I'm at a loss with blueberry cheesecake
submitted about 7 years ago by blacksun2012

I'm not getting any blueberry at all out of it.

I'm using the holy Trinity for my blueberry, and LA cheesecake and tfa vanillin for the cheesecake.

My recipie Tfa blueberry extra 3% Fw blueberry 2% Fa bilberry .5% La cheesecake 5% Tfa Vanillin(10%) 2%

Ok, so blueberry, as potent as it is in fruits, doesn't stand up in creams. FW Blueberry may cloud out any strawberries even as low as .5% in a fruit mix, but something with the strawberries allow them to stand out when paired with creams. I've also struggled with this profile, as well as a blueberry yogurt, blueberry smoothie, and blueberry ice cream. The only thing I can suggest is making a STRONG blueberry flavor profile, then adding a small amount of creams and bakeries to it.

I think a BB profile benefits a lot from dragonfruit (or other emulsifiers, havent read up on a lot of others). Id10ts Viserion is a stellar blueberry that sits on top of the bavarian cream + vanilla swirl he uses quite prominently. I think the high amount of dragonfruit he used helps it stand up a lot.

Exactly this. This man knows.

Yes this is great advice, I was working on a blueberry custard/cream last month and ended up adding more blueberry because it became very faint, it's pretty dank now tho after ~4 weeks steeping for the custard.

Gonna try a BB/SB yogurt parfait next.

Had same issues on Loop RDA at 60w, no blueberry taste from holy Trinity at all.

Tried it on Peerless RDA at 90-110 (double alien coil) - whole bunch of blueberry flavor, almost too much tbh and cheesecake is strong as well.

I believe holy Trinity tastes much beater on high wattage.

Running about 130 on a dead rabbit

by W8_4Uabout 7 years ago

130 is high. Is airflow wide open (probably is)?

How close your coils are to airflow and drip tip?

Close your airflow half way and go from 30 to 130 w.

Then give it to your friend and see if he can taste anything.

It's a mech 130 is peak power realistically it's probably 90ish it's the dead rabbit so coils sit right under the driptip and the airflows not massive but is wide open.

I've messed with it a bit but I just don't get anything off of it

This is off-topic as shit but does FA Bilberry smell like really old stale water to anyone? Or akin to musty damp clothes? Really strange, daren't vape it.

by amouthforwarabout 7 years ago

it smells horrendous. but under 1% in a recipe it does add a little zing. But yeah, the bottle and even in a mix too high it smells like someone wiped their sweaty ass crack with musty gym socks. I think there's better flavors if you need tartness, I really like using JF Strawb Sweet it has a nice tart bite to it IMO.

Ahh good to know it's supposed to smell terrible.

3 points

by blacksun2012about 7 years ago

It's got an oddness to its odor, but really works its magic in low percentage.

It seems to be a common held opinion that FA bilberry is a funky flavor with even more so of a smell. But people better at mixing and describing than me have said it gives a nice supporting flavor of blueberry skin to the blueberry trinity and overall seems to be one of those flavors you keep very low for good results.

It's really not a good flavor. I use CAP SL Blueberry instead of it when I need to add some freshness to candied blueberries.

Wondering if it's gone off/a bad batch or if it's supposed to smell like that really.

Usually the trinity gets .1% INW Lemon Mix (or, if you're limited in options, .25-.5% FA Lemon Sicily) to make the flavor pop a bit.

Yes yes yes. OP - you need to add the Holy Splash of Citrus. And raise the blueberry %'s slightly. Done! I do this over the Dragonfruit remedy and it works wonders mate.

I’ve had issues with vanillan mellowing and muting my fruit flavors, and you’re using substantially more than I have in the past. I typically mix it between 0.5-1.2. Try lowering, subbing, or removing it.

Full disclosure: I’ve never mixed blueberry anything, so if this doesn’t work I’m out of ideas.

I'm gonna go ahead and second this. I was surprised how much vanillin chilled out certain notes in trying it out in 2 recipes.

