Throwback Thursday: And the Winner Is...
submitted about 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

This is part of project I agreed to take on after it was pointed out that so many of the resources in sidebar and wiki are ancient. The idea is, rather than revising them myself, I'd post them here once per week to gather feedback on how to improve them. They belong to all of us, everyone should have a say in what they say.

Last week, I posted a contest thread for this subreddit to determine who did the best job of rewriting this ancient post giving a Simple DIY Example and Price Breakdown.

All four are winners in my book but the most votes went to /u/LecherousLumberjack who posted this Simple DIY Example and Price Breakdown

It will be added to the Beginner's Guide along with /u/Grorco's about The Cost of Low Quantity.

LecherousLumberjack will get

  • Personalized flair of his choice on this subreddit

  • Two months of reddit gold

  • Two flavors of his choice ordered and sent from a vendor of his choice

  • and, a $20 donation to a reputable charity of his choice.

/u/isuamadog also offered to chip in $10. Not sure if that's cash or donation, but it's a generous sweetening of the pot either way.

The rest of you might use this post's comment section as an opportunity to help LL write his fancy new flair, lobby for him to pick certain flavors or a certain charity, or simply congratulate and thank him.

Next week, Throwback Thursday will take a look at another article in the DIY Beginner's Guide and see if there's anything we need to add, subtract, or otherwise revise about 4-year-old article covering "DIY Things You Won't Know You Missed Until You Need Them."

I hope SPCA Florida is ok. Not as fancy as the Royal version but it is a hell of a lot closer to me!

How could I forget about the puppies and kitties!? I'm so ashamed...

To make amends for my transgressions, I'm going with SPCA Florida (where I live). Thank you so much for the reminder. I love all the animals (not like that).

"DIY things you didn't know you missed until you need them"? I can safely say we should add u/ID10-T to that list :) Congrats LL!

Wow, I'm so glad people actually liked my post! Gotta say, I wasn't expecting to win so I have no idea what charity/flair yet... any ideas are very much appreciated.

Thank you /u/ID10-T for continuing to update and improve old resources, as well as for providing the prize!

Thank you /u/isuamadog for your added bonus prize and your guide entry. I thought you would win for sure tbh. It was a great write up with all those different scenarios for different types of people.

Thank you to /u/Grorco for his amazing post which inspired me immensely. I'm really glad it's getting included in the sidebar.

Thank you to /u/juthinc and /u/horrend for submitting such excellent guides. I can't imagine it was easy for anyone to pick their favorite with entries like these.

And finally, thank you to everyone who voted, no matter who for. I sincerely hope my guide helps someone even a fraction of how much this sub has, and continues to, help me.

P.S. sorry it took so long for me to reply. I just got off work and saw the good news!

Well, besides something from the obvious source I'm not sure what you'd want...

(And tell /u/ID10-T that one of the flavors you want is BF Chocolate Truffle. I want to see him try to order direct from Russia.)

Damn, I haven't rewatched that in ages. Some great one-liners. You might be on to something there...

Hahaha. You might hate me for this but I'm out of 2 of my favorite flavors (out of the ~40 I've tried), TPA Banana Nut Bread & FW Butterscotch Ripple so I'm probably going with those. I thought about getting something obscure but I don't want to make ID10-T regret doing this lol.

Thank you!

It's looking like a line outta the lumberjack song right now. Fits my username too well.

Congrats man, I really entered to give back. I’m glad my entry will remain in the sub along with the others which include uk and Canada in the write ups for anyone brave enough to search for info. I had meant to match the $10 wherever ID10-T was putting his so when that gets sorted lemme know.

Thank you and same. I was actually wondering how people felt about me possibly adding a couple more sections like that (UK, EU, CAN, maybe another example of an order with enough flavors to make ~5 recipes? Idk). I'm just not sure if that would take away from the simplicity of the original too much.

I haven't told ID10-T yet but I'm going with SPCA Florida, thanks to The Girl with the Nacho Tattoo.

Nice one! There should be an easy way in this electronic age to transfer some funds.

First there needs to be some funds to transfer lol... he's not getting any of these prizes until I get paid tomorrow.

I think the obvious choice is a couple Flavor Monks gins... or maybe some bakers flavors stuff.

right lol whatever is most expensive/hard to get. Those glorious steep time spectrums on their site/store though - pretty neat. I'm a sucker for shit like that.

Flavor Monks gin officially seconded.

Man, I can't do that to poor ID10-T, I would feel so bad.

On the other hand, it would be pretty funny...
