Weekly Questions Thread - Week of December 17, 2018
submitted almost 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page. If you’re a New Mixer check out the DIY Beginners Guide and the links below then feel free to ask about anything you’re still not clear on.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights from last week:

Is anyone reading this?

  • /u/k4win gave thanks to the sub and /u/AlfredPudding for helping them achieve their first mix.
  • /u/isuamadog helped get everyone ready for Recipe of the Year with an abridged compilation of the top recipes from the monthly threads.
  • /u/mixmintress shared a cautionary tale about fraudulent charges and vendors with questionable site security/payment processing (a theme that repeats itself year after year)
  • /u/ShittyStrawman wrote an excellent Recipe Help post detailing their attempts at creating an authentic jam on toast.
  • The Clone-y Professor himself, /u/DarkJester89 brought out the holiday spirit for December's Clone Challenge
  • /u/Grunty123 made amends. It's so nice when we can all get along.

And finally, a recipe emerged...

And you're a highlight in the highlights that are the highlight of your week, dog.

Woke up thinking there were already a bunch of questions in here but instead it was a nice confirmation that I'm not wasting my 'breath' with the highlights. Good start to the day :)

I also enjoy the highlights, because things have been busy.

I think i asked right at the tail end of last week; does anyone know of anywhere other than Bull City that does APO shipping? Or shipping to Japan that isn't ridiculous?

nic river. their website won't process an order to fpo/ap but you can contact customer service directly to finalize your purchase

Oh, did not know that. Thank you very much!

You won't qualify for free shipping but they will process your order if you contact a customer representative directly. Just build your cart on their website and copy & paste it into an email. PM me if you're stuck. I have my contacts with nic riv and they're lovely people, quick to respond, and very professional.

Firstly, Thank You All. The knowledge I've gained reading has been enormous.

I'm looking to get started DIYing. I've read the starting suggested flavors and recipes utilizing those flavors but they don't fit my taste. I was hoping that you lovely folks would be kind enough to guide me to the flavors I should start with that are more along my tastes.

I don't enjoy fruit and berry flavors. I don't enjoy overly sweet flavors. I don't enjoy sour flavors.

I do enjoy all citrus flavors. I do enjoy menthol. I do enjoy cooling flavors. I do enjoy anise.

I can stand the berry lemonades and such because of the lemon. I can stand cream and cake flavors.

I know im asking alot but I do greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

by PepperMyJabrillalmost 7 years ago

I enjoy citrus flavors a lot as well, and personally, INW Shisha Lemon is my favorite. It’s bright and syrupy, and I feel like it’s the most versatile in terms of playing well with both fruits and bakeries.

VT Honey Pomelo is another solid citrus- very crisp and one of the more pronounced grapefruits I’ve tried.

I’d recommend FA for limes. TPA Key Lime is good but can be pretty harsh, and INW Shisha Lime is good but always falls a little flat for me.

by _BeardedBaby_almost 7 years ago

Thank you. This will help tremendously. Your tastes sound similar to mine, if you can suggest some recipes, I can pull the flavors I need for them get a good starting base of 20 flavors.

by PepperMyJabrillalmost 7 years ago

Pomelo Bomb is a nice pomelo lemonade, and Sweet Stuff is a simple raspberry lemonade.

INW Shisha Lemon @ 1%, FA Madagascar (Vanilla) @ 1%, and EuroFlavor Graham Cracker @ 3% is something I've been enjoying. It's a simple lemon graham flavor, but be warned that EuroFlavor Graham Cracker doesn't have a traditional graham cracker taste. It's kinda creamy with a spiced note, and it goes great with lemons. You could easily substitute it with another graham if you want.

And one of my favorite citrus recipes is FA Lemon Sicily @ 1%, CAP Juicy Lemon @ 1%, TPA Key Lime @ 1%, TPA Bavarian Cream @ 1%, TPA Vanilla Swirl @ 2%, and INW Shisha Vanilla @ 0.5%. The original recipe came from u/EdibleMalfunction (I think it was posted almost a year ago in a daily discussion post- I can't find it, though). He originally used DIYFS Holy Vanilla instead of Shisha Vanilla, and he didn't use lime. I tweaked it, and this was where I landed. It's just a really good creamy citrus recipe.

by LecherousLumberjackalmost 7 years agoI put on women's clothing and hang around in bars

Anyone else get an email around black friday from Nicotine River saying they will be having a mid-December sale instead of a black friday sale? I have been waiting for it (was broke at the time anyway) and it looks like it's just 25% off of flavors they're no longer going to even sell. Seems pretty terrible imo considering a lot of the popular flavors are already sold out anyway.

3 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 7 years ago

Are you sure that's what it is? I took that as the flash sale being a separate thing.

Edit: I'm fairly certain the two are separate. The flash sale lists equipment as well. The 25% off requires a code

2 points

by LecherousLumberjackalmost 7 years agoI put on women's clothing and hang around in bars

> Are you sure that's what it is?

