I yam who I Yam, Ube you: Flavor of the Week Goes back to its Roots
submitted about 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is... Roots: Ube/Yam/Taro

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

I'm excited for this one.

I used to vape Lion, by illuminati vapor, which was an ube custard. I've never been able to get anything close. Shame, cause ube is incredible.

I'm not familiar with Ube

Real ube tastes incredible. But real ube and anything you put it in is starchy AF. For this reason I'd think it fun to play with an essence of such.

You’re excited for the yams? Is that the same as taro?

No. Yams and Taro are not the same in real life. Don't know about artificial flavors, though

Kite in Cloud has K into N which contains a sweet potato flavor if anyone is looking for inspiration.

Couldn't figure out a taro pun?

Well, taro is a bit tough to figure out, so it makes sense.

Title would have been too long if I added another taroble pun

Toó late. Keeping him from making a Taro pun just wasn't in the cards.

Yuck , I hate sweet taters. If I could stand them though a sweet tater casserole like my mother makes would probably be a nice vape. It has a little orange and vanilla , brown sugar and pecans. I can almost tolerate it.

Edit: Oh and marshmallows

I'm really hoping that I can get close to mamasan's purple cheesecake (ube) this week! I've been waiting months for this FOTW!

So. I feel that mamasans purple cheesecake doesn’t caontain any taro or potato flavoring at all. I think the earthiness that we get from it comes from coconut flavorings. Tfa cheesecake graham crust and tfa coconut reel that in for me.

Thanks for those suggestions! I've noticed the coconut myself now & then. I'm going to add graham cracker and see if that gets me closer. I have CAP NY cheesecake, TFA graham cracker crust & FW creamy coconut. I pretty much figured out there's no yam or taro there. It's a pretty ambiguous flavor overall, the commercial name of it just adds to the mystery.

Then how does it get purple?

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

The juice isn't purple

The thumbnail at first looked like someone bending over awkwardly and in poor health (ie: very seriouse blood circulation issue and scars all over). Anyhoo....KISS MY YAM!!! :)
