How can you tell apart nic from salt nic?
submitted about 7 years ago by theo-lensky

Hey there!

So for the first time ever in my country a company started making salt nic. It's 20 mg of salt nic in a 10ml bottle. I decided to buy 5 and use them for mixing.

Usually I have about 1-2 mg of nicotine in my eliquid without finding it harsh.

So with salt nic i added like 3-4 mg because I've heard you get a much smoother throat hit from it

However it wasn't smooth at all. It was just like regular nicotine and it was harsh since I'm not used to 4.5 mg of nicotine

My assumption is that I've been sold normal nicotine branded as salt. How can I check that? Is there any way I can test the nicotine bottles I've been given? Am I in the wrong here?

Some love it some hate it, but I can definitely tell them apart (especially first vape of the day).

With salt nic it hits so much quicker and stronger (like a cigarette), but normal nic can take a few minutes to slowly relieve the craving.

This. I vape 1,5mg, first vape of the day actually feels like a morning cig to me now.

I just started using 12mg salt nic in my subohm tank.

Rigth now I am wondering what the whole fuss is about?

i tried it out as flavourless and to me it is like switching from normal milk to soya milk.

Could be brand, but it's night v day for me. I couldn't drop the smokes until I bought salt nics. I couldn't handle much more than 8 with regular nic but have almost no harshness off 12 with the salts. Just my experience, not judgemental.

i do not know, I went from 12 to 6 to 3mg and now back to 12mg because i was chainvaping and dealing with vaper tongue all the time. I have no problem with nic lvs.

What is strange is that less then a year everybody was chasing the perfect throat hit...and now nobody wants it.

The beauty of vaping is that you can find what exactly suits you ..whatever works for you.

Yep, I'm only 3 weeks smoke free, been trying to switch for over a year. It's just what works for me, and kinda realized that's how it is for everyone. Pod system, sub ohm, nic, salt nic whatever works for you.

That's a really nice way to put it :D

I also don't quite understand the difference so far. It's just my first day tho so maybe my opinion will change.
After all, I do vape low nic so I bet the difference wont be as noticeable. I just want something that doesnt like, make me choke as much when I got higher than 3 mg. Salt nicotine sounded like an answer to my prayer but so far It is either not working or I just got sold regular nicotine branded as salt.

rigth now some of my juices are steeping...so wait and see.

Eventually you will find what need....and when you do...something else will come out in tye vaping world and back to square one.

Everytime..I chocked or started coughing...it always had more to do with the mod...coils..not with the strength of nic.

You aren’t supposed to use any salt nic in a sub ohm tank

Depends on potency and power used, really. Low mg nic salt at 75+ watts isn't really an issue.

Yep. Nic is nic, as far as that goes. Salts - especially the "smooth" formulations - can be big-time deceiving. Hitting 24mg freebase in a DL setup will hurt, so the OD potential is very low. Hitting 24mg salt nic is quite do-able in the same setup, and the OD potential is very high. People who usually use 3mg freebase and try 50mg salts in their usual setup because it's there and because they can are just asking for trouble.

They sell kits at Nicotine River to test..I don’t know about your country this is in the US...I think if you look up what’s in the kit there’s a way to do it yourself maybe utube it...sorry but that’s the best I’ve got...;)

Do you have a PH test kit?

Test the PH of your FB nicotine and the PH of your new salt base nicotine, they should vary greatly.

Freebase will be near 8.4 ph and salt will be about 6.0 PH, however salt PH may vary if it is HIT, or SMOOTH.

For the same reason you cannot do a titration test to check the potency of your salt based e-liquid.

Simple. Do a pH test on them. Freebase nic is a base, nic salts are acidic/neutral.
