Weekly Discussion Thread - Week of July 2, 2018
submitted about 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page.

  • Want to show off your most recent or first flavor order?

  • Found a cool new way to organize your flavors?

  • Shout out a mixer here who helped you get started?

  • Theorycraft an idea for a mix?

  • Talk about your DIY journey thus far?

  • Haven’t started DIY yet and want to talk about it?

And pretty much anything else… anything goes, even if it’s only mixing related because you mix and want to chat with other mixers.

DIY_eJuice Discord is also a thing, if you’re into that.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly New Mixers Thread - This has been and will remain the ‘Safe Zone’ for any beginner questions. While it was once the place you posted after your post was [removed] or after a Mod/Sidebar-nazi directed you there, the New Mixers Thread remains an absolute judgement free zone where there are no stupid questions and everyone there wants to help.

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights from last week: Some interesting discussions in the top spots last week. /u/shiznid12 got inundated with advice on Peanut Butter flavorings while /u/gazzychesh casually observed that the American palate is far too reliant on sweetener. /u/Prolly_ started to venture into tobaccos on the right foot, with the help of our resident tobacco experts and /u/ID10-T’s Throwback Thursday project is kicking along nicely, with some great input from the community.

On the recipe side we had Vanilla Custard and My Process hit the front page and well, it was definitely a hit. A great write-up and recipe by none other than /u/xGRANITE who also happened to have the top-rated recipe in the June Recipe Thread

Also last week /u/kirkt handed off future recipe threads to me and I got BCF to hook up our top-rated recipe poster with a gift card. Not planning on it being every month, at this point, but I'd like to see what you all think about the idea...

Let me know.

I don't know if this is the best place to ask this... but I'm trying to recreate a soft drink called Rubicon.

The most popular one is mango. And I thought for sure that sexy or sparkling mango would be in it. I now doubt it. For starters I picked the wrong wrecka mango.

What are my options for a good, perhaps slightly syrupy mango combination. (Hopefully you guys have a good idea of what's available to the EU). I've read every FOTW and I see no consensus. Some say FW mango and cap sweet mango is the best, and a fair few have shit on that combo. Help clear this up?!

It's hard to give any advice without having tried Rubicon short of what you're not going to want to hear, which is try all the mangos and see which one tastes the most like Rubicon. Not sure I can think of one for which "syrupy" really applies, maybe INW Shisha Mango?

by TheBorgerKingabout 7 years ago

Yeah I was afraid you were going to pop up and say that! Can't you just try the drink instead?! :p is there any I should definitely avoid?

I'm basically after a highly sweet mango without the rind or seed or green notes wherever possible.

To avoid, necessarily not under all circumstances but probably this one based just on what you've said you're looking for, with no knowledge of the drink (though if you want to send me some?): TFA Mango, TFA Chili Mango, INW Mango, FA Mango, VT Green Mango, HS Mango, everything by OoO.

The syrupy bit of rubicon could be helped by a shit load of sweetner. It's a very sweet mango drink.

Anyone else miss that bastard?

I do. If I don't have a concrete flavor review, I simply don't buy the concentrate (for the most part). His knowledge and presence is invaluable.

This thread was posted 2 days ago, and since it isn’t stickied right now, I had to scroll through about 20 posts to find it. Just an observation on how busy the sub has gotten recently. I can dig it.

It's the best of times and the worst of times but, yeah, I can dig it too.

Can we add a link to this weekly post in the sidebar with the links to the other weekly posts?

1 points

by Apexifiedabout 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Probably? I'm still trying to gauge whether we need a discussion thread based on how people use it or if we should merge the new mixers thread and discussion thread into one thing.

What strength salts are you folks mixing for pod devices? Especially for users coming from a Juul. I have a relative I'll be mixing for that's using a Juul that would like to get a refillable pod device.

1 points

by ID10-Tabout 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

For myself, I've been mixing 25mg/ml for a Sourin Air that I only use at the office. But that's coming from sub-ohm vaping 3mg for a long time and recently stepping down to 2.75mg. For someone going from smoking to a Juul to a refillable pod device you might want to try 35 to 50mg/ml.

By the way, a couple of weeks ago I would have gladly recommended the Sourin Air (or for a woman Sourin Drop - not saying a man can't use a Drop, but to me it looks too girly like something a lady might keep in her makeup bag and I just can't). But lately, I've had some really bad luck with getting pods that are duds - they're burning up after being filled up just once, and I've verified it's not the juice's fault, and that I'm not alone in having this issue. If the pods were cheaper I might not mind so much but the local vape shop wants $5 each for them. Ridiculous.

