Never DIY'd e juice
submitted almost 7 years ago by JayRukus

Whats up all, i've been vaping on and off for some years now but can never stick with it for longer than maybe a few months at a time. Usually its because I have never been able to find a tank that suits me. And the other reason is that I don't really like any of the "premium" flavors. I've recently picked my mod up again and put a new tank on it once again trying to find one that I like, and I think that I have. I have been smoking for 15 years and have been hoping this can be an alternative to get me to quit. The problem that I'm having now is that every ejuice I have tried recently is WAY TO FUCKING SWEET. Every e juice tastes like I'm sucking on a sugar cube with some slight hints of flavor here and there. So after some digging, it seems like all the manufactures use a shit ton of sweeteners in their juice to try and attract new people to vaping. This wrecks my coils and just tastes like butt. I've browsed most the sticky's and they all seem pretty old, like 2+ years. So I'm looking for some a point me in the right direction, either to old sticky's that I should re read because they still have good information. Or some newer stuff that has been put out a little more recently. Maybe some premiums that aren't loaded with sucrose that wreck my coils in 2 days. Is it worth the initial investment to buy all the materials I would need for DIY? Or maybe someone should just tell me that I'm wasting my time and I'll never be able to find a flavor that I enjoy and to give up? Also, I usually vape higher VG juices than PG. Been vaping Humble Juice CO juices lately because its pretty hard to say no to 2 120ml bottles for $25. That being said, i usually vape 70 VG and above. I know this is all pretty broad, and I appreciate any feedback.

You need paragraphs like this:

Sounds like you're teetering on the edge mate. I strongly recommend that you jump in. I smoked for 24 years - pack a day. Haven't touched a cig in 1 year 2 months and 16 days. All thanks to vaping, and DIY_eJuice.

DIY is MUCH cheaper than commercial juice. Once you've paid the initial outlay, the cost is minuscule. The juices I make now taste much nicer than commercial juices I've tried. You have full control of what you vape. You decide VG/PG ratios, you decide how strong/weak you like the flavour, you decide how much sweetener, you decide if you prefer more orange or mango in your Orange Mango Juice. You become all powerful. The Creator.

> Is it worth the initial investment to buy all the materials I would need for DIY? . . . because its pretty hard to say no to 2 120ml bottles for $25.

Just for comparison . . . (using prices from Nic River)

|QTY|Item|Price| |:---:|:---|---:| |150ml|100mg/ml Nic|$8.49| |1 liter|VG|$7.49| |500ml|PG|$6.99| |10x10ml|TFA Flavors (@$1.29)|$12.90| ||TOTAL|$36.37|

So for just a little more than the $25 you'd spend on 2 x 120ml, you could make more than 1 liter of DIY juice - and you'd have plenty of nic and PG leftover. To make it even better, the juice you mix would be tailored to your liking. So - yeah - you should definitely get into DIY.

Europe is laughing. People have to pay 3.5 per 10 mls of 20mg nicotine. 150ml x 100mg is 15000mg of nicotine. I need 260 euros to buy that amount of nicotine legally.

It would help us help you if you asked more specific questions. Not sure what "sticky's" you're referring to but there is a lot of information in the sidebar that will help you get started. I'd point you to something specific if the question weren't so broad. Maybe try the DIY Beginner's Guide to start and use the Weekly Questions Thread if you need clarification on anything you come across.

Ok... So, leaving aside how you almost qualify for r/DIFM_eJuice...

Yes, DIY is a good idea if commercially available juices don't appeal to you. However you may need to do your own recipe development, if the problem is anything beyond sweetness. Most recipes you'll find aim for some level of sweetness (except tobacco juices) so even leaving out sweeteners won't completely fix things if you don't like any sweet. And if you don't like some of the inexplicably more commonly used flavors like mango...or strawberry, or vanilla? You'll have a hard time finding recipes to try. But it can be very worthwhile. Eventually you will come up with something orders of magnitude better than what you started making.

Been making ejuice for years, and it's really easy and inexpensive as long as you have the basic tools on the ready.

I never follow recipes or anything, just really throw flavours in that suit my preferences for the given batch. There's only one rule that I follow: Never go over 10% flavouring.

So I have been looking over a lot of recipes on e liquid recipes and every recipe i have looked at has been over 10% on the flavors. Like Mothers Unicorn Milk for example is 26% flavor? Should I steer clear of these recipes?

> Should I steer clear of these recipes?

If it's over 20% I don't make it usually. Certain flavors require more but typically you dont need that much. A lot of those recipes are old. Our equipment has come a long ways in a short time and so have DIY mixers. The knowledgeable ones anyways..

