Hello everyone,
I don't know if this has been discussed before but has anyone noticed, us British folk prefer to go for flavour where as US are more about the sweetness? This goes for pretty much any commercial foods too. Maybe I'm being silly but some of the US recipes I've made up are crazy sweet to the point where I have to tone them down. I wonder if this can be attributed to the high use of fructose corn syrup in US products (it's becoming more and more common in the UK now too)?
This is just a casual observation, I would much rather be able to taste the different components of a recipe working in harmony than have a sweetner mask everything.
I've tried a few american juices and i really did not like any of them, they all tasted like sweetener with a hint of whatever the flavor was.
Charlie Chalk Dust was by far the worst offender, i can't remember the flavor, but it was like i was dripping pure Cap Super Sweet.
A tiny bit of sweetener can elevate the mix and make the nuances more prominent, allowing you to taste more- depending on the recipe obviously. A good example is how DIYorDIE often adds .5% of super sweet to his recipes. You can barely taste it as a sweetener but it makes a difference.
Having said that, I definitely agree that quite a few juices (and foods) in the US have WAY too much sweetener, and you can definitely go overboard. I dont even eat sweets because all the sweets in the US make me sick from how much sugar is in there. Also because all the cheap junk food sweet stuff uses GMO high-fructose corn syrup, which is not only terrible for you, but also abhorently sweet.
My GFs Mom gave me some of these South American cake things that are basically just like bread with a small amount of sugar baked into them that I really liked, because they were sweet but just barely so.
Sugar is like a drug, it changes our brain chemistry, and the more you eat it the more your tolerance builds. For someone like me who doesn't eat alot of sugar, ingesting things like sweets or sodas in the US is sickening because unlike the average American pallet, I'm not used to eating so much sugar, so it tastes that much more sweet to me.
Something to bear in mind, and I'm sure it affects the pallets across regions, including the juice we vape.
EDIT: Note; This is not a judgement or condemnation of any Americans or their lifestyles. If anything, it's indicative of the industry in the US that pushes consumerism with the biggest profit margins it can attain, and the general populace tends to pay the price with unhealthy options being more accessible, cheaper, and frequent.
Definitely a sugar based palette in the US. There’s loads of sweetener in commercial juices. I diy and had my brother try one of my mixes and he said it tastes like dirt. He’s used to vaping one of the sweetest brands out there. Dirt, he called it. It was an apple pie type with rich cinnamon 🤦🏽♂️
I've never tried juice from the other side of the pond, but... ISTR that IrnBru is somewhat less sweet than Dr Pepper,
IRNBRU (provided you had it on the past) was like 38% sugar. I find it hard to believe there was anything on the market that was sweeter than that.
Now that I think about it, it was the diet version... but even so, you probably haven't tried some pop from this side of the pond. The 'regular' versions are, I find, way too fucking sweet to tolerate.
Haha! I love Irn Bru but then I do have some Scottish heritage. High in sugar and used to be full of additives, however there's nothing quite like that taste. I tried the sugar free version and because it had so much sweetner in it I ended up with terrible stomach cramps and lots of (wind).
This is the reason that I switched to DIY. Most commercial juices here (US) are chock full of sweetener and I'm very sensitive to sucralose. The few vendors I found that I liked that didn't use sweetener were kind of "chic" and expensive.
I must say that I'm not fond of the "American" palate in most aspects. I threw or gave away probably $300 in commercial juice that I couldn't vape because it was so sweet.
I will use a very small amount sometimes when it might benefit the recipe. Never Capella Super Sweet, only a 10% dilution of sucralose, and no more than 1 drop per 10ml.
EDIT: another flavor anomaly.... the UK does not seem to like tobacco flavors. I requested Chef's Flavours carry JF RY4 Double because they carry other JF. They flat out said no. It won't sell.
Rainbow Vapes carry it I think. Really great service from there, I've used them for a while and James (the owner) is a really nice person to deal with. JF Chocolate is the only one I've tried that even gets close to the real thing, instead of the horrendously shitty Tootsie Roll rubbish.
Sweet juices tend to make my throat go all icky, I prefer to stay away from them otherwise I end up coughing up a lot of groggy stuff. Whenever I use a juice without sweetener I don’t get the groggy throat. Even having the same mix of juice and trying out many sweeteners and comparing it to the same juice without sweetener has shown that the sweetener is what’s causing it.
