Help with venturing into tobaccos
submitted over 7 years ago by Prolly_

After I stopped smoking cigarettes the thought of a tobacco juice just didn't really catch my attention, at least up until I started getting into diy.

I see a lot of tobacco mixes that pop up here so I'm getting interested in trying to mix a couple and find what I might like. The only problem is I've only tried one tobacco juice, and it was an RY4 Almond Milkshake. Although it was good, it was just too rich for me to enjoy a whole tank of even after steeping.

Does anyone have some recommendations for a tobacco recipe that isn't rich, maybe something that lends itself to being a good beginner flavor to get me into tobaccos?

I like the thought of fruity tobaccos, and I looked at some on ATF, but I'm not really sure what the difference between all these tobaccos and RY4s are, so I can't judge if they'd be super rich on my own.

I definitely don't want a cigarette type of flavor so I know I can rule out those recipes, but I know a lot of tobaccos are described by comparisons to cigars, which I have no knowledge of. Maybe they're all supposed to be dark and rich and they're just not for me, but I thought I'd look for some recommendations. So throw me any flavors or link to recipes you've got for someone trying to explore some tobaccos that are on the brighter side.

I would suggest picking up the stuff to make Abuela. It’ll get you some good FLV tobaccos, you’ll have a recipe to mix them in right off the bat, and if you want to mess with some other fruits in there, it should take pretty well to a lot of different things. Or you could just leave the top note off and have yourself a cigar. Then if you want to start playing around with more tobaccos and take the deep plunge, I’ll be glad to help some more. But that should be a pretty good starting point.

This is super helpful, thanks! I'll grab the flavors for Abuela in my next order.

Abuela is a great one for sure, with the advantage of requiring less steeping time with its FLV tobaccos. I've been mixing a version of it regularly without the Mango and call it "Abuela Base". It's good by itself and good with other flavors taking the place of the mango. So far I've tried INW Marzipan, RF Molasses, TFA Kentucky Bourbon, NN Honey Tobacco and FLV Milk and Honey. The list of potential toppings is nearly endless. I make a big batch of Base and use that to make 10ml testers with different flavors added.

Since you're just starting with tobacco, I suggest reducing the tobacco flavorings by about 20% in the beginning and maybe adding 1% TFA Marshmallow if you'd like a sweeter vape.

That actually sounds good. That horrible peach flavor is my main issue with abuela. FA Marzipan would probably be enough to turn it to a desert tobacco, tho.

Damn that looks good fam but my wallet will be crying about 34 bucks of flavorah flavors...

Graham Cracker, Hazelnut, Oak/bourbon all work really well in tobacco flavors. I think INW French Pipe and Cuban Supreme are my favorite tobacco flavorings

Perhaps virginia tobacco, it's pretty light and sweet in my experiences. Maybe add some nut if you want to take it up a level.

A good start for you might be FLV Red Burley at 3-4%, maybe with .5-.75 INW DNB. It's a well rounded, slightly nutty tobacco, and it by itself is an ADV for me.

Obligatory inawera dark and black for pipe, and really the whole for pipe line. I have had people really like flavorah Kentucky blend in a recipe I made with some fw whiskey. Fa Maxx blend was one I went through a phase with, more chocolate than tobacco. I was a fan of inawera tobacco absolute Virginia. I am not a tobacco head though, so most of my personal experience is testing flavors and recipes.

I can recommend Cardinal (by same creator as Abuela), it's quite light and only has a couple of flavours so it's easy to mix.

I made some butterscotch graham tobacco that was the only tobacco flavor juice I have ever liked. If you google “butterscotch graham tobacco,” it should be the first hit. Can’t link directly since they also sell nicotine...

almond flavoring can be sickening after a while but the sweet tobacco type is probably what you’re looking for if you liked it at first.

try something lighter with RY4 like vanilla and caramel. i like mixing sugar cookie with ry4 and french vanilla. and if its too sweet to me i add a smokier tobacco like FLV Cured Tobacco

This might be a dumb question but do you think RY4 comes across as being dark when it's by itself? I assumed the richness from the juice I tried was coming from the RY4, but if almond can be sickening it definitely could've been that, especially since I had never had RY4 or almond before.

