Help me fix a recipe
submitted over 6 years ago by [deleted]

Back when I started vaping I got tons of juices, flavours and everything else that I need to get started with vaping (including building and mixing) from a good friend who was vaping for a long time already. My ADV was a mix that he got from an expo many years ago. Back then they gave out small DIY bags filled with different flavours (from different brands) and a card containing the recipe. I loved this juice. It was amazing. After all the juice was gone I asked him for the recipe and he gave it to me. Sadly back then I didnt know that different flavours from different brands would produce different juices. He didnt know that either and just told me the flavours that are needed without the brands behind them. Sadly I‘m not in contact with him anymore but I would love to get the juice back. My flavour collection is limited and I dont even know the direction that I would have to move into. This subreddit seems to be the best place to get some ideas on what to try without wasting huge amounts of money on different flavours. The only problem is that the main flavour (Waldmeister) seems to be a "german" flavour. Besides from some tiny german brands I cant find it anywhere. Maybe I‘m still lucky and someone here has the flavour.

Recipe:

  • 2.0% Waldmeister
  • 1.0% Apple
  • 1.0% Menthol
  • 0.3% Vanilla

Flavours:

Waldmeister is a really nice floral flavour. It‘s dominant and on the first few puffs probably not everyones favourite but give it a try if you dont know it. I tried 3 different Waldmeister flavours and all of them were tasting exactly the same to me so I dont think it really makes a different which one to use for this recipe. For that reason I‘m currently using the flavour from Riccardo. I‘m happy with this one as a standalone and I feel like it could be the correct one.

Apple wasnt really dominant. It made everything a bit more round and sweet. It kind of reminded me of a fresh apple juice, nothing candy like.

Menthol on the original recipe was marked with 0-1% so its not really necessary but I always enjoyed menthol and went the 1% route. I never really tried any different menthol flavours so I dont know if they produce a different final result. All I know is that the original was a 10% menthol. Maybe someone here can tell me if I have to experiment with different menthols too?

Vanilla flavour was really tiny in the background. It was a sweet vanilla but again nothing that would remind me of all the bakery stuff out there. I guess its more to round everything a bit and give it a final top. It was just a natural vanilla flavour, nothing that would remind me of a bakery or stuff like that.

Steeping:

The steeping time was pretty short. Right after mixing, it kind of had a parfume like taste which seems to come from the Waldmeister. After 24hrs the parfume taste is gone and after that I never noticed any differences. I had juice that was months old and I had juice that was only 1-2 days old and all of them were the same.

Current Try:

After reading a lot through the flavour of the week posts and other posts, I decided that "CAP Green Apple" seemed to be a good idea. Sadly it just doesnt play that nice with the Waldmeister flavour or atleast not on that percentage. Besides that I couldnt find a good apple flavour that would match the general thought. For vanilla I tried "TFA Vanillin 10%". I kind of like it but its not giving that sweet vanilla background note or again, atleast not at the current percentage.

Final Words:

It seems like a lot of people here have hundreds/thousands of different flavours and tons of experiences with them and how they pair with other flavours. Maybe someone here can help me to find the correct ingredients (or something close) or maybe even ways to make it better by adding other flavours that would play nice with the current combination. I guess that not many people here have the Waldmeister flavour but maybe I'm wrong or maybe someone enjoys playing around with floral flavours and would like to give it a try.

TL;DR:

Lost the original recipe/flavours and want to find them or something close.

Need a good apple and a good vanilla flavour that play well with the floral Waldmeister flavour.

Also need informations about menthol flavours to know if i need to play around with them too.

//edit: Thanks to u/Prometheus_unwound for poiting out the english name of that flavour. Seems to be "Sweet Woodruff".

//edit²: After searching a bit around the sweet woodruff flavours and the recipes with it, I saw that many people are using it together with bourbon vanilla. FA Vanilla Bourbon comes really close to what I'm searching for.

Personally, I’d try FA Fuji @~2% for the apple, and TPA Vanilla Swirl @~1% for the vanilla. I’ve never had a woodruff concentrate, so can’t help with that. Good luck.

You already helped a lot by calling it woodruff. Seems like TFA has that so i guess I should give that a try before I stay with (Riccardo Waldmeister) the current one just to be sure. It also opens up for other people here because i doubt that anyone here has the Riccardo flavour but maybe someone here has TFA Woodruff (hoping its close or the same as the other "Waldmeister" flavours but so far all flavours were the same on that one).