Not at all! That's why I asked here to see if I had just misunderstood.

To check if the flash sale and 25% code were separate, I put a flavor from the flash sale (CAP Green Apple 10ml $1.29) and one not on sale (FA Forest Fruit 4oz $18) in my cart. I then applied the HOLIDAY discount code and got $0.32 off of $19.29. So the code definitely only works for flash sale items.

If I misunderstood what you meant, I apologize.

I just noticed I fucked up my order for base, I got 80 pg 20 vg instead of the other way around. If my calculations are correct I need to mix it with 1,5 liters of pure VG to end up with 68 vg 32 pg.

Anyone got any other suggetions?

1 points

by isuamadogalmost 7 years ago

Just buy 1 gallon of vg and be set for a while?

1 points

by Apexifiedalmost 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

I'd at least try to see if the vendor will help you out. Even though it's your fault, they might be cool and fix it.

Beyond replacing it I'd say it's not worth the effort and math to fix the ratio unless you happen to like a final ratio of 50/50 VG/PG (or close to that) or are willing to get even more VG, as /u/isuamadog suggested, in order to raise the VG significantly more.

1 points

by therapy420almost 7 years ago

I sent them a message but only noticed it after the shipping confirmation. Fingers crossed.

1 points

by Kroliver14almost 7 years agoMixologist

You can usually find gallon sized VG and PG on amazon for around $30 and then just mix your own so you know your getting what you want and you can change the VG/PG as you wish with each batch.

2 points

by Apexifiedalmost 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

They're in Belgium, so I'm not sure if that's a viable option. But to your point on gallons of VG/PG, Nic River sells (at least VG) for half that price. Unless the only thing DIY related you need is a liter or gallon of VG, Amazon isn't the best price (but you will get it faster with Prime)

1 points

by Kroliver14almost 7 years agoMixologist

NicRiver is cheaper just checked. $15 for a gallon but by the time you pay $23 to ship it its the same cost as on amazon and amazon ships in 2 days.

Any historians happen to know how long Baker Flavors has been around? I finally caved in and got 5 of their flavors, and I’ll be god damned if Klondike doesn’t taste like the perfect fit for an actual Boba’s Bounty clone. Just mixed up a simple 3 ingredient test to see how close it is, and it’s probably closer than I got in my few months of attempting it. I did what I could to research how long they’ve been around, and the best I could find on their website was some Q&A that were answered in 2009.

2 points

by Apexifiedalmost 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Where did you get them? I've always kinda suspected Baker might have been responsible for some of the early vendors having such a hard time keeping their juices in stock. At least from what I've heard, it's incredibly difficult to communicate with them when trying to order large quantities direct and whole shipments have a tendency to get lost in the Russian post.

by Dumaecralmost 7 years ago

Just as a side note, they’re available at Svoemesto (ru) and they ship internationally, ~$1.48/10ml.

I should have asked about a week ago :(

1 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimalmost 7 years agoresident tobacco expert

I got them from Vaping Zone. Saw the comment below, and now my balls hurt because I paid $8/10ml for them. At least the word on the streets was true and they are super strong.

I tried emailing BF directly to get some info on how long they’ve been around, and how long Klondike specifically has been around. Not really holding my breath on an answer.

by burned00almost 7 years ago

I quit vaping, but I still have a large amount of bottles and flavors. Is there any place I can sell/give these away?

1 points

by Apexifiedalmost 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Yeah, you can post it over in /r/ecigclassifieds/ and then x-post it here. Just make sure you're not listing nicotine for sale.

2 points

by morefiendalmost 7 years ago

Apparently, that sub doesn't allow sales of flavorings or PG/vg.

1 points

by Up2myheadalmost 7 years ago

Wasn't there a DIY swap sub? Or am I misremebering.

It's a shame that the claasies took that stance, I have some stuff I'd love to trade.

1 points

by burned00almost 7 years ago

Cool thanks. I don't have any, but why no nicotine?

1 points

by Apexifiedalmost 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Reddit policy. We can talk about nicotine and vendors who carry it but we can't offer to sell it here or even link to vendors who sell it.

TFA Blueberry Wild standalone percentage on a 50/50 pg/vg base?

2 points

by Phatpharm269almost 7 years ago

It is very true to taste, and so utterly subtle that you will barely know it's not straight VG

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 7 years ago

Zero. It's not a great standalone flavor.

1 points

by 290mgalmost 7 years ago

Saw it metioned but okay, i'll trust you in thid. I've read that it could go well with INW Raspberry? Any other recommendations?

be careful with INW raspberry. It's very potent. .05 - 1 g max

A good strawberry combo with strawberry ripe, strawberry (TPA) and cap sweet strawberry manly for deserts/cream

1 points

by lpzin420almost 7 years ago

I wish a strawberry "base" to add on deserts recipes with those 3 strawberries that I've mentioned :)

2 points

If you know what you want to use, you should be able to play around with the percentages and test it out.

