Move Oolong, Nothing to Tea here, just another Flavor of the Week
submitted over 6 years ago by ID10-TThe Kingmaker

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is...TEA!!!

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested! If you're not interested in the upcoming FOTWs, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that). Please request something more suitable for April than Eggnog, if you do, your request can cut in line.

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are basically video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Next week's flavor will be: Yogurt

The week after that will be: Chocolate Cookies (Chocolate Chip, Oreo, Thin Mint)

The week after that will be: Oatmeal/Granola

The week after that will be: Coffee

The week after that will be: Pomegranate

The week after that will be: American Brand Tobaccos

The week after that will be: European Brand Tobaccos

The week after that will be: Asian Brand Tobaccos

The week after that will be: Eggnog <--- date on this one might get moved down

The week after that will be: Hard Candy

The week after that will be: Donuts

The week after that will be: Boysenberry

The week after that will be: Popcorn

The week after that will be: Pistachio

The week after that will be: Nut Mixes and Mixed Nuts (Macadamia, Walnut, Cashew)

The week after that will be: Anise and Black Licorice <--- I hate you OdieDoodah

The week after that will be: Exotic Spices and Spice Blends

I've been working on a Taro milk tea that uses FE Green that I will post this week. I would be interested if someone has anything similar to compare to.

Is there a taro concentrate out there that doesn’t smell like regurgitated raw potatoes? I’d be all over a good taro milk tea recipe.

What concentrates have you tried? I've only had tfa and Fe. Currently using Fe.

That is kind of you! Go for it, anyone considering--I bought Black and Red (and Cream, and Avocado, and and and) from NicRiv last month and I think I should have just gotten all the FLV teas, along with that Soy. I wasn't sure how they would be because all of my Flavorah (save 2) so far has been fruits. Good stuff, really good.

Will add a bunch of tea thoughts to this thread later in the week; I've been testing a good little bunch over the last couple of months and need to check out where they're all at now.

Sounds like a good deal. At least for those in murica. Not worth getting assraped by couriers for crossing a border tho ..

/u/Sc0lm00 you wanted to see the blueberry tea recipe, yeah? Well here it is

A creamy rich tea with a soft bit of blueberry. Not a terribly sweet blueberry, more of a dried fruit steeped with tea flavor. Initially the recipe called for twice the sweet cream, but that's teetering on the edge of getting the cheesy off notes from it, so double at your own risk.

#blueberry tea MFG | Flavor | % -------|--------|---------- FA | Black Tea | 3.0%
TFA | Bavarian cream | 2.7%
TFA | sweet cream | 1.35%
TFA | blueberry extra | 2.7%
TFA | blueberry wild | 2.7%

The only tea concentrate I've tried so far is FLV green tea which is awesome!

The first mix I whipped up with it was :

FLV Green Tea @ 1.25% JF Honey Peach @ 1.5% FA Apricot @ 0.5% TPA Honeysuckle @ 1.5% (Sweeten if you wish) .

It turned out pretty damn tasty and I'm excited to try more teas!

I'll have to get Pomegranate but this looks good! Any other fruits you think would go well in its place in the mean time?

2 points

Sure, I think if you wanted to play around you could try lots of top heavy bright fruits, maybe something like passion fruit or a bright Pineapple.

I had a couple friends who wanted me to come up with a Peach Sweet Tea recipe, it's nothing crazy but this is what I ended up with:

Peach Tea? EZ
Steep Time: 24-hours
Mixed at: 70vg\30pg

MFG|Flavor|% :-:|:-:|:-: CAP|Juicy Peach|3% FLV|Lemon Tea|0.5% FLV|Peach|1% CAP|Super Sweet|0.25% TPA|Sweet Tea|8%

This is pretty good after about 24 hours, but if you give it about 3-5 days everything settles in nicely. I don't really have the best notes as this is something I kind of threw together with only 4 iterations or so. My friends yelled at me to stop messing with it because they thought it was great so I left it alone.

