I'm an avid diy juicer and have been for a while now. I'm happy with my recipes and everything is great ...... apart from one thing.
My wife smokes, she's tried giving up via vaping before but couldn't get on with it. She's now trying again, but it is hurting her throat. She's tried mtl and dtl vaping, I've made up 100%VG juice to eliminate a PG intolerance, different setups / flavours etc and everything apparently hurts her throat! Should she just throw in the towel and go cold turkey? Or is there another option in my juices I've overlooked?
How long did her vaping tries last?
When I first switched to vaping, the hits were really harsh for a few days or a week, but the feeling went away. Even all these years later, the first few hits in the morning are harsh.
Maybe see if she'll tough it out for a while and see what happens?
Maybe mixing with Nic Salts would help smooth it out for her? I know I had to be at a higher nic % when I quit and salts would help keep it from getting harsh at the higher %s.
Buy her a juul
My buddy switched to my max VG juice because Juuls were hurting his throat. So that may not help, or it may only help until her lungs adjust.
Also, I remember coughing a lot when I vaped before I stopped smoking entirely. Now I almost never cough, I just needed to commit, and slowly reduce the nic.
I find that hydration is a big factor. Vaping dries out your throat. Drinking lots of water makes my throat much less irritated. I still get a little, though. Less than when I was smoking. I wouldn't be shocked if temperature is a factor, as well.
Water, but drinking different things helps too. Milk, for me helps a lot. I don't usually drink milk, but for a bunch of reasons I've been drinking it; and the milk coats your entire mouth and throat and makes vaping harsh juices really easy
So water for sure, but milk works really well too
I have a mate who smokes heavily - both cigarettes and marijuana. Constantly chimney-ing away. As soon as he takes even the slightest draw on a vape he is overcome with coughing fits. Is it a medical/biological issue, is it psychosomatic, is it due to pre-existing airway damage due to smoking? Not sure.
I do know that quite a few people experience discomfort in the early days of vaping, and that discomfort goes away after about 1-2 weeks of vaping. I guess she has to weigh her options. Mild discomfort for a short period of time while vaping - or terminal illness/lung cancer/heart disease etc from cigarette smoking.
I have 3 friends that are the same, one is really trying now though @least. One even tries it every time she comes by. Likes the flavor, has tried both mtl & dl. But even a short puff she starts hacking away afterwards. Someone explained it as "your lungs are angry at you when you dual use". So add weed to that equation...
I find that since I've switched I notice the harshness of weed smoke to be almost intolerable, almost 😉 But dabs that used to kill my lungs barely phase me anymore 🤷♂️

My neighbor is the exact same way (Cigs & pot). He asks how I could vape. I just say "You're not used to it". He takes one little puff and it's an immediate coughing fit that lasts several seconds.
Make a cigarette juice to replicate the flavor, i'd be happy to help find a recipe, just give us her brand. My wife went through this and it was just a mental thing, replicating the flavors..

Of course it hurts her throat, smoking cigs i bet hurt her throat when she started too.
My gf is pretty much same as op if you know of a good canadian cigarette recipe, I would definitely be interested in that. Belmont/pall mall blue special is her brand
Heres my go-to cig recipe, that's non N.E.T. A solid N.E.T will taste phfft, just like licking a god-dang cigarette, but for commercial taste, or you don't have access to an n.e.t
Black Honey (TPA) 5%
Clove (FA) 1%
RY4 Double (TPA) 2%
Tobbacco, DNB (Dirty Neutral Base) (INW) 1%
Tuscan Reserve (Ultimate) (FA) 2%
For Menthol- Extreme Ice (FW) 2%

What type of device is she using to vape with? Because the device itself plays a huge role in harshness of the hit as well.
She started off with a single 18650 mod, with an aspire nautilus x mini mtl tank, now trying out my old smoant charon mod with a vandy vape kylin rta
Maybe go lower in nicotine and try a direct lunch setup. Most mouth to lung devices hurt my throat at first too
Edit: lung
Some people have a much smoother experience with Nic Salts, it might be worth getting a little bit to experiment with. Outside of that, trying a different supplier for your nicotine might help.

