Weekly Questions/Discussion Thread - Week of July 23, 2018
submitted about 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page. If you’re a New Mixer check out some of the links below and feel free to ask about anything you’re still not clear on.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights from last week:

/u/xGRANITEx dropped another recipe on the front page with excellent development notes, as usual. Just finished off my bottle of Buttermilk Pie and am looking forward to mixing up his latest creation.

/u/isuamadog shared their first recipe “Arnold Plumber” and the journey they took developing it. Interesting read and an interesting recipe, too.

/u/INTERLINKED was kind enough to announce the presence of our Official Discord server and it blew up, quadrupling the number of people there and bringing some life and chatter to the place. Come introduce yourself!

/u/KarmaChameleon89 gave us an update on their progress and thanked all the fine folks in the sub who helped them. While I’d prefer we discuss things like that here, in this thread, your votes are what matter.

/u/c5b4c91772c729fc7d0a is still going strong with the Weekly “What are you vaping?” Thread after 9 weeks in a row. They’re fun posts to read through and full of recipes to try. Thanks for the great idea, c5, you’re officially a Valued Community Contributor.

/u/nox_mani put together a helpful spreadsheet with a list of all the INW tobacco flavors you can get from VapersTek that BCF no longer carries.

And last, but certainly not least, I’d like to shoutout everyone who answered questions here in the questions/discussion thread last week--you’re all awesome and appreciated.

We have an official Discord server if anyone wants to join and chat: https://discord.gg/ufVTyAQ

Looks like /u/concreteriver is back to posting flavor review videos: Vape Train Melons

Cool, thanks for posting, i thought he stopped completely.

by isuamadogabout 7 years ago

Which reminds me, there were so few reviews for the tobacco flavors in the flavor wiki. I’m going to look over the spreadsheet and see which ones I have. I’d be willing to do SFTs for those and have a few steeping at 3%. But not sure my amateurish palette can pick up on nuances or will know what to pair it with.

by ChemicalBurnVictimabout 7 years agoresident tobacco expert

Now I feel all guilty and stuff because I’ve tried them all (well, most. I skip on the things like tobacco strawberry, pear, and mint stuff). I just don’t find I usually have enough to say to fill out a whole review. If it’d help, I can go to the post and make a parent comment with some quick notes for each flavor that is lacking a review, and then you could permalink to that comment.

1 points

by isuamadogabout 7 years ago

Honestly I only have a few of the ones that are missing. I’d taste one on the dripper then make a few words of notes. Then I’d go read the review. Usually my notes were about 50% on and the rest was great info on pairing and uses. Mace, whiskey, whomever.

That was encouraging as well as informative. I love the standardization info but the gist is good enough.

Side note: I also find myself googling the tobacco terms to learn them to even know what the damn names even refer to. Idk what the eff cavendish, Turkish, orientals, shades, Burleys are supposed to taste like. I just try them to see if I like them. I have no idea. How to even mix them? Is there some established way of blending real tobaccos?

2 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Well, 'shade' usually refers to Connecticut shade, which is one of the most popular choices for a cigar wrapper. The problem is, cigar wrappers are sometimes described by variety (ie: Connecticut Shade) and sometimes by style (ie: Maduro). Typically, varieties are named geographically (another common wrapper is a Cameroon) but then there's the issue of where the variety was grown... it's quite complex, and makes cigar snobs almost as obtuse as wine snobs.

The established way of blending real tobaccos is much like mixing: find the flavor profile of tobacco A; try to find a tobacco B (and possibly C and maybe D) that has a flavor profile that complements what's already in the mix. So maybe it's more like trying to mix a juice with multiple concentrates, only all you have to work with is one-shots, since tobaccos are always complex.

What am I doing wrong? Please help me 🙏 I’m new to mixing but I really want to learn how to mix a nice juice. I only have a couple of flavors, TFA Butterscotch, TFA Vanilla Swirl, Capella Caramel and Flavorah Cookie Dough.

I have tried to mix juices with only one flavor, for example: Capella Caramel 2.5%, VG and Nicotine. I steeped it for 6-7 weeks but there is no flavor at all when I vape it. I have also been trying to mix my other flavors but with the same result, no flavor or maybe a little flavor.

I have also tried to mix for example: TFA Butterscotch 10% TFA Vanilla Swirl 10% VG Nicotine Steeped about a month. This time I got better flavor but after vaping 10-15 hits the flavor is gone again.

Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong? Is it even possible to make a juice with only one flavor?

I’m thankful for your help and advice

by ChemicalBurnVictimabout 7 years agoresident tobacco expert

Where are you getting your percentages?

Both Vanilla Swirl and Butterscotch contain Ethyl Maltol, which will mute flavors if you have too much in your final mix. Those two flavors are typically used at 3% or less. Using both at 10% is going to do two things: introduce more Ethyl Maltol than you want to your juice, and fatigue your tongue really fast because you’re just throwing too much flavor at it at once. That’s why you are getting ok flavor for a few hits, then it’s gone. Try those two closer to 2-3% and see if that helps. Seems counterintuitive to drop the percentages to get more flavors, but it should help.

Also might be your setup. Are you using a Smok TFV Big Bitch 9 coil tank? Super airy cloud tanks aren’t going to be the best thing for actually tasting your flavors.

For the CAP Caramel, your concentration seems fine, but it could just be a flavor you don’t really taste. I also have trouble tasting some caramel flavors.

Use ATF flavor search to find your flavors and check out the average mixing % to get a ballpark idea of where to start with a flavor. I will usually sort the recipes by rating and look through the top few to see how they used them as well.

1 points

by nikkeolson81about 7 years ago

Thanks! I will try to drop the % and see if it’s getting better! I don’t know where I found the %. And my setups is always some RDA with dual or single coil and the resistance of my builds use to end up at 0.1-0.2 ohms. That’s how I like my builds, but maybe I should try to vape with a tank for a while and see if I’m getting more flavor. Thank you very much for your tips and advice!

by garamasalaabout 7 years ago

It's very possible to make a juice with one flavour. Your issue sounds a bit odd. Cap could probably be higher as a single flavour Ibut I haven't tried that one. That said, in general i don't find caramel to be a particularly forward flavour. I think more details might be needed though, what are you vaping with and what PG/VG ratio?

1 points

by nikkeolson81about 7 years ago

I like to vape with 70 VG or even more. I don’t know why but I have a big bottle of VG and also nicotine that is VG based. So when I buy for example a DIY mix (already mixed flavors) I just add VG and nicotine so the VG level gets pretty high. Well the flavors are PG based so I get a little PG but that’s all.

1 points

by nikkeolson81about 7 years ago

Do you think that I will increase the flavor if I’m adding more PG and less VG? Maybe I should try to make a mix with 50/50-VG/PG

1 points

by garamasalaabout 7 years ago

I haven't noticed a huge difference in that respect. PG is rough on my throat (makes me feel like I need to clear it constantly) and 50/50 in a sub ohm tank/dripper is not very pleasurable. You can try though, you might like it that way.

1 points

by leapinglabratsabout 7 years ago

Finding your preference and making tasty juice requires more flavors than that or a bit of research into the flavors you get. You won't make anything great with what you have and I wouldn't vape any of those solo.

1 points

by nikkeolson81about 7 years ago

Ok thanks for your tips! I guess I will have to do some research and buy some more flavors then. As I said I’m a newbie and don’t know shit about mixing.

Anyone got any favourite amaretto flavours?

I'm looking for something close to Disaronno amaretto, if such a concentrate/combination of concentrates exists.

Maybe:

https://shop.savapeur.com/en/diy-flavors/baker-flavors-c66c71/

These guys carry the brand (Baker Flavors and SC Gourmet are the same company), but don't have Almond. You can try asking them if they'll carry Almond. You might also be able to order them from Baker Flavors directly (Russian company), I'm not sure.

Edit: That company is in Quebec but maybe they'll ship it to you?

Is there anyplace that has a list of "sticky Flavours"? By sticky flavours, i mean ones that will stick to your coils. I was working a a recipe last night, and made the mistake of adding polar blast and ws-23 to my first attempt. On my second attempt, i removed them to work on getting the flavours right first, but my new coils were already permanently cooled. So i had to throw it out.

Also, one other question, which bottles are better for using multiple times, LDPE or PET?

3 points

by amouthforwarabout 7 years ago

Typically you can drip some plain vg and vape thru that for a few rounds and by the third or fourth drip and vape cycle it should have cleared out almost all of the previous flavor, even ws-23.

1 points

by graystorm01about 7 years ago

ok. thanks for the tip.

