Weekly Questions Thread - Week of December 24, 2018
submitted almost 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page. If you’re a New Mixer check out the DIY Beginners Guide and the links below then feel free to ask about anything you’re still not clear on.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights from last week:

  • /u/Discchord posted his annual PSA reminding everyone to buy nicotine while it’s cold outside. I was also reminded that I have him RES tagged as “Statutory Vape” which was quite confusing but luckily RES saved the link for the post that earned him the tag; a mildly infamous, 3 year old recipe post: Jailbait

  • Speaking of mildly infamous /u/matthewkocanda brought his hyperbolic hammer down on the ~~ten~~ two posts rounding up recipes to consider for Recipe of the Year. And with his altruistic title “What is YOUR favorite recipe you made in 2018?” you’d almost think it wasn’t just a sneaky way to get someone to nominate IPA Smoke.

  • /u/OdieDoodah (The Real MVP) took the time to make a prettier, easier to navigate Version 2.0 of my Front Page Recipes doc.

  • When he’s not busy putting women’s clothes on and hanging around bars /u/LecherousLumberjack is being an upstanding citizen of the world and trying to help out the international mixers by adding more non-US/CAN/UK/AUS vendors to the list. Just realized I need to add those. If you’ve got some more, add them and tag me.

  • /u/Harry_Nice back at it again with another Nice recipe. He’s shared 7 recipes in the last few months and all but 1 have Nice in the name. I’m not sure how to feel about that but they all look nice ¯\(ツ)

  • /u/flavchallenged took us back in time to 2014 with a clone ~~request~~ discussion about Castle Long.

  • /u/Bleu_Menace shared a holiday recipe “We Noggin’ Over Here” and even added some development notes at my request. Apparently requesting development notes is considered controversial to those who don’t realize that is literally my job ;)

  • And finally Happy Christmas, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, Diwali, or other holiday you’re currently celebrating.

Highlights!

Q: flavors that leave no or the least scent/room note?

Gonna be around people who don’t vape and I’m thinking I might go with something reduced flavor. I can’t stand flavorless. I’ve tried it and I can’t hang. So far I’ve tried just ws-23/polar blast with higher nic and higher pg for some throat hit but damned if I don’t miss a little flavor. Ideas?

Edit: happy holidays to you too, apex.

Maybe try out /u/kirkt's #1 recipe from July ;)

by isuamadogalmost 7 years ago

Man, I did try it. I thought I’d reset my taste buds and be all cool guy. That slightly sweet/not sweet enough flavor just ewwed me out.

by Apexifiedalmost 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Always tell myself I'll do it for a week. Two days later I give up. Cap Cool Mint is a nice way to ease back in after unflavored, though. Should make for a pleasant room note, too.

1 points

by horrendalmost 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Some mint or menthol maybe? Should give your palate something and not give out much smell I think

2 points

by isuamadogalmost 7 years ago

I was thinking mint/menthol would leave a scent but probably a more familiar one. Plus bang for your buck. Coolant alone is a little weird but not bad.

1 points

by horrendalmost 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Yeah I don't think anyone would take offence to a small smell of mint in the air, no different to mint chewing gum breath really

I get away with vanilla custard.

New mixer here, having a bit of a hard time finding relevant info on the sub, could be because I'm not using the correct search terms so I'll ask the question here.
I just got my 500ml VG bottle and it has a 1year expiration date. Right now there's a pretty good deal for 1liter VG @ 5£ so now I'm kind of afraid to buy in 1L quantity :/.

How long can VG be kept for in these 2 situations:

  • Unopened bottle, stored in the freezer, HDPE.
  • Bottle frequently opened, stored at room temp in dark spot, HDPE.
2 points

by Apexifiedalmost 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

You don't need to store it in a freezer. The shelf life is longer than 1 year, typically closer to 2 and even then, it doesn't go rancid, it's hygroscopic and ends up thinning out. It can occasionally pick up some off notes, if stored improperly for a long time but even then it would likely only be noticable if you were vaping unflavored.

1L isn't a lot of VG. Go for it.

About a year ago when you guys were doing the cloning challenges there was a thread about cloning White Gummi by Moku Oyatsu. Since the flavor has basically become the stuff of legend, I'm curious if anyone who participated in that thread made an acceptable clone of if another one was discovered anywhere. I've scoured the internet, I've had my distributors reach out to district 5, I've pulled every string I have in this industry to try and find a box and I'm SOL right now and hoping someone out there made a clone.