Here’s another recipe that’s my best version. .5 fa bilberry, 4.5 fw blueberry, 1.5 tpa cheesecake graham crust, 1 fa cookie, 2.5 tpa dx Bavarian cream, 1 fa marshmallow, 3 cap New York cheesecake. 14 day steep. Up it to 20% flavor for mtl/pod

I love blueberry vapes (blueberry everything tbh). I too didn't have much luck with the trinity. I've had success using higher percentages of TPA Blueberry Wild (7-9%) with FW Blueberry (1-3%). My friends enjoy it too. I've used it with ice creams, bakery flavors and a custard.

Wild is so subtle but great flavor profile.

Try using a lot more FW Blueberry (like 5 to 6%) and adding a touch (like 0.25%) of whatever lemon flavor you have available.

Like lemon Sicily?

by ID10-Tabout 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Sure. I prefer FE Lemon Sicily or CAP Italian Lemon Sicily for this sort of thing but if FA Lemon Sicily is what you’ve got, that’ll help.

3 points

by blacksun2012about 7 years ago

I'll give that a shot too

Try TFA blueberry candy. I did a cheesecake with that and could definitely taste it.

by eyemakepizzaabout 7 years ago

I’m in the same pickle as you but with a Blueberry Ice Cream.

The blueberry is there but it’s very faint.

u/Foment_Life and I have been discussing this and his suggestion, which I haven’t gotten to mix up yet, was to bump the Billberry to 1% and lower Blueberry Extra to 2%. That was off the OG Trinity %’s though which I see you’ve already altered.

Mix up u/ID10-T's Viserion. Love it!

3 points

by eyemakepizzaabout 7 years ago

If u/ID10-T thinks Lemon Sicily will work in place of FE Lemon I certainly will! If not I’ll have to grab that and give it a go!

I did mix up his pineapple ice cream and it was absolutely fantastic!

It should work. Just keep it low.

got a recipe?

by ID10-Tabout 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Awwww, thanks. Yeah, not creamy enough to pass as "blueberry ice cream" - more like a great glob of frozen blueberry pie filling on top of a smaller blob of vanilla whipped cream. Should scratch that blueberry & cream itch though, right?

3 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

It scratches a lot of my itches! Don't sell yourself short. It's an excellent recipe that many of the people I mix for are truly enjoying.

I had a thought earlier: CAP blueberry Jam might be the key we are missing

Bilberry + 0.25% (or less) TFA Huckleberry provides a pretty solid dark berry.

Also check out FLV Blueberry Muffin. it's a delicious baked blueberry flavor with pretty much 0 muffin right around 3%.

The Trinity is amazing. But as I usually mix creams the blueberry extra often gets lost, and I have to pump up FW blueberry.

Might want to try something like...

0.5% FA Bilberry

3% FLV Blueberry Muffin

2-3% FW Blueberry

Possibly add

0.1-0.25% TFA Huckleberry

Very interesting, Thanks!

I’m missing a few things but I’ll tack them on my (ever growing no matter how many things i order) list for Memorial Day!

I've played with it a bit but can't hit a sweet spot

3 points

by eyemakepizzaabout 7 years ago

Exactly.

Part of me thinks the bakery flavors are just overpowering the shit out of the Blueberries. Gotta find that perfect balance in the two without sacrificing too much of each.

2 points

by AlfredPuddingabout 7 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

I’m sorry to hear that, there are groups of people that have a hard time tasting certain flavors. Strawberry is another common one. There is usually a way to get around it, but I’m not sure what that is for blueberry recipes.

3 points

by blacksun2012about 7 years ago

I don't think that's the problem because I can taste other blueberry juices fine, i.e twinspired blueberry cheesecake, and blueberry The One

2 points

by AlfredPuddingabout 7 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

I should have been more specific, there are specific flavor concentrates that can be muted to some. In the recipes you provided for examples they most likely use a blueberry flavor you can taste more easily.

Try each blueberry separately? See if you have issues with one of them.

You are enough.

Personally, I’d try adding .2% sucralose to that.