If you're not already, I'd recommend using an RDA for testing recipes. Worst case you can re-wick it if a flavor is lingering.

So i have 100mg of flavorless nic

So i used the calculator to get a strength of 9mg and im making 30mls total.

The calculator says i add 2.7mls of the nic,12.30 of PG/VG and 15mls of doubler/ concentrate then i let it steep?

What's a good percentage to start at for FE Green Tea or FA Black Tea?

I’ve enjoyed fa Black tea at 1.5 or 1.75.

.1% is a reasonable starting point. Increase slowly until you find what you like.

2 points

by KarmaChameleon89about 7 years ago

Out of curiosity, do many of you have solo flavours that you enjoy? I know with a dash of something else it can make the flavour even better, but is there one flavour that you make up and think is ideal as a solo act?

6 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Menthol. (It's good for clearing the palate.)

FLV Red Burley

LA Lemonade (although I'd always add a cooling agent)

INW Grapes (also better with cooling. warm purple doesn't taste as good as cold purple)

FA Fuji

1 points

by _grendelabout 7 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

+1 for cold purple. What % on the Red Burley solo?

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Depends. You steeping it a month, or SnV? 1.5-2% for the latter, 2.5-3% for the former.

2 points

by ID10-Tabout 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

FLV Pink Guava is my favorite for this. 3% would overpower just about any mix, but it makes for a great tasting single flavor that I can vape all day and do when my palate is tried of picking apart recipe attempts and trying to figure out how to fix or improve them.

It's called a Pink Guavacation.

FLV Mango is another one.

It's been a long time and I don't think either hold a candle to Pink Guava or Mango, but I used to enjoy doing this with FA Fuji and FA Marzipan.

1 points

by SmoothVillanoabout 7 years ago

Yes, i have a few actually that are pretty damn good as solo flavors.

-FLV Mango.

-TFA Juicy Peach.

-FA Forest Fruit.

-CAP Vanilla Custard.

-CAP Sugar Cookie.

-INW Grape.

-FA Pazzo King.

I tried 10% juicy peach, I wonder if that's why it tastes like ass?

1 points

That's way too high for Juicy Peach. Try it at 3%, should be a lot less floral/soapy.

1 points

by SnackalackaSmashabout 7 years ago

What % do you mix the grape and peach at?

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

INW Grapes is good around 3-4%.

1 points

TFA Juicy Peach at 5-8% as a standalone is pretty good. If you wanna go a little crazy 3%FLV Mango with 2.5% TFA Juicy Peach is solid.

Another question regarding syringes etc.

I have a specific nic, vg and pg syringe but instead of having 1 syringe per flavour I tend to just cycle round the 4 spare ones I have.

I clean them all about once a week depending on how much I use them but with flavours is it best to use clean syringes for each flavour then clean them after?

4 points

by lNTERLINKEDabout 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

I would probably only have specific syringes for certain flavours that adhere to plastic particularly well.

Examples of these would be coffee and menthol flavours, which tend to taint a syringe.

Best of all, would be to use a scale and drip flavours directly into whatever you're mixing in.

1 points

by KarmaChameleon89about 7 years ago

I use syringes but is a scale better?0

3 points

by lNTERLINKEDabout 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

Definitely. They are more accurate, mixing is less messy, cleaner and quicker. Treat yourself and get a scale.

Make sure it goes down to 0.01g and can weigh up to 500g.

4 points

by leapinglabratsabout 7 years ago

Moving a syringe/pipette from one concentrate to another is a great way to ruin them through cross contamination. Either keep a dedicated for each one, clean them out before each use or get proper dripper bottles, the latter of course being preferred but requires a scale.

2 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

With syringes, it is best to throw them in the garbage and just use a scale. That way there's no crosscontamination, and better yet it doesn't require you to be a Molly Maid, plus it's faster and more accurate.

1 points

by W8_4Uabout 7 years ago

Mixing with a syringes is not a way to live. With scale 100ml of Juice containing 8 aromas takes about 5-10 minutes to mix, and there is no clean up afterwards.

1 points

by KarmaChameleon89about 7 years ago

O make 30 ml batches since its just for my fiance and I

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoमैंगो कस्टर्ड

Still. I've mixed a 30ml bottle in maybe 3 minutes using a scale. And that only because I was using VG based nic. I also mixed a 30ml bottle in 50 seconds once... but I was using 6% of a premixed concentrate (recipe made using just flavorings) and a premixed base I made for recipes calling for 6% flavoring.

