Kiwi go again: The fuzzy Fruit returns as Flavor of the Week
submitted almost 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is... KIWI!!!

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Next week's flavor will be: Butterscotch

The week after that will be: Nougat

The week after that will be: White Chocolate

The week after that will be: Chocolate

The week after that will be: Pecan

The week after that will be: Florals

The week after that will be: Ice Cream

The week after that will be: Herbs

The week after that will be: Tropical Punch/Tropical Blends

The week after that will be: Mixed/Weird Berries

The week after that will be: Root Beer

The week after that will be: Blueberry

The week after that will be: Savory

The week after that will be: Tea

The week after that will be: Yogurt

The week after that will be: Chocolate Cookies (Chocolate Chip, Oreo, Thin Mint)

The week after that will be: Oatmeal/Granola

The week after that will be Coffee

So.... I don't think I've ever gone down on a chick from NZ, so not sure what a Kiwi should taste like. Maybe there's some experts on the subject here?

You should try eating one if you haven't. They are juicy, soft, flavorful and a treat you will remember. Yeah, Sara was really something...

I like Fa for a tart more realistic kiwi and Fw for a candy kiwi. Kiwi double is the only other one I have and the other 2 are much better so I never use it.

3 points

by ID10-Talmost 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Yeah it's neither full candy like FW nor full realistic like FA, and it's a little grassy, so it sits unused here too.

2 points

by St1llFrankalmost 7 years ago

Same. I like the texture of FW Kiwi too. It gives that jammy/jelly candy kind of feel in my mouth.

by Flanker6or7almost 7 years agoMixologist

I've been using Kiwi Double where I needed candy and FA Kiwi where I wanted juicy realism.

If I swap to FW Kiwi, should I use it as 1:1? I'll have to test it myself regardless but as a starting point I am curious!

by Bassmuttalmost 7 years ago

Yeah , I think so , I use it around 3 or 4% , 3% Fa Forest Fruit and 4% Fw Kiwi is pretty Awsome.

KILLER KIWI:

FA Kiwi 3% this brings a fresh kiwi to the party that will stand up well with the other concentrates in this mix

TFA Kiwi double: 2% Up that kiwi hit and add a bit of juiciness to the mix, this will make the kiwi taste more realistic

FA Cream Fresh: 3% Cream dis boy up and work out some of the dryness in FA kiwi

TFA Dragonfruit: 1% this adds serious juiciness to the mix again helping the kiwi flavour taste more realistic

CAP Super Sweet: 0.5% Kiwi is a sweet fruit, this is optional but it will elevate your flavour and make the mix really pop on those coils

some additions you can add to this juice for a bit of variation:

TFA Strawberry ripe 3%

CAP Strawberry Sweet 1%

Strawberry and kiwi love each other, the strawberries also get the same benefits from TFA dragonfruit and FA cream fresh as the kiwis do

CAP Golden pineapple 3%

FLV Mango .75%

CAP Hibiscus 1%

Pineapple, mango, kiwi and dragonfruit make great friends as well, if you're a big fan of tropical juices this will be right up your alley

INW Grape 1%

FA Grape Concord 2%

CAP Hibiscus 1%

The floral aspect of FA grape concord and CAP Hibiscus and the intense grape flavour of INW grape stands out from the juicy kiwi in the mix, this tastes a lot more candied but is still a nice mix

Nice! I really like the look of that Pineapple/Mango/Hibiscus addition

I find hibiscus really helps add a generic sorta tropical flavour, great blending tool

I'm highly allergic to kiwi so I avoid everything that has the name on it, even if its artificial flavoring (who knows, right). I once was gifted a juice with a flavor im allergic to (nuts) and the manufacturer specifically told me to avoid it.

Has anyone with the same allergy ever dared to try it?

1 points

by deleis1985almost 7 years ago

I have an allergy to a protein in oranges, and avoid them at all costs even in vape form. If I remember correctly it also appears in muskmelon so I steer clear of that too. Epipens are too expensive so, better safe than sorry!

by Up2myheadalmost 7 years ago

I'm mildly allergic, it's not life threatening or anything.

IIRC correctly it's an enzymatic allergy, and I don't believe those enzymes are present in the flavorings we use. Plus, heat denatures those enzymes.

I've had some juices with kiwi to no ill effect, but YMMV

No “kiwi go again on my own/ goin down the only road I’ve ever known” or does that date me?

One of the very first mixes I tried from atf was coop’s kiwi cheesecake. I wasn’t a big fan then but it did open my eyes to how few flavors could be used to make a profile. I may have to revisit and try the bourbon version this time. I’m finding that bakeries may not exactly be my thing so maybe some more fruit mixes with it.

Excited for this one as I’ve just got a bottle of FW Kiwi in today. I’ve been using FA and TFA for awhile now. I like them all!

I find Kiwi is nice with strawberry and watermelon. Surprisingly mango too, as I have found out recently but only go in lightly with the kiwi.

VT Kiwi is really tasty. I've been using it around 4-5%. Seems to be a middle of the road candy/realistic, as most vt fruit flavors are.

FW Kiwi -3%

FA Pear -3%

FA Fuji -0.5%

FA Red Summer -2%

FLV Jackfruit -0.5%

Your choice of sweetener.. I'd put 0.5% sugar daddy

Still working on getting my ratios right and what vg/pg ratio works best but FA Kiwi + FA Fuji is damn tasty. Initial tart kiwi bite with a juicy apple finish.

Think my last attempt was:

2% FA Kiwi

3% FA Fuji

65/35 vg/pg. Needs 1-2 days to steep for flavor to blend.

I also attempted a Green Apple Kiwi version which is OK:

10.5% Express Apple Orchard

1% FA Kiwi

0.5% FA Fuji

0.2% TFA Sour

60/40 vg/pg and a day or two steeping for flavors to blend. Comes out more juicy-sweet than tart than I'd like. But not bad either.

Think I'll work on a Kiwi+Strawberry mix next with TFA Ripe Strawberry and FA Red Touch. Any advice or constructive criticism would be appreciated =]

FA Kiwi and FA Red Touch taste great together but will need something to make them juicy and less dry. I’d try FA Pear or a TINY amount of INW cactus fro that

2 points

by darksun773almost 7 years ago

I could see the pear doing that but what does the cactus do and how little is a tiny amount?

3 points

by juthincalmost 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

.1 or .2% INW cactus adds wetness

2 points

by ID10-Talmost 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Makes it wet and juicy. Less than 0.25% though, you don’t want it to taste of cactus.

Curious. I've a 10ml of Cap Kiwi that's been sitting unopened since I bought it a few months ago. Don't really see many recipes that call for it and not sure what to do with it. If anyone has suggestions, I'm more than willing to use it, just haven't really thought about it since it went in the box of flavors.

Use it to fill in a pear or green apple? That stuff doesn’t even taste like kiwi at all

2 points

by blackdesertnewbalmost 7 years ago

fair enough. I'll keep it in mind for a few testers. Thanks!
