As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!
Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.
#This week's flavor is... BUTTERSCOTCH!!!
How did that get to be the FOTW?
It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

FW Butterscotch Ripple, change my mind?
I picked this up with my last order. Looking forward to using it
FA Butterscotch
FA Butterscotch is a good general dark sweetness but it doesn't have that "butter"scotch flavor I'm looking for when I want that to be the main note. Otherwise its a great additive. And I think it is what Dave uses as honey in his honeybun recipe from a couple of years back which is delicious.
When mixed with a cinnamon bakery it tastes a lot like honey bun "honey." Of note, Little Debbie Honey Buns contain ZERO honey. But it tastes like the sticky sweet stuff that's all over honey buns.
I think this is what Coil Glaze "Honey Bunz" used, too. Remember when that recipe used to be popular?
Depends on what you’re going for. I like ripple in creamy stuff and FA butterscotch in pretty much everything else

Why don’t we get recipes like we used to in our fow posts? I realize all those are up there but the ones everyone posted all week like before... since this new formatting it’s not the same and while that info is invaluable and much appreciated and obviously an improvement, I liked it better when I there were a lot of recipes posted not linked and there were discussions.. what happened to the discussions? Maybe, if the recipes were linked and all that info was listed at the end of the week instead it could be the best of both worlds? Anyone else understand what I’m saying and agree or disagree?
For now, my go to butterscotch "base" is stolen from Cheeba Steeba. It is flv butterscotch mixed with fw butterscotch ripple. That may change as I am not testing every butterscotch flavor that I own, but for now that combo gives me a good full rounded butterscotch flavor.
I thought your review for WF Butterscotch Cream Pie was highly encouraging. Just wondering how you find it compares to Cheeba's base, or what stops it from being your go to butterscotch. I'll be placing an order tomorrow, and was considering getting it, both for greater participation in this thread, and also my general purpose 'decadent soft-crack' needs... Is it worth getting if u already have Butterscotch Ripple?
My ADV is a simple recipe:
FLV Smoked Butterscotch 2.5% with 1% Fresh Cream. Good as a SNV and gains character and depth with steeping.
What does ADV stand for?
All day vape. Something you don’t get sick of easily
To elaborate on this, when crafting a good ADV, as opposed to an after-dinner vape, or one used primarily to be paired with alcohol/or; keep a few things in mind:
-
How does it affect Coil Life? You're going to vape this bottle till it's empty. You don't want have to constantly change cotton or have the flavor masked by gunk build up
-
Do the flavors fatigue quickly? (Sours, delicate menthols, and other additive heavy Vapes). You want the flavor to remain consistently good while vaping, through out the life of your bottle. Something that can't "over steep."
-
Do you like it (duh).
Ok, I'm posting this here to try and bring it to the attention of some of the DIY gurus, (like u/ID10-T and u/enyawreklaw ) - because I've found a hidden gem that could be a game changer for butterscotch/caramel/toffee recipes, but I think the only way it's going to get used in recipes is if one of the prominent community members mentions it or releases a recipe which uses it.
It's not strictly a butterscotch (at least it's not named butterscotch), but I think we can all agree that the difference between caramel and butterscotch is fuzzy and poorly defined. Personally, I doubt I could reliably tell a butterscotch flavour from a caramel in a blind taste test. The whole combined area of 'dark cooked sugar' flavors seems to be poorly represented in the concentrates market, and most of the various flavors are imperfect in one way or another, like dryness, astringency, burnt sugar/chemical off-notes, coil gore/sugar content, and just general inaccuracy to profile.
After trying loads of the usual suspects I almost gave up trying to find a gooey, rich, melted caramel, like the stuff inside chocolate bars, or a decadent butterscotch like you put on an ice cream sundae. That's what I think of when I imagine butterscotch or caramel, that's what I want in a vape, and from my experience and research, that's what seems to be largely lacking from most of the concentrates on the market.
My prayers were finally answered from an unlikely source - Solub Arome Caramel. This is an absolutely fantastic flavour, which I can't praise highly enough. It's rich, decadent, melted caramel. No burnt sugar, maple, or other off-notes. Sweet but not candy sweet. Velvety mouth feel. No coil gore. It really does taste like actual melted caramel/butterscotch sauce, akin to the varieties I describe above. I tried a side by side taste test with Butterscotch Ripple, and imo it's far superior. I bought mine from Rainbow Vapes, and even better, it's only £1.15/10ml. It's amazing to me that it's not better known, and a little bizarre that a lesser known company can do a flavour so well, when the market leading versions are so lacklustre.
(I swear I'm not schilling for anyone, and to prove it I'll just say, don't bother with SA Custard, Creme Brulee, or Biscuit, they all suck).
TL/DR - SOLUB AROME CARAMEL IS BETTER & MORE REALISTIC TO BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE THAN BUTTERSCOTCH RIPPLE (plus all the other butterscotch/caramels by TFA/CAP/FA/FLV/FW).
What is the throat hit like? I was looking for a nice caramel too, but gave up and turned to butterscotch. FW Butterscotch is ok, but I prefer Butterscotch Cream Pie (Wonder Flavors).
Just started mixing but this is one of my favorites
Butterscotch Ripple - FW 4.0%
Caramel - FA 1.0%
Banana Cream - TFA 2.0%
DX Barvarian Cream - TFA 3.00%
Butterscotch (Natural) - FW 2.0%
Vanilla Custard - FW 1.0%
You bring up a good point. It is often a good idea to "boost" your butterscotch with a caramel. Side note, how does fw butterscotch natural compare with just fw butterscotch?
Butterscotch Cream Pie (Wonder Flavors) - smooth (any TH above 2/10 I find too harsh) and sweet (butterscotch must be sweet, right?).
Vaping the following at the moment:
Butter Cream (CAP) 1% Butter Pecan (FW) 2% Butterscotch Cream Pie (WF) 4% Vanilla Pudding (Flavorah) 0.5%
I tried Apple-Bacco. I modified it a bit based on my own tastes. took the butterscotch ripple down to two. bumped up the capV1 to 4. I tried some different combos of tobaccos with that to varying success. nothing was quite right outside of that BSR coming down. it's too strong for me at 6%.