its pretty mild imo but i put RY4 in everything lol

The almond could have been marzipan. It is fucking insanely sweet (I use it like many use FA meringue, to sweeten a mix without adding sweetener) but good. I don't really like most RYs (JF RY4D is apparently good, being a caramel tobacco without the horrid vanilla, unlike unholy grail or RJ4. Unfortunately I ordered the last two I mentioned without realizing the vanilla off-taste was so strong)... but the idea of a sweet spiced tobacco is good. I like tobacco/chocolafe/cinnamon as a combo... I thing a ginger/chocolate/butterscotch tobacco would work quite nicely. I just have to test the mix.

I'd love to get FLV Ginger to work in a mix. I bought it for a remix of Longing and while I love the original, I almost couldn't stand the remix. Reminded me way too much of Orange Chicken and that sharp kind of spice note that keeps me from liking Orange Chicken. Maybe I just didn't realize that's what ginger tastes like. I never thought of using it with a tobacco flavor - maybe I can find something to do with the rest of the bottle I have.

First off... oh /u/chemicalburnvictim

Now, FLV Red Burley is a complex nutty tobacco, tRY with banana? FE Hongtashan supposedly has a cinnamon element, which would go well with apple or pear. FLV Connecticut Shade is based on the cigar wrapper leaf. Has a lot 9f complexity.. coffee and chocolate are commonly named so it would go well (in theory) with coconut (as would red burley). There's a lot of tobacco that gets mixed with fig/date/other bad fruits...

And if you're interested in trying a straight tobacco, Am4a is fairly good standalone, better with a mix. I'm sort of working on a mix with it that you may like. (Although you might want to dilute it down some from where I like it?)

Thanks! I'd definitely be down to try the recipe you're working on.

Check PMs. I consider myself a student at the feet 9f the master, when it comes to tobacco. So normally I would just say check out brigade (or one of CBV's other mixes) but.... /u/thelateoctober had a damn interesting mix a couple months ago that might appeal to you more. Of course, if you really want to try one of my creations... I would love a thought out review/feedback so I could improve my craft.

Feel free to shoot me a recipe too. I'm going to put an order together here next week or so and I'd like to try some of other peoples work as well as tweak my own.

Anything named "Cuban/cubano/etc." From any brand will invariably be a very mellow tobacco. I've tried all of them, and I can adv any of them as single flavor or as the main flavor :)

You gotta go super conservative with adding any sort of "accent" flavors, but as long as you don't over power the base cigar flavor, they go well with just about anything (they don't play well with other tobacco's or loranns).

Sweet, I'll definitely look into some recipes that use cuban flavors as the base. Thanks!

SuperConcentrated / Vape Zone / Flavor Express tobaccos. My favorites: RY4, Golden Virginia, Benson, Koolz, Marlborough.

Hangsen: Deluxe Tobacco at 8% (fantastic but expensive), Gold and Silver at 3%.

I haven't liked any FLV or INW tobaccos that I've tried. FA has a couple good ones like Dark Vapure and Perique. I've heard FA SOHO is great but pretty weak.

Your tastes in tobaccos are different from the majority of DIYers, since FLV and INW are obviously preferred by most experienced mixers.

Yup. I can describe FLV Red Burley in two words: chocolate perfume. I just got INW Dark for Pipe and Black for Pipe, looking forward to trying those.

Try this "VCT clone" (vanilla custard tobacco) One of my favorite ADV

PG dilutant - 20.10% VG dilutant - 70.00% French Vanilla Creme TPA - 1.50% Sweetener (Sucralose/Maltol) TPA - 1.00% Toasted Almond TPA - 0.70% Turkish TPA or Hangsen Turkish blend - 0.70% Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) - 6.00%

Let it breathe for the first couple of hours. Steep: 4 weeks

Also great as a 50/50 PG/VG mix - good at 2 weeks, best at 4.

No that crosses the spam line and the offers to buy or sell juice line, I think. Maybe I’m wrong, I dunno, I’m operating on zero sleep at all and am probably mentally retarded until I get some rest. But I removed the comment
