Strawberry jam on toast is not exactly a new profile, and I understand that it has been covered extensively, mostly in regards to cloning Jam Monster's offering.
This is NOT what I'm trying to make. I understand the popularity of Jam Monster, but here in the UK the most well known commercial take on this profile is Jam On Toast by Just Jam.
It's far less sweet than its American counterpart, and in my humble opinion substantially more authentic, without destroying coils.
The toast base is fairly easy to accomplish. Solub Arome's Breakfast has a true toasted bread note. Add a generous helping of CAP Golden butter and the toast base is complete.
2-3% SA Breakfast
1-2% CAP Golden butter
The part that continues to elude me is the strawberry jam. The note in Just Jam's offering is just so authentic. It's not just a good strawberry, or even just a good "jammy" strawberry, it literally smells and tastes like the real thing. I am trying to be smart in my search by excluding things which were definitely NOT available when Just Jam launched (early 2016).
**I'm a big fan of strawberry and these are the concentrates I've tried so far: **
INW Shisha Strawberry - we all know this is a great strawberry, but it's more syrupy than jammy.
TFA Strawberry - far too candied for this profile
TFA Strawberry ripe - it works, and could be part of the mix, but is definitely not the key ingredient.
CAP Strawberry sweet - nope
FE Strawberry - too candied
FA Strawberry - lacks the punch needed for a true jam
FA Jammy Wizard - emphasises candy notes more than anything, and was not available when Just Jam launched.
SA Strawberry Jam - certainly nice, but not the right Strawberry in this instance (makes a great baked Strawberry filling though)
RF SC Strawberry Jam On Toast - found in the Jam Monster clones, but definitely not in Just Jam.
**Strawberries/additives I have not tried: **
INW Wild Strawberry
FLV Alpine Strawberry (not sure if this was available in 2016?)
PUR Strawberry offerings
OOO Strawberry offerings
JF Strawberry offerings
FW Strawberry offerings
FA Liquid Amber
Of course, with the number of strawberries available, I've barely scratched the surface, but I do feel that I've tried many of the well regarded "authentic" strawberries.
I've heard in the past that FA Liquid Amber brings some "jammy" notes to a mix, could this be the missing ingredient to some kind of Strawberry ripe + FA red touch combo?
I'm all ears for suggestions, hopefully this thread can provide useful information for others wanting to improve their Jam profiles :)
While I have no idea how to help you I do want to thank you for writing a proper recipe help post. If more people would put in the time like this instead of "I want to make this. Give me recipe!" they might find that some of us are not quite the assholes they believe us to be.
Haha I've been lurking here for a long time, and I definitely get that there's a tough balancing act to make this sub a useful resource, whilst also being welcoming!
I think the main issue we run into here is that many would be mixers that stumble across this sub don't realise how much knowledge there is to be found with the search bar..
EDIT: I would like to note that there are times when the odd person is overly harsh, but I feel this has improved greatly in the last few months
Great post. I found SA Breakfast to be quite an overdone toast, as in slightly burnt. I'm guessing the CAP Golden butter helps with this. A month or 2 ago I fiddled around with a peanut butter and strawberry jam on toast, and suggest you try something like this for your jam:
RF Strawberry 2%
JF Sweet Strawberry 1%
TFA Strawberry Ripe 2%
FA Liquid Amber 0.5%
Thanks so much for this! Yes, SA Breakfast does have a "burnt" note, although that sounds like something you'd want to avoid entirely, in small quantities it adds authenticity, and the butter does indeed help ;)
Looks like another Chef's order is happening...
EDIT: is that the regular RF Strawberry or the one from their super concentrated line?
>EDIT: is that the regular RF Strawberry or the one from their super concentrated line?
Yes get the RF Strawberry SC - as far as I know, anything that's not 'SC' is part of their VG line. I'll have to finally get some CAP Golden Butter.
I get a very jammy strawberry from jungle flavors. Id start there for testing. Good luck!
Is it their Strawberry, Strawberry Sweet or Strawberry Harvest that's achieving this for you?
I believe it’s the sweet I’ll check tonight after work and let you know. Also if you don’t have it get their yellow cake and biscuit too. Both are amazing!
