Weekly Discussion Thread - Week of July 9, 2018
submitted about 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page.

  • Want to show off your most recent or first flavor order?

  • Found a cool new way to organize your flavors?

  • Shout out a mixer here who helped you get started?

  • Theorycraft an idea for a mix?

  • Talk about your DIY journey thus far?

  • Haven’t started DIY yet and want to talk about it?

And pretty much anything else… anything goes, even if it’s only mixing related because you mix and want to chat with other mixers.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly New Mixers Thread - This has been and will remain the ‘Safe Zone’ for any beginner questions. While it was once the place you posted after your post was [removed] or after a Mod/Sidebar-nazi directed you there, the New Mixers Thread remains an absolute judgement free zone where there are no stupid questions and everyone there wants to help.

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights From Last Week:

/u/ece_guy hit us with a "Classic Recipes" request and /u/penatbater summed up the thread with the top comment.

/u/ID10-T rehashed Essential Equipment with the help of /u/leapinglabrats and a myriad of solid suggestions in the comments.

/u/akatash23 was looking to step up his single flavor testing and recipe development game and /u/bassmutt came to the rescue with the obvious but often overlooked "drip some VG on your cotton between flavor changes"

/u/Bghisly traumatized his children with cheesecake clouds.

/u/omgcomeonidiot professed their love for WS-23 while giving no love to my remix of strap-on :(

And, oddly enough, only 1 recipe made it to the front page last week from /u/nstant404 -- Twisted "Berry" Lemonade

Several questions came up last week about harsh juice: Troubleshooting Harsh Juice is worth a read if you find yourself with that problem.

My uncle used to drive a truck (still might, not sure. Kind of a piece of shit) and he used to live with my grandma. This meant two things: he was hardly ever home, and I had easy access to his room. Curious lad that I was, I naturally spent a lot of time snooping through his room. I found the holy grail in a large cedar chest in the corner of his room. Best I can figure, he spent a good chunk of money in the late 80’s and early 90’s on porno mags. So many porno mags, so little time. The thing about it was that they’d spent so much time in that cedar chest that they all smelled like cedar. Very distinct smell.

What’s all this got to do with this sub? Well, just got some new flavors in and mixed up a test batch of Euro Flavor American Blend Blue, and boy does it bring back some memories. Smells and tastes just like that old cedar chest. Maybe a little bit of sandalwood, but mostly cedar. Doesn’t really taste like a light cigarette, which is what they lead you to believe, but it’s still pretty interesting.

Well, i bought my first order last week, 23 flavours, and now, i already have a new list of about a dozen new flavours i want. My first order was based on a combo of the top first flavours listed here and the most used flavours on ALF, and a few recipes i picked out. Thought i had a good first order, but now i realize, the most used flavours tend to be "helper" flavours. So, most of the stuff i have requires steeping or other flavours to compliment those helpers, and i don't have much to make SNV. Now, i'm trying to round out my fruity flavours, with things like the holy trinity of blueberry, juicy peach, FA pear, a good watermelon, Pineapple combo of INW & CAP Golden, Raspberry, FA lemon sicily to round out my LOR Lemonade, Any specific recommendations would be appreciated

2 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

INW Lemon Mix to go with the lemonade in place of lemon Sicily (fuck FANA). INW Grapes
WS-23
FA Polar Blast (buy the "flavor creative" from chefsflavours.co.uk because it's cheaper, and fuck FANA.)
FA Blackcurrant (see above.)
TFA Blackberry
TFA Cranberry
FLV Cranberry
INW Shisha Orange

That should give you a good assortment of SnV possibilities - CranOrange, CranGrape, Purple Lemonade, Purple freezie, orange popsicle, a good berry blend (if you already have a raspberry flavor, along with the trinity, the blackcurrant, blackberry and cranberries is all you need. Maybe a touch of cactus and some cooling)... lots of possibilities.

In addition to what you're already planning on getting

  • FLV Mango
  • Where are you buying these flavors from? Regardless they are probably better options for peach than TFA or CAP Juicy Peach.
  • Candy watermelon or natural watermelon?
  • Which Raspberry are you getting and why? Is there a specific recipe in mind or are you just wanting a raspberry to play with?

by graystorm01about 7 years ago

Honestly, not sure where i'm going, probably Nicotine River, since my first order with them went so well (arrived 2 days ahead of expected arrival), but i'm fine ordering from wherever. I don't know which peach to get, but going for a natural peach flavour, even if that means using 2 different peaches. With watermelon, its the same, looking for a more natural, sweet watermelon. As far a raspberry goes, i was planning on getting TPA Sweet Raspberry so i can make "Best Damn Pink Lemonade" by Vurve. Will definitely add FLV Mango to the list.