Some people think flavors work like a dial knob. Like you can just crank em up and taste more. It doesn't work that way.

Wasn't expecting replies so quick. Thanks for reformatting my original post, English was my worst subject in school, but I'll try and clean up my posts a bit more from here on out.

I guess The most specific question I could ask right now would be, Are DIY e juices as sweet as premiums? I've read the beginners guide and i should probably read it again. My biggest problem is I'm not sure if its worth investing the money in VG/PG/Nicotine and an X amount of flavors that just wont live up to what I expect from a flavor profile. Also, every vanilla flavor I've ever tried tastes like Pepper. Anyone else have that problem?

Edit: What are some flavors that y'all started with that didn't disappoint? I like most fruit flavors, especially because they are easiest to add menthol too. But one of the best Ive had so far is Humble Juice American Dream, tastes like Fruity Pebbles. But becomes way too sweet after about half a tank. After that all i can taste is the sweetener.

"Premium" is made up of the same exact ingredients as DIY, there's nothing proprietary except the recipe. You can have DIY juice 10 times sweeter than commercial if you add enough sucralose or you can leave it out altogether. Is it worth it? In the long run you can save a lot of money or become obsessed with it and have a lot of fun while saving nothing. That's entirely up to you.

Lots of people have issues tasting pepper with vanillas but plenty of vanillas exist that don't cause that issue (for most people)

>Are DIY e juices as sweet as premiums?

Jay, you make the juice so you decide how much sweetener goes in. You don't have to add any if you don't want to.

I suppose I'm going to just have to jump in and try it out. I have a handful of RBA's and RTA's that are part of the reason i haven't been able to stick with vaping. I just don't have the time with my job to be rebuilding and rewicking all the time. I enjoy making coils, but holy hell is it time consuming for me haha. I've found i like the tfv8 & tfv12 because coil heads are fairly cheap and replacing them couldn't be any more simple. So now it just boils down to the fact I don't like any flavors that i've bought. Looks like i'll be going back over the sidebar topics and putting a shopping list together.

Do yourself a favor and a get a couple good rdas if you're gonna mix juice. If you don't want to make coils lightning vapes and advanced vape supply have many to choose from.

You should just buy prewrapped coils if you don't have time to make your own. advancedvapesupply.com has great coils for a fair price, you should check them out. it's about $12 for 10 minus shipping.

I clean my coils and rewick about once a month, using homemade juice that doesn't have any (added) sweeteners. All cleaning the coils takes is burning excess juice off, get it glowing and dunk into water, and scrape it off with a wire brush, looks good as new. Rewick, done. Usually takes me 20 minutes but I'm kind of a noob still. Hell I would spend 10 minutes trying to twist my tfv12 open to replace the atty back when I exclusively used it haha, shit was always so tight.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that tanks just ain't worth it if you're trying to save money... Half the coils I got for my tfv12 were tasting burnt within a week and I'd be lucky if one tasted OK 2 weeks later. Horizontech Falcon has pretty good coils, they always lasted me 2-3 weeks but once I got my first RDA I just saved so much since my initial investment, that I can't see myself going back. Good luck on your journey my friend.

Damn, you only have to clean your coils once a month? I was having to clean mine like once every few days when i was using my Bonza RDA.

by WynterRaynealmost 7 years ago

I'm really amazed at all the people who say this about TFV12. I have the baby version and have never had a bad coil in the months I've had it. They take a bit of break-in and need to be well primed, but otherwise pretty darn good.

Please walk me through the dunking part... I'm somewhat nervous about the idea of sticking my mod in water. can I just drip water on it?

Just like others here have already explained, get into DIY it is definitely worth it in terms of flavor and cost. Also if you don't already have one, get a rebuildable Atomizer (RDA if you don't have a problem with dripping otherwise a RDTA to have a Tank)

With some basic tools (you can get sets 20-30 USD) wire and Cotton, you can make your own coils. The advantage is that once the cotton is burned out you dont have to get a new coil, you can just clean the metal coil and change your cotton.

Building your own coils combined with making your own juice will save you so much money in the long run, that it realy isn't worth it to start smoking again.

2 points

by sirnickdalmost 7 years ago

just make sure that if you're in it to save money that you get that RDTA right away and try to find an ADV asap or else you'll be throwing quite a bit of money (thank god i got some decent ADV juices that i can cycle through)

1 points

by JayRukusalmost 7 years ago

Any suggestions on an RDTA that's easy to build on? I have a Kylan that I have rewicked more times than I can count and can not get it to stop leaking.