3 points

by juthincalmost 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

The clone challenge is still a thing. Once a month. ISFR it was supposed to be some amount of INW Pineapple, I think a CAP Jelly Candy (or something like that) and maybe a bit of citrus, possibly INW Lemon Mix, maybe a grapefruit? The problem with these clone challenges is knowing if you're got it.... Since most of the time the person trying to create the clone has never tried the original, even if it is still on the market. When it isn't, it's even more of a challenge.

Hello everyone! I'm a total noob, only got my first supplies yesterday, so I've still got a lot to learn. I'd like to ask you something, though.

I'm interested in mixing Longing by u/ID10-T, but I don't have FA Fresh Cream. I looked into some possible subs and it seems my best bets would be:

- Droping it completely and using FLV Cream at 2% (which I'm not inclined to do because it's heavier than the FA);

- Droping the FA, increasing the FLV Cream to 1.5% and the INW Shisha Vanilla to 1.2%, as suggested by u/captainmalexus;

- Subbing the FA Fresh Cream for 1.5% or 2% TPA Whipped Cream, since it's a lighter cream than FLV Cream.

What do you guys think? Would there be any other good alternatives? Here's my ATF stash for reference.

3 points

by kindgroundover 6 years ago

The smartest thing here is to bump up the FLV Cream to 1.5. If you're looking for more vanilla with your sub, instead of upping Shisha Vanilla, up the VBIC a little bit. The TFA Whipped Cream sub would probably change the whole thing completely as it's mostly triacetin which smooths and blends other flavors.

2 points

by mixmintressover 6 years ago

Ooh, noting that about the TFA Whipped Cream.

1 points

by grettledudeover 6 years ago

Thanks a lot for the insight, that sounds reasonable. I'm not necessarily looking for more vanilla, just more cream, so I think I'll try both your and ID10-T's suggestions in a small batch, like 10ml, and see how them both turn out.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 6 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Try 1:1 subbing TFA Sweet Cream. But don’t make a large batch of that in case you hate it

2 points

by grettledudeover 6 years ago

thanks, man, will do!

2 points

by mixmintressover 6 years ago

You know, I was sure I had made a substitution and could help you, but in looking back what I had subbed was Cap Vanilla Whipped Cream for Flv Cream (and I don't recommend this because it's really overly sweet, though perhaps messed something up because I'd seen several people do it) (in fact, I'm leery to suggest increasing anything sweet in this recipe because of this).

Your option 3 makes sense to me and I think that's what I'd be tempted to do, but if the other person has actually tried option 2, that might save you some work.

Here's the recipe if anyone else wants to look it over:

Thanks for the comment! I'm less inclined to try the whipped cream after what others said, but I'll remember what you said about the other sub.

About to start making my own juice. I really enjoy tart lemonade flavors, not sweet ones. So any recommend flavors would be helpful. I can find any clone I want on the sidebar I’m assuming but i wanna try an good lemonade flavor first and was looking for some quick suggestions. Thanks !

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

INW Lemon Mix is a great lemon zest flavor. LA Lemonade is more commercial lemonade, but add in the Lemon Mix and it's a bit more homemade style. If I can get a few days time freed up, I should run SFTs on the twenty or so lemons I just got in... Maybe one is close enough to the OG INW Lemon...

2 points

by Morris_Moe_Szyslakover 6 years ago

I headed from a couple people to try the LA lemonade, I’ll ordered that for sure. I remember a pink lemonade by element juice or something like that, it was tart and sweet. That’s what I’m going for.

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Tart and sweet? Hmm.

5% LA Lemonade.
.5% INW Lemon Mix.
1% FW ecaffeine.
.5% WS-23.
.5% FA Polar Blast.
(Add stevia to taste.)

That's a solid sweet and tart sorta homestyle lemonade. It also works as a base, you can add blackberry, black currant, blueberry, Bourbon, boysenberry, cactus, cherry, cranberry, elderberry, elderflower, gin, grape, grapefruit, lime, orange, pear, plum, raspberry, rum, sweet tea, tangerine, or vodka to it and have something decent.

Does Cap Sugar cookie v1 fade with time? Coz i think i got an old batch.

