Hi, I've been vaping for almost two months and started the journey directly on the DIY way, just because I think it's easier for me to find a flavor (I usually vape single flavors, but more on that just in a moment) that I will love rather to buy from names like...Bebeca or trubio and such. The problem is, I just find my two ADV's but my kids hate the smell. I would understand if it were something strange but...It's just plain cheesecake with a bit of sour strawberry and ry4 with a punch of vainilla and caramel. They especially hate the cheesecake one and they run while screaming "mom!!! It's stinky cheese!!!". FYI I vape far away from them and even out of home to reduce the harm to them but I thought it will be funny to share.
The reason for the smell is likely Butyric Acid. A flavouring that aims to add realistic creaminess to the mix.
Butyric Acid is also present in strong cheeses, foot odor and vomit. It's often produced as part of the rotting decomposing cycle.
Wow, and I think it's possible to add it alone, right?
I bought some high concentrate butyric acid a while ago, wouldn't recommend it. It's put me right off it haha, a single wiff of it and you'll permanently go off it! It's become the main substitute to diketones for cream flavours, some use it well but many (especially cheesecake for some reason) overuse it and it turns out disgusting.
It's funny just how much sense of smell differs between persons.
My custard ADV apparently smells delicious to pretty much everyone, except my GF.
It's really quite fascinating even for her, because not only can she literally smell the stuff from miles away even hours after I vaped it but also she says it's a very strong, really pungent odor to her, like bad milk.
She also loved strawberry aromas when I used to mix them. Me on the other hand… I can't even taste them. At all.
There's really no workaround here. Our senses vary enough to where what smells awesome to you can be revolting for others. All we can really do is be considerate.
> but also she says it's a very strong, really pungent odor to her, like bad milk.
That's probably V1 then, right? I can't stand Diacetyl, when I vape one puff I feel like throwing up, while everyone else seems to like it. This is quite rare, I only met very few people who don't like V1.
Sooo true...and unfortunately when those of us less sensitive if we don’t know it stinks or could possibly stink it’s nice u have someone that can tell u. I once in a while get a strawberry and/ or fruity whiff but in my mind they all smell great! 😂 Compared to cigs it’s hard to be as offensive but I’ll have to keep in mind they don’t all smell great and try to be more aware....;)
I made a cannoli juice and went to a party/function and I could hear people saying I hope they get them cakes out soon they smell delicious, ohhh can you smell that. My missus came home and asked what was I baking! Got the hump when she realised it was the Vape!!! She pretty much hates all the smells of juices, moans they all smell the same.
The cannoli contest one from elr? That shit is divine, smells awesome too. If you like bakery type vapes, you should definitely try Butter Almond Custard as well.

I used cap glazed donut for a little while and I loved the taste of it. I got it to the point where it was like a glazed, slightly powered, krispy kreme.
But I stopped because I was in a queue for the drive through with some friends and they said it smelt like puke. I also had people say burnt plastic or the usual play dough...
I don't know what the solution is though buddy!
It's all in the mix and each ingredient's levels. I only use cheesecake at .5% it is so strong.
E.g The mouth-watering aroma of roasted cocoa beans — key ingredient for chocolate — emerges from substances that individually smell like potato chips, cooked meat, peaches, raw beef fat, cooked cabbage, human sweat, earth, cucumber, honey and an improbable palate of other distinctly un-cocoa-like aromas.
This smells/ tasting/ olfactory stuff I find sooo fascinating and quite complicated, to me. But I luvluvluv learning about these different molecules they use to make different tastes for stuff like bananas, dr. Pepper, and I can’t really speak intelligently on it so I’ll stop but there’s some good stuff to get started on in deeperdiy if anyone interested...;)
I use it at 8% but it's because it's the recommended by the manufacturer (oil4vap). On the other hand, I tell them what they prefer, stinky cheese or stinky cigs...
Fair enough. Personally I'd try and find an alternative if they dislike it that much.
Yep, try not to do dessert vapes around non-vapers, it's pretty rude. I try to stick with fruits, mints, beverage or herbals like basil, lavender, rose etc.
I've had the the best of luck with mint anise (white tic-tac), blueberry lemonade and peach tea. Everyone seems to enjoy their second hand aroma.
Which cheesecake? TFA cheesecake I can't stand the smell of, capella's doesn't seem to be that bad. I second /u/TheAlmightyD its probably butyric acid.
Capellas New York Cheesecake is nice but it's packed full of diketones, hence why it's nice haha.
I mean thats the real question, isn't it?
Can a vaper be trusted to make questionable health decisions for a better flavor?
I never really dug AP or Diacytal maybe flavorings, but customers sure did. I get a 'milk on a hot day' throat feeling

I knew of at least one juice vendor who actually added straight diacytal to some recipes, and they sold like hotcakes.
Butryic acid is just vile to me though. I moved on to mostly dirty fruits-
Give me INW Mango Shisha, INW Arbuz, INW Peach and Apricot, INW sun tea and I'll make and vape liters of it. just add a little menthol and koolada
I support informing consumers about the ingredients in e-juice. I owned a company for 4 years that I had to shut down due to law changes in the UK. On my website you could see a list of every flavour compound I used in each flavour. I liked giving the customer the ability to understand what they were actually buying.
I also made it clear if a flavour used diketones or sucrolose with warnings stating that. I'd fully support laws that make that mandatory to be honest.
I've similarly moved off from both, some of the FA flavours that contain butyric I still enjoy though but at much smaller dosages. Also I read a while ago that BA has the potential to be far more harmful than diketones in concentrations found so it's a pretty ill-informed market in my opinion.