EDIT: Theres one thing i keep forgetting, I want a cooling effect, but not ure which one(s) to get, i see a lot of people using WS-23, and others using Koolada.

2 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

WS-23 is more versatile. But both it and koolada together (Or FA Polar Blast, which is a improved koolada) make for even better cooling. And if you can, add INW Raspberry (it mixes with the TFA raspberry sweet, just stay below 1% with the inw if you don't want to vape cologne.)

  • Nicotine River means no yummy JF Honey Peach but that's ok. You can pick up either INW Peach or FLV Peach. I recommend finding a recipe or two that uses them and looks interesting to you and getting the stuff you need to make those.

  • I think the best watermelon you can buy is the Tastemaker's Water Malone from Liquid Barn but if you're ordering from Nicotine River, there are a number of great, more natural watermelons to choose from: FLV, FA, INW. You could even get the ingredients to make Water Malone yourself rather than buying the one-shot from LB. Steer clear of CAP, TFA, LA, and PUR if you're looking for a watermelon that's both good and natural.

  • That's a good enough reason to buy TFA Sweet Raspberry, and I'm sure you'll find plenty of other uses for it.

  • WS-23 or FA Polar Blast or better yet, both.

Hello, i recently bought a 1L pre mixed bottle of 70/30 pg, (starting out new) and i have some questions as i am new to this and would love for some help!

  1. Is it okay to use the pre mix 70/30 PG?

  2. Is all i need flavoring, and nicotine (optional)

  3. how long would a 10ML flavoring last? (10-15%)

  4. Whats a good basic recipe to start off with, Im seeing online that there most receipes use 4-5 flavourings, is it a bad idea to use one?

  5. Can I empty out old juices and reuse the bottles, as well is a syringe good enough to measure %, id rather use that than a scale!

  6. Whats a good cheap flavouring company, are there any ones to avoid (UK)

  7. Is this a good start of receipe

  • 70/30 PG VG
  • Energy Drink Flavoring (10~15%)
  • Nicotine (Optional)

Thank you, if you can only answer some of the questions that will still help!

Thank you!

  1. Yes but there are cons

  2. Also, yes.

  3. 80-100ml

  4. One you have the flavors for. Single flavors rarely make something satisfying but taste is subjective and you could get lucky. Or read about Simple Recipes or buy oneshots.

  5. This is two different questions with one number :P
Yes, reusing bottles is fine. Syringes are... inconvenient but also fine. Scale vs Syringe is a topic I covered, if you're interested.

  6. Chefs is good

  7. Depends on who makes Energy Drink Flavoring.

2 points

by Kroliver14about 7 years agoMixologist

Imho

  1. Yes, but you cant change the pg/vg to match your preferences
  2. Yes
  3. At 10% you could make 100ml, at 15% you can make about 65ml
  4. Single flavors lack depth in the flavor, however sometimes they work. 5a. You can resue bottles i rinse them out the rinse them with rubbing alchol and let dry overnight. Plastic bottles are harder to get rid of the old flavor, while glass doesnt hold the old flavor as well 5b. Syringes are fine for starting but if you want to become more accurate with your mixes and mix in larger scale then you want to be mixing by weight.
  5. Cant help you im in the states
  6. Not familiar with that flavor

Rainbowvapes is one of the most economical, free postage over £10. You also get a freebie. Don't know any to avoid, most seem to be quite reputable here, it's just a case of balancing delivery costs.

/u/playingfromtherough how'd that recipe turn out?

1 points

by playingfromtheroughabout 7 years ago

I've only tried a little bit of it but it's definitely vapeable. Personally, it's too sweet for it to be an ADV for me as is - But, it's good and has a clean taste to me. I'll leave it as is for now and see if I develop more of a taste for it when I use more of it.

