A Question On Glycerine
submitted almost 7 years ago by epistemopholicIdiot

I want to start a new conversation on glycerine and it's safety.

I live in an African country where VG is almost impossible to find(Not South Africa, VG is available there for relatively inexpensive). I have been ordering my VG from Liquid Barn for the last year or so but it hits my pocket harder than the stinky sticks used to because of the crazy expensive shipping. I need to forward it using a third party to do customs clearing etc. not so straight forward as in first world countries. I have contacted some local chemical supply companies as well as some food industry companies and am currently waiting for feedback on whether I can buy VG(USP grade, preferably) from them in bulk 5L/10L.

Here is my dilemma; I found a skin care product that is produced by a local company for an incredibly good price, roughly $0.80/100ml. Renew Skin Care - Label indicates 100% Glycerine, BP(British Pharma) Grade. My understanding is that Glycerol, Glycerine and Glycerin are all the same product, yet different nomenclature.

I will post a picture as an edit to this thread later when I can. I will also give the product manufactures a call to confirm if it is synthetic, animal derived or plant derived - or a mix, I guess - but in the mean time; Do you think it would be safe to vape based on the information we currently have?

They are the same things and if it says BP, you're good to go.

If it truly is 100% or 99.*% then it should have no additives inside it and should be good to vapr but i would taste test it first.

Taste test reveals a tasteless, mildly sweet and viscous liquid. Odorless too. No expert, but I do say that I cannot tell a difference from the usual VG I use.

You are absolutely correct, and since it's a pharmacy it should be exactly what it says it is. Would at least do a sniff-test to be sure though, if there is any perfume in there, it could make it foul-tasting and potentially harmfull. Glycerine is also used in some baking, so there is a decent chance to find it from well-assorted shops or baking-suppliers.

The source of the glycerine is not important(unless for religious/vegetarian reasons) as the molecules are the same.

You should also be able to find clean Propylene Glycol at the pharmacy. They might not have it in, but should be able to order it for you.

That answers one of the biggest questions I have had. Still don't understand why everyone seems to be 100% that you'd die if it's not derived from vegetable oils. Thanks!

Great find! Thank you for doing your due diligence before asking someone else to do it for you, well done!

I vaped skin care grade VG before. As far as I could tell it was the same thing.

Cosmetics grade isn't certified for internal use. Personally I would not risk inhaling that. Food grade absolute minimum.

Yeah. I only buy stuff I'm sure is pharmacy/lab grade because of how it's used. But any source should be basically the same.

Since I have the options I will only buy USP, but I was in a pinch and was gone for a weekend without juice. Friend had a bottle of skin care VG he got on amazon and it kinda saved me. I'd have no reservations ordering exclusively that if I had so much trouble getting USP.

Products containing Glycerine marketed for Skin Care usually contain Natural Oils or Aloe Vera etc.,.

If it doesn't, I would recommend buying a small quantity 50 ml etc.,

and Test

  1. Sniff (no smell)
  2. Taste (slight tingling sweetness)
  3. Viscosity (A little Syrupy)
  4. Vape (No harshness, hint of sweetness)

The only thing that gives me the incline it is pure glycerin is that fact that under "Ingredients" it states 100% Glycerin, BP Grade. Thanks for your input on steps to follow!