1 points

by lupCheongabout 7 years ago

Like what others have said, cycling around syringes is the best way to contaminate your flavours. I use one syringe for flavors along with a scale and I flush it multiple times with water from a bowl after each flavour. I swing the syringe violently to get the residual water out before using for another flavour. It gets flushed and swung till relatively dry again when I finish my mixing session and stored tip down in a bottle with a crushed up paper towel. The syringe is usually dry for my next mixing session.

I've used the same syringe over tons of mixing sessions with no issues but am probably going to switch it out as soon as the rubber plunger starts deteriorating. Hope this helps.

1 points

by KarmaChameleon89about 7 years ago

Yeah so what I do atm is try to keep a syringe for each flavour. I have about 5 for flavours. And I keep a cup of hot water for flushing next to me. However I just made 10 different juices, the ones my fiance and I like the most I'll be making large batches of.

Basically I try to keep one per flavour, and obviously pg, vg and nicotine all have their own syringes that never get used for anything else.

I realise weight is probably more accurate, however I don't have access to a 0.01g capable scale and can't afford one right now. So for now I'll rely on my syringes lol.

1 points

by lupCheongabout 7 years ago

You should really get that scale soon. Even a small 500g max weight jeweller's scale which measures in 0.01g increments would be better than no scale at all. The syringes aren't accurate at all. I've measured exactly 0.6ml in a syringe but it comes out way over the corresponding weight in the recipe when I push it into the mix, not to mention syringes don't have 0.01ml increments too. This is obviously bad when you're dealing with nic. Get that scale!

I'm using this with good results - https://www.qoo10.sg/item/NEW-ELECTRONIC-WEIGHING-DIGITAL-SCALE-500GX0-01G/412268685?

Trying to make a MintBerry Crunch juice. I have the power of mint and berries, but what can I use to get a satisfying, tasty crunch?

Currently at

Out of curiosity what kind of bottle do most of you use to transfer large amounts of pg and vg into the juice your currently making instead of just using a dropper to transfer

3 points

by leapinglabratsabout 7 years ago

Can't speak for most of us, but the best solution is some kind of condiment bottle. I have a regular 1 liter LDPE with a pouring cap, filled with premixed 70/30 VG/PG that I just top off the bottles with after adding flavors and nic.

If my large amounts, you mean bigger than 100 ml batches, you probably want gallon jugs with some kind of push/twist valve.

i do what /u/isuamadog does for the most part. I have the big gallon jug, i decant that into a liter jug that has the foil barely peeled back so it's almost like a spout and fill larger bottles (60ml+) with that no problem. For smaller bottles of juice I have a 120ml bullet bottle with the twist cap that I can fill like 10-30ml bottles with easily.

So I am looking for a good place for Nicotine salts, last time I ordered from Nicotine River, went with 48mg in smooth hit. Thing is I am just about out and maybe I didn't notice it(I do 3/6mg juices) in the juices or maybe it just happened but something made me smell the solution and it smells sorta like gasoline and burnt rubber.

This was from a batch 2-3 months ago, is that smell normal? Is it safe? Anyways...

Trying to replicate MtBakerVapor's "Dream Tea".

I ordered FW Green Tea, FW White Peach, FW Mango (Natural), and FW Hibiscus.

What are good percentages to mix these flavors at?

3 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

Mt Baker is really ham handed. It's probably easy like:

  • 4% Green Tea
  • 5% Mango
  • 5% White Peach
  • 2% Hibiscus

This is just a guess though. I don't have nor have I ever used any of these Flavor West flavors. You can build a better mix using [FE Green Tea] (https://alltheflavors.com/flavors/flavors-express-green-tea), [FLV Lemon Tea] (https://alltheflavors.com/flavors/flavorah-lemon-tea), or [FA Black Tea] (https://alltheflavors.com/flavors/flavourart-tea-black-water-soluble). There are a lot of good recipes at those links.

u/ID10-T has a [Mango Iced Tea recipe] (https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/20684#mango_iced_tea_by_id10_t) that looks really good.

by ID10-Tabout 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I need to revisit that one. That Mango Iced Tea was the last thing I ever made that used Koolada. Shortly after that I tried FA Polar Blast and then WS-23. I'll probably never use Koolada again.

