noob checklist

I plan on starting to DIY my own juice here shortly. I just want to make sure I have everything I may need and I figured you folks would be great at telling me what to nix or to add. Here we go:

Base Materials: Nicotine River

- 100mg ~~VG~~ PG base nicotine 27.99

- VG 1L 9.29

- PG 1L 7.49

~~- 100 ML Granulated Cylinders x3 4.99~~

~~- 250 ML Beaker - 3.79~~

~~- 50 ML Flask 2.49~~

~~- 100 ML Reagent x4 3.99~~

- Syringe 5ML x10 4.50

- 14g Blunt Tip Needles x10 .49

~~- Boston Round Bottle 15ML x10 .75~~

~~- Gloves x5 7.99~~

~~- 5 ML Pipette (Box of 500) 37.50~~

E-Liquid-Recipes

- Calculator Free

Amazon

- ~~AWS-600 BLM Scale 6.84~~

- LB 501 26.05

~~Best Buy~~

~~- Insignia 3.5 CU FT Chest Freezer 119.99~~

Grand Total Without Flavors: ~~346.43~~ 79.83

We have a freezer but I would like to have a separate one for storage of the chemicals. Never be too safe. The price doesn't bother me because I know in the long run things will be almost free. As for flavorings I know it is all suggestive but what company has the better flavors? I tend to vape more fruit and dessert type flavors. And chances are I will start off small - mixing single fruit tones like mainly just strawberry or vanilla etc.

From what I have read VG is harder to work with, so would it be better to get a PG based nicotine? 70/30 is the mix I would want to get too eventually, I will probably start out at 50/50 until I get the hang of things.

Thank you in advance.

Definitely go with PG nicotine. It mixes better than VG.

And don’t bother with all the breakers and shit, you’re getting the scale so you don’t need that stuff.

I really don’t think buying a separate freezer for the Nicotine is necessary. I keep a 1L bottle in a bag in the back of my freezer and have never had a problem. I’d just save that $120 and use it for flavors lol.

Personally I’d get the lb-501 scale and lose the beakers syringes pipettes etc. I’d even lose the gloves but I don’t buy 100mg nic. I work with 24 or 48. Also, I’d get a liter of pg max. The 500ml bottles the pg comes in I eventually reuse later as mixing base to add to mixes. So I buy pg 500ml at a time. After a year I still only have 1 bottle empty. Also I’d get some bottles with tops that aren’t droppers for freezing nic. I’m sleepy. Hope that made sense. Goodnight.

Exactly. You're wasting a bunch of money on shit you don't need and won't use. I've never used gloves for 100mg nic, just wash your hands if you get some on you. I live with a ten year old and animals, I just keep my nic in an old shipping box tucked in the back of the freezer. Be smart and get PG nic.

You know I only use vg nic and I’ve never had a problem. None of this stuff is nearly as dangerous or as messy as it seems but it doesn’t hurt to be careful.ive never spilled a whole bottle of nic before but that’d suck with or without gloves.

The only thing I've heard bad about VG nic is that it can develop hot spots easier and that it's harder to work with due to the viscosity. I've always just used PG nic, as that and my flavorings are my only source of PG and I find having a little helps with flavor.

PG based nicotine is easier to work with. You're also going to appreciate a scale that measures one more decimal than the one you selected.

If you measure by weight you can just put your ingredients directly into the bottle. You shouldn't need all the glassware to mix, unless you plan to make mixes significantly larger than your bottles. Speaking of, those bottles are a little small in my opinion, but if that's your preferred size go for it. I personally like 10ml plastic for small bottles, and 30ml or higher in glass.

If there was one thing I could tell you do though it would be buying some nice condiment bottles to store your PG/VG. Most other containers will leak. Condiment bottles should hold in the nasty, and they're very convenient.

Can you share a link with an example of what you mean by condiment bottles? It sounds like a life saving idea - but I'm having a hard time picturing what you mean.

Thank you! I was guessing the standard red & yellow plastic bottles - I was close.... Awesome tip!

This. Twist caps are much better than yorker caps. They don't accidentally come off, and they don't get lost.