My local vape shop had an amazing palette for flavors, but their nic was super harsh; it ended up being one of the first pushes towards DIY for me. I took some of their stuff at 0mg, picked up some nicotine online, and mixed it to my usual strength, and it was night/day in regards to the throat hit. She might be experiencing something similar.
For my wife, she has a better time at a lower wattage on a mesh sub-ohm tank. It might not deliver the same level of flavor as a rebuildable (and the coils are a bit more expensive than wire/cotton), but it might provide a different ( hopefully better) experience for your wife.

Best of luck, man =)
I also had a terrible throat irritation after a couple of days of switching from cigarettes to vaping (around 4-6ml daily of 12mg nic juice).
I kept a bottle of water at hand all the time in order to keep my mouth and throat wet and I also changed some liquids that I felt that were very harsh. Not sure if any of these actually helped (the water probably did) but after a couple of days it stopped being an issue.
Try her on like everyone else said, a Juul or even a stick pen like a eGo. After that she will become used to it and will be able to go into a better mod. I started on an eGo pen and within a month moved into a mod then started to sub ohming. Nothing is wrong with those if they work for her to stop the analog ones. I'm sure I'm not the only here that started on a simply eGo.
Go with bought juice that she would like and push a higher mg in nic. I went from an 18mg down. It's easy to do on a stick and not sub ohming. :-)
If you want a woman to get into vaping, buy her a super small pod device and 50mg salt juice. I'd recommend getting her the Juul and one of the aftermarket power bank cases. The cases look like a pack of slim cigarettes, and keep the Juul charged and stores one or two spare pods. One pod is roughly one pack of smokes. I recommend the Juul because it's small as hell, smaller than it looks in pictures for sure, and it's honestly the best smooth salt experience imo. You can refill pods 10times easily so long as you never vape it till it's empty and dry where you can get burnt hits. You can even go so far as to disassemble and swap the cotton and get more life out of it but around ten refills it doesn't fit in the Juul as well anymore and starts falling out but mostly leaking becomes a real problem around 15 refills. It never leaks in my pocket but it collects up around the power prongs. The lids are machine pressed and not meant to withstand being removed and pressed back togeather 15 times but it's suitable up to around 10 refills.
Much can be technique, airflow, temp and irritating flavors. Sometimes it's a weird reflex reaction to feeling something wet in the lungs, but definitely not the throat lol.
I had success with Freemax Starre Pure tank for fellow smokers. Normally I RTA, but this thing is pretty damn fine
Ok, so even with 0nic and pretty much 0pg she's getting a sore throat? Any chance she's sensitive to kanthal? Some people are. Try a stainless coil if you haven't already. This would also allow using temp control so the vape doesn't get too hot if she likes long drags. It seems everything else has been eliminated, as long as you've tried getting her to vape straight VG (so eliminating nic, PG, and possibly harsh flavors , all in one go, just in case her problem was all of the above...)
Just curious, but it hasn't been mentioned what nic and what % was used? I find with 100/100 PG nic, even at 6mg strength, it used to leave a scratchy effect. And the rest is what the others have said. Lower nic % or switch to nic salt, leaving it out of the sun and drink lots of water. Try different setups, coils, cottons, wattages. All those could contribute to unpleasant vapes.
I think it maybe the nicotine level if it's sore on throat, if she coughs her lungs aren't use to cold vapor and expect warm smoke but you didn't mention that. Nicotine is harsh very harsh make her a bottle of 70/30 vgpg and 3mg Nico if that works for her then next bottle up the nicotine to 6mg so she gets a proper hit. Good luck keep trying for her!
It's not the best way to do it and a lot of people think it's a nasty habit, but dipping maybe with pouches and vaping once or twice a day helps ridiculously. The constant nicotine from the leafs means you aren't trying to always play with your fingers while the vape still gives you something to do with your hands occasionally without chain vaping for an hour. I did that and haven't touched a cigarette in 4 months, where when it was just vaping I'd break after a week. I'm moving now from dip and vaping to just vaping, but its helped so much for me.
