Weekly Questions/Discussion Thread - Week of August 27, 2018
submitted about 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page. If you’re a New Mixer check out the DIY Beginners Guide and the links below then feel free to ask about anything you’re still not clear on.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights from last week:

/u/Hardheadedsoftskills asked for one recipe that blew our minds and instead got a buzzfeed-esque list of 10 amazing recipes by /u/ID10-T all of which are sure to blow your mind (you’ll never believe that I haven’t mixed #4)

/u/AlfredPudding introduced us to The Cheesecake Trinity with a trio of recipes to try out, two of which he even managed to incorporate The Blueberry Trinity and the Daveberry Trinity, respectively.

/u/Leilani_H aka Shark Lord dropped not 1, not 2, but 10 flavor reviews on us last week in honor of FOTW and her, Fresh03, and Slasha taking over Noted. If you need more Leilani on your screen be sure to check out the Mixin Vixens.

/u/juthinc shared Apple Blossom 1-2-3 which he assures us is not related to the baked good which I only just now learned was a thing. When’s the real Apple Blossom recipe coming out?

And speaking of recipes /u/warefairsoda took a break from posting what I can only assume is several years worth of their recipes this month, to air their grievances about ELR and ATF’s website issues.

For anyone craving more flavor reviews that you can’t (currently) find in the Flavor Review wiki check out /u/ConcreteRiver’s new endeavour Taste of Concrete

PSA: Vapers Tek has been stocked back up on the INW Tobacco Absolutes and for Pipe flavors. They also now carry INW Black Cherry for Pipe, so that’s pretty cool.

Well we are clearly going with plan c. Tobacco C! I’m trying black fig, none more black and back in black. I may have made that last one up.

Unfortunately, they don't ship at a reasonable price north of the border, at least that I've been able to find. So good I bought all those direct from Inawera.

Pineapple, mango and menthol. Didn't find anything already made, but didn't look hard.

Fails: TFA juices pineapple tastes like Vanilla, inw pineapple and sweet mango tasted like soap, inw pine and fa mango was also a little weird.

Currently: Inw pine and FLV mango. Any input on the next step or additives?

2 points

by dontpanic4242about 7 years ago

If you're tasting soapy flavors you may be using too much. Most INW flavors are pretty strong. What percentage did you try them at?

3 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

INW Pineapple is the exception to INW concentrates being strong.

2 points

by MasterBeernutsabout 7 years ago

This is true. I use INW Pineapple up to 6-8% in MTL mixes - it's weak by INW standards.

1 points

by dontpanic4242about 7 years ago

I did not realize that. Only got my INW pineapple in a couple weeks ago and haven't done much with it yet.

1 points

by mjswooperabout 7 years ago

Ahh, apologies all on not staying what I mixed. 3 mixed of Inw @8% and each mango (TFA juices, fa mango, FLV mango) at 2%.

by MasterBeernutsabout 7 years ago

>inw pineapple and sweet mango tasted like soap, inw pine and fa mango was also a little weird.

Have you tried CAP Golden Pineapple as the pineapple base, with INW Pineapple added to taste? For the Mango, I'd use a mix of FLV Mango and CAP Sweet Mango. Can't remember the ratios off-hand, they're written down at home. Using FA Mangosteen at around 1% to boost a mango or tropical flavour is quite popular now too. AND let's not forget bloody annoying TFA Jackfruit, who would be begging me from the lipstick rack to be added to this recipe profile. Shut it Jacker - you can't be in everything!~ Jeesus.

Oh, and for the cooling - I'd add 1% WS-23, and for sweetness (if needed) between 0.2-0.5% CAP Super Sweet.

1 points

by mjswooperabout 7 years ago

I tried the golden pineapple but found it a bit weak/muddling, though that may have been an error as I did not steep it. I've found pineapple needs about 4 days. I'll give your suggestion a go. Thanks for the reply.

Golden pineapple needs a few days to come out/settle down in my experience.

>the baked good which I only just now learned was a thing

The baked good is essentially just a apple pie with WAY too much crust, and possibly a good bit of cinnamon sugar. Not a terrible thing IRL (although it's really too dry to be really enjoyable to eat.)

And does that other bit mean CR won't be doing useful (as in non-youtube) reviews any more?

What would be good replacement for (INW) Raspberry in r Grack Juice by philosaphucker?

Maybe mixing it without a replacement is a good idea?

