I was born with no sense of smell, as in 100% pitch black blindness of the nose. Obviously this affects taste, but differently than you might think.
If there are others on here with malfunctioning schnozes, I’d love to compare notes on flavors and recipes.
I was gonna make a Voldemort joke, but it felt a bit on the nose.
It’s also worth mentioning that I did NOT kill my brother
Interesting. Would like to hear more from ppl or op. Trying to envision my day without all of the smelly smells I've smelled... can't quite do it. Should do an AmA, man.
Edit: would have a question of "what's it like?", but you don't have the contrast to compare it to.
I got a knee to the face as a kid. Ended up with a seriously deviated septum and basically no sense of smell. I've tried a lot of juices but they all taste 99% identical to me.
Basically no sense of smell......so what can you smell?
Have you vaped anything minty? For me, mint is like a kick to the teeth. The mint flavor concentrates I use recommend something like 1-3% but I use 0.2-0.4% and frequently am overpowered by the mintyness.
Huh, I really haven't. Any reccomendations to get me started?
Do you taste any mint/menthol or just feel the coldness? I'm super curious about if Koolada or WS-23 on its own tastes the same to you, it's the compounds that feel cold but without flavour.
Honestly I’m not 100% sure. I’m an excellent mint detector, but I vividly understand the difference between sensing the taste/aroma and detecting a chemical reaction. For example, pipe cleaner/glue burns the inside of my nose and sinuses, but I cannot smell it. Kind of like a blind person cannot see a finger, but can feel it jabbing them in their eye.
I’m going to have some mint tests on myself with my next flavor order. I’m especially interested in trying the grack recipe (around 1/2 strength) because of how strongly I detect mintyness.
Do you actually care if you taste/smell it? Have you tried flavourless juice? You know, just PG/VG and Nic? I have a pal who does that, even though they have a sense of taste and used bought juice when they started. I have a picky palette and hate 99.9% of juices so my DIY has flavour but it's very subtle and watered down. I just picked a few flavours I thought I'd be OK with and played around. For me I just want it to be tolerable/mostly not there. Things I like most about vaping: Nicotine, breathing, hand to mouth habit.
Hey dude.
One of my old best friends also doesn’t have a sense of smell, but could still taste shit (mostly). I don’t think his palate was up to snuff per se, but he could definitely taste most things.
I’ve been making juice for 3.5yrs and he used to love tasting my juices. I did notice he struggled identifying more intricate or complex flavors, but he definitely was keen on simple and bold recipes. In example, he might not notice the touch of caramel in a strawberry vanilla milkshake juice, but he’d probably recognize it as strawberry ice cream. He can really appreciate something like a straight up strawberry yogurt, though.
I wouldn’t bother giving him really deep flavor profiles- think milk n honey. Peanut, milk, honey, dark flavors like a dab of caramel or butterscotch, etc.. just a couple layers too much for him. He likes them, but prefers the simpler and more bold stuff.
I suspect your friend and I have very similar palates. With a complicated recipe, I frequently just get a net single flavor profile. HOWEVER, if a simple recipe of mine is missing something to complete its “roundness,” I default to adding 0.5% FA butterscotch.
Many subtle flavors are invisible to, but some are incredibly obvious, namely butterscotch and anything minty. TFA strawberry ripe is nothing but sugar for me. It’s my default sweetener until this bigass bottle eventually runs out. Most of my vanillas are indistinguishable from each other, it’s all just vanilla to me. Fruits that are less sweet are VERY distinct, but I cannot always accurately ID them apart from FA forest fruit (which I reeeally like).
I would bet my next paycheck that your friend goes through a lot of garlic. I can’t get enough. If you ever give him food, don’t be bashful with the garlic, salt, anything umami (especially anchovies), black pepper, butter (salted, obviously), and most importantly bacon!
Major key for strawberry: try adding .5-2% INW straw shisha. That is how you will def taste strawberries lol. Vanillas are tricky, but I basically use FA Madagascar vanilla and CAP French vanilla. Madagascar vanilla for a more natural to slightly floral vanilla, cap for a sweet and creamy. I don’t really add vanilla to many of my regular recipes, not even my regular custards, as the vanilla in VCV1 is plenty for me.
and I was gonna edit this in, but can’t let you miss it:
If you like butterscotch, add FW butterscotch ripple to your next order. you’ll thank me later, and if you need help using it in a recipe just holler. it’s a thicker, creamier, velvety butterscotch with 12/10 mouthfeel and flavor. An absolute must have for any butterscotch fan.
My physics teacher in high school lost his sense of taste later. He said that taste masks so much disgusting mouthfeel, because now if he eats a fast food burger or drinks a soda, he can feel that grease and sugar in his mouth and has to rinse his mouth out after eating. He also kept his usual habits. He'd put cream and sugar in his coffee because he just always has, so he didn't stop.
I would win soooo many bets, though. Bet I won't eat that, eh?
😂👏🏻👏🏻....I can smell but I still can’t taste distinctions in recipes, think my taster broke. 😟 I think not smelling wouldn’t be so bad, I spend a lot of money trying to make everything smell good like car fresheners, scents for my diffuser, those things to put in my washing machine and dryer, expensive perfume....good smells = smile, pleasant attitude, bad smells = bad mood and attitude to match.
Did u ever smoke cigarettes OP? Regular or menthol if u did and did u taste anything?