I was trying out vurve's https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/10633#milk_and_sugar_cookies_by_vurve off the shake it was very good. Now after 3 days the i can't find the cookie. Feels like it dropped inside the milk glass and got dissolved? Perhaps upping the % of the sugar cookie help.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 6 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Yes, it does. I've learned to stop buying 4 oz bottles and just stick to 30 mls because the concentrate itself it's not as potent after a fairly short time. If you used an old batch, the reason why you can't find the cookie is that the creams in the recipe came out more with a short steep and covered it up. If you had a fresh bottle, it would have just steeped to a nice balance instead of getting run over by the cream.

2 points

by honeypenover 6 years ago

Thanks i guess i will top it half a % at a time. Thank god i only bought a 10 ml.

I have another question for you guys and gals this week.

I've been lurking this sub for quite a while. I have noticed a lot of users saying that they switch between 3+ juices on a daily basis. Even saw one user that bounces between 5+ juices a day.

Question Is: How the hell is this possible? Do y'all own a plethora of mods and RBAs/RDTAs? Like holy crap.

2 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimover 6 years agoresident tobacco expert

I take two different setups with me to work with different juices. When I get home I have two different setups with MTL tanks that I use in the kitchen. Then I’ve got another setup that really doesn’t get much action also sitting in my kitchen. In my basement I’ve got three more for testing flavors, though I’m pretty lazy so I really just rewick one of them and drip different things until it’s all nasty.

2 points

by JayRukusover 6 years ago

Damn. Do you use any tanks? And if you do would you mind listing them? I still haven't found one I like, its becoming a bit taxing on my wallet to keep buying new tanks all the time. Currently using a Serpent SMM. Haven't actually found anything wrong with it yet other than wicking can be a pain sometimes. I also have a Kylan laying around somewhere I ki da liked, but I couldn't keep it from leaking.

1 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimover 6 years agoresident tobacco expert

Two to work: Both are Wotofo Conqueror Minis. Such an underrated tank. I bought four because I don’t ever want to be without at least one.

Two in kitchen: Siren 2 and Berserker Mini

Other one in kitchen: Kaees Solomon RTA

Basement has a few different RDAs but mainly I just use my Mutation X V2. It was the first RDA I got almost 4 years ago and it’s still the best one I’ve ever owned.

I couldn’t really get in to any of the single coil RTAs that I’ve tried besides MTL. I really like a dual coil RTA with a smaller chamber so my simple ass coils can get nice and warm at 30 watts. I’m a simple man. Not really in to Claptons and stuff. I wish they’d do another Conqueror Mini, but not really change anything because it’s already perfect haha. Maybe 24 mm version wouldn’t be horrible.

1 points

by horrendover 6 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Once my cotton is dry in my RDA I just drip a new mix on. Unless it's a strong flavour like coffee, menthol etc there's little to no crossover.

I tend to drip a different mix every time it goes dry otherwise I get too used to the mix and it goes bland.

1 points

by JayRukusover 6 years ago

Huh. I always though you would need to re wick for new flavors, that everything would just become muddled if you mixed juices on cotton.

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 6 years ago

Why wouldn't you just use the same thing?

1 points

by OdieDoodahover 6 years agoThe Real MVP

RDA's are cheap. I have 5 of them. It only take a few seconds to swap them out - only one mod required. Variety is a good thing.

Are the sidebar guides and stuff still viable and up to date?

3 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimover 6 years agoresident tobacco expert

For some reason they won’t load on my phone, so I can’t see what they are, but there was recently a weekly thing we did called Throwback Thursday that was meant to update all the old and outdated stuff in the sidebar. So it should be up to date.

Edit: checked, and they are up to date.

What's up guys? New to DIY and have a quick question for y'all. Someone just informed me that I should be tasting all my new flavors as i get the in to start building a flavor profile for all the concentrates. This now seems very obvious to me now that i was told to do so, especially after reading all the flavor break downs in this sub.

My question is, what do you guys use to make up your 10ml test batches for flavors? Do you have a handful of 10ml glass bottles that you use/reuse to test flavors? Or do you just one off some LDPE 10ml bottles and then toss them afterwards? I feel like that would be a bit wasteful and a little spendy.

Edit: Not very good at formatting on reddit yet, but i had another question. I mixed this a couple weeks ago and just tasted it last night.

Snowy Fuji from ELR

(FA) Fuji Apple @ 3.5%

(CAP) Caramel v2 (couldn't find v1 anywhere) @ 2.5%

(TPA) Bavarian Cream @ 4%

It tastes like burnt wood. Not getting any other flavors from it besides a horrid burnt wood taste. Anyone know why this might be?

