Weekly Questions/Discussion Thread - Week of August 6, 2018
submitted about 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page. If you’re a New Mixer check out the DIY Beginners Guide and the links below then feel free to ask about anything you’re still not clear on.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights from last week:

Last week was all about recipe reviews with /u/WykkydGaming dropping a review for “The Best Damm Strawberry” /u/AlfredPudding reviewing “Sadlad Toast Crunch” and /u/sc0lm00 giving us an impressive 13 recipe reviews in one post

In line with recipe review week /u/graystorm01 reminded us all about the Boomdog review writing contest which looks to be ending this Saturday--get your reviews in for a chance to win.

/u/hillidge told quite the dramatic tale about making a “UK Cheesecake”

“Straight out of Corporate E-liquid” was a thing. /u/kn0wnamez gave us a rundown of their credentials and history and a few recipes apparently from the glory days (2013) but feel free to PM them for more up-to-date recipes because… that’s not weird.

/u/matthewkocanda unsurprisingly used his 40th recipe post, with the title gore SIHTSTRII,IFIWPSTPEO to start some shit. And “fun” fact this is also the 40th time he hasn’t posted a recipe to the Monthly Recipe Thread! Love the guy but 3 years in and he never seemed to notice the “please post it here as well for posterity” SMH

INW probably has the most American pride out of anyone.

They’ve still got names like US Red Blend, US Light Blend, USA Blend, Classic America, and America Type. Just to make things more confusing like I know they like to do.

Edit: Side note, my order directly from Inawera.com got here in less than a week going with the air mail. Much faster than I thought it would go, and it was only like $5 or $6.

Did you get those flavors for your coco tobacco? I have to revisit all my notes because when I bought the bulk of my tobaccos this time around I still didn’t get everything. Maybe I’ll isolate which ones were INW if it is that affordable.

Oh and cross reference all the damn recipes I want to try that I don’t have like one flavor for, of course.

There's a cigarette brand called "USA", guessing that's where the name comes from?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but do most of the flavours have some sweetener in them?

I'm getting way more coil life out of juice I made with menthol crystals only compared to juice I've made with Capella Sweet Cream or Flavour Art Fuji Apple. I make my own coils, so it's kind of just laziness to want better coil life, but it's like 4 times more with menthol juice (3 squonk bottles vs less than 1).

It's kind of discouraging me from trying other flavours when I love menthol and just made a liter of menthol juice.

6 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

No. Most flavors have zero sweetener

I've seen someone mention that Capella flavors that have Sweet in the name generally include a small amount of some sweetener. I'm not sure how valid that is. Or if Capella has a list of ingredients in there flavors like TFA does to verify that.

3 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

Sweet Strawberry is going to contain EM. Its technically not a sweetener.

I still love the highlights and just want to say thank you. I know how much time it takes even for the simplest of posts. In diy stuff does take some time. It’s a nice reminder to go back and look at some conversations and see what’s been added. The links make that so much easier!

u/ChemicalBurnVictim what's your vape setup for your 'baccos? And any advise for a user who has had bad experiences with tobacco vapes? As in I love the taste of analog ryo/pipes/some cigars/shisha, but the juices I've tried (blue dot's NewPo and Ryo4) taste like an outdoor ashtray.

For the most part I use a Wotofo Conqueror Mini with some simple 26g kanthal coils. About .5 ohms at 30 watts. I’ve got two set up like that that I take to work with me, and 2 unopened just because I haven’t been satisfied with any other tanks and want to make sure I can always have one.

When I do MTL I use a Berserker Mini with a simple ass 26g 316L coil at about 17 Watts. I usually only use that around the house. MTL isn’t really my thing.

No tobacco experience outside of those? I’d suggest starting kind of small. Unfortunately, to get what I would consider a decent “tobacco starter pack” you’d have to order from two different places. Usually the FLV tobaccos are a bit more beginner friendly, and they’re good. So I’d maybe start off with Cured (not a huge fan personally, but it’s pretty popular), Red Burley, and Kentucky Blend.

If you like those, my second order suggestion would be to go to Vapers Tek and pick up INW Black for Pipe, Gold for Pipe, Tobacco Absolute Cuban Cigar, Tobacco Absolute Garuda, and Dark for Pipe. I’d also suggest getting some INW DNB, which you should be able to do on your first order as well unless you order direct from Flavorah. DNB is a really ashy flavor, but it’s kind of nasty in a good way. I have not tried either of the juices you mentioned, but I am going to make a guess that the ashtray taste you get from them is not going to be the same as the ash taste you will get from DNB.

by terracottapotpieabout 7 years ago

Word.