DAT Tea: TPA Sweet Tea/FLV Lemon Tea actually make for a surprisingly decent combo. TPA Sweet Tea tastes like a decent generic store-bought sweet tea that you would get, and FLV provides a little bit more of that authentic earthiness with the hint of lemon helping support the peach as well. It's more in the background but you notice it on the exhale.

Peachy Keen: This is my go to Peach combo and if you're looking to try putting Peach in something I would give this a try.

CAP Super Sweet is mostly in this because the people I made this for are used to store bought juice, it does help bring the Peach out a little bit more in my opinion, but if you want to take it out the recipe stands well on it's own.

From what I gather:

FE Green Tea

TFA Sweet Tea

FLV Lemon Tea

Are all considered good. I recall there being a decent black tea as well, but it seems many of the black and green teas are pretty dirt-y or aloe-y.

FLV Eisai Tea is a pretty awesome green tea, too. It doesn't go way floral like FE, doesn't taste minty like FLV Green Tea, doesn't taste grassy like TFA, and doesn't taste assy like FA.

2 points

by Justjasontmover 6 years ago

I need to get that one. I've been liking the flv green tea in my limited use of it so far and I've heard really good things about the eisai lately

New to the DIY scene but I have a recipe(most likely needs adjustments).... Raspberry Sweet Tea—Raspberry (FA) - 2% Sweet Raspberry (TFA) - 4% Sweet Strawberry (CAP) - 2% Sweet Tea (TFA) - 5% sweetener (TFA) - .5%

2 points

by mlNikonover 6 years ago

You might want to bump up the sweet tea, it's delicious but very week. Try 8-12%

1 points

by Ceferinoooover 6 years ago

Thank you for this Do you think I should use super sweet or just stick with sweetener from tpa

1 points

by mlNikonover 6 years ago

The thing with tfa Sweetener is that it waters down your mix and sweet tea is already kind of thin and watery so you might want to use super sweet or Fw Sweetener which is just sucralose.

A ketchup iced tea. Intriguing idea.

Novice diy-er here.

From my first couple mixes this is what I found for these flavours:

TFA Green Tea: has a noticeable earthy feel and taste to it, can be too dominant in a mix if you use even a little to much. Overall I like it but just need more experience to figure out pairings.

TFA Sweet Tea: this is exactly what I expected it to be, it's sweet and has a tea-like aftertaste. On its own it can be a little dry. Seems to pair really well with exotic fruits. TFA Papaya and INW Cactus to give an example. u/ID10-T made a very good recipe with it.

Finished this just in time for the last day of the Tea FOTW:

#GTKK 2019

Co.| Flavor | % ---|---|---- FW | White Chocolate| 3 FLV | White Chocolate | 2 CAP | Vanilla Whipped Cream | 2 FLV | Eisai Tea | 1 WF | Crispy Wafer | 1 FW | Sweetener | 1

10% total flavor, steep for a week.

Unless you’re a pepper taster who can’t vape TFA White Chocolate, there was nothing wrong with /u/ExclusiveGirl’s Green Tea Kit Kat recipe from October 2016. It was a great idea, well-crafted from the best ingredients at the time. But at the time was more than two years ago. We’ve got better tools for this job now. FE Green Tea is better than TFA (grass) or FA (ass) but it’s still too floral, thankfully we now have FLV Eisai Tea, which tastes much closer to the matcha flavoring in those Green Tea Kit Kats. WF Crispy Wafer also better job than CAP Sugar Cookie in getting that crispy inside. I’ve replaced TFA White Chocolate with a combination of FLV and FW White Chocolates – no more black pepper and a great combination of top and mid-range notes that I'm again stealing from Jbird– and added some sweetness. Earlier versions were missing some creaminess, so I carried over one ingredient from the original recipe, CAP Vanilla Whipped Cream, which fills a small gap in the white chocolate duo.
