I can't stand the taste of nic salts
submitted almost 7 years ago by juice_buyer

This started a few months ago when I was in a hurry and made an unflavored batch with LNW nic salts. It was not unflavored like freebase, and I found the taste to be very off-putting. The problem now is that I can taste that flavor in almost all salted juice, diy or commercial. I only use strong menthol recipes now since it covers the taste of the nic salts. I don't really want to go back to free base, anyone have suggestions?

I never got in on the nic salt trend, but can you explain why you and others dislike freebase? I’ve always enjoyed the hits I get off of freebase nic, all my recipes are tailored for freebase, so maybe salts was never in my interest in the first place.

Nic Salts are much smoother at higher doses and kick in quicker. This makes them great for pod systems. It allows you to still get satisfying hits with less vapor in less powerful devices. I personally have never hated freebase or known any one to who hates freebase. It just works better in some devices so if you use a pod system you probably like nic salts but if you use a mod you probably like freebase better.

I'm thinking why not 50/50? Best of both worlds hopefully.

I only use nic salts when I'm at work or in bars. Even for a long time nicotine user, the salts still deliver a very strong nicotine buzz that I don't get off of freebase. It's quick and stealthy. When I'm not working or in a public place, I go freebase.
I don't know anyone that actually dislikes freebase, just people that prefer the efficiency of nic salts. The problem is finding a pod device that doesn't use overpriced prefilled pods such as juul who charges +$16 for a total of 2.8ml or systems with coils/refillable pods that constantly burn out and need replaced.
So far, if you're interested, I've had the most luck with the Vaporesso Nexus. The coil usually needs replaced after a few days of abuse but I usually find them at around $1.50-$2 each.

Just got a juul and I have no trouble refilling the pods. I think of it as buying a pack of subohm attys and it’s actually cheap. I’ve refilled the same pod ten times so far no issues.

Truth be told I don’t rely on the device, it’s more for stealth or work.

I've heard you can do this and I'm pretty sure I have some empty Juul pods laying around. I'll have to give it a shot now, thank you. I figured you'd only get another use or two out of them so I never bothered. 10 sounds pretty nice.
Happen to know if there are any salt juices out there that are too thick for the pods or happen to know a good suggested VG/PG ratio?

Suorin Air my friend, it's the best salt device I've used, and it fits in your wallet.

Awesome, thank you for the suggestion! I was thinking of grabbing one tomorrow if they're on sale, so I'll probably give it a shot now

Well we've come full circle guys. We went from robopenis (eGo) to robogina (Nexus).

I agree with the other two commenters, I don't mind free base but pod systems are very convenient for me right now so it makes sense

What taste? I've never noticed a difference

4 points

by juice_buyeralmost 7 years ago

It's kind of like wet cardboard

by s_banksalmost 7 years ago

You think "cardboard," but think of a flavorless cereal like wheat or oats... does the flavor resemble that?

3 points

by juice_buyeralmost 7 years ago

A bit yeah. It also reminds me of some "naturally extracted" tobacco flavored juices I tried. Just a very plain faintly earthy taste.

Damn bro now I taste it

I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about because I only vape with Juul so I use nic slats from NUDE, and never tried something other, but my friend ordered also from them but it was vg based and 100mg and mine was pg 48mg and you definitely can tastya difference between the two. His always as an almost acdic kinda taste to his jucies, something like an extreme pineapple flavor maybe if that makes sense. So maybe that's something to consider

I know some people mix freebase and nic salts to get the best of both worlds. Maybe that could help to improve the flavor?

I agree with /u/DVader42 . What I got from nic river is crystal clear and has zero off taste or really any taste at all even at 50mg. Sounds to me more like you got a shitty batch from LNW and now your mind is associating that with all nicotine salt juice.

I don't diy juice, but I recently bought my first bottle of Nic salt juice and I can definitely taste it. It adds this background yuck to what was a standard pina colada type juice at 0mg. I don't know how to describe it, but it's definitely there.

I'm also really sensitive to fake sweeteners in pop, for example, it's all I can taste if I have any diet pop. Maybe it's just a sensitivity thing.

Yeah I can't stand artificial sweeteners either. You can try and salvage the bottle with 1-2% menthol flavor

The pop/soda/soda pop thing? :)

I'm in Ontario, Canada. I remember the first time I was in the states and asked for pop, I confused my poor waitress. In Cape Cod, I think.

