Triggering my asthma
submitted almost 7 years ago by Moongose83

Hey!

I've made a sample (30ml) of this juice with

7% FW Lemonade

0.5% INW Lime

0.75% FA Lemon Sicily

75% VG, 2.6mg.

I let it steep for a few days then I've tried it a few times and it always gives me asthma reaction. I should've probably used less of the Lemonade, like 5%, because it is pretty strong atm, but it wouldn't probably solve this anyway.

Is there a known substance in these 3 flavours that could cause this? Or should I try to pinpoint by making juice for each of those flavours and then look into the ingredients? I like this Lemonade flavor, but I don't want to use (Vlad the) inhaler after every hit. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Lemonade is a tough one. I generally don't go over 5% around 2.5 3 works best for me. If you try to save that 30ml freeze the lemon but add everything else to reach a 60~ ml.

Thanks I'll try that. Although I'm not sure if it'll help to prevent the reaction I get? Maybe it'll be less acute but it'll still be there? Idk.

It's the FW Lemonade. All flavors with citric acid can be rough, but FW Lem especially. The concentrate evaporates right out of the bottle, so you need to be careful about it getting too strong (if you have an issue).

Quick question: does balsamic vinegar burn your tongue? Or blueberries or normal citrus?

I can get those hurtful spots on tongue (aphthae?) from sour things, but when I eat tomato it's 100%. Otherwise I'm fine with most things iirc.

I don't think you have a citric acid allergy then (my sister does). For your juice, bump up the Sicilian Lemon, lower the FW to 1.5% and throw in some sweetenner.

Thanks. Will try that.

I know this is the diy sub, but I wanna toss this out there too. Naked 100 triggers my asthma, and I've been trying to pinpoint what causes it. I really like their juice too

Where else should someone know this, if not here? Many people here know what some flavours contains etc. Sorry if it seems silly or it is wrong sub.

Maybe someone here came across similar problem.

I won't be vaping that juice anymore, nor I'll make anything with these 3 flavors. But it'd be nice to know what could cause the reaction.

I'm not sure honestly. You could have an allergy to PG. That's kind of why I posted here as well, I'm hoping maybe someone knows.

I say this as I got a mouthful of 35 nic juice 😂

I vape for more than half a year (various combinations VG/PG) and this was my first strong reaction. My asthma is almost exclusively from physical exercise, idk how is it called in English. I've never experienced reaction to vaping or anything else than intensive sports really. What I'm trying to say is, that I'm pretty sure the issue is one of those 3 flavours.

Lemonade can be really harsh on the throat. try lowering it to maybe 4%?

Yea, /u/CessationKing already mentioned it. I'll try that. Thanks.

If that doesn't work you can also look into something like MTS Vape Wizard or TFA Smooth as well. They're additives for toning down harsh flavors.

Thanks! Didn't know these exists. I'll keep them in mind although I'll probably try just to lower the % and if that doesn't work I'll just avoid citrus flavours. Better to be on the safe side.

I would suggest to make 3 small batches of juice, each missing one of the 3 flavorings and see if you can pin point which one is causing it...

Can’t you live without lemons and lemonade to be safe? Move on to different fruits or bakeries, tobaccos?

Yes I can. That's why I'm trying to pinpoint what's the issue. To avoid it. :-) or are you saying that all lemon flavours are known for this?

A lot of them are on the harsh side of the throat hit spectrum at least.

I see. Just when I have orange flavour coming this week in vape mail. Well, time to try nuts and more tobacco I guess. I'm getting tired of vaping sweet stuff all the time.

Yeeeaaahh... The acidity of those flavorings is probably the issue. I don't tolerate heavy flavor bases like cheesecake or yogurts either. Some flavors irritate, some feel like they leave a residue. Acids may also cause mucus in the lungs/bronchea.

No garauntee, but you might be able to tolerate citrus in low quantities with a balancing/neutral flavor, like custard or tobacco, or I actually tolerate my own Fruit Loops flavor fine which uses TPA Fruit Circles. Its like a "lerange" base w/ACP.

(70%VG/30%PG base)
3% TPA Fruit Circles 1.5% each: FA Cream Fresh, TPA Sweet cream.

Couple drops of ACP if you like it extra crunchy.

Or you could just lower your ratios. The citrus flavors tend to be really strong. Maybe not FW, but FA flavors are strong like buffalo and occasionally TPA's, too...Mix half unflavored base with what you got and let it "cure" for a couple days and then try it. If that works you can figure it out from there.

Thanks for all the info. I'll try that recipe for sure. Maybe I'll try to add those creams to Lemonade to see what happens too.

Most fruit concentrates trigger my asthma, but sometimes its coil related too. The smok v8 coils used to trigger me fairly often. Sometimes brand new and sometimes they just seem to attract dirt. Pollen and dust allergies, anaphylactic.

I once had a rash when I was using Kathal wire. I'm not sure if it was related (could be anything really), but I use ss since then just to be on the safe side. So yea coils can have weird effects too I guess.

Pollen (mostly dry grasses), cats and dust here. Although I only get worse breathing, start to cry and have running nose. Nothing life threatening.

By most fruits, you mean even like let's say watermelon?

Does nickel wire give you trouble? A friend vaped n80 coils for years then developed a nickel allergy and he can't use any nickel coil wire of any kind now. Totally not asthma related but could be a factor for some folks.

I've never used nickel, so not sure. I build with kanthal and use SS prebuilts.

Have you tried a Profile RDA with Mesh? I have been using one since trying it at a show, and it is so smooth and easy to use. I have not changed the mesh in 3 months. Great flavor production too.

No but I do want one. Restriction does sometimes trigger my asthma and they sound nice and airy.

You could try a lemon merengue recipe. Much safer and very bitey.

Try this.

I just eyeball it. I started with 80% vg, add 3% nic, 5% flavours and top off with pg. Then adjust flavor and nic after steeping. For lemon meringue I started with equal parts Capella; New york cheescake, Lemon and Lemon meringue pie v2. I ended up freshening it up with another 2.5% lemon after a month of steeping.

I have the same issue. Strong citrus flavors and strong bananas tend to set off my asthma. I just avoid 'em, personally.

Lime always triggers an attack for me. I have only mixed Lemon Sicily for my lemon flavors, but that's never given me a problem. I can't speak to the FW Lemonade though which is where it might also be coming from.

Edit: I've mixed only lime into a batch without any lemon at 0.5% and less and it still triggered asthma attacks. It really doesn't agree with me which is why it would be my prime suspect.

Thanks. I'll try to lower the % on the Lemonade and avoid lime next iteration and see how it works for me.
