A Small Safety Story: It could Happen to you!
submitted almost 7 years ago by FlCaspr

Hello everyone,

Look, we all take risks sometimes; and then some of us are overly cautious. Sometimes we get comfortable with something by doing it enough, or it seems so simple that you have it under control. Well I Kind of do a little both, I risk the biscuits, and I take lots of precautions, And today Im adding a new one to list, Im putting this on here because I know not everyone who mixes wears protective garb. Maybe you wear just the goggles or just the gloves, or maybe neither and your SUPER duper careful. Well, what happened to me, could very easily happen to you if you're only wearing safety glasses and NOT lab style goggles.

I made a mix, pulled out my 100mg nic salts, made sure the cap was snug, and clamped it down between my thumb and forefinger, and began to shake. THE BOTTLE LEAKED FROM THE CAP AND WENT RIGHT IN TO MY EYE. This was extremely shocking and painful for about 5 minutes until i was able to flush it and its still funky feeling. Luckily it was only a drop. But please for the love of your sight, take one more safety step and place your nic bottle into a ziplock bag prior to shaking. this will ensure you are pets or friends don't accidentally get misted, or that you become the Stevie Wonder of DIY.

Have a nice day y'all happy mixing and SAFETY FIRST!

Scary, glad to hear you're ok. Ziploc baggie is solid advice.

Thank you for the concern, and yes of course no matter how careful you are murphys law is always lurking

by skiddlzninjaalmost 7 years agoThat one moderator. You know, the honey guy.

I always shake horizontally for this reason.

Would you be shocked if I told you I was? Lol

I typically shake below chest-ish level and horizontal, whilst clamping the lid tight (yes, I just imitated myself shaking nic.) It was a 100ml nude nic bottle, other than that it was a freak accident. None of my other ones have leaked, but regardless I'll be shaking them bagged from now on

That little demonstration you just did while typing your reply actually helped me understand exactly how you shake your bottles.

Was it really a demonstration, or was he just wanking? I mean, it definitely seemed like he was....

Safety is one of those things that you can't let be a habit, and we're all creatures of habit. I've run into this problem doing titrations for my other hobby. There are 3 chemicals used in a nitrate test. All are caustic, but one is particularly bad news.

I stopped using gloves pretty early on because I'll just be careful. And I am. I'm very careful. With the super dangerous one. The other two mildly dangerous ones just don't get the same level of respect. Like something in my brain just will not dignify them with the respect they are owed, because they're not the super dangerous one.

On the plus side, I'm getting used to chemical burns so I've got that going for me.

>Caustic

Meanwhile I'm over here working on stuff covered in NaOH, ankle deep in the sludge. Or the days you gotta reweld rails, leaning in over several hundred gallons of molten NaOH. Getting burned by hot shit sucks, getting chemical burns sucks, having a seal fail and dump 800F liquid NaOH down your glove makes you wish Jesus was real.

Edit: the backstory is I work in a foundry. Really freakin hot sodium hydroxide is a good way to dissolve ceramic.

I once had both 100mg nic and some flavor on my hand(just messy mixing) my brain said “just lick the flavor off.” I licked the nic instead.

i dipped my finger on the "wet area" of a cap and licked it to know to wich bottle belonged to, twice. both times it was the 100mg nic cap.

(to clarify it was different days)

Always point the nozzle away from you and always pre-squeeze before attempting to smell, so it doesn't shoot in your nose.

Haha yep can confirm.

Thanks for the tip! I've been getting comfortable and careless lately myself. I get into that mode where I'm mixing 10ml, all different recipes -- after a while it's easy for me to slip into lazy behavior.

But you weren't even being lazy and got...anyway, you were there.... glad you and your eye survived. You're right, it probably could have been worse. I probably would have panicked so good on you for keeping your head about it and getting it rinsed immediately.

I do mix in only one room though that my kids and pets don't have access to. Just a vented closet with cheap knob lock.

Eyedrops aren't the best way to consume nicotine, but a drop of 100mg/ml isn't likely to really hurt you. I don't know whether there's anything in there that would damage your eye but I'm inclined to think it's relatively harmless even if it does burn a bit. Doing this with a bottle of FlavorArt Cinnamon concentrate, though, would be absolutely horrible.

Depends. You can absorb a lot through your eyes (lsd droppers anyone?). I'm not sure how sensitive your eyes would be themselves to that much localized nicotine, but some very concentrated could theoretically put more in your blood than you'd think.

If you got a full milliliter in your eye, you could absorb up to 100mg of nicotine. Would that actually harm someone? That'd be like vaping 15ml of 6mg juice, but all at once. I suppose it might make you feel sick.

Depends on your tolerance somewhat I'd imagine. My heart was definitely racing pretty quickly and my body temp shot up to the point I had to strip off my upper-wear, but that could have been because of the panic reaction and not directly from nic absorption. Let's get some rats and do some tests

I can only imagine how bad that would be. I got a 5mg juice in my eye once. It was just a drop but hurt bad. I'm sure adding 95mg more would not make it feel any better.

Same thing happened to me. Flicked off somehow when cleaning labware. So unlikely as to be infinitesimally impossible. Yet there I was with 100mg nic in my eye. Good post, +1

My vape once spit juice unexpectedly (RTA with a narrow drip tip) at me and I got some juice in my eye. I know it‘s nothing that‘ll kill you, but it hurt really bad and I spend 10+ minutes hanging over the sink pouring cold water on my eyeball till the burning got better and I actually wasn’t afraid of the possibility of partially loosing my eye sight.

Thank you for your story, glad you’re okay and I will be more careful when mixing in the future.

I use 30ML PET dropper bottles for my nic that's ready to mix. I get that glass would be ideal but it's a PITA everytime I want to mix. I figured it comes to me in the mail in a plastic bottle, why do I need to put it in a glass one to make juice? I haven't experienced any ill effects with the finshed product. Some gets on the tip or cap but I just wipe it off. I haven't worn gloves or glasses for the couple of years I've been mixing. I'm sure people will say this is horrible advice but it works for me.

🤦🏼‍♀️ for the love of Pete! The way it started I thought u were handling nuclear waste. Protective garb? LOOL Totally not needed. Be cautious and don’t drink it or bathe in it or pour it in your eye but if those are issues then maybe you ought not diy ejuice. Shaking juice and shaking nicotine should be done w two different forces, shaking nicotine the daylights out of nicotine isn’t necessary or as encouraged imo. Just shaken really is needed. Then that crazy spray in the eye thing won’t even happen....;)

Oh how the opinions vary ;)

Many people claim that the nicotine should be shaken the most out of anything, to avoid hotspots.

Sure, maybe it's not exactly nuclear waste, but its painful nonetheless, and if you don't react quickly you could have more problems on your hand.

I realize that 100 mg nicotine is only 10% solution, but again, nonetheless, still painful and shocking. I hope it never happens to you, or God forbid a nearby unsuspecting animal. Just because it won't kill you doesn't mean that it's not unpleasant :) I'm still not using protective garb, the extent of which I meant safety glasses and/or goggles, (not a full hazmat suit like I assume you're imagining), I'm simply putting my nic bottles inside of a ziploc bag to minimize the ability of the bottle leaking from shaking.

Have a wonderful day and mix some damn juice!

How contemptuous are you?
