TL:DR - I mixed my largest batch yet at 16oz and everything went well until I mixed Strawberry at the percentage for Pear. Strawberry mistakenly got 27ml mixed while Pear used Strawberry's % and got 13.5ml
This is a horrible start for me with large batches! I can't believe it - I'm an idiot. I really hope that the large batch I screwed up is still usable. Otherwise I have 16oz of failure.
I usually mix 230ml at a time, but I found a flavor that I go though very fast. It's a honey pearry clone. So, I decided to mix 16oz (473ml) of the good stuff so I'm not mixing as often.
Everything was going smoothly (I mix by weight) I've got the VG, PG, Nicotine and the first two flavors already mixed. The last two ingredients were strawberry and pear.
Here's where I fucked up. I freaking mixed up strawberry according to pear's percentage (MUCH larger) shit shit. I decide to just pour Pear in at Strawberries percentage.
I'm distraught at losing almost 500ml of liquid because of this screw up.
Mix up another batch but make the opposite mistake* and then combine them.
*in this case, 40.5ml of Strawberry and no Pear
Thanks for the idea. I just don't have everything right now to make another 16oz batch.
How about doing it in smaller batches, then? Mix whatever quantity you can afford right now without the ~~pear~~(oops) strawberry, and do 50% with your messed up one until your next order when you can fix the rest.
You won't avoid mixing often, but at least you won't have wasted it.
Thanks for the positive reply. I'm hoping my happy accident is something I can stand vaping.
Edit: I love this sub - a great place for learning along with a bunch of great subscribers that help a lot of people. This sub was one of the biggest reasons for me to start mixing with all the information here and others happy to answer questions. It's been a godsend - I save so much money by diy mixing and that's huge for me for where I'm at in life currently. Thank you to all who help others who were like me before.
Got that recipe available? Any recipe someone is willing to mix 16oz has got to be good. As for the mistake, it's possible to adjust the recipe so the strawberry is the right percentage. Both just might end up with double the juice.
It's a Honey Pearry Clone (not my creation)
All Flavors are TPA
Honeydew: 1%
Honeysuckle: 3%
Pear: 6%
Strawberry: 3%
Has a good taste to me and my coils last quite a bit longer than with some of my other stuff.
Ooh, I can actually make this. It sounds delicious, and I actually get to use my honeysuckle.
If you need another recipe for Honeysuckle, Longing from u/ID10-T is one of my all-time favorite mixes.
Shit like this happens, I started to use these mini plastic cups and pre weigh everything and set it up like a fancy fucking cooking show where all the ingredients are in the order they go in the big bowl/bottle. I always double check the weight when all is set up so I am sure everything is correct
This was one of the smoothest times I've had mixing. Stuff was weighing real easy and it went super fast and then I f'd up.
Your way there sounds almost fool proof and super organized. Good stuff.
i tend to loose track of what the next step is if i get stressed or interrupted so i just wanted a decent way of eliminating the risk of fubbing up completely :)
Mise en place, my friend. I'm a professional line cook and it is life. Start nothing until you have everything out and ready to go, be it prepping something before service or getting your station ready for service.
Also a really good habit to apply elsewhere, as you've found.
Sucks to hear about your error, but I am optimistic that it will turn out fine and be vapeable. If you had done the same mistake with a custard or cinnamon, I would probably be less hopeful. :)
When I mix (10 ml testers, larger batches), I always line my flavors up beforehand according to how they are displayed in my recipe. I use ELR and the flavors are ordered alphabetically. I just go down the list, grab the flavors as they appear and line them up. After this preparation, I go down the recipe, adding each flavor at the recipe's ratios. I immediately put each flavor back in its place on the rack after adding it to the mix. This has been a habit from almost the beginning of my DIY days and I haven't made a mistake yet (knock on wood).
What kind of rack do you use to store flavors?
Heh, I have too many organizers. I've gotten several from Fasttech like this one and this one. I also have a cabinet dedicated to large bottles of my most-used flavorings. Yeah yeah rabbit hole... whatever... 600-flavors and 5-years later...
Edit: that lazy-susan type of rack I linked to is crazy expensive now. When I ordered it, it was just under $14 USD. Wtf
Hell if you don't want it pm me and I'll replace the materials. 😉
That's awesome of you! It should be salvageable I think --- I'm just glad I didn't put a ton of honeysuckle in there instead of strawberry. You're a solid dude!
Np m8. Shoot me a pm when you get a chance. Got a few questions first then we'll see if we can't set something up.
Thanks again .... but I don't need for you to send me anything as I've got other ways to get by - and there's a chance the batch I screwed up might be good enough to use. Might have to pick your brain if I have to alter or add anything to it to make it usable. Your offer humbles me, for real.
I don't remember exactly when this was, but my biggest fuckup came from a time TFA had a bad batch of strawberry - it was around the time 'the milkman' in white bottles came out (i suspect they got hit with the same batch).
8 gallons of bad juice :/ Not bad-bad just.... off...
That's why I always mix my flavourings first, and add the nic, PG and VG at the end. Maybe try that in the future ?
Nic first, anything on the inner lip of the bottle can make it easier for the nic to form a seal and then make a bubble which can make a mess.
Then flavors, PG, and end with VG.
That's how we did it when we made house blends at the shop I used to work at.
Double the recipe, don't add anymore strawberry and add 40.5ml more of Pear.... Then add the same amount of any other concentrate in the recipe... and fixed.
Or just throw it away, its cheap as hell if you buy it in bulk. 500ml isn't anything big.
You will end up spending 10x as much if you are buying ingredients in small amounts.
Throw down $100 - $150, Go for the gallons of VG at a time "nicotine river" and the 4oz concentrate bottles.
Rather do that two times a year than having to re-up every month or two for half the cost.
I've done this, just not on that scale as I usually only mix 120s. I fixed it by making a larger batch. that's large enough the scale will have issues so I'd probably figure out what the offset was and mix up a batch like that and combine the two in a larger bottle. or something.
I've started to mix up one shots, it makes things easier IMHO.
