Throwback Thursday: Make Your Vote Count
submitted about 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

This is part of project I agreed to take on after it was pointed out that so many of the resources in sidebar and wiki are ancient. The idea is, rather than revising them myself, I'd post them here once per week to gather feedback on how to improve them. They belong to all of us, everyone should have a say in what they say.

Last week I promised prizes to the winner of a contest to determine who could do the best job of rewriting this 5-year-old post giving a Simple DIY Example and Price Breakdown.

There were four incredible entries and one outstanding contribution by /u/Grorco about The Cost of Low Quantity. Grorco's work doesn't quite meet the criteria set out by the contest parameters and I'm not sure whether it was supposed to be an entry. But I'm awarding it an honorable mention and a place of honor: It will be immortalized in the Beginner's Guide alongside the post that wins this contest, so we'll have two links instead of just one, Simple DIY Example and Price Breakdown & The Cost of Low Quantity.

My original intent in making a community-vote contest of this was sticking to the spirit of Throwback Thursday, that these resources for new mixers "belong to all of us, everyone should have a say in what they say." And maybe a small side of my own laziness and ineptitude factored in as well: I didn't really want to put forth the effort to rewrite it myself and I figured if I did I'd probably screw it up badly.

Now there's another reason why I'm so glad it's a contest that you can vote on. All of our entries most definitely put in plenty of effort and did not screw it up. Trying to choose one winner from among them would be agonizing. Thankfully I don't have do. Help me choose by casting your vote.

Vote for the distinguished comment that provides a link to the post you think should win by upvoting it to the top.

I'll also post a comment you can reply to for general discussion and such. Please help keep the thread clean and easy for voters to use by limiting other top-level comments. The winner will be announced next Thursday.

This one for me. It goes through three different types of DIYers/scenarios and is great for someone new.

I just wrote that as a supplemental, I knew I didn't have time to do a full write up, but I thought it was something that gets over looked/ confuses beginners. Thanks for the spot! I hope it helps people plan their buying for years to come :)

My general comment: it's stupidly hard to pick a winner here. All 4 entries are great - and combining them would be difficult.

Possible solution: Have a DIY Example / Price breakdown link - that has the 4 entries linked. They can then read all of them, or as much as they need to. Maybe include a short blurb next to each one (eg 'this breakdown uses 3 scenarios to show you...'). Damn I don't know.

As I read the other articles, it’s amazing how each one offers something unique from that mixer’s perspective. The four are a pretty well rounded combination. I guess it’s a fitting conundrum for this forum that a mix of all of them would produce the best result over any single one producing the desired result.

Had no idea there was a contest going on for entries. Where's the sign up?