Can't help OP though because I've Mango Natural is the only one of those FW flavors I've tried, too. Hell, I didn't even know the other three existed, I can't remember seeing a recipe that's used them.

Have you tried FLV Eisai Tea?

FW aren't the best...

They might not be the best, but they're cheap. Right now I'm vaping a Hawk Sauce clone made from FW Blackberry, Raspberry, and Junglejuice. To be perfect, it also needs FA Sour Wizard, but shipping from Italy is taking a very long time (I don't know how you guys deal with it).

Not sure where the flack is coming from. Haven't had any problems with FW.

FA stuff, I mostly order from chefsflavours.co.uk (fuck FANA) but typically vendors outside of Italy stock their stuff, so there's little waiting. I've never ordered direct from Italy. Direct from Poland, yes. Direct from France, yes. I've also ordered from Quebec, from murica, and from Canada. Other than the shipping cost, I would say Poland was one of the best.

I'd really look at FLV Hibiscus. Good stuff, use it at low percentage (like 0.5-0.75% for me).

In u/project_twenty5oh1 nanner bear clone he talks about using a heated magnetic stirrer to finish the batch, mentioning the fact that after the heated stirring the juice doesn't gunk coils. When I make it I do not use the stirrer, and it is ready to go after 3-4 weeks. The flavor is the same as Prairie, but it gunky coils after a few days. Do you guys think making a base and 'cooking' it like he did would achieve the same effect as 'cooking' the finished juice, lessening the gun king? The way he did it also changes the color, making it noticeably darker as well.

I don't see how any amount of heating or stirring would change coil gunking, as that is caused by heavier compounds. Since they don't vaporize, they leave residue behind that builds up, leading to gunk. Unless we're talking heat that oxidizes the juice, which actually would be responsible for the darker color, but then you're vaping cancer. Either way, heating isn't recommended.

A magnetic stirrer would oxidize the nic even without heat. It constantly moves the nic in the solution to expose as much of it as possible to the air...

Also true. I think the main problem with stirrers is that people drastically overdo it. A couple of minutes is all you need even at max VG.

Hello there 🙋

I was browsing ATF and noticed that aromas of some manufacturers are used in none of recipes.

Not a single recipe contains Smoke Kitchen or GoodDrim flavorings. I wonder if those are outclassed or are they bad to mix with more traditional flavorings, such as FW FA TPA etc?

I'm planing on adding Smoke Kitchen(SK) Brandy to some of my ice cream and soda bases.

It had really believable brandy flavor when used as mono flavor, I can say the same about (SK) Banana and (SK) Peanuts.

What is the deal with those aromas?

Never seen them carried by any vendor I've bought from...

Can you provide info on where to find these? A Google search returns nothing. Smoke kitchen has finished juice but I can't find concentrated flavoring.

Online shops on their official webpage. Only western europe apparently 0:

This would be why. Most of us aren't going to have access to these.

Most people won't go out of their way to buy stuff that's not carried by their usual vendors. It's the same with Medicine Flower and DIYFS, even though they have some good flavors.

If I were to buy 30ml of nic salts does it have to be kept in a freezer? I'm not really able to do that and it's pretty hot where I am at the moment so I'm a bit concerned about it going bad.

A dry, cool place that gets no light is best if you don't have a fridge/freezer available. It's not the best but it will do.

Hello! So uhm, I bought TFA RY4, TFA Cowboy Blend and TFA Butterscotch flavors, and now I want to get some pairing flavors to add to them, do any of you know any good recipes or good pairings for them?

Do you mean TFA Western, or Flavour Art Cowboy Blend? If it’s Flavour Art, are all of your flavors from that brand?

by JoyLudsabout 7 years ago

Yeah, it's FA Cowboy Blend. Only my RY4 is TFA.

FLV Red Burley. I've not run into many tobacco flavors or tobacco additives that don't work with it.

INW Dirty Neutral Base is a must for tobacco, IMO.

Trying to replicate 'Rhino Stump' by Charlie's Chalk Dust. Can't pinpoint the flavors in this juice.

Any suggestions?

You mean like ginger, etc. ... or specific concentrates?

The general flavor profile to replicate.

Ok, so... basically, reviews describe it as basically a complex ginger beer. So... I'm thinking you'd want a syrupy ginger, tiny amounts of clove and/or hot cinnamon, and something like VT Fizzy Sherbet, maybe some INW Cactus.

Buy all the gingers you can find and start tasting.