TFA was definitely 'the' flavor company to use until about three years ago. It's totally possible tfa made all of the flavors your looking for considering the fact that they actually gave the waldmeister flavor you were looking for. I just assumed it was German only.

I assumed the same. I was searching for english names to that flavour over and over but all I was searching for never really helped. Searching for woodruff shows that the flavour seems to be more commen than I thought. TFA, INW, FA, JF and many other seem to have that flavour. By searching for woodruff on ELR I found a lot of different recipes. Sadly not the recipe I was searching for but I didnt really expect that. It still showed me that many people seem to use it together with bourbon vanilla and I gave it a try with "FA Vanilla Bourbon". It seems to be really close so and I think it could be the correct vanilla if the apple would be correct. I'll keep it for now and keep searching for other apples.

Can you do more than just describe Waldmeister as floral?

I dont really know how to describe the taste and smell of it. Maybe the wikipedia site can help a bit but i dont think so.

" As the epithet odoratum suggests, the plant is strongly scented, the sweet scent being derived from coumarin "

For the apple, FA Stark (apple) or CAP Double Apple. Stark is mild and juicy, Double is also juicy and has a good body to it. They'll take on florals nicely. In this particular mix, the stark might fit better. A combination of both is also nice.

Other apples such as FA Fuji, Green Apple, RF Apple, and many others are a bit too bright, with too many top notes, and not enough body to work with florals well. Some of them will also be too tart/acidic.

However, both Stark and Double Apple might not be strong enough to be used at only 1%. Then again, the way you describe it, 1% of Double could be what it was. The other suggestion would be INW Two Apples, although that might not fit as well.

For the vanilla, INW Shisha Vanilla is my go-to for a light but potent vanilla without the custard/dairy parts you'd get from using an icecream type. At 0.3% it'd fit as a light background note.

For menthol, the different brands are essentially the same thing when they're only called "menthol" with different concentrations. It's just menthol dissolved in PG. If one brand said 10% solution and another says 5% solution, you would just double the amount you use to compensate.

Things like FA Polar Blast, Koolada, and WS-23 are cooling agents, not actual menthol, so those are for making the mix cold without the menthol taste. Combining them with real menthol works pretty nice too sometimes.

Okay so that means for the menthol i can just stay with whatever i have as long as i keep an eye on the concentrations. I know that the original had 1% Menthol with a 10% concentration. I also know that it had no WS-23 or any other cooling. I tried a few different double apple flavours in the past but to me double apple always has a bit of anise flavour in the background and i hate that taste. Is that different on CAP or INW? Or is it possible that the other flavours would hide anise behind them?

Ok forget the INW two apples. I also detect that anise note you're referring to, although I kinda like it in some mixes, and it's in there. It's definitely there strong in their shisha apple so avoid that one. The double apple mixes you've tried very likely contained some of those.

FA Stark doesn't really have the anise but is more similar to the apples that do compared to the Capella.

CAP Double Apple is gonna be the best fit here I think. It definitely doesn't have any anise note whatsoever and fits with the description you've given.

I don’t have a Waldmeister flavor and I have no idea about its flavor profile/taste.

I remember reading reviews about Waldmeister flavor by CBV and by German Flavors in relation to Tom Klark’s eliquids and a clone recipe, http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/1332173/Tom%20Klarks%20Sawyer%20Classic%20-%20Sc%5BA%5DrY

How about a Woodruff flavour? That seems to be the english name of that flavour and according to ELR many companies have that flavour.

I’ve found a short comment about it, https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/threads/tfa-sweet-woodruff.648155/#post-15171518

Do not use TPA Sweet Woodruff. It's offensive as hell. JF Sweet Woodruff is better by miles

I would consider that all of the flavorings are likely from the same company, especially if it's from the early days of ejuice. Since it's a German flavor as you said, I would consider looking into German flavor companies. Inawera is the big German company. I know they make a vanilla, their buiscutto is absolutely amazing and their strawberry is equally delicious. If you find one flavor that's spot on, I would use that flavor company for the rest. I can say though that Fuji apple fa is my go to apple. Oh, and order cactus by inawera, it's an absolute must for fruit flavors that makes any fruit more juicy at just half a percent.

Which is properly part of Germany. Just ask a German...
