Have you been experiminting with this flavor of the Week? Then now is your momint. It's ok if you pepper mint jokes throughout your commints, just make them fresh and minteresting.
submitted about 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is... MINT!

Yep, all the mints. Peppermint, Spearmint, Wintergreen, Creme de Menthe, Chocolate Mint, Encouragemint. LET'S GET MINTY FRESH!

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Next week's flavor will be: Crème Brûlée

The week after that will be: International Creams (Bavarian, Italian, Devon, Hollandaise, Vienna, Catalan, Irish)

10% menthol solution recipe:

90% PG

10% menthol crystals

Mix together and immerse in mildly hot water bath. I usually make around 100g of this stuff, so 90g PG + 10g menthol crystals.

Add to your mixes starting at 8% to achieve Malaysian juice type cooling effect, best not to go beyond 11%

You're welcome.

I do the same but with 40%.

But at what % do you mix it in with juices? Any perceived benefit of mixing at 40%?

Between 1-1.5%. Just less to make. A 30ml lasts me quite a while.

I have many, many mint flavors. Oddly, I don't mix many minty recipes. I've got a couple I've been working on, but I back burnered. I figure I have 8 months or so to get the one ready in time for release next year...

/u/ID10-T, to tie into your 'worst flavors' thread, what would you use to make a "Big White Mint" recipe?

INW Natural Mint is my go to mint for things like mojitos and teas. It's so natural and such a straightforward mint. Mostly spearmint but it has a little bit of peppermint bite.

As far as Peppermint, FA is my favorite. It's potent, a bit spicy and cool. Reminds me of a high end candy cane without the sweetness.

My Vanilla Mint Sex recipe uses both. It's a straight up vanilla mint. No milks or creams. Just a vanilla bomb and mint.

by imNAchogrlabout 7 years agoKooky

I don’t have that Ina natural but I have spearmint could I sub that successfully u think in the vanilla sex recipe kindground? I just want a Good vanilla mint and a Good chocolate mint. I’m thinking like in cooking the best way to elevate chocolate is w a good cocoa and/ or some coffee, so I was thinking ......

Any ideas I’m open or favorite recipes... but maybe Flv milk choc 3, Flv white choc 1, ? Cocoa .5, Fa peppermint 2?, Purilum marshmallow 1, ? Creme de Menthe 1.5?, em or cotton candy 1?..

2 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

FLV or FA spearmint should work.

I'm not a big chocolate vape fan so I'm not sure there. The only 2 chocolate concentrates that I really like are MB Glamour Chocolate and HS Australian Chocolate.

I do know that EM/cotton candy is going to mute things though.

What exactly is creme de menth? I have some and I dont remember purchasing it. It just was in an order. I've been afraid to try it.

You should answer your own question by mixing up a 5-10 ml test batch. (grin) Or you could read CheebaSteeba's review of Flavorah's Creme de Menthe. Here's a snippet . . .
>/u/Vurve said it best when he mentioned that this is a very close representation of a Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookie. The menthol note is very smooth here and not overpowering in anyway. I get a slight hint of chocolate from it, but it's very mellow. The texture is slightly crisp and full. The mint is not super forward, and the chocolatey-creaminess of this makes me feel it would work well in a base or toward the middle range of a receipe. Overall this flavoring is very nice, and works well by itself. I haven't tried it in many mixes, but I immediately find myself wanting to accent that chocolate note a bit more.

It's a classic liqueur. Slightly chocolatey, very minty. Useful in making various 'panty remover' shooters.

I've been eyeing /u/ChemicalBurnVictim's Guavalyptus recipe but I haven't been able to find INW Aloe anywhere I usually shop. However, eucalyptus + cactus sounds pretty tasty to me so I might try to sub it and see if it's good.

> Guavalyptus

>* INW Eucalyptus w/ Mint- .5%

  • INW Aloe- .75%
  • FLV Pink Guava- 1%

Where I might put it? hehehe

I don't know yet. I just wanted to see what it's like. Maybe it's similar to INW in being wet and juicy but without as much cactus taste, if that's the case it could prove very useful.

I've mixed a lot of mints - one thing I ran across recently is the fact that using some cotton candy (Ethyl Maltol) which mutes flavors, actually benefits mint and takes the edge off substantially. I have yet to find a good balance though...

by St1llFrankabout 7 years ago

The only mint I have is Jungle Flavors Mint. I got it cuz it was only $.99 at ECX. I haven't tried it yet but it smells kinda spearmint-y. I really need to get my peppermint game strong. I enjoy it a lot in gums, booze, and actual mints.

Edit: The Banana Menthe Pudding impressions are up. I'll plug through the rest.

