Apple Custard
submitted about 7 years ago by GigaLumpinator

(Forgive mobile formatting)

This is the first recipe I’ve made that I feel proud enough to share. A custardy, rich apple pie filling, like someone took an Apple pie and blended it with vanilla coffee creamer.

Profiles: custard, fruit, cream, vanilla, apple

Apple Pie (TPA) 2%

A good filler, gives all those little hints that you would want in an Apple pie, such as cinnamon and nutmeg, maybe crust? And a light Apple.

Apple, Fuji (FA) 1.5%

The mainstay of the Apple, sweet and crisp, but not overwhelming enough to destroy the balance of the custard.

Custard (INAWERA) 2%

Whoever did the flavor review could have boiled it down to one word. Delicious. Gives a great custard flavor that contributes to the feeling of warm, half baked dough, with vanilla.

Meringue (FA). .15% (5 drops per 30 ml)

Serves as an emulsifier, wraps everything together with a sweet white sugar. Apologies for the drop descriptor, but that’s literally how I add it, by drops. If you want it to taste the way I make it, count ‘em!

Toasted Marshmallow (TPA). 1.5%

Gives that warm, sweet gooey goodness you need in an apple pie. I honestly think without this, you should toss the recipe in the trash. Adds to the vanilla, sweet, and gooey tones.

Apple Pie (TPA) 2%

Apple, Fuji (FA) 1.5%

Custard (INAWERA) 2%

Meringue (FA). .15% (5 drops per 30 ml)

Toasted Marshmallow (TPA). 1.5%

Recommended steep: minimum 3 days carried in your pocket in this bloody heat, give a week ideally. I haven’t even had a bottle make it to the 1 month mark yet.

Vaped on a Limitless RDTA, rayon, caterpillar SS coils, .20 ohms, 95 Watts.

Thank you everyone in this community, especially the flavor reviewers. This is me trying to give back. I would still be vaping sweetener riddled, 10x cost to make garbage without all of you. I hope you enjoy this one.

Extra thoughts: Hopefully this hasn’t miraculously copied someone’s recipe exactly, /paranoia

And yes, sub any of the flavors you like with other flavors, isn’t that the joy of DIY? Don’t ask me how to do it though, I guarantee you I’m useless!

Excellent work GigaLump - I'm the same - this sub and it's community rocks hard. Great recipe, I like how you use the INW Custard @ 2% - i see people using it at silly %'s (8-9% like they did with CAP VC V1). AND a 3-day steep too!! That's all thanks to the magic of INW Custard, being the fastest steeping custard that I know of.

I make a blueberry custard with the inw as well, which my brother adores. I initially picked it up in a flavorshare order I did with a local guy I met here on the sub, and knew I would need to get a full 30 of my own after the first mix!

I’ve been experimenting with how low I can push flavors recently, not for the savings in money, but the savings in my taste buds haha. I picked up the stuff to make a blueberry jam monster clone, and there’s no flavor in there under 7%. Cue two weeks of vape tongue. My biggest competitor atm is strawberry, I’ve got ripe and regular by tpa and I guess the ethyl Maltol or whatever they put in it is killer, because I whipped up an amazing smelling strawberry cupcake, that I completely couldn’t taste.

Thank you for your kind words, so far the reception has been leagues above the firing squad I was anticipating!

Strawberry seems to be a DIY oddball - in that most of them contain a lot of EM, and the more you add the less you taste. They can fade after only a few days. I now have 9 strawberry flavours - built up in the quest for the holy strawberry profile that I'm after in a vape.

Juicy strawberry FA seems to be the one for me.. All the others do exactly what you said but juicy strawberry stays true for weeks and weeks, in case you haven't tried it...

SOL Fraise and FM Strawberry don't get mentioned much but they have been my favorite for a while, just throwing this out there.

I shit you not, just walking in the door 5 minutes ago I had this thought. I would never try and pass someone else’s recipe off as my own, but I’d have to imagine at some point two people have made the same or very similar recipe without knowing.

I’d feel like a major douche canoe if that happened to me haha.

Edit: now that my ramblings are over- I don’t have toasted marshmallow and i have Cap Custard instead of INW but imma try this out and tack those flavors onto my order!

Extra thought: maybe a touch of Cinnamon Danish Swirl (there may be better cinnamons- that’s just my current concentrate lover) would be nice in there to get that cinnamony taste that apple pie has!

I could see similar recipes happening randomly, but exact copies without being ripped off I would think would be close to statistically impossible. So breathe easy, my friends.

I mainly lurk in these parts, occasionally drop a word or two!

Indeed it was, but it is what it is haha.

I happen to have a bit of CDS laying about, in my experience I tend to over do it and make the whole thing CDS, perhaps trace amounts could enhance the mouthfeel and taste, or a more respectable quantity after a decent steep to tame it. It’s an interesting suggestion, and god do I love cinnamon rolls. I’m still searching for the perfect raising cinnamon frosted roll recipe, I’m sure when I do find it I’ll have to make another flavor order haha.

The toasted marshmallow feels essential to me, but if you have a heavier, sweeter custard than inw I bet you’ll have something good on your hands without it.

And yeah, I was serious about the paranoia haha, you know how humans are, if two people invent the same thing two weeks apart, the first is a genius and the second a hack. Brian Sanderson is of the opinion that what humans value is not ingenuity, but novelty.

If you want a hint of cinnamon in a recipe that doesn't overpower - try between 0.75-1.25%. I find it starts to be domineering around 1.5-2.5%

I'll assume that "raising" should have been "raisin" and wish you luck with that. As for the cinnamon roll part itself, check out fresh's Cinna'Bunnelby. The amount of CDS controls the "bite"; the FW Cinnamon Roll is the actual bready bit.

flv apple filling would add that touch of cinnamon plus an excellent apple pie flavor.

My two favorite things, apple cinnamon and custard. I'll mix this up this weekend and try holding out for a week. Luckily I have some other stuff that'll be steeped soon to keep my occupied. How strong are the cinnamon notes from TPA Apple Pie? Have you though about adding a dash of CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl or FLV Rich Cinnamon?

The cinnamon is pretty mild, it’s mostly just a generic spice blend with a light apple. Minimal throat hit, one of the other guys here recommended cds around .75 I believe, haven’t tried it because my tongue is capricious with flavors, I vaped about 75 ml over two weeks and was starting to have difficulty tasting it, so I’m gonna try that in my next batch in a few weeks. I consider this recipe good enough to be a finished product, but I’m not against a v3 if someone else has the capacity to improve it. I’ve been reading that people have had issues with fading on the Fuji in other recipes, so try it at four days and see if you don’t like it then. It’s a remarkable quick steep, IME. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for the updoot!