Kidding, thank you for your thoughtful response. I had figured most 'baccos would have been used on mtl devices such as the berserk which I've been eyeing, so good to know otherwise.

Yea, those are the only 2 I've tried as I was really put off by them. Although it was early in my vaping experience, not knowing 'baccos should be steeped well, and they were freshly made.

I'll go ahead and order a few of those you've mentioned, after scrubbing your history for some recipes.

Thanks again :)

Though I usually use multiple different tobaccos from all across the board, so mine might be a bit tricky to make from just your first order. Or even the next 7 orders haha.

Black honey tobacco/Juicy peach works pretty well together for me. BHT 6% - JP 3% (I added 3% Virginia fire cured tobacco by seedman) and .5% super sweet

1 points

by DreadPirateSnufflesabout 7 years ago

Do you get any clove-ish notes off of black honey?

1 points

by ChronicxCoughabout 7 years ago

Not that I have noticed but I gave it a test after stirring and again after about 48 hours and both times it’s been heavy sweet honey with tobacco peach left on my tongue on exhale. I haven’t noticed anything off with BHT and I’ve mixed maybe 1000 mL over the last few months

1 points

by DreadPirateSnufflesabout 7 years ago

Ah I see. I need to SFT it soon here. I mixed it with some INW AM4A and FE Captain and first I was getting some clove at first, but after an overnight steep I started getting a crazy bitter taste, like really bad, in my mouth. I haven't noticed that from AM4A before so I thought it might be black honey, but it's possible something in those flavors reacted together. Gonna do more testing but just

PSA: VT Red Dates seems like the closest thing I have found to INW Fortuna Strike pre-reformulation. Just mixed up an old ADV from a couple years ago with the Red Dates and it tastes pretty much exactly how I remember it. Maybe a bit less of a thick syrup sweetness, but the taste is pretty spot on.

Not that a lot of people were using the old Fortuna Strike, but it’s pretty exciting to me.

I have a problem with Chocolates, I have 2 brands and both tastes weird and not like chocolate in any way. They are from two Spanish companies and I don't know whst to do to use them. Tried to nix it with strawberry with no luck, thinking of mixing it with a bit of vainilla or menthol.

3 points

by Apexifiedabout 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Creams might help make them more palatable but ultimately most chocolate flavors just aren’t good.

1 points

by Bghislyabout 7 years ago

I feared that. I remember one of my first liquids was a Liqua chocolate and was sooo good I thought it was as easy as mix some base with flavor...But nope.

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

This is probably a case of picking flavors at random. TFA Double Chocolate Clear and FLV Milk Chocolate are both pretty good.

1 points

by Bghislyabout 7 years ago

Not at random, they are the only flavors available were I live. I bet at Madrid it's easier to get better brands, but not here.

Botboy's Key Lime Pie. I haven't mixed it in quite a while but I recall it being very good, maybe you can work some his magic into your cheesecake.

  • 1.70% FA Custard
  • 3% TFA Key Lime
  • 1% TFA Pie Crust
  • 2% TFA Cheesecake Graham Crust
  • .50% FA Lime Cold Pressed

Edit: I found his original post on it - you might find the discussion helpful

UK specific: is it worth it doing my own juice? I currently order from NovaVapes and it’s like £4 per 60ml all included.

I checked out Flavour Boss, but their concentrate mixes are quite expensive - around £11+ for 250ml worth of juice.

I really like ECR_EU, Grape and Sour Crush Candy from Nova. Any suggestions or ideas?

Sorry it’s a bit vague but I’m confused lol

2 points

by firefoxwhyyounoworkabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

If you have recipes that you like already it works out cheaper. Some of my mixes cost me £0.89 - £1.90 for 60 ml. But I also have loads of 72mg nicotine from before TPD so I don't ha e to pay for Nic shots.

So in short it could cost you less. But it can also cost you loads more as you go down the rabbit hole and start buying loads of concentrates to try new recipes and end up with 300 plus concentrates and still feel like you need more.

2 points

by kkodevabout 7 years ago

Thanks! 72mg nicotine is widely available on eBay for instance. I got a sample pack from Vapable along with 2l VG/PG, let’s see how it goes.

1 points

2 points

by garamasalaabout 7 years ago

It's hard to beat novavapes for cost but it would be cheaper to DIY, although probably not by a huge margin. As the others have said, it's potentially more expensive at the beginning when you have to put the money up for flavours, scales, bottles etc but will be cheaper in the long run. I think ECR_EU recipe might be available somewhere but I can't find it. But yeah, also it's a consideration about whether you would find recipes you're happy with. I'm sure you could but novavapes is quite high quality.