I've been vaping on and off for about 5 years. I have wrapped my own coils for a while and am OK at it. I'd say I have the basics down at least. But finding RDAs and RDTAs that are "easy" to work with isn't all that easy. That being said, I really like my Bonza RDA. But the coils get trashed so quick from the juices I buy I dont use it very often.

I'm sure there are plenty of other options out there but a couple of my favorites for how easy to build and wick are the Pharaoh mini RTA and the SMM Serpent for tanks and the Recurve RDA I use on a squonk box. All these are single coil and are really easy to build. Very minimal leakage on any of these tanks in my experience. Premade coils are the way to go. I've got no time to wrap coils anymore.

Just ordered a Serpent SMM. What coil do you run in this thing? I was thinking Quad core fused Clapton with 5 wraps.

As others have said here DIY is the way to go but one suggestion....choose a couple of recipes from http://e-liquid-recipes.com or https://alltheflavors.com/ that you like the look of and buy the flavours for them. Also research a lot before buying new flavours...a lot of people (including myself) end up buying flavours they hardly ever use....good luck to you.

by mixmintressalmost 7 years ago

You will absolutely save money (caveat: if you don't go wild buying random flavors before researching, but honestly still I think you'd save money in the end for sure) and definitely will fix the sweetener-loaded juice issue. DIY can be very very simple and cheap--it's really only as complicated as we make it.

What type of juice flavors do you like? Menthol/mint, fruit, herb, bakery, etc? We can give you some suggestions for simple recipes you may like.

Search the board for 1-2-3 recipes, single flavor "recipes", "simple recipes"--those literally use a few flavors tops. Also there are 2 sites most use for recipes now, one is called "all the flavors" and one is called ELR (e-liquid-recipes.com). ATF is more modern but plenty of decent stuff on ELR--but where ELR shines is in the notes on individual flavors. There's just more material there IMO.

Don't be afraid to ask questions especially in the weekly questions thread and the weekly what can I make with these flavors thread.

(I find questions anywhere fair game but it can bring out the grump in some posters which is why I mention it. I don't like new posters being blindsided and chased off.

Still, as my pappy said, Fuck'em, what do you care? You'll be making juice and saving money no matter whose panties get bunched.)

Second caveat: if you don't have self control and like playing with allllllllllll the flavors you will also not save money. I have no regrets.

One question I have for you off the top of my head:

Do you mix by volume or by weight?

2 points

by mixmintressalmost 7 years ago

I started off mixing by volume, then I started mixing by weight because everyone said it was so much easier--but I didn't find it easier, probably because my scale was so crappy and just messed up constantly. Then the scale broke, and I'm mixing by volume again and I have so many syringes and pipettes (100s, I hit some crazy dented box deals so they were dirt cheap ) that I kinda am not that motivated to buy another scale.

Most people say weight is drastically easier. It wasn't my experience but like, the vast vast majority do find weight easier.

well, start making your own juice...get sone vg/pg..some nic and some simple flavours...get some 10ml bottles and start mixing.

For "premiums" with no added Sweetner try apothecary elixers or red house vapor

I've been making my own juice for a year and a half. I didn't start doing it to save money. I did it because for my $20 I wanted a bigger bottle of liquid. "Premium" E Juice is the biggest ripoff in vaping.

.

For equipment I've tried every style of atomizer. (Some) people here always suggest getting an RDA. They're great for saving money but they're not for everyone. I actually prefer pre-built coil heads. Especially the newer ones like dual or triple mesh. Sure they cost a bit but I like them better. They are consistently awesome and last a long time. You dont have to swap out the cotton every few days either. I don't mind paying for the convenience. I still have RTA's in my everyday rotation but not RDA's. There is no one size fits all when it comes to atomizer preference. You have to try them to see which YOU prefer.

.

This isn't aimed at anybody. I just thought I'd post my thoughts.

I prefer tanks by far! I have all the other stuff but I rarely use any of it. I just don't like dripping or even, my lord, squonking that much.

What tank/tanks do you use?

Having to try them to find what suits you is what sucks. I have an entire drawer full of wasted $$ on RDAs/RDTAs.

One thing to consider for your next order are flavor packs or premixed recipes like one shots.

If you find that you don’t like what you’ve mixed and you’re a bit frustrated, it can help to buy the sets for popular recipes and see how other people have made something balanced and pleasant. Welcome to the club!

Man I just been vaping for 6 mo. And I’ve already jumped in with both feet. I bought a scale and gallon of vg and liter of pg. I got few flavors and I am rolling. Some stuff tase like ass but make only 10 ml and I just vape it anyways. But then the next one taste grea. So don’t give up man just go with it. And before you know it you’ll be off the stinkies. Lol
