt-tip syringes and that ended up being far more of a hassle than being able to drip from the bottles until I had the appropriate weight of each ingredient.

Also, look into the nicotine salts. They have far less of that "peppery" taste which impacts your flavor profile.

1 points

by juthincover 6 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Unless you make the mistake of buying 'hit' salts.

Find a couple recipes that you really like or that are rated to be very good recipes. then by the flavors to make those recipes. I did that with grack juice. I made it about 20 bottles of it and still was wanting more.

Dude I just started making my own juice two weeks ago and it's so great. I can now make 120 ml for $2-4. I get all my concentrates at liquid barn.

I thought I was looking at the Path of Exile (some lame game) page and not my home page. It took me like five seconds to realize why the post wasn't making any damned sense.
