Hey all, I'm still fairly new and just have a couple of questions regarding one flavor in particular. As the title suggests, I'm asking about TPA Slim Mint Cookie in particular.
I purchased this thinking I could use it as a standalone flavor until I got the hang of things and try my hand at creating my own Thin Mints flavor. I feel like this was a mistake, because I mixed a test batch tonight and kind of regret it.
The concentrate is black. My other flavorings are clear, so this was a bit of an alarm for me. I mixed it by itself at 3.5%, thinking it would lighten up a bit. Not a chance - it's more of a really dark brown as opposed to black, but still dark. I pulled up TPA's MSDS (Links to PDF file) on it to try to find the source of the color.
What I did find? Along with a warning of "do not inhale!"... Peppermint Oil. I've heard time and time again about the dangers of vaping oils/lipid pneumonia concerns. This, combined with the color, makes me want to toss out the batch and just reserve the flavoring for coffee or something.
Has anyone used this before, and if so is it worth keeping around? My gut is telling me not to bother taste testing and just dump it, but maybe I'm just overreacting. What are your thoughts?
TL;DR: TPA Slim Mint Cookie is a dark brown/almost black color at 3.5% and contains peppermint oil. Is it safe to vape?
#HOLY SHIT DO NOT VAPE THIS, you're wrong about the why but lipid pneumonia IS a concern with this flavoring.
Both you (OP) and /u/bigchilin need to read the sidebar, specifically the link that mentions essential oils and lipid pneumonia. Peppermint oil and other essential oils are not lipids and ~~are fine to vape~~ thus can't cause lipid pneumonia, though many are unsafe to ingest at all and even those safe to ingest require sufficient dilution before vaping.
#You know what is a lipid, though, and thus not safe to inhale? FUCKING COCOA BUTTER.
Check section 3 of TPA's own SDS if you don't believe me.

Edit: I had typed this up with the assumption we're talking about essential oils that are safe to ingest when sufficiently diluted and hadn't considered that it came off as meaning all essential oils are safe to vape. /u/OneThousandNopes rightly reminded me that some are not, so I've edited that middle bit accordingly (original text struck through, new text in italics).
For the love of God don't say that essential oils are safe to vape. OK they may not have the lipid problem but a lot are extremely toxic if taken internally; they're immensely concentrated. A lot are toxic to pets too, and you need to be damn careful with essential oils if you're pregnant. Only a few essential oils are safe to be used as food flavouring.
If it says in the sidebar that essential oils are safe to vape that needs to be removed pronto.
Shit, I hadn't even considered that people might take this to apply to any essential oil, I was thinking things known to be okay to ingest in small amounts like peppermint and orange and had assumed dilution was implicit, that's my bad. I've edited my comment accordingly.
Thank you! It didn't even occur to me that peppermint oil might not be a lipid, I just saw the word "oil" and flipped lol. Thanks for clearing that up!
I also didn't even think about the cocoa butter being a concern. Wow, late-night brain! Thought I had read the sidebar here, but I guess not. Thanks for the heads up!
Edit: I did read the sidebar here! I just don't see the link in question. So, doing a quick search I found this thread - is this the correct post?
Chill bro I’m just saying that cause I’ve heard it over a 100 times don’t need to put a stick up ur ass Lol
The part where I called out you and OP needing to read about essential oils not being lipids and thus safe to vape was chill enough.
The part about this not being safe to vape because it has cocoa butter in it, OTOH, is not something to be chill about.
Sounds like a job for.... FLV Creme de Menthe!~ This is one serious standalone. Should do the job for you buddy.
Chocolate flavors are often fairly dark, from light brown to black.
AlsoI'm pretty sure all of their SDS say not to inhale.
The only issue that I've read about with coloring is Decadent Vapors green Absinthe that can give people issues (read rivers review) although it's supposed to be so damn good that you don't give a F. I got my order in through chefs along with some other licorice and anise and going to go on a bender destroying coils like a mofo.
I have it thinking the same thing looking for a thin mint single flavor...pfft! Didn’t happen lol...I have Capella cool mint, tpa mint candy, fw chocolate mint and it’s also very dark... none of them scratch the itch alone and I wish I could recommend a specific recipe, I cannot. I would suggest maybe getting some creme de menthe and some milk chocolate and or maybe chocolate cake and try yourself and mints of course I believe Inawera mint something ( mixture ? 🤦🏼♀️), anyway, it’s pretty highly recommended around here. Maybe look at some recipes and get a better idea of what is popular to use and good luck! ....;)
I’d say no, due to the fact that it has an oil in it.
This is my current line of thinking. The moment I saw "peppermint oil" the alarms started going off in my head.
You realize that's one of the main things they use to make menthol.. it's fine, you wouldn't want to vape it concentrated though, I'd imagine that would be horrible.
Edit: As for the color, I assume it's the chocolate giving it the dark color. I have 4 or 5 of them and they are all super dark(and extremely potent).