UPDATE: I'd like to thank everyone for their contributions to this project.
I'm ordering the following concentrates to see if i can crack the code:
JF Strawberry
JF Strawberry Sweet
RF SC Strawberry
FA Butter
FA Liquid amber
I'm hoping that one of these strawberries + Liquid Amber is the key. Upon further research it seems that FA Butter is supposedly even better than either CAP of TFA's offerings, so I feel that's worth a shot too!
I would love to hear what you think of jf strawberry. I can't find any reviews on it.
I've had some success with both elements individually but getting them to match up was a major pain in the dick.
My toast was as follows:
1% Cap SL biscuit 1 drop acetyl pirazene or however it's spelt. This may still be too high.
My jam was probably
Cap sweet strawberry FA fragola TFA strawberry ripe Drops of super sweet to taste.
As I said, it was not perfect because the elements did not work together.. But each version I made had strong points. Perhaps mixing them as flavour bases and trying different proportions of each is the next step for me
This recipe by u/hashslingingslashur is the most authentic I've had the pleasure to taste.
u/ShittyStrawman did you have any joy with those other flavours you ordered? I have recently embarked on the same cloning quest as you, and like you I've been let down by most of the well regarded strawberry flavours. I was also most annoyed to discover that FA Candy/Jammy Wizard should really just be called Candy Wizard, and neither do I find Liquid Amber to be the answer - it's really a cider flavour, which is why it works in apple pie, but it doesn't turn strawberry flavour into strawberry jam, imo. If you haven't tried it, Chef's Choice Strawberry Jam (rebottled Cupcake World) is the most authentic jam flavour I've tried, it's sticky, slightly tangy, and just tastes different to all the other strawberry concentrates in a really fundamental (and good) way. It's not a 'jammy Strawberry' - it is strawberry Jam, if you get what I mean, lol. The fact that it is made by a UK flavour house also gives me a bit of confidence it may be being used by a UK juice company, to make a very British type popular treat. I think it's a very useful ingredient for this, even if it's not the only strawberry flavour used. It was also definitely around back in 2016 as well.
I also highly recommend Rainbow Vapes Intense Range Toast flavour (from rainbowvapes in the UK). It's a single flavour from their in house concentrates range, which aren't one shots, they're original flavours. Tastes exactly like toasted bread, very nice, and i don't get a burned note from it. They also do in the same range 3 different flavours of jam on toast, which may be the shortcut to this problem, but I haven't tried them as of yet, as i was hoping to develop my own recipe - mixers pride aside though, a commercial juice company could well be using only, or mostly, a single concentrate for a profile as simple as this one.
Could you clarify something for me please? I thought SA Breakfast WAS toast with jam already on it..? They do 2 versions, with different flavour jams, and a plain Toast flavour as well (at least it shows these on rainbow vapes' site). Where did you get your flavors from? Was it Chef's? Cos I just looked there, and the SA section doesn't have any flavours in it any more. Did you already try a combo of SA Strawberry Jam and other strawberries? And different percentages? I was just about to order it, should I bother? I'd be interested to collaborate with you on cracking this profile if you like, I'd be happy to order a few concentrates to do so. I have a few other ideas as well for getting that elusive perfect strawberry jam...
Hey there, sorry for the late reply, I've been seriously neglecting my mixing as of late!
I've yet to even try any of the flavours I ordered, but can tell from smell alone that it's very unlikely that I've found the "jam" I'm looking for.
Someone suggested CAP blueberry jam, and ever since they did that, I've noticed a DISTINCT blueberry accent in Just Jam on toast...it could be a placebo, but I'll definitely be ordering some regardless.
In regards to the SA breakfast, I have both, and they are described as having jam already, though to me it's very, very mild. Breakfast #1 is supposed to have Strawberry Jam, and I barely taste it, Breakfast #2 is marmalade if I'm not mistaken, and it's a bit more present, but not what I'm looking for!
I had always assumed that Chef's/Rainbow own brand stuff was either one shots, so thanks for that info, I'll have to check them out for sure!
IIRC, SA also has 'toast' flavor. But on another note, I've heard other limey mixers claim FA Blackcurrant is useful for turning other flavors 'jammy', so you could try adding a bit of that.