I've written all of this and I just ordered some Super Sweet to try out yesterday. I've been using Flavorah Sweetness for a while as I wanted to avoid sucralose but I'm wondering if it's having an adverse effect on some of my mixes. I've been developing an After Eight recipe for a while (pretty much a clone of the awesome Viking Vapourisers "Hod"), I'm nearly there with it but the chocolate / sweetness is just a bit off.
I was under the impression that FLV Sweetness was sucralose. I believe the owner of flavorah stated so to Wayne, which he then conveyed on one of his podcasts
Thanks mate, that's a shame. I was under the impression it contained stevia!
I mean you could be right. I know I've seen people saying that it's stevia-derived online, but never from an official or definitive source. Im pretty sure I recall Wayne saying that the owner of FLV told him that. Maybe someone else could chime in/clarify?
I'm not sure about palates, but one thing I did notice while I was developing my TPD compliant juices I imported a shitload of nic shots from the UK and they made my juice so spicy. I feel like there's something innately different about the nicotine you guys get. I tried several brands so I don't think it was just a fluke. Maybe the way that mixers compensate for the nicotine is a factor.
I don't even have any sweetener, much less use any in the juice I brew. Been vaping about 5 years now. I'm American but agree sugar is garbage for one's health, and I've never really been a fan. I don't put it in my coffee, don't eat sweets, avoid processed, prepackaged food due to all the crap in it including added sugar in the majority of it.
And while the obesity problem faced by developed nations has several causes such as sedentary lifestyle and overconsumption of calories, one other factor is insulin response. It's been shown that when eaten, artificial zero calorie sweeteners provoke an insulin response, and I assume it's no different when inhaled.
I see a lot of overweight people vaping and I wonder how much their (likely sweetened) e-juice is contributing. It's just one more reason in the big pile to DIY.
There have been studies, vaping does not affect insulin measurably. Sucralose molecules are probably too large to pass through the lungs. It's also miniscule amounts compared to what you eat.
I do agree, as a French, I've tried many US juice, ending all time by this question : how can someone like literally Vaping sugar? I even saw that some of us juice maker put aspartam in their liquide...
I dunno, I can't have any taste when so much sweetener, it ruins coil & cotton so fast, it's not good for the health, it cover the flavor, I really do not understand why all USA best seller are over sweetened, is USA random fellow palette that bad? Can't be, isn't it?
And then I remember we are speaking about the fatest people on earth so, ofc they can vape sugar. But I never thought that, I, as a French, may have a better palette since I live litteraly in the world's best flavor producer country, so may be it's me who is kinda hard to satisfy.
This post made me realize why people shit on me for being french. Your palette is not better because you live in france. Nice try though.
People shit on you for being a Dick head, obviously. Because living in different countries does produce different things you know, even if you don't like it. American are the fatest people on earth because their industries put sugar on everything, when in France you can have some good quality product and especially when it come to flavor. For instance, we, as French people, drink a lot of different wine, eat a lot of different cheese, and have a variated gastronomy. So it may alter our palette, yes.
Now If my point is too harsh for your little being, please just don't read it and stop forcing me to talk to you as if you were a retarded 6 yo boys. Yes different country have different tastes, même si ça dérange ta petite grille de lecture de bobo de merde.
But may be next time instead of writing shitty hors sujet post try to answer or at least contribute to the debate. Thanks.
Weird, didn't an AMERICAN team win the bocuse d'or this past year? I honestly don't disagree with you. I am just tired of the french thinking they know everything when it comes to food/flavors. There's also 325 million people in the us compared to 66 million in france. What are the odds that we would have a higher obesity rate? Anyway, I'll let you get back to your bri and pinot. Thanks for the help in iraq!
Mass produced/prepared foods generally include added sugars. There's a balance of sugar, salt, and fat that serves as a drug of sorts... the normal satiation signals sent by the brain are suppressed by the combo. Thus, if you're eating one of the prepared foods designed to hit the combination correctly (and practically all fast foods do) it's almost certain to induce overeating.
As a 'French', have you ever tried 'Vaponaute' juices? I've been dying to try them. They sound lovely. Have a lovely weekend in 'hot old Europe'.
I'm in hot old Ireland, btw. 👍🏼
Unfortunately no, but I had the chance to tried their very limited production Rda and God, I was amazed. I would highly recommend you to try their rba, but for liquide I really do not know, sorry. If you ever have the chance to try let me know bro, I diy most of my juice but I would like to try vaponaute liquide if I see some constructive feedback!
Peace to you brother, and have a good day ✌️
Perhaps it's a cost cutting exercise. Throw a load of sweetner in and get away with minimal flavour use.