So I'm in the market for a new pod system. It's probably incredibly stupid to expect better results out of a Smok product than literally any other company, but I think I might risk wasting $30 and pick up the new Smok Badge pod thingy. Edit: a word

I’d been eyeing the warlock peas or the boulder rock. Any experience with those?

3 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimabout 7 years agoresident tobacco expert

I use a Peas. It’s not horrible I suppose. I have to do a super restricted lung hit with it for it to be satisfying because it’s right on the edge of being too loose for MTL for me. And I feel like when I do MTL with it I don’t get quite enough air going through so I’m flirting with dry hits. But it’s pretty decent if super restricted lung doesn’t turn you off. I have no other pod things to compare to though. And I’ve noticed the two pods that come with the kit might have too much cotton. Had better luck with replacement pods. I mix 40/60 VG/PG for it with 25 mg Nicotine salts.

No experience but I have heard good things about the Boulder Rock

Thanks for the mixing info. Will a 50/50 mix work?

It seems that there are 2 types of pod devices. Ones that are Juul-like (Suorins) and ones that put off clouds (Joyetech Penguin). It's hard to know the difference without watching reviews.

Have you looked at the Suorin iShare? I wonder if those coils/pods are free from issues. They have a kit that comes with 2 devices and a portable charging pack. I was considering recommending that... In hopes that she will get her husband to use the other. 😉

50/50 mix is what I’ve been doing, yes. I haven’t looked at the iShare or heard anything about it beyond that it exists but I will now

Nicotine salt may not be suitable for Mr SMOK, more than 12 w, nicotine salt carbon will be very terrorist...

I don’t know if I feel worse about spending $75 on a flavor order, the thought of single flavor testing 20 new flavors, or not having a place to put 20 new flavors. Hash tag mixerstress.

I love the discussion thread. I am enjoying the free flowing community posts. I am also enjoying the restructuring and trying to participate more in the process as well as trying to up my mixing game. The week in review is a very nice touch. I truly enjoy reading it. It makes me feel like contributions are being recognized and noted but also serves as a reminder to check back on some threads as they slide down the scale. DIY does take time and patience so sometimes I find myself forgetting to check back in after time has passed to see how a conversation has evolved. The opening of the forum has also led to some real-time spontaneity which is also invigorating.

I realize I'm late to post this week but I never commented on any of that from the last week and didnt want to miss another opportunity to give some feedback and be a part of the community. The BCF hook up is also a really nice touch too. Thanks for your efforts.

This is something I have played around with in my head but I haven't really put in much effort into doing research. What sort of steps would it take for me to start an e-liquid line? I would like to keep it small, and probably local.

Right now I sell e-liquid to friends/family and I've always wanted to expand just a little further, but I'm worried about the obvious legal implications if I don't have the proper parachute in place. Right now the things I can think of are:

  1. I'll need an LLC
  2. I'll need some sort of liability insurance
  3. I'll need to contact my state FDA rep to see what is required for an e-liquid lab.

Now this is just a pipe-dream at this point. It's a very fun hobby and I'm glad it reaps a little bit of fruit. I'm not sure if I would ever pursue it but it's fun to think about.

Exciting! Let me try to answer...

> 1. I'll need an LLC

Yes! Good on you, easy to set up depending on your state but do it anyway. Should only cost you around $50 and time filling out the form. If you want to go pro, set up a business checking account and keep the businesses money separate from yours.

> 2. I'll need some sort of liability insurance

Probably not to start out with, see major gotchas in #3 below...

> 3. I'll need to contact my state FDA rep to see what is required for an e-liquid lab.

Ok so here's where things get sticky. I'd honestly advocate (I'm sure some will disagree) that you "fly under the radar" and sell to shops direct without involving the FDA. My last venture into the deeming rules left me very confused and I think to be 100% compliant with the current law you'd need a lawyer and a lot of money.

I would develop a simple contract for shops to sign which covers you from an age enforcement perspective, or just sell shops 0mg juice and let them nic it up ... and you are covered.

I feel like if you're just providing basically flavored VG/PG in bottles you're no different from a vendor at any farmers market all over the country.

Best of luck! Obviously I have thought about this... DM me if you want to go further with advice.

by BlameReligionabout 7 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

Thanks for the advice! I know a few shops near me that just sell 0mg liquid and add nic accordingly to the customer's needs so that could be a option. I'll definitely take this into consideration.