I didn't know that was a Canadian thing, too. I'm in Pennsylvania

Thank you! Everyone I say this to looks at me like I just grew another head.

Ever get someone wanting you to prove it? Like a blind taste test?

I'm recently diagnosed diabetic. I honestly can't stand the taste so much that I guess I'm not drinking pop anymore. =/

>Ever get someone wanting you to prove it? Like a blind taste test?

Nobody has gone that far, but I kinda wish they would. It would be very demonstrative for them.

I'm sorry. :( It'll probably happen to me eventually, I drink enough mountain dew to sink an Exxon tanker.

Now wait, if you are used to 0mg, anything with nicotine will taste weird. 0mg anything tastes wrong to me, lacking a certain oomph.

1 points

by MelesseSpiritalmost 7 years ago

Ah. No, I vape 6mg. But the testing juices in the vape shops here have to be Nic free, so they're always at 0mg.

I find the same thing with 0 mg, it's missing the bite. I think that's a big part of why I've stayed at 6mg instead of continuing to step down.

Find a new source for nicotine salt base or store it properly

That was my first thought but unless naked, bombies and quite a few others are all using LNW I don't think the supplier is the problem

I’m yet to jump into diy nic salt, as my freebase stash is good enough for now.

But I’ve tried two different nic salt e liquids from Dr. Salt in my MTL setup (strawberry cream & Red Devil) and they both tasted seriously weird.

It’s almost like a slight medicinal flavour. Not enjoyable at all.

Same here. I get a chemical type taste. Burns the hell out of my nostrils if I exhale through my nose too. I've tried three different brands of commercial salt juice. It's really off putting.

I got some from nicotine river, to me it has less taste of its own than freebase. 6-12 mg on an rda running .6 Clapton

Do you have the smooth salts or the hit salts?

Smooth

I keep hearing great things about Nic River's smooth salts.

Nicsalts are great for pod systems. I used to love them until I upgraded to subohm vaping. Freebase is so much better, and I can’t enjoy puffing on my juul or my Breeze anymore

by Says_Wattalmost 7 years ago

I'm in the process of doing just this, what makes it better and should I buy both nic salt and freebase considering I want to DIY for a pod system and for my subohm systrm

1 points

by shaggieshapiroalmost 7 years ago

I would first try mixing free base at high levels and see how you like it on your pod system. If you don’t like it you can buy nicsalts. I have a Cuban cigar recipe with 6% freebase nic and it gives a heavy throat hit similar to nicsalts. It’s up to you what you do, but I am used to freebase now.

What the difference between the smooth and nonsmooth nicsalts, can I use the smooth in a subohm atomizer?

1 points

by cidghoulalmost 7 years ago

Strange. I'm the complete opposite. I feel the taste is in both but don't notice it nearly as much in salts as I do in freebase.

Get a different brand of nic salts? Not sure what else you’re looking for here? ...;)

I'm hoping it's just the supplier, some other people seem to know what I'm talking about though. I ordered some new salts from nic river.

Hey so was the Nicotine River salts better than the LNW? Any progress with the weird tastes? I just ordered some nic salt concentrate from LNW and I haven't received it yet. I too notice weird tastes in commercial salt juices. But not in juul juice. I love throat hit though. Lots of throat hit. I'm curious if I won't like this LNW juice. Wish they all told you what acids they use and in what poportions.

I have a question. I just got my Smok Infinix today. I have been smoking for over 30 years. I researched the pod systems b4 I bought it and am a total newbie to vaping. I decided, from research, that nic salts was the way to go. I bought SALT OF THE EARTH The Classic flavor (tobacco) My problem: I followed all directions and when I take a hit off it, I cough (hard), so I tried to take softer hits (each time going slow) Anyway I read somewhere that someone mixed regular ejuice with the nic salts and it worked better for them. 1st question: I have a full pod do I have to trash it or can i hold onto it for a week or 2? 2nd : what should I buy to mix with it? And I am thinking half/HALF? HOPE I can find some help. I sooo need to quit smoking. Thank you

Try changing your nic salt. Different companies use different acids to form the salts, and it's likely that you dislike the taste of the acid used in your salts.

I have only tried nicotine benzoate and it does have as light taste profile to it but is very smooth. I have got used to it though....to start with I disliked it compared to freebase at the same concentration.