1 points

by Bobbybezoalmost 7 years ago

I keep reading that some flavor fades. I wonder if the concentrate themselves fades or if it mostly fades in recipes or/and mixed juices.

I'm wondering since I would buy smaller bottles of those if it's to fade before I used it all up.

Can't find phenolic cap liners, I have only got Euro dropper bottles which lets Nicotine get oxidized.

What if your new to Reddit and this Subgroup, and using the App and not sure of the rules to this thread because the App doesn't allow you to see it on IOS ?. Will the rules officer start attacking newcomers like in other threads I witnessed?. Is there some leeway?

2 points

by Apexifiedalmost 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

The sidebar is accessible through the majority of apps and easily accessed from your mobile browser. There is a lot of leeway and in this thread anything that doesn’t break Reddit’s rules is allowed. Who is the rules officer attacking people?

new to vaping and e-juice diy. recently bought some ivg e-liquids, and want to get into diy.

so in order to do so i bought a 500ml 70vg/30PG and two ivg concentrates.

the two i bought were rainbow and bubblegum.

My question is, has anyone used any concentrates by ivg, and are you really supposed to use 16-19 % like the bottle says??

thanks for any answer given.

1 points

by horrendalmost 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

You should mix it at the recommended percentage first to try it, then you can use more or less for your tastes. A lot of vendor one shots I see are high percentage mixes.

Also your final juice won't be 70/30 because the 16-19% flavour in the one shot is more than likely suspended in PG.

1 points

by JayRukusalmost 7 years ago

Had a quick question for this discussion. I'm pretty new to DIY, so far I've mixed about 6 of my own 15ml bottles. The reason I started mixing my own juice is because its way cheaper to do so, and everything on the market is way to god damn sweet.

I was looking at the Unicorn Milk Leak recipe because everyone seems to praise the shit out of it. So my questions are:

A) It uses (CAP) Sweet Cream @ 1.5% and (CAP) Strawberry Sweet @ 8.5%. I've never used these concentrates as i only have a small selection. Are they overly sweet / do they make this overly sweet?

B) Since I've started mixing my own juice I don't have to clean my coils every couple days from all the BS black build-up of sweetener from all "premium" juices. I'm 3 weeks in on some coils and they have no residue on them. Will this recipe gunk up my coils quickly? I'm assuming Sweet anything has a sweetener added to it like sucrose or something?

Thanks for any replies. Trying to get better at this without spending $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on trial and error. Although i do expect to waste a bit figuring it out.

Edit: Also, everything I've had so far with Vanilla in it has tasted like straight pepper to me. This recipe has Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (CAP) and Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) in it. Do these taste like pepper to anyone?

3 points

by coop34almost 7 years ago

That "leaked" recipe was a whole lot of circle-jerking, don't expect a great experience with it.

A) Those 2 aren't sweet, just a naming thing.

B) If you don't add sweetener, that recipe is not a coil gunker.

Edit: Sweet Strawberry is worth adding to your stash, it's a staple for me.

2 points

by horrendalmost 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

I don't use strawberry flavours because I can't taste them so can't answer that bit. 8.5% does seem a bit high though but someone else might be able to confirm if it is or isn't.

Tasting pepper in VBIC is common but pepper tasters normally get it from TFA not CAP. LB vanilla ice cream is a nice one and people don't get the pepper taste from it.

2 points

by JooseMakerWannabealmost 7 years ago

I can second what horrend said about LB vanilla ice cream-it's tasty. I can't use VBIC by TFA because of the peppery taste. I don't have any problem with Cap Vanilla Custard-it tastes great. Yep, you will waste a bit on trial and error but it's the only way to find what you like/dislike. It's so much cheaper than trying to find something you like in commercial juice though. When you can, get yourself some 10ml tester bottles (or even 5ml!) and use them to test all your flavors and any recipes you think you might like. If you don't like something, you haven't invested much in finding that out.

1 points

by JayRukusalmost 7 years ago

Alright. So you make a 10ml of every new single flavor that you get so you can test the taste? Do you mix it at the same VG/PG you mix your juices at?

3 points

by JooseMakerWannabealmost 7 years ago

Yes I do sft (single flavor test) all of my flavors. It's the best way to get to know them, and to find what you like/don't like about them. Also when trying a new recipe, I make a 10ml first to see how it tastes. I use the same VG/PG and nicotine.

I've been making my own juice for sub-ohm use for a while now. And I like flavor. I usually aim for about 15% on average in a recipe. Now I want to start making my own juice for my pod mod. I'm running a suorin vagon. I've got all the materials, including nicotine salts, but don't know what my flavor percentage should be.

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 7 years ago

It depends on the recipe. Pod mixes do best with simple profiles.