2 points

by l1qu1ddr3amsabout 7 years ago

You're most welcome. I feel this would shift all the underage / minor / FDA woes onto the shop selling the product.

P.S. if you make it big, don't be a douche and put Dora the Explorer on your labels or something. We have enough of a battle as it is ;-)

Happy Mixing!

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

The FDA thing is a serious problem.

Your best bet is selling premixed flavor concentrates. Shops that want to sell liquid they make... well, they can run afoul of the authorities, but since you're only selling a flavoring mix you should be immune. Remember 0mg juices are still considered a tobacco product and hence subject to all the rules. Really, most shops should've figured out the right strength of unflavored juice for a 120ml bottle to be filled with 100ml of unflavored at such that adding 20ml of a flavor shot would result in the better-selling strengths, and just get the unflavored okayed. Then they could sell the flavor shots independently, and not have to get them okayed the way every flavor juice at every strength had to be registered.

The honest answer if you are in the US is you can't unless you want to do so illegally. You missed your chance by quite a while.

Is there a blueberry that can stand up with pineapple (one). Found the Trinity made for some off notes, but may have just needed a steep.

3 points

by amouthforwarabout 7 years ago

check this thread out

bilberry and FW blueberry in the trinity both have some fucking wicked offnotes early on. Bilberry always gives me a musty sock vibe until like 7-8 days after and FW blueberry is just sort of astringent until like 4 days after mixing.

to be honest I think those 3 are likely the best but nowadays who knows. So many companies came out of the woodwork. If you really want something strong, look out for MF Blueberry. Something lighter and brighter, maybe FLV. Check Purilum, Liquid Barn, DIYFS, etc. for their offerings too.

by mjswooperabout 7 years ago

Thanks for the reply, will do. I was trying them all SNV style, so I guess that was my problem. Will grab FLV blueberry if I can as well.

I like FLV Blueberry and FLV Boysenberry together a lot. I use them together in a [blueberry oatmeal cookie recipe] (https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/57253#violoats_beauregarde_by_kindground). They stand up to the bakeries well. I imagine they'd stand up to the pineapple.

I had a random thought on the way to work this morning, is it possible to make a juice that would stimulate all your senses of taste?

Sweet obviously isn’t a problem, nor sour. Salty, One of the sweet creams I bought supposedly has a jizz aspect to it. Umami, I’m at a loss. And I feel like there were more tastes I’m forgetting. Would something like that even taste good?

I've been out of the game for a little over a year, looking to dive back in...

Do I need to trash my stock and start fresh? I have a lot of $ invested in old stock (some of it 2+ years old)

  • Flavors have been stored in the dark at room temperature.
  • Nic has been in freezer, vacuum-purged style dispenser.
  • PG/VG base room temp, in the dark, seal broken but capped.
2 points

by Apexifiedabout 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

It's possible you could run into problems with all of your supplies but the only way to find out is to test them. More than likely your nic should be fine for much longer than that, considering it was stored properly. The PG/VG, if sealed tightly, shouldn't have absorbed much, if any, moisture/odor from the air. But at least some of the flavors will have lost some potency.

I'd suggest testing everything individually, as if you were just starting out, in order to rule out any potential problems. Once you've figured out that your bases and nic by themselves aren't harsh or funky tasting, you'll be able to try out the flavors to see how much (if any) potency they've lost.

Just got the intake rta. It's a smooth restricted DL vape. I'm discovering flavour notes I had never tasted before on the SMM RTA, which has been the only RTA I've ever liked up to now. This one is definitely a flavour chaser, if rta's are your thing. It's interesting how different tanks bring out different notes in flavours.

So what was the consensus on Rick's sugar daddy sweetener? Is it worth picking up or all marketing? Gremlin has it fairly cheap so I'll probably give it a shot unless it was determined to be disgusting.

2 points

by Apexifiedabout 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

I've only tried it in one recipe I'm really familiar with, in order to gauge how it affected the mix. At around 1 drop per 10ml it was already starting to mute out the subtleties. But it was pretty damn sweet...

Positive that doesn't count as a consensus but I've heard that about it from others too. Still have a lot so I plan to test it more before tossing it (or setting it somewhere and forgetting it exists)

1 points

by Lulzorrabout 7 years ago

Hmm, well 10ml of the original stuff is only about 3$ so i spose it's worth a shot. I won't feel horrible over it compared to, say, not enjoying alpine strawberry. The muting seems annoying but i think in the other thread someone mentioned a drop of sucralose bringing back the flavor.