6 points

by isuamadogabout 7 years ago

A longer answer for you than my dear terse friend u/EdibleMalfunction might go like this:

Most recipes go through quite a bit of development before they are shared with the public. Substitutions can be made but then you’re not going to be tasting what everyone else is enjoying and you may find yourself with a vape wondering what everyone sees in it. Some stuff is an easier substitute than others. But, as a general rule, the more strangely unique and well received a recipe, the less likely there will be an appropriate 1:1 substitute. And grack is an extremely unique recipe. It’s like the chicken and waffles of the vaping world. You really have to try it at one of the best places first before you can enjoy the knockoff.

Edit: also don’t let that stop you from trying either. But have no expectations. See what happens and mix small.

Well, new flavor order time then :D

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

I remember /u/philosophucker posting few weeks back a fairly detailed explanation of what job each flavor was doing in Grack. Which was useful to me, as I'm working on a remix to improve it by getting rid of the strawberry. Just need to work the levels out perfectly...

Here's the breakdown of how he made it and why he used each ingredient.

For the lazy...

>INW Raspberry @0.5%: INW Raspberry (Malina) was chosen next to offer a strong punch to compete with that crazy cactus and grape combo. I didn't go any higher because I didn't want it to try to take over the mix.

Where can you find out the chemical compounds used in specific flavorings? I'm sure this info is in this sub somewhere, but I've tried searching like ten different ways and am not making any progress.

You guys should try making high PG juices. I've been trying to clone Backwoods Blueberry on and off for months now but nothing seemed to get the flavor where I wanted it.

I heard it was 80PG/20VG so I made a 10ml tester at that ratio and WOW. Words won't do the difference justice. Where before the flavor was mild at best this ratio transformed the taste. Now even the inhale on a puff feels saturated with flavor. The vapor is thin but it's taste is heavy on your tongue.

If I wanted razer blades in my throat, I'd just use razerblades

1 points

by ironfairyabout 7 years ago

I tried it and it feels no different from a 70vg/30pg ratio. I get more of a throat hit from tobacco flavors.

6 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Username should be ironthroat

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

Not to mention that ratio won't even work in most setups

5 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

...and I'd be saying goodbye to my throat. 20% PG is barely comfortable. 30% PG is uncomfortable. 80%? Fuggeddaboutit.

2 points

by melindaj20about 7 years ago

It's the other way for me. VG above 60% and I'm in danger of an asthma attack. It really fucks with my lungs. However, I can vape 100%PG just fine. It sucks because I came across juice I wanted to try but they only had Max VG.

Hi guys, I was wondering If these recipes will burn my coils: Sucker Punch clone ( http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/124922/Suicide%20Bunny%20Sucker%20Punch%20clone%20v2 ) or Mother's Unicorn Milk: http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/121795/Mother%27s%20Unicorn%20Milk

Since I'm not experienced with TPA liquids I don't want to waste my money and time. I'm using a DROP RDA with dual alien coils.

by dontpanic4242about 7 years ago

You probably won't have a good time with them if you mix at those percentages. They're old recipes that I don't think were very good when I tried them back 2-3 years ago. I'd try to find other recipes or cut the flavor percentages by at least half, maybe more.

My excitement to finally be able to mix up and try Abuela by Fear was swiftly ruined today, checking off my flavour order when it arrived and I have been sent INW Vanilla instead of INW Shisha Vanilla. I've looked on the vendor website and they're definitely different flavours and not a missing word on the relabelling. Can't seem to find any reviews of much info on people trying it either.

Not really a question in here but more of a place to air my disappointment. I do have Holy Vanilla but the flavour review says this is not as creamy so not sure how well this will transition into the recipe. I'll probably give it a go regardless as a 1:1 sub and see how it goes while the vendor sorts out the wrongly picked concentrate.

by ID10-Tabout 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Do you know if it's Vanilla Concentrate, Vanilla Cream, Vanilla Bourbon, or Vanilla Classic? I can give you my impression of any of those but sadly IMO all of them would be a poor substitute for Shisha Vanilla in that recipe.

2 points

by horrendabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

>Vanilla Concentrate

This is the one I've got, hit me with the bad news it's the worst of the bunch! Dark and malty looking at the noted notes.

Luckily it was a large(ish) order so have other new recipes to try, Leche de Coco currently which is delicious off the shake.

3 points

by ID10-Tabout 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Dark and malty summarizes it nicely.

INW Vanilla Concentrate 1.5% - A darker but not spicy sweet vanilla that tastes sort of like a vanilla malt, but doesn’t feel like one. It’s creamy, but nowhere near as creamy as a milkshake. It’s sweet but it’s a very malty sweetness and it has a hint of being almost roasted. Sort of a bitter edge despite all the sweetness, like molasses. Kind of odd, not yucky, but just kind of odd.