You have a bunch of giant mixing vessels and then you have tiny bottle for your actual product. I would nix the flasks and things because you can just mix in the bottle with the scale. get some bigger bottles, less than 30 ml are kinda pointless, you don't need to fill them all the way, grab some even bigger bottle for recipes you like.

you won't need nearly that much PG, I used 48 mg PG nic and pg flavors and 100% VG base and my mixes came out 70/30. even with vg nic, most recipes are still in the 10-15% flavor range so you would only need to may up another 20% PG so you only need about 1/3rd as much PG as VG.

you only really need the syringes for flavoring and nic so you can probably get away with just 1 and 5 ml sizes. VG and PG can be done with a funnel or free hand if you get some wide mouth bottles. I mix/steep into 120 ml chubby bottle, then transfer to 30 ml unicorn tip bottle for actual use.

a box of nitrile gloves from the pharmacy will probably be cheaper than ordering from the site, I'd just double check before you order.

only a few flavors really need pipettes because they will fuck with syringes, ripe banana is one, so i'd double check your flavors before dropping the cash on a box of something you may never use.

You also probably don't really need a minifridge. room temp and out of the light is good enough in my opinion, this is kind of overkill.

Their isn't really a best company for flavors, when you look around at recipes you will see most of them mix and match companies. It may be worth it to just get the starter kit on nic riv and take a small hit to your dollar efficiency, just to get you started and make your second order more informed. It still comes down to 6 cents/ml for the kit so it's not really a bad way to go, plus it will get you an assortment of tools to get started and you can decide which ones you are really going to use.

also go for a scale with .01g resolution like this one AMIR Digital Mini Scale, 200g 0.01g on amazon.

I doubt you'll need that 1g of PG, you'll end up using far less, go with 500ml if you plan to use it, I just mix max VG personally.

As for syringes, get plastic luer lock syringes, 10 packs are cheap. Don't bother with the graduated cylinders, beaker or flask. Make sure your boston rounds have the poly caps, they work best.

Go with a better scale, I've used the lb-501 since I started almost 3 years ago and I've never even changed the batteries. (to be honest I probably have I just can't remember, so they do last)

I personally break my nic down into 30ml brown glass boston rounds. My nicotine comes with a big warning sticker, so I attached that to a little box. And I keep my broken down nic in that box in my freezer. It's clearly marked, I'd only worry about kids.

As for what flavors to get, find some recipes you think you'll like, say 5 or 6. Then buy the flavorings to make those 5 or 6 recipes. This will also give you a base to work from, when you see a new recipe you like you might already have 3 out of 6 flavors, so you only have to buy those 3.

What is the estimated shelf life on these flavors?

2 points

by infra_d3adabout 7 years ago

No idea, to be honest I've never run into the issue of one going bad. But you'll tend to go through your most used flavors pretty quickly, and not use others at all. Most people say 1-2 years is the shelf life of flavors.

Awesome! Thanks! I spent a good chunk of today researching DIY Juice. My original plan was to learn how to build coils and get away from sub-ohms, and then take on juice - but decided today this seems more fun - so I'm switching the two. It's fun planning recipes to try, and my 'oh... I need to try that flavor!' list ended up exceeding 60 flavors. I was worried they may only last 6 months or so knowing my luck.

I should clarify I'm not planning on my first buy to include 60 flavors. Rationally, I think 5 should be ok if I plan which simpler recipes to start with.

Here's an example of how little you need to mix, this is everything I use outside of flavors and nic.

Looks good with the changes! This is going to be personal preference but after trying pipettes and syringes and being unsatisfied, I tried some 4oz twist-top bottles and they are way easier and faster for PG/VG. Flavorings should come with their own dropper or drip top and I use 30ml amber Boston Round bottles for nicotine. Again, it's personal preference but keep it in mind!

I will for sure. Thank you very much. It already seems like a good idea to store the nicotine in smaller batches. Less to work with at one time.

You won't need that much PG, especially if your nic is PG. I'd keep like 5 boston rounds for your nic. Decant your nic into each and fill to the top leaving as little air as possible. Put them in the freezer and a working bottle in the fridge. Then thaw a bottle when your working bottle runs out. Nic River flavors come with dropper tips already so you won't pipettes or syringes. If you get boston rounds they come with a dropper cap too

I just started myself and I bought premixed 70/30 3mg to make things as easy as possible at the start.

Just thought that might be something you'd be interested in too.

If you use 70/30 premix, you'll end up with something different because flavors (and usually nic) are PG based.

I am new to DIY and abt to dip my with premix...what do mean different? Did u mean in a bad way? Because I want things to be simple as possible first an it seems premix and flavor concentrate seems like the best option for me.