Also, unless my maths is wrong (most likely) the numbers you mention mean the flavourboss concentrates are much cheaper, 60mil equates to £2.60. I guess that is for a oneshot or bottleshot though so you would also need VG and nic. Not much difference though probably.

If you don't want to do full DIY then oneshots are certainly a cheaper middle ground than buying premade juice.

2 points

by Nathmonnabout 7 years ago

If you have the patience and time to suss out recipes, plus the initial costs to get set up I'd say do it. Every juice I've mixed up has been superior to anything I've tried from Novavapes. I've spent near £60 with them trying practically all their range (aside from the ice stuff) and maybe liked 1 juice, the rest I've either sent to redditors, given it away or its still on my shelf. Gutted as that £60 could get me a fair few flavor concentrates, a nice set of scales and loads of bottles.

1 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

Have you looked at Chef's Flavours UK? They have a lot of inexpensive one shots. I'd recommend the Ejuice Makers line as all of those folks are fantastic mixers. £6.25 for a 30ml and enough to make 200-240ml (dependant on the recommended mix %) of finished juice.

Suggestions for making a sweet high VG juice with no other flavors?

What are my options for the best sweeteners to try for a sweet 30/70 PG/VG blend. Something akin to eating a sugar cube but it doesn't have to be quite that intense.

I have some experience with DIY but currently have no DIY sweeteners in stock to try this myself. I do have Stevia liquid and powder, and Swerve and erythritol powder in the kitchen if those would work, but I'm skeptical that they would provide the type of sweetness I am looking for without aftertaste.

Thanks.

2 points

by leapinglabratsabout 7 years ago

Sucralose is what you want, but it does have a flavor. Then again, so does sugar.

It seems FW Sweetener or FLV Sweetener might be your best options, CAP Super Sweet if you can't get the others.

Check out the Flavor of the Week for sweeteners.

2 points

by luckyluckynsteinabout 7 years ago

Thank you!

2 points

by dontpanic4242about 7 years ago

Note that sweetener will be very hard on your coils. Some are harder than others. I remember seeing a test from a while back of someone doing a burn test on different sweeteners to see what kind of gunk is left behind. I think I remember Cap Super Sweet being one of the more gunky ones. I've also noticed the Cap SS tends to crystalize around the cap on the bottle, like little bits of sweetener stuck where the liquid evaporated.

Personally I find VG to be fairly sweet on its own if you drip that straight. But if you were diluting with PG that can add its own taste to it. I don't have much experience with other sweeteners but I've heard Fat Daddy's Sweetener is good for taste without producing a lot of gunk.

Edit: Referring to the sugar cube taste.. I've never tried Cap Super Sweet by itself but I did try a couple drops in a small glass of water and it was incredibly sweet. Very thick, sugary water taste. That may be what you're looking for.

2 points

by luckyluckynsteinabout 7 years ago

Based on replies, I'm start with straight VG with Nic and gradually add TFA Sweetener to see if I get what I am after. If that fails, I will repeat process with Cap Super Sweet.

Who knows, maybe straight VG will do the trick.

2 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Sugar Daddy sweetener (available from thebrokevaper.ca and chefsflavours.co.uk at least, maybe also somewhere else but no idea where else to try) is supposedly closest to sugar taste.

Does breathing 0mg ejuice help? Or does the lack of nicotine make it useless?

6 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

You don't need to breathe juice

1 points

by Blitz00about 7 years ago

Are you saying to vape 0mg? The flavor will be a little different but it is still imo the same flavor.

1 points

by Drvgon_lordabout 7 years ago

I meant the method of putting off the nipple of the bottle and letting air inside the mix. I've heard that it doesn't do much in terms of flavor.

3 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

It doesn't do anything good. It allows light flavor volatiles to escape, and thus changes the recipe somewhat unpredictably depending on what flavors were present.

2 points

by Blitz00about 7 years ago

You get the same effect as dropping percentages. I breathe mixes I made too strong. Works like a charm.

Anyone have a close mix to the Pacha Mama Fuji Apple?

I've never made my own but this is my favorite on the market and I'm looking to start saving some money.

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

If you want recipes for pre-made juice, make sure you post to the Clone thread instead. Unless you give us info about the juice with your question here, we have no idea how to help you with the recipe.

Googling the juice pops up with Pacha Mama Fuji Apple Strawberry Nectarine. If that's the same juice, you'll want:

  • JF or FA Fuji Apple

  • FA Red Touch Strawberry

  • JF Sweet Strawberry

  • TFA Nectarine

Unrelated topic but I have heard of some people using small wooden barrels for steeping juice. Pretty much the same barrels you would use for aging wine or whiskey, but small enough they hold a liter or two.