All beta/alpha versions that are steeping but have potential. My Holy Vanilla from Chefs should be here tomorrow along with 501's 50 15ml bottles so holy iterations here I come. I'm going to blast Anise and or DV Absinthe in a lot too as it should pair well with a few:

  • W choc creme de rasp - https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/share/3a219dd7-cbc7-46b9-8062-4db18590d26d

0.75% (FLV) Cream

1.5% (FLV) Creme De Menthe

0.5% (MB) Glamour Chocolate

0.35% (INW) Raspberry

1% (INW) Shisha Raspberry

0.50% (INW) Shisha Vanilla

0.25% (FLV) Sweet Coconut

5% (LB) White Chocolate Peppermint

  • Banana Menthe Pudding - https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/share/68488c18-1d85-41de-850a-b74a51ba45e8

0.75% (HS) Banana

1.76% (WF) Banana Purée

1% (FLV) Cream

1.75% (FLV) Creme De Menthe

1.5% (TPA) Marshmallow

1% (FLV) Sweet Coconut

0.50 (FA) Coco

3% (FLV) Vanilla Pudding

---- Edit: 12 day steep - This was my first time using HS Banana and used it right away without STF so I went with the almost universally standard at .75% that also needs to be paired with another banana (don't have FA's). It lives up to the hype but the mix is very Banana forward, a bit too much. Maybe drop the puree to 1.5% as I'm getting that a lot as I'm shocked that it's standing up to some heavy hitters. I'm conflicted because bumping up the pudding/coconut I think it possibly would be spot on as it needs to meld a bit more which I was hoping the 1% FLV creme would have done and even the 1% TPA marshmallow which I don't really like to use Marshmallows and a late sub didn't round or take the edge off the mint or the banana.

What shocks me is the mint, which FLV is pretty subtle, is kicking my ass right now and I can handle mint too, so 100% dump the FA Peppermint to get a baseline and then add on later as you see fit. It needs more creaminess for sure so blast the pudding to 3% which would tone down the banana and mint and 100% bump up the sweet coconut because a little bit higher it'll punch through the stronger flavors but the little I get from it is fantastic and blends perfectly, although not a shock with classic time tested iterations. So much in fact that the next iteration I'm going to throw in a low % of FA coco also.

I think to add the final note is to give it some Vanilla for sure. Holy Vanilla (from what I read) would fit the bill perfectly or I'm really thinking HS French Vanilla Ice Cream because there are some strong ass flavors here and even at .50% which is high but not giving it an eggy note wouldn't be a bully but help round it out, although steeping is a bitch with that one. MB Creamy Vanilla, or maybe CAPS Vanilla Whipped Cream too, although not a lot of people are fans of it. I think they'd all be better choices than Shisha Vanilla

0.5% (FA) Meringue

0.25% (FA) Mild Winter (peppermint)

1% (INW) Shisha Vanilla

0.75% (FLV) Sweet Coconut

IMO: INW Natural Mint is the best true mint hands down.

Also these are all private so I'll keep them up and tweak it as needed but all the anise and other stuff will be different iterations. I'll be making massive amounts tomorrow with some good flavors from Chef's tomorrow and add on to this post as long as I can with my other iterations that make it past round one.

Obviously sub MB Glamour for HS Australian - MB Vanilla for Shisha/holy/whatever - Marshmallow probably isn't needed - JF Dulce De Leche for actually TPA brown sugar - I'll probably cut or dump the Meringue as you get enough sweetness with most of these mixes. I don't have it but VT Vanilla Buttercream Frosting is supposed to be awesome so sub that for Cream Cheese and others too.

I might hate all things licorice but at least we can agree on FLV Creme de Menthe being awesome, it look like.

by xx2000xxabout 7 years ago

I've been doing my own version of "noted" using mints about a month ago after I re-discovered how awesome FLV Creme de Menthe was and using that as a primary to build around. Most should have a good 3+ week steep on them, but all were decent after 3 days and then about a week and a half.

I'm lazy so I stocked up on some coils from www.advancedvapesupply.com that I got today and I'll throw fresh coils & cotton on my Wasp, Entheon, Hadaly, Skyfall (best in the world) and test them all out later tonight.

I have a few others too but I was sick of copy/pasting for 50 minutes straight. I might have to take one or two out, or rather edit it with a notes/impressions, to maybe give somebody an idea or two.

Again, this is beta and some alpha, so I haven't had time to test and then make changes or different iterations and only a few were straight garbage that didn't make the cut. The banana ones I'm the most curious about because that needed a longer steep for sure and it's a boom or bust I think for those.

I'm out of PG until tomorrow but I want to do Fresh03's LB VIC Custard in a few batches, BB Trinity, Holy Vanilla, Anise/absinthe route as I got totally unique FA/DV versions that aren't straight up hit you in your face black licorice but has difference accents to it (I made a post a while ago with descriptions)

I do want to sneak some in as a background note, as I take it you probably don't mind fennel if done right. While others blast it with Rasp/Boysenbery/Black Current to see how it stands up with FLV Creme De Menthe as I have a few bases to work. So after probably 48 iterations hopefully come up with possibly 1-3 worthy recipes that I'll post on ATF when done.

INW Eucalyptus w/Mint is my shit. I’ll use it in almost any fruit to get a real good cough-drop note. It’s not for everyone, but I love it.

My most recent experiment with it:

INW Eucalyptus w/Mint 1.5%

INW Lime 0.5%

TFA Cucumber 2%

WS-23 30% mixture at about 2 drops for every 15ml

This is a rather refreshing lime and cucumber mix that’s great on a summer day. Add some champagne if you wanna really make it pop, or some sweetener to make it more of a cucumber limeade.