I was making about 500ml of a Honey Pearry clone when I accidentally flip flopped the percentages of pear and strawberry. 1% - Honeydew 3% - Honeysuckle 6% - Strawberry 3% - Pear

I wanted to share a root beer recipe I whipped up yesterday as soon as my order came in. This is my first attempt, although I researched average flavor uses and flavor notes here on Reddit prior. I am loving it and I think it's pretty good- but any notes or advice would be very welcome :)

FLV Root Beer 2%

CAP Root Beer 3%

RF SC Soda Base 1%

VT Creaming Soda 1%

CAP Super Sweet .75%

WS-23 (30% Sol.) .35%

(Optional- Vanillin (10%) .25%

This is much sweeter than I normally mix my juices, but I'm going for a soda so why not right? I don't have much experience with RF Soda Base or VT Creaming Soda since they both arrived in the same order. I didn't want it to be too harsh from the soda base, though someone did recommend upping it to 2-2.5%, and I was a bit tentative to go higher with VT Creaming Soda as the concentrate is like pitch black. Again any thoughts would be great!

by thelateoctoberabout 7 years ago

Could you help me understand how to do the math when using a pre mixed concentrate base? For example, what I mix the most of is the famous nanner bear clone, at 18.8% flavoring. I mix at 6mg, 70/30 ratio. I'm sure it is simple, but I can't figure out how much or the weight of what to add. I have ATF and ELR but mainly use ATF.

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Premixed flavors? Simple.

Assuming 100ml...
18.8g flavor mix
72.45g VG
15.6g 48mg/ml VG nic
12.63g PEG400 or 11.87g PDO or 11.6g PG

so, for a batch of size Xml:
.188Xg flavor mix
.7245Xg VG
.156Xg VG nic
.1263Xg PEG400 or .1187Xg PDO or .116Xg PG

or...
.188Xg flavor mix
.882Xg VG
.062Xg PG nic
.0585Xg PEG400 or .0551Xg PDO or .0539Xg PG

Hi. Has anyone noticed a change in the pg at NicRiver? I usually buy a liter at a time, but just got a gallon and noticed a smell I've never noticed before, and it tastes pretty funky by itself. I'm still on my juice made with previous batch, so I don't know if it tastes off in juice or not. I've been making juice for over 3 years, and have never come across this. Just wondering if a strong smell is still within tolerance for PG and if anyone has experienced this, or knows what could cause this. It's an extremely strong smell. Thanks. (edit: I have sent an email, but it's too late to expect a response tonight)

update: they are looking in to it and sending a replacement in the meantime.

by leapinglabratsabout 7 years ago

It shouldn't smell much of anything, it has probably been mistreated. I wouldn't vape that as some of the byproducts of oxidation are carcinogenic, if that is what has happened.

https://dowac.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7485/~/propylene-glycols---stability-%26-storage
"A strong odor, higher acidity, higher ultra-violet (UV)-absorption or high color are indicators that a propylene glycol has been not been stored properly and has started to degrade."

1 points

by imNAchogrlabout 7 years agoKooky

I’ve never smelled my pg I would think it’s spoiled somehow...probably the heat uugh.

1 points

by sixfiveliveabout 7 years ago

Yeah, it was in the mail like 5 days. I've never had this happen with pg before though. I do try to avoid buying nic in the summer if I can help it.

1 points

by dontpanic4242about 7 years ago

I've never had it happen with pg. But I did have an issue with NicRiver and some nicotine that was no good. I've made several posts about it in this thread.

The person I talked to at NicRiver basically told me the only way it could have been bad was improper storage and they would replace it because "I didn't know that nicotine must be kept in the freezer". My storage conditions have been fine for other bottles of nic which lasted around a year while being used. And I didn't really like the implication that it was entirely due to my storage location. The more I think about it, the more I feel it was high heat during shipping.

The only thing I can come up with was heat during shipping. Not sure where you live and which method you used for shipping. But I know the trucks aren't generally air conditioned and its very possible your pg was subject to high temperatures during transit. I have definitely had multiple occasions where I open a package and the bottles are very warm to the touch.

I've got a bottle of nicotine from NicRiver that I bought a couple months back. Opened it recently and it's dark, looks very oxidized. After making a couple bottles that turned out harsh, I make an unflavored test and yep, definitely the nicotine. Being that it's a couple months old and I've already used a bit of it.. Any chance of getting something, even a discount on a future bottle? Not sure if I should try to keep vaping it, try to exchange/something it or just toss it.. How would I safely dispose of 150ml of 48mg/ml nicotine anyway?

Edit: I'll call this issue resolved. I emailed NR and got a fairly quick and lengthy response from Wes. He explained that the nicotine couldn't have oxidized due to their nitrogen sealing of the bottle but that being stored at room temperature would have caused it to turn sour. He offered to replace both bottles and ship them out today. I responded and asked only for a replacement on the salts. I prefer them over freebase and being that it's been so long since I ordered them and have already used a portion of the freebase I didn't expect both of them to be replaced. I'm satisfied with that resolution. I'll be checking the condition of the nicotine upon receiving it and I'll keep it in the freezer.

I ended up making an unflavored test of the 100mg salts. While they aren't nearly as harsh as the freebase, there is a definite off-taste that I feel I would still pick up on when mixed with flavors.

