A question about nicotine
submitted about 7 years ago by dillycrawdaddy

Hello. How are you?

So I just mixed up my very first DIY juice and I’m thrilled at how easy it was! Prickly victory by u/hashslingingslashur. Tastes great right after the mix, but it is very slightly sharp and a little harsh on the throat. I’ll give it some steep time, but my question is about nicotine.

I ordered Purenic 100mg from nic river. After only a few pulls I get a pretty strong throaty chesty feeling that I have never gotten from commercial juices. I also get a little “nic buzz” head rush, that I’m not really after. Is this brand well regarded? Is it the nicotine? Or the other ingredients? (Flavors, VG/PG?) I ordered all of them from nic river and shook them all well before mixing.

Mixed at 70vg, 3mg nic. Using a wasp nano with an avs quad clapton 30/40 at .31ohm at around 38watts. If it helps, my go to commercial juice is dinner lady lemon tart at 3mg and it doesn’t affect me this way.

If this nicotine is known to be lesser quality please let me know what brand I should replace it with, but it seems that nic River is well regarded here. Is it all in my head?

Thanks for reading and any possible insights you might have.

It just sounds like the nic is working as intended, it's probably just fresher than the previous store-bought juices. You can either vape a bit less (to not get the headspin), or lower the nic to 2-2.5mg.

Thanks. I suspected this could be as well. I might mix another batch at 2mg just to compare. Could it also be because the mix is so fresh? Maybe it’ll mellow out with steeping? This is my first experience with freshy fresh juice like this.

Your new fresh juice probably also has a lot less Ethyl Maltol (EM) and sweeteners and things that would dull everything down a bit. You're now getting a more direct/raw/energised/lively/bright vape! ^(OK so energised) ^(might) ^(be stretching it.)

Well I certainly do like how bright the flavor is! Not to bother you, but what is ethyl maltol? I should just google it...

Thanks for your help.

I'd say it's either a bit stronger than the advertised 100 mg/ml, you measured wrong or just vape a bit too much while testing without realizing it. Is it salt or freebase?

I see no reason to replace it, just dial it down a bit as suggested. Bad nic would be harsh on the throat, smelly and discolored.

It is freebase, PG base. I think I’ll dial the strength back. I mixed by weight and was accurate to what the calculator was telling me. Used the online calculator at ELR.

Sounds like a plan. The chesty feeling is from too much nic. You can usually gauge it by the throat hit, but you get tricked when the nic is smoother than you're used to. You'll adapt quickly.

Just a possibility . . . is the nic you ordered PG or VG based? I believe the "default" selection when ordering at NicRiver is VG - and if you didn't change it, you may have VG based nic. If that's the case, you need to shake the hell out of it to make sure it's evenly mixed. You might have simply hit a hotspot from unevenly mixed nic.

Agreed. When I mix I usually put in nic, pg, and flavor. Then I shake that really well as I use vg based nic. The pg is sometimes needed to hit an 85/15 vg pg ratio as that is what I prefer after MUCH experimenting. Anyways, then add your vg. I then put the bottle in warm water for a few minutes to thin the vg out. It’s then very easy to shake. I bought a used vortex mixer on eBay for $25 that really saves my arm.

By the way I use nude nic salts. Have been for over a year. I’ll never go back to freebase nic.

Thanks for this comment. I think I’m headed toward nic salts and this is good advice on procedure. I think I will move toward more vg heavy mixes as I suspect the pg is harshing me out as well. I ordered some chemnovatic freebase (pg) and some nicriver smooth salts (vg) to replace this purenic freebase. I can’t vape it.

Yeah switching to salts was the answer to eliminating harshness for me. Before that I was mixing 95% veg juices and still getting harshness. The other nice thing about salts vs freebase is salts are stable so they don’t react (steep) very much when you mix them. This makes flavors stay more constant after mixing and drastically cuts steep time from several weeks to several days. This is just my opinion based on my experience. But I’ve been mixing for over two years, I’ve made over 200 unique recipes and have used in the range of 50 liters of vg. The first year I experimented using every method out there to cut the harshness. Switching to salts was THE answer.

I mix for myself and three other friends. I only charge cost as I’m not interested in really selling. At $4 a 30 ml bottle I can vape for free and afford to make any flavor I want. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me.

By the way stay away from elr. It’s worth a couple bucks to use recipes from alltheflavors. That was the other BIG revelation when I was first starting out. ATF is much pickier about what they allow on their site.

It is PG but thanks for the suggestion. I shook the hell out of it anyway:)

Ive used Carolina extracts for a while now after being let down by a handful of companies, they're consistently good for me. What made me make the switch to CXTR was a few bad, yellow, smelly bottles of 100mg from NicRiv. This was before they aquired the other nicotine companies they have now though. I have nothing against them as i still order flavorings, and pg/vg from them, but the nic was off. Im ordering some of their nic salts to try soon, hopefully i dont get the same results. If youve got the extra money maybe try CXTR next time for regular nicotine, clear as water, smells like nothin, clean.

The other repliers could be right that you're nic is perfectly fine though, and you're adjusting. How does the purnic look/smell?

Looks clear, and doesn’t have any discernible odor.

Did you make sure to shake the hell out of the bottle to really get the nicotine mixed in? If you don't do this every time before you mix with it you could be getting more or less nicotine then intended as it settles.

Yep! Thanks for the suggestion and reminder though.

purnic is not well regarded. I dont personally know if its any good, but the reviews on the product page are from nicselect. they just carried all those reviews over when they made the switch. I would recomend cnt or carolina extracts.
