Weekly Questions/Discussion Thread - Week of September 17, 2018
submitted about 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page. If you’re a New Mixer check out the DIY Beginners Guide and the links below then feel free to ask about anything you’re still not clear on.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights from last week:

/u/PerennialPhilosopher informed us of what a nice guy /u/queuetue is, letting a bunch of Alltheflavors pro subscribers freeload for quite some time before putting you all on notice to pay up. In the same post he also announced his intentions to taper off the nic and retire from the DIY game, which is a bummer considering his contributions from recipes like Philosopher’s Milk and Fapple to the many, many flavors reviews he wrote (26 last I counted) he’s definitely been one of the people who keep this place awesome.

Speaking of awesome, /u/AlfredPudding shared some excellent development notes in his latest recipe post for Xinxian breaking down the process from inception to completion.

/u/PepperMyJabrill gave us a thorough flavor review for Health Cabin’s Kerson, a fruit I’ve never heard of but suddenly know a lot about.

/u/LandingMonkey asked about how to reach the ineffable next level of DIY, where your creations satisfy your longing for perfection… or something along those lines.

And last but not least, the Throwback Thursday contest for a Simple DIY Example and Price Breakdown ended with the winner of winners being /u/LecherousLumberjack who is now sporting the flair “I put on women’s clothing and hang around in bars” so, ya know, buy them a beer if you see them (are my pronouns okay?)

Oh, and while you’re reading this; I noticed a bunch of you reported the Chinese spam, which is really interesting because I had no idea ya’ll actually knew how to use the report button. I’ll be stewing in that knowledge the next time I see an unreported shitty shitpost hanging out on the front page.

I have a story about the Throwback Thursday contest. It made a couple of people I told it to say, "I don't believe in coincidences." For the record, I do believe in coincidences. I think that people who tend to disbelieve in coincidence are failing to understand how normal statistical processes apply to actual life events. I think they're irrational, silly people who just can't seem to wrap their minds around the idea that improbability does not mean impossibility. You know the type. They're superstitious and everything that seems the slightest bit unlikely is some sort of minor miracle.

Anyway, on to the story. I have created a one-shot that's for sale at Wizard Labs, which is physically located in Florida. I get a generous portion of the profit from that in the form of a monthly royalty check, but even a generous portion is generally a small amount. We're talking a little less than half of a tank of gas (and gas is pretty cheap here in north Texas compared to what it costs to fill up in other parts of the USA, and I drive a small car with a small tank). This has been the case for more than a year now.

One of the prizes I offered for that contest was a $20 donation to a charity of winner's choice in their honor. I won't violate their privacy by saying exactly which one, but /u/LecherousLumberjack chose a Florida-based charity. So Saturday morning, I gave $20 to a charity in Florida from the computer at my office. When I went home for lunch and to let the dogs out, I checked the mail. In it was my monthly check from Wizard Labs. And that check was about $20 more than I expected it to be. For that to happen, random folks had to suddenly purchase more than twice as much of that dumb lime candy one-shot as they've purchased in previous months. Weird, right?

My gas light came on this morning. As I'm filling the tank all the way up this afternoon, I'll probably still be trying to figure out whether my position against disbelief in coincidences remains just as firm as it was when I woke up Saturday morning. In the moment of opening that envelope, it felt like the universe was winking at me. Then I felt immediately embarrassed that my commitment to rational thought could be so easily shaken, almost too embarrassed to be happy about my teensy little windfall.

TLDR; Rambling, meaningless nonsense.

Wait do I owe you $20 or donate directly to the charity?

I thought you said you were chipping in $10, not $20, and just assumed it was just going directly to /u/LecherousLumberjack as an addition to the other prizes.

Oh jeez yeah 10 and I was chipping into wherever your pot was going. So charity it is.

I’m with you on the commitment to rationality. It’s completely rational to appreciate the infinitesimal odds of that happening, and to consider it a universe handshake for being a generally good human.

I don’t believe in universe handshakes!

At least, I don’t think I do

Ooh, can there be a 'shitty shitpost' thread flair that we can suggest using? I mean, the creative one-off flairs are kinda cool too, but...

If enough people report a post as a Shitty Shitpost I will happily flair it as that.

Any chance of making 'shitty shitpost' one of the report options, so people don't need to know to put it in as breaking rules - other?