I'm now left with almost 300ml of nicotine that I won't be using. What is the best way to dispose?

Should I dilute the shit out of it and dump down the drain? Or would it possibly be accepted at my local hazardous waste drop off point? I know they take stuff like paint, batteries, electronic and chemical waste. Nicotine should be covered in that most likely, right?

2 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimabout 7 years agoresident tobacco expert

How did you have it stored? I don’t think a couple month old bottle would warrant a refund or discount since that’s enough time for improperly stored nic to turn a bit sour.

1 points

by dontpanic4242about 7 years ago

It was in its original packaging, unopened until I initially went to use it. The only thing I did was make sure the bottle cap was tightened down but I never actually opened it. I kept the bottle in a drawer in my desk with the room being around 72F or so. I just looked up the order and I placed it on March 21. I didn't open the bottle at all until late May or early June. I'm at work so I can't get a picture of it but when looking into the 150ml bottle, it's about the color of Cream Soda. For comparison, I have a 150ml bottle of NicRiver Smooth Salts that I've been using since January that is still completely crystal clear even with repeated opening/closing/shaking through use.

When I first noticed it, I figured it was my fault for not checking the condition immediately on receiving it. So I tried to make it work but I'm realizing I'm just causing myself unnecessary pain and misery doing that. Kind of feeling I'd have to bite the bullet and call it a loss, I'm just not really feeling like ordering another one right now and possibly going through more hassle.

2 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

You should keep your nic in the freezer. I break it down into 30ml dropper bottles. I keep one working bottle out at room temperature. The rest stay in the freezer.

Having said that, I don't think the freezer would have helped here. You got bad nicotine. Period. 3-4 months at 72 degrees never opened should not do this.

I would contact NR. That's unacceptable and probably related to their poor rebottling practices.

by RamboUnchainedabout 7 years ago"I Bet I Could Clone That"

Just a quick question; I've been slipping on keeping my large batches up to date and have grown tired of fruity flavors and SnVs...I have some creams that tend to take about 7-10 days to mature. I vape about 15-20mL a day so I was wondering if throwing a 30mL of a cream into my heated ultrasonic for 10-15min would do a lot of harm considering it'll likely be gone in 2-3 days anyway? I know "speed-steeping" is frowned upon, but if I can get to some creamy goodness immediately, I'm all for it.

You should do it and let us know how it turns out. Worst case is it doesn't make much of a difference, not like it's going to make it go bad.

Even better if you set some aside to steep normally and compare the two batches.

What would be a good substitute for CAP Super Sweet, really looking to make Water Malone, but couldn't get super sweet with my latest order. I have everything else for it. i have TFA Sweetener and Cotton Candy. Would either of these work ok?

1 points

by Apexifiedabout 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

You can use TFA Sweetener but it's a lower concentration of sucralose and it contains maltol, so if you try using more to mimic Cap SS, you'll also be raising the level of maltol in your mix, which will likely cause muting. FW Sweetener would be a better substitute.

1 points

by graystorm01about 7 years ago

Bloody hell. either i will have to try it without the sweetener, or bite the bullet and place another order. I just got an order today. :(

1 points

by dontpanic4242about 7 years ago

Try it without the sweetener. Almost always I'll skip it when I follow recipes. I personally don't like the extra sweet taste or the way it gunks up coils. If you find it to be missing something you can always add sweetener after the fact.

1 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

I mix most other's recipes without sweetener. I tried this one without it and it was tolerable (too much green apple for me in a Watermelon mix).

You can try 0.5% of cotton candy if you want. Any more than that and you'll get a lot of muting. Those melons could use some muting in my opinion. They're a bit harsh to me.

1 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

If I must use sweetener, I prefer the ECX sweetener which is just a 10% dilution of sucralose. Much more friendly to work with. You don't have to worry about one extra drop being way too much.

I’ve been vaping for years, and diy for a few months. I recently got a juul for convenience and as a back up. I want to duplicate the cool cucumber flavor, not using nic salt just a normal e juice. Any insight on the recipe???

1 points

by Apexifiedabout 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

I feel like /u/juthinc might be able to help, seems like his kind of profile.

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

I've never touched a juul, so no clue as to what the juice in question would taste like, but at a guess, FLV (or CAP) Cucumber and some cooling agent. Probably koolada, but maybe WS-23.

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionabout 7 years agoMixologist

If you want to use the juice in a juul, you need to use nic salt. If you want to duplicate the recipe for another device, CAP Cucumber and CAP Cool Mint.