Thanks for any and all replies.

You can get 100 10ml bottles for $15 from Dropperbottles but glass is a good option too, if you don't mind rinsing and drying them.

And because you're getting into single flavor testing it's definitely worth reading Concrete's Single Flavor Testing Part 1 and Part 2

1 points

by JayRukusalmost 7 years ago

Hmm. 100 bottles might be the way to go. I'll definitely go read through those now.

2 points

by coop34almost 7 years ago

I see Apex gave a solid option for bottles question. I came to say that that caramel is what's ruining that mix. There are many better choices, but a really good one for pairing with apple is FW Salted. I would bump it up to 4%.

I personally would drop fuji and bavarian to 2%. If I had to guess, that recipe was prob made using a low wattage device from back in the day.

Welcome!

by JooseMakerWannabeover 6 years ago

When I first started diy, I was told to single flavor test all of my flavors. It was great advice. It's the best way to really get to know your flavors, as well as to find out what you like. Also, the Flavor reviews on this sub are priceless info. They can give you a starting percentage for lots of flavors.

1 points

by JayRukusover 6 years ago

I am definitely going to start tasting all the flavors I get individually. Which could take a while because I am getting another 15+ on Monday. Cant remember how large that order was. But I'll have over 20 flavors to start testing.

1 points

by Phatpharm269over 6 years ago

I just bought a testtube rack and some 10ml flip cap plastic tubes plus 10 borosilicate ones.

Going to do some % profiling and blending.

1 points

by bcuiltyalmost 7 years ago

So I was looking to get into this. I looked at a view recipes and they all have like percents of flavors. So say I put in 100 ml of vg. If it says 1% of lemon flavor does that mean 1% of 100 mls?

5 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 7 years ago

Yes. It's the very defenition of a percentage.

1 points

by akatash23over 6 years ago

If you want to make 100ml, then 1% of X means 1ml X, 99 ml base. If you already have 100ml base, mathematically you can't just add 1ml X, because then you'd have 101ml with 1ml X, which is less then 1%.

I know math is hard. Use an e liquid calculator.

by horrendalmost 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

I'm making someone a single flavour mix of inw black for pipe (he only likes simple tobaccos) and was wondering what % to use for mtl? I like 3% myself in a subohm but not sure if it needs upping?

2 points

by kindgroundalmost 7 years ago

If it's a normal MTL device 3% should still do the trick. If it's a pod device you may want to go up to 4%.

1 points

by horrendalmost 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Thank you, it's a normal MTL so I'll stick with 3%

Any good CDN suppliers of Nic around? Has to be 100+mg

My 2 year stash of a litre o' 200mg is nearly out.

Last time I used ECX but they have stricter shipping now for here

3 points

by Apexifiedover 6 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

If VapersTek will ship to you, I'd recommend them. It seems like all the Canadian nic suppliers get mixed reviews. Not sure what /u/juthinc uses, but I imagine he's a picky bastard and could steer you in the right direction.

2 points

by juthincover 6 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Unfortunately for him, Canada's recent antivaping law banned nic concentration above 64mg/ml for sale to consumers. Most vendors have taken that to mean that DIYers are consumers... IIRC dashvapes has held the position that the law only applies to finished juice, and continues to sell100mg/ml but other vendors have been handed a mandatory recall on their nicotine sold since the bill became law. Doesn't matter to me much, I put 2l of nic source in my freezer after I read the draft of the bill. Should I need to re-up, I would probably use my business to import direct from Chemnovatic.

1 points

by Phatpharm269over 6 years ago

Thanks for the info, had no idea our govt is that retarded. Would however make (a little sense) to limit the mg for pods etc at 64.

As for lab chems, there's only ever shipping restrictions on specific concentrations and volitility

1 points

by Phatpharm269over 6 years ago

Thx, sometimes emailing vendors get better results too. May contact DIY out of Abbotsford, BC

Found an old thread... All recommended BrokeVaper but they only sell 48mg and I have tons of VG/PG at home.

Hello quick question is it possible to mix two bases ? I’d like to mix a 30%pg/70%pg base of 1L and a 50/50 one in order to get 2L of 40pg/70pg base. Is it feasible? And does it need to mature or is it ready to use (for mixing with concentrates) Thank you very much

It will work. I assume you have 70/30 VG/PG. you will end up with 60/40 VG/PG and you should be good to go just shaking it up.
