As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!
Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.
#This week's flavor is... PECAN!!!
How did that get to be the FOTW?
It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).
Past FOTW posts can be found here
The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Please note there's three weeks worth of tobacco there by request but I'm not sure how to divide them up. Don't want to just do the same Aromatic, NonAromatic, Tobacco Additives as last time. Any suggestions?
The week after that will be: Eggnog
The week after that will be: Hard Candy

Maybe add FLV Pralines, CAP Pralines & Cream, and FW Pralines and Cream. Pralines don't by definition have to have pecans, but most people associate them with pecans.
I'll be single flavor testing FW Butter pecan and WF Roasted Pecans and Cream, I'm assuming this place will soon be lit with holiday recipes so I'm gonna try to contribute in some way shape or form.
One of my first flavors I ever got was TFA Pecan. I mixed it up at like 8% with FA Cookie. I can still remember what that tasted like lol. It was horrible and tasted like chemicals. I took one little drag and dumped it out subsequently. It was such a bad experience, I haven't touched it since.
I did the same thing with it as a single flavor at 7%. Oh my goodness. Way too strong and very bad. I don't think it's for me as a single flavor, but if I was trying it again I'd try at 1%.
I think this flavor would work very well with "chocolate" flavors. I could see it making up for parts of the deficits in the chocolate flavors we have, rounding it out/sweetening it up.
I finally scored me some FW Butter Pecan but I forgot what recipe it was for. Any recommendations for that one?
As far as the 3 tobacco weeks, how about 1 week just for Chinese tobaccos? I'm probably in the minority here but I really prefer Hangsen and SC/FE tobaccos over FLV, INW, FA, etc. Just throwing an idea out there.
Like American - TFA/CAP/FW/FLV
European - INW/FA
Chinese - HS/SC/FA
?
So where does reka tobaccos fall there? And add SA to the euro tobacco. And 'merkin tobacco will be all FLV, since so few of the others are worthy.
Could go with place in the recipe... Certain tobacco are more suited to main note (,black for pipe, red Burley. Etc.) Some are accent-only (classic cigarette, etc.) And then there's the non-tobaccos that mix well with tobaccos. Like spices, coffee, cocoa, RY4, certain fruits, florals, cactus...
The forgotten FW Butter Pecan recipe could be County Fair by Silky, or if a little older, Cookie Crack by pgll55. Both were posted here but they have different reddit names and I can't recall either. Not tried County Fair yet but can vouch for the CC being as described!
Oh man - that Cookie Crack looks amazing! Looks like I'm getting more concentrates for Black Friday. :) I'm also missing 2 more FW concentrates for the Bust-A-Nut so I'll pick those up as well. I'll skip Country Fair for now because I've never liked any recipe with TPA Toasted Marshmallow in it.
FW butter pecan is the shit. Rich, creamy, and a dream come true with a little LB Vanilla Ice Cream or FW Graham Cracker. It has it's place with bright tobaccos as well like TFA western and some others. This is also the perfect filling for a Pecan Pie. AP at 0.15% to 0.25% can add a little depth to the nuttiness and ehance the overall mix.
Tl;dr this is the pecan to try if you haven't IMO.
Edit: also I've found a 10-12 day steep is beneficial to wane any chemical notes and let the flavor really development fresh mixed the flavor seems very thin and off.
This is a pun for the ages. Is that three weeks of tobaccos for real? Please say yes.
> This is a pun for the ages.
Don't encourage him.
They're for real, but I haven't figured out how to split them up yet. Any thoughts?
Tobaccos are a deep hole. Too many people here know all about the real stuff more than I do. I still don’t know the difference between a cavendish and an oriental and a Turkish and a...
So I would probably take the lamer approach and go by company out of a lack of imagination. I watched the three episodes prior and you guys covered some good ground there and still barely scratched the surface. was it aromatics, nonaromatics, and additives. I have maybe 30-40 flavors and they’re very different and a ton of lousy ones. Only later did I realize that some were pipes, cigars, blends, etc.
My instinct says to ask for recommendations on better flavors and sort by company or type depending on overlap. Otherwise you’re going to be vaping loads of lame flavors which really is fun to watch but not as useful in the long run.
But definitely let me know if there’s something I have you want mixed up so you don’t have to buy it. Lemme think on this.
Edit: just saw your edit. You’ll get better advice I think from some the experts.
> This is a pun for the ages. Is that three weeks of tobaccos for real? Please say yes.
I guess you could just do like you did last time but it got kind of convoluted that way IMO.
You could do like Synths, NETs, and hybrids or something. I'll think about it and post later.
> how to split them up yet. Any thoughts
Thinking about it a bit more - since it's all about the flavor, they should be divided that way. There's more than 3 categories, so combine two or more . . .
-
Fruity & Nutty
-
Spicy & Sweet
-
Dirty & Boozy
I like this one, not that anyone cares what I like 😂😩...;). I only just remembered how much I always loved the smell of the tobacco shop in the mall when when I was a kid and when I think of it like that and not like a cigarette makes it very appealing and I’m genuinely excited to get started on tobaccos. But, I’m w dog and have no idea the difference between all the different kinds and this kind of division is how I’d prefer...
I feel so bad for Emily during those weeks. Can we add an extra week of bacco and get Concrete, Fear, and CBV as special guests during tobacco month too? Think about it. It will be glorious.
I think not liking something makes for a good reviewer. You can see a flavor from a different perspective. Plus for once it’ll be someone other than u/ID10-T with the gagging extremes for science commentary. And then there’s the creamy baked goodness potential she can make afterwards. One can dream...
As the winter holidays approach, I’d like to request your best eggnogs.
added
Does it have to be just eggnog or could we have a fall/winter general? There are tons of unique holiday and fall/winter flavors.
In regards to the Tobaccos, maybe break it down by experience/skill level. I think all of these FOTW should be that way:
Week 1. Intro to mixing <flavor profile>
Week 2. Enhancing <flavor profile>
Week 3: Expert Dissertation of <flavor profile>
Label it however. These are just suggestions.
Each of those groups could benefit from having such a broad subject as Tobacco catered to their specific level of experience. Maybe I'm just speaking for myself lol. I could go into more detail if you want.
EDIT: Deleted spam. Reworded. And now formatting... ::sigh::
I'd love to see the tobaccos grouped by house/company. Divvy up the companies into the 3 weeks alphabetically or something? I think it'd be cool to consider them them way. I'm inexperienced in this profile and it can seem so overwhelming.
It certainly can be overwhelming.
I think we'll do it like this:
American - TFA/CAP/FW/FLV/LB/STIX MIXX
European - INW/FA/SA/JF
Asian - HS/SC/FA/REKA
Honestly I think the by company will give you a more interesting range because you’ll be able to compare between types and categories when testing. And you can see where different flavors might play nicely together. Whereas going by type you’ll just be looking to see who does one ‘better’ the other which isn’t always the point of tasting every flavor. Plus you’ll naturally run into lines like when you go inw or stixx. Actually I’m surprised you didn’t put the Ta line with the mixx line in the same show. Was that a numbers game?
Oh and it’s Thursday FYI.
