Flavoring turned pink?
submitted about 7 years ago by jphx

I have TFA Cheesecake Graham crust that has turned pink. I placed 3 separate orders from the same vendor. 11/17, 4/18 and 5/18. The large bottle was from 5/18, small pink bottle was from 4/18 and the oldest one is the one that is not pink. All three were stored in the exact same spot, actually right next to each other. What gives? Large bottle hasn't even been opened yet. Should I just toss the pink ones and not even bother to test them out?

Personally I'd test them each side by side and just see if they taste different before tossing.

This would be my bet too. I have had TPA Creme de Menthe turn pinkish like that before. Flavor was the same though and I kept using it without noticing any difference in the end.

Same thing happened to my bottle of EM and a couple others. I would think it's just oxidation, but can't say for sure. I dnt think there's anything wrong with them necessarily, though.

Agree. Depending on the flavor and the compounds in that flavor, it can change color with oxidation. It also doesn’t take very long for some flavors to change color, you can see color change in some flavors that are just a few months old and doesn’t mean they are bad

Mine are kept in a box under my desk. The only time they see the light of day is when I'm mixing. And by light I mean the florescent lights of my kitchen at 2am.

not sure then. i've seen this pink tint only on old juice (2+ years) and juice that was left open to air.

Yeah that's why I am a bit confused. It looks like juice left on a dripper then forgotten about for a long time. The large bottle still has its seal from the company. I have had flavorings that turn way dark but not other colors.

Usually this is normal in my experience but it doesn't hurt to test the flavoring

Flavorings sometimes turn things weird colors with age -- but sometimes they don't. It's almost certainly still good, but you might want to run a small test batch to make sure.

I've had this too, most recently with LA Clear Grape. Not clear anymore, pinkish hue. Flavor still tastes the same though, so I'm thinking maybe it just oxidized, perhaps the source barrel or wherever the vendor stored it was exposed to oxygen and or light for too long or too often and it was already on it's way to oxidizing by the time it was shipped to me.

Hoping it's safe cause I've been using it (I pretty much stick to my grape bubblegum, whereas my SO loves to switch it up all the time) a lot lol.

I'm going to make a small batch and try. I use it in my adv and go thru a ton. Really hate to waste the giant bottle.

There is Nothing wrong w your juice! It just doesn’t go bad overnight if ever really and if it was bad you would know just like you know if meat is bad. The only thing that happens is it might lose potency, but if the juice can’t hurt u now there’s nothing that can magically happen to it to all of the sudden for no reason make it harmful! Some air hit and it changed color that’s it that’s all...I think the older the juice is the more likely it will change colors so the newest one that you bought was more than likely from an older batch than the one you bought that’s not colored. NO BIG DEAL! Don’t try to make something of nothing...really, it’s very simple harmless flavoring.