1 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

If you want to mimic the Juul "buzz" you're going to need nic salts in a VG base. Juul pods are 50-60mg nicotine.

Beyond that, I've been working on a couple recipes for a family member that uses a Juul. I've learned a few things:

  1. Keep your mix simple. 1-3 flavors and maybe some sweetener.

  2. Don't be afraid to mix at insanely high percentages (25% total flavor for example). The coils are tiny and low wattage. You practically have to coax the flavor out of these things.

  3. A VG/PG ratio of 70/30 or 60/40 works well. Max VG mixes will not wick properly and 50/50 mixes may cause pod leaking.

For your cucumber recipe, the others have made great suggestions. I'd recommend starting with about 10% CAP Cucumber, 5% CAP Cool Mint, and maybe 1% of your favorite sweetener. If that's not enough flavor increase in steps of 2-3% until you get the flavor saturation you're looking for.

1 points

by Jeffgoff85about 7 years ago

Thanks for all the tips, I want to make normal juice I just liked the flavor. I don’t want to refill the juul pods more trouble than it’s worth.

Looking for direction on a blueberry lollipop. Was thinking holy trinity for blueberry but unsure about direction for the hard candy. Just building off fw hard candy was one idea but thought that might introduce too many flavors I’m not looking for.

2 points

FW Hard Candy has a distinct jolly rancher base taste. It's also quite vicious when used over 1% unless your mix is otherwise aggressively flavored. (u/Vurve uses it at 3% in [Watermelon Crack] (https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/7025) but it's very aggressively flavored). It can taste like hairspray and start fighting with other flavors that are sweet.

u/ConcreteRiver has a great [review] (https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/64hmfm/fw_hard_candy) of this flavor with great notes and testing.

The only other thing that I think would work is a bit of Ethyl Maltol (Cotton Candy). Keep it low (0.5%) or it will cause muting too. Sometimes that can be a good thing though. Depending on the mix.

EDIT: Use this [link] (https://cse.google.com/cse/publicurl?cx=009942868369856134337:xvhw8tfrssg) to search the sub for "hard candy" it will return a lot of results. There are quite a few threads with comments that are notes and candy recipes. Much reading for you...

Thanks for all the tips, I want to make normal juice I just liked the flavor. I don’t want to refill the juul pods more trouble than it’s worth.

You made a new comment instead of a reply to one...

No problem. The flavor percentages still hold true in pod devices whether you go high nic with nic salts or not.

Cinnamon Ceylon is a bakery type cinnamon. LA is an additive that has many uses, one of which is “cooking” the apples in the recipe.

Hey guys, I've been vaping VG+VG based 24 mg (totally unflavored) for about a year now but I always find myself lapsing to cigarettes or cigars whenever I drink, because I crave that tobacco smell / taste.

What TFA flavor is the best tobacco? No BS flavors, no weird stuff, just something that at least smells like tobacco (I don't care too much about taste because it's the smell of tobacco that I like). I want to go with the cheapest TFA tobaccos they offer on Nicotine River:

RY4 Double, Western Flavor, Red Type Blend, Turkish, DK Tobacco, Cigarillo, RY4 Asian, RY4 Type*

Any ideas would be appreciated. I don't really want to get in to mixing or flavors I just want a tobacco that I can vape while drinking to supplement the serious urge to smoke when I have less self control. Everything I read so far is indicating "Red Type Blend" but I want some advice here. Harsh is fine as long as it smells and maybe tastes like tobacco, I'll be drunk while hitting it.

You’ll likely not have much success with limiting yourself to TFA, but I guess I’d go with Western.

Damn it's that bad? What other flavors are there at the low end on NicRiver you'd suggest then? It's hard to find stuff when I search because, for instance, IndoorSmokers and other "reviewers" do a lot of sponsered crap, super expensive stuff. I just want a basic ashtray to suck on when I'm two Icehouse Edges in and on my third one.

It’s not really horrible, and it might work well enough for what you’re looking for. But for me personally, TFA tobaccos are only good in a mix where I can kind of hide all the off notes that come along with them. But a lot of people do like Western, so it might be worth a shot.

If you’re after a basic ashtray taste, that’s pretty much what INW DNB is made for. FLV Classic Cigarette is a little more expensive, but super strong and also pretty dirty.

If you want some NET I can send you some. That’s going to be the best way to get yourself some tobacco taste. And I’ve got a whole bunch I’d like to get rid of so it’s a win win.

Nah it's OK dude I am just buying from NicRiver on my regular bi-annual bulk buy but wanted to get some cheap tobacco flavor I wouldn't use except for making a batch of tobacco.
