Sudden increased sensitivity to butyric acid?
submitted about 7 years ago by nox_mani

Today I decided to fill up a tank with a blueberry greek yogurt flavor I mixed a little over a week ago and I'm detecting a vomit-like flavor I've never really noticed in this mix before. I've also never been sensitive to butyric acid in the past.

The recipe, for reference:

TFA - Bavarian Cream 1.3%

FA - Black Currant 2%

TFA - Blueberry Extra 6.66%

TFA - Greek Yogurt 8%

The TFA Blueberry Extra was a new bottle I hadn't used before.

Has anyone else suddenly tasted vomit from butyric acid flavors or could there be something else I'm not thinking of?

Answer:

Way too much greek yogurt and other ingredients containing butyric acid. Steeping helped contribute to the strength of the vomit flavor.

I kinda want to vomit looking at that recipe! That’s a ton of Greek yogurt. Bet that barf note really cranked up after a week long steep.

Would steeping really increase the vomit taste? It's a recipe I mix on rare occasion in small amounts when I'm in a weird mood for something blueberry.

Doing a bit of googling, it seems others share your opinion that the greek yogurt might be a bit high.

Typically vomit flavor (most common in TFA DX flavors) takes months to fade, but taste like straight up puke until then. That's why nobody in their right mind uses them.

Here's the ingredients list for TFA Blueberry Extra: https://shop.perfumersapprentice.com/componentlist.aspx?sku_search=342648

Butanoic acid is another name for butyric acid. Looks like you've tipped over the vomit threshold. Some people are more sensitive to it than others but we'll all taste it if it's strong enough.

I noticed when I click on "Butatonic acid" on Blueberry Extra it brings up a list of all the flavors that use it. However, Greek Yogurt wasn't listed. When I searched for Greek Yogurt separately it does say it contains butatonic acid, however it is listed as an "acid flavor" where as BB Extra it's listed as an "ester flavor". When it's listed as an acid flavor it has an entirely different flavor profile than when it is used as an ester flavor. Is there a real difference? What makes it have a vomit taste (examples are cheese, cream, or most DX flavors) as opposed to something like Strawberry Ripe that uses it as an ester and doesn't have that gross taste??

Dunno. AFAIK the vomit thing is just about concentration.

I do get a barfy taste from butyric acid. That's why I try to stay away from any flavors that use it.

it's literally vomit flavor

when you throw up and taste the vomit itself, that's the butyric acid you're tasting. I don't know why the flying fuck anyone would want to use it in chocolate (lookin' at you Hersheys), let alone eliquid.

I remember the first and last time I tasted Hershey's chocolate I got a strong vomit note. Now I know why.

lol, I'm greatly considering that option. It's just odd that it hasn't bothered me before.

As you noted yourself, BB Extra contains butyric too and it stacks, which could be why it passed into the threshold of vomit.

You could also be developing a sensitivity to it, that tends to happen over time, especially if you use concentrates beyond their intended range.

My go to blueberry yogurt is

Flavor west blueberry 5% Flavor west yogurt 6%

I promise you this is the best blueberry yogurt you will find. I've had all of them tfa, cap, flavor arts, every one and the best is that right there. Thank me later.

Try dx sweet cream or dx baba cream.... Banana cream needs like 4 weeks to chill the fuck out. Prior it's vomit pepper spray.

Butyric acid is what makes vomit smell like vomit, so I'm not sure what your problem is ...