I'm trying to recreate the best drink ever... Cherry-Limeade Cola. Here's what I have so far http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/2630173/Cherry-Lime+Cola Its good but definitely need to use less EM, wanted to try to get rid of some of that bitterness from lime, but went overboard. Maybe more champagne next time but I dont like it more than 2%. Any thoughts/tips for this?

3 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

I actually have a cherry limeade concentrate. But... short of using that, 3% TFA Cherry Extract, 2% cold pressed lime tahity, .5% distilled lime tahity, and some FA cola, along with some VT fizzy sherbet and WS-23. You don't need a really bitter lime for limeade, at least not as the main lime.

2 points

by voxalasabout 7 years ago

added those to my shopping list. just made some with less EM but the lime and cola could still be stronger. hopefully the cherry extract will be good enough to let me use my fa cola

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

You could always add some INW Cherries. (Note: not INW Cherries in Liqueur, not INW Cherry. Yes, those Polocks are annoying.)

by twoambienabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Found a recipe I'd like to try but want to make a couple substitutions. How does this look?

https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/13155

Was:

  • (FW) Butterscotch Ripple 3.5%
  • (FA) Cream Fresh 1%
  • (TPA) Graham Cracker Clear 2.5%
  • (CAP) Vanilla Custard 5%
  • (TPA) Vanilla Custard 2%

New:

  • (FW) Butterscotch Ripple 3.5%
  • (FA) Cream Fresh 1%
  • (TPA) Cheesecake (Graham Crust) 2.5%
  • (CAP) Vanilla Custard 6%

Not trying to stay true to the original so much as create a good juice, so any suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

Alright so I wouldn’t say I’m new to mixing eliquids but I’m definitely new in the manner that you guys are doing it. I just need like a break down of how you guys do it because you’re using percentages that I’m not sure I’m understanding. This including flavor websites I’ve seen before but never used. I get my VG and PG from Delosi Labs or what used to be nicotinelabs. All I’m really asking is what are the better sites for VG and PG and what are these percentages of flavors you guys are mixing and how it works?

5 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

Percentages are just percentages. It's simple math really. Percentages of the mix. Use a mixing calculator.

2 points

by Lvcciabout 7 years ago

These calculators seem to want you to add nicotine, and I do not want nicotine in my juice. I don’t understand how these calculators work at all. Steam engine, very first box you’ve got the amount of liquid you want to mix in mL. Then you’ve got nicotine strength in volume or weight. Well what is that supposed to mean? I don’t want nicotine. Next box is flavoring but we’ll skip that for now. Next two boxes are nicotine base liquid and then target. First is nicotine strength and VG/PG ratio and the second box: target, is setup the same. Now how would someone who doesn’t want nicotine use one of these calculators? I guess not at all?

3 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

Stick a zero in there... Come on. Volume = spits out ml, weight = spits out grams. Steam calculator sucks though. Use ELR or ATF

2 points

by La_Pesadillaabout 7 years ago

I've been mixing for awhile (3ish years) and I've never been able to create a pure vanilla recipe. I've tried Vanilla custard, Madagascar, Vanillin, etc. Does anyone have a good Straight Vanilla recipe that only tastes of Vanilla?

2 points

by mlowdiabout 7 years ago

This is 100% not ready for the recipes thread, but I’m experimenting with something interesting I’d like to share. I get a STRONG honey note off of FA Maxx-Blend, so I decided to treat the tobacco notes like a secondary and ended up trying this (all FA):

Cream Fresh @ 4% / Maxx-Blend @ 3% / Vanilla Bourbon @ 2% / Hypnotic Myst @ 1%

This blend seems to enhance the honey notes (I think the vanilla brings out that heavy sweetness) and the Myst kinda sits in the background with a slightly bitter bite. It’s interesting.

Anyone else get this honey in Maxx-Blend? Any other ideas for what to do with it? It’s a lousy tobacco IMHO, but it has... something.

by nikkeolson81about 7 years ago

I don’t know if I’m on the right thread to ask this question but I guess I’ll find out. I’m new to mixing and I really want to learn. But I’m confused.

Let’s say that I’m gonna mix a juice with 3 different flavors. To make my question easier to understand we can say that all the 3 flavors should be mixed with 6%. Should I mix with 6% + 6% + 6% and have a total 18% flavors, then add VG, PG and Nic? Or should I mix 2% + 2% + 2% and have a total 6% flavors and then add VG, PG and Nic?

I don’t know if my question makes any sense but as I said, I’m a newbie and learning🙂 I also hope that you understand my English haha I’m from Sweden