Has anyone tried mixing terpenes into their nicotine juice? I'd imagine a lot of the concentrated flavoring we all buy has terpenes in them... There are a few "strain-specific ejuice" products on the market but I haven't found any DIY recipes so just wanted to get a ballpark percentage.

I'm going to test it out at 1 drop per 5 or 10ml and go from there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

2 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

You may want to ask /u/abdada or /r/Deeper_DIY for that info. Terpenes are essentially basic flavor volatiles, and not something the majority of mixers would have.

It's against reddit's sitewide policy to have links to vendors that sell nicotine, so please edit that out and I'll approve the comment.

To answer you question; if you're actually shooting for a target of 60mg/ml with 100mg nic suspended in PG then yes, 60% of your mix will be your nic, so no less than 60% will be PG. The flavors are also PG based, so it increases the overall PG in the mix. You can't have more VG unless you either reduce the nic or flavor percentages or buy VG based nic.

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

There are some vendors that will sell nic with a blended base, as well, which would likely be a better idea than using pure VG base nic.

I'm making my annual flavor order (importing to Vietnam) and I'm at $90 before shipping (more than I'd like already) and I will have to pay a 30% tax on top of the overseas shipping which will be around $35+ (and taxes are applied to the product price+shipping costs). So it all adds up very, very fast.

I know this is a nitty question but I'm debating whether or not to buy INW Raspberry, I'm so hesitant because in my last flavor order I bought INW Grape and this flavor seems to be loved by so many. I've actually never read anything bad about, so many recs by people for a good grape flavor and part of the very popular Grack Juice. I ordered it from Nicotine River so I imagine nothing is wrong with my version, but I don't enjoy it at all. At 4% single flavor it tastes more like toothpaste to me than grape or purple, and combining it with other grapes and fruits has never worked out either. So basically I'm just worried INW Raspberry might turn out to be the same story for me, looking to hear any thoughts to convince to to buy it.

In my new order I'm getting stuff like the blueberry trinity, 6 new grapes, various berry's like tfa boysenberry/fa forest fruit/flv berry mix/flv cranberry/tfa pomegranate/tfa kiwi double and extra stuff like pixie sticks/sweet and tart/sour wizard/lemon Sicily. Writing this up feels kind of dumb and I will probably just buy it now and hope for the best lol, but it'd feel a lot better to be convinced.

1 points

by dontpanic4242about 7 years ago

I haven't yet tried INW Raspberry but I have it coming in an order that will be delivered today. I can try mixing up a small batch and getting back to you if you'd like. I really enjoy raspberry as a food but I've found when in a vape it can get very strong and kind of punches through other, taking them down.

Haven't actually tried INW Grape before either but that will be coming in on my flavor order today as well. Maybe the 4% you sampled it at was too high. Did you try lower percentages as well? Grape isn't my favorite flavor at all but I've been wanting to try Grack Juice. White Grape could be more of a flavor I enjoy but I don't think that's the profile that INW Grape is meant to give.

2 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Actually 3-4% INW Grapes is right where it tastes really purple. INW Raspberry Malina is very prone to going floral, it is very easy to get it to taste nothing like raspberry. But used correctly...

1 points

Hey thanks for the reply! Did you end up trying your grape or raspberry yet? If so I would be curious to know what you think!

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Before you order, head to chefsflavours.co.uk and chuck the same list of flavors in a basket there. Shipping will certainly be less. If the price of your order is close enough otherwise, that might be the way to go.

1 points

by fackyuuabout 7 years ago

Hey thanks a lot! It's kind of crazy because this site does offer a $6.50 outside the UK shipping option (no tracking) or much faster $12 option with tracking number. Wow, I wished a knew about this place 2+ years ago, oh my god.

I'm making a bigger order of other supplies from the US and going to use MyUS to have it all shipped over to me so at the moment including my flavors in this larger orders of stuff might be the best move. But I'm really surprised to see that Chefsflavours has pretty different prices compared to bullcity. INW and FLV are considerably cheaper on Chefsflavours while FA and TFA are considerably more expensive. Capella seem about the same and I didn't compare the others yet. Pretty interesting, maybe I'll hold off on my INW and FLV and make a Chefsflavour order later plus get a bunch of stuff. Oddly they don't carry 4oz version of FA Soho!

I also like that they carry Wrecka flavors and when I order from them I can FINALLY mix up some stuff from the monthly clone thread a while back on the Cush Man clone. Pretty excited for that! Overall I'm super pleased to have found out about this place due to their cheap and quick shipping. Big ups Juthinc! You really nailed it!

Buy "flavor creative" from chef's. The price works a bit better than the FA stuff.