Got an odd question. Been mixing about a month now using chemnovatic 100mg. During use it's very smooth. However when left for a bit shit turns to razor blades. After a squonk or 2 and all liquid is supplanted with fresh from the bottle all goes back to normal. Not sure what's happening. Seems odd that it would go that quickly. Bit frustrating as when at home I switch around a lot. Have confirmed its the nicotine by trying same mixes without it.

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Apparently, the residual heat of the coil can be sufficient to initiate oxidization of the nicotine in the wick. And, as oxidization is made most likely by the nearby presence of another oxide (notice how rust spots grow wildly, while new rust spots take longer to form)...

by sadistic_tendenciesabout 7 years ago

makes sense just odd. never had this happen before on any vendor liquid even leaving stuff for days at a time. this is only leaving for it like 2 hours.

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Massive amounts of sucralose may protect the nicotine from oxidization?

1 points

by thelateoctoberabout 7 years ago

That's exactly what happens to mine. I use some pretty beefy coils that hold quite a bit of heat. As far as I can tell, the residual heat is enough to oxidize the nic in the cotton pretty quickly. I usually start noticing it after an hour or so. But... I've started to really like that first really peppery drag.

Did you get it from NicRiver or VapersTek? There shouldn’t be a difference but I haven’t gotten around to taking the Chemnovatic I got from NR out of the freezer in order to compare them. I’ve been getting it from VT for years, though, and never experienced anything like that.

I was doing some cleaning and throwing away a bunch of really old mixes / commercial juice and I found an old bottle of Bombies Cold Press. I forgot how much I love that shit. 95% of what I mix and vape is tobacco... I throw a little watermelon Crack in the mix every once in a while, but this rediscovery has me really wanting to dive into citrus land. So far my list is as follows:

TFA Orange Mandarin

FLV Pink Guava

INW White Grapefruit

FW Ruby Red Grapefruit

FA Citrus Mix

CAP Grapefruit

CAP Sweet Tangerine

FW Blood Orange

FW Lemonade

And FA Jasmine to mix Terrorhawk (without the vanilla cause that shits gross)

Based on reviews these all sound like what I'm looking for, but are there others I'll find myself needing, either as main notes or to help fill out others? I've got quite a few other fruits already for stuff I mix for friends.

LA lemonade

INW lemon mix

FA Lime tahity

Thanks dude, I'll add lemon mix to the list. I've already got the others. Any advice on some floral stuff that might be good to have? I've got Honeysuckle, hibiscus, and jasmine, but can always add to those too.

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Elderflower.

INW Raspberry Malina (it's more a floral flavor than a berry)

INW Rose

TFA Musk Candy/Rose Candy... can be useful, but... challenging to work with.

INW Shisha Lemon is the bees knees. It’s like FA Lemon Sicily but with more body and a greater sugary sweetness. In terms of it working in both fruit and bakery mixes, it’s been my most versatile lemon hands down.

I will add it to the list, thanks!

how to sub inw biscuit @ 0.5?

have cap sugar cookie and tfa graham cracker clear

1 points

by ID10-Tabout 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Neither of those are a great sub for INW Biscuit but if you're determined or forced to use one or the other, which one will work best depends on the recipe.

making a dinner lady lemon tart clone recipe - dont care about how close it is to the original more about making the cookie base fit the flavor profile. but thanks for the info, i will experiment

Ok I did a reddit search of the sub here n didnt find an answer. Basically what I want to do is dilute some of my flavors down so when I am using extremely small percentages I can accurately measure it out in my syringes.

U/juthinc was kind enough to give me a recipe to try and I found this problem when I was trying to make a 10 ml tester of it, and I have another recipe I'm working on where it's looking like I need to go way down on percentages too. So I'd like an easy way to measure it so I dont have to spend 2 hrs making 5 test batches. Thanks for the help guys

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

Use a scale. Flavors should only be diluted to 10% if they are very strong

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

In his defense... making a 10ml sample of something even with a scale can be tricky.

Especially a recipe including FLV Rich Cinnamon, which the recipe he's talking about had in it. (I tend to just make 30ml testers, to overcome this.)

Hence the 10% dilution there mate

If you were using a scale - this would be much easier. Mixing by volume is better suited to large batches.

Any concentration above .05% can be most accurately measured using a scale. Below .05%, add 1g of flavoring to 9ml of PG (don't have the weight memorized) and mark it as a 10% solution. Then use it as a flavor at ten times the percentage that the base flavor is used in the recipe.
