It's imPEARative that you check out this flavor of the Week!
submitted over 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is: PEAR

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

FA Pear around 0.5% is a decent alternative to sweetener in most fruit mixes. It's not super "peary" but it provides legit sweetness without the sucralose induced coil gunk.

It's also my choice for "juiciness " wherever most folks would lean on cactus. It's sweeter, and you don't have to do as much balancing.

Depending on the fruit, I've found FA Liquid Amber also helps in the juiciness department, as well as helping fruits not fade as much when mixed with creams. It isn't much by itself, but it is definitely a necessary "additive" to have on hand. Sort of like TFA Dragonfruit is to emulsifying.

Although at higher percentages, TFA Dragonfruit is phenomenal as a top note. I don't feel like FA Liquid Amber packs enough punch, by then again I've never tried it over 3% for fear it might become floral.

There is a German or better Bavarian sweet dish my grandma used to make.

It is called "Apfelkücherl". Sweet buttery dough around a slice of apple, deep fried and covered in sugar with cinnamon. Yeah exactly...very delicious. I tried quite a while to make it for vaping. Never quite worked, until I added some pear to the mix.

INW pear is great for enhancing apple flavors and make them pop!

The recipe:

  • FA Zeppola @ 3%

  • FA Cookie @ 1%

  • FA Cinnamon @ 1%

  • FA Fuji @ 3%

  • INW Pear @1%

edit: some may want it sweeter (not me), add CAP Supersweet to your liking.

FA cinnamon = cinnamon Ceylon? Or is it a separate flavor?

Also think I could sub tfa pear for inw? Sounds delish and I wanna try :) I agree about pears being excellent for apples, to me it gives a super nice juiciness with a bit of that grainy texture you get from that family of fruits

2 points

by Ernie_is_deadover 7 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

Cinnamon Ceylon probably. My bottle says "Zimt", so it's always a bit hard for me to tell :)

But as far as I know there is only 1 cinnamon flavour from FA.

As for TFA Pear: never tried it, TFA flavours are not very common here. From my experience I would say if you sub it, you will need to up the percentage. TFA seems no where near as strong as INW for most flavours.

I'll give it a go later and let you know how it works out :) Any recommended steep time?

I love TFA pear! My favorite recipe with it is what I call “Milk of the Cosmos” it is:

2% TFA Pear 2% FW Peach 3% FW Gummy Bear 3% FW Cantaloupe

It’s a delicious sweet-sour juice that leaves you with a watery mouthfeel, the kind you get when your salivary glands start acting up :p. The cantaloupe and peach give a great earthy sweetness. While the gummy bear and pear add a nice sour citrusy taste.

EDIT: changed a brand. Might be worth mentioning this is my take on Bad Drip labs “Don’t Care Bear” but without the shitty sweetener flavor.

Is that TPA Peach Juicy?

by davidthelegendyoungover 7 years ago

Uhhh just Peach. It’s actually a FW flavor though! Will edit original post

Ah okay. In that case I barely have any of the flavours. I have substitutes from other companies but idk how it would turn out

Compeared to some of your other puns, I think this week’s is pearfect. I’m also a little tired, so my judgement might be impeared.

Also, I have no pear flavors, just a couple more bad puns. Pear with me, folks!

I’m done now.

I’ve almost thrown INW Pear in the cart a few times. I can’t resist forever.

Pear tobacco, you say?

Well, I think it's a reasonable challenge. If I had INW Smoked Plum I would probably start with that, but Yakima Hops will have to do to dry the FA Pear...

2 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Hmm... thinking about it...

2% TFA Pear
1.5% FE Hongtashan
.15% FLV Rich Cinnamon
.75% FLV Yakima hops
1.5% FLV Red Burley
.75% FA Pear
.25% FA oakwood
.6% FA Whisky

Should work. Gotta test it, but first I have to check what I have (dunno I have tfa pear atm) but if so, in a month I gotta remember...(originally I left out the red burley, but I kinda think of red burley the way CBV thinks about DNB...)

#Impeared Judgemint

This was my all day for a few years and I sold a boatload of it as house brand for a local shop. It's easy, uncomplicated, and cheap.

  • TPA Pear 5%
  • TPA Bavarian Cream 5%
  • TPA Peppermint 1%
  • Menthol to taste

I've screwed around with it a lot, but I keept going back to the simple 5,5,1. You can swap the cream out with custard or add coconut to get it closer to Seduce's Snake Oil / Impearmint. If you want to dirty it up a bit add 1% TPA DK Tobacco or 0.5% VZ SC Dunhill.

by bigtidderover 7 years ago

This is a pretty good recipe that I need to remix sometime. I was going to post my old notes on it here but I won't since I split the pear 50/50 between TPA and INW, then subbed FA Peppermint for TPA. I'll have to grab the TPA Peppermint sometime and remix as intended. Thanks for posting it!

I had FA Pear and found it crisp and bright, but found it faded at 3% in a mix (Strawberry/Pear for the fruit). I've picked up TFA and INW's but haven't SFT them yet, and saw the combos from before.

Great timing.

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Yeah FA Pear is a beauty but it refuses to be the main flavor in a mix for me too.

2 points

by Wayne0over 7 years ago

So true. Brightness remains but the Pear runs. I'm a wanna mix me some solid Pear dominant, with some cream, and Caramel when I'm done.

3 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Why not try Commodore Peary? For those who don't follow links...

6.5% TFA Pear
3.5% FW Bavarian Cream
.5% FW Caramel Candy
3.5% CAP VCV1
1.5% CAP French Vanilla
1% CAP Coconut

by Trevorxgageover 7 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

Anytime I've tried to make FA pear be a main flavor is get's soapy on me. Pears in general taste sorta soapy/perfumy to me so I just kinda gave up on making them a main note in anything.

1 points

by Wayne0over 7 years ago

I used it up to 3.5% with my Strawberry. No soap to me. Loved it for a week, before it ran away.

3 points

by br4d24over 7 years ago

Only have experience with FA Pear at the moment. But it is a wonderful concentrate! I usually enjoy using around 1-2%. To me it brings a nice juicy natural kind of pear flavor to a recipe. You can also bend it with apple flavors or accent it with apple flavors. 0.5% fa Fuji has worked nicely to add a bit more brightness and a sharpness to the pear in my experience.

I would love for someone to drop some knowledge on TFA pear, I just picked it up and want to do some mixing with it tonight! Haven't looked into it all that much yet.

Steep it.

1 points

by br4d24over 7 years ago

do you recommend steeping it because its harsh off of a shake and vape or does it change after a steep?

1 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

For me it's a little harsh without any steep. Needs a few days. Some say overnight is enough.

I just want to give a shout out to Charlie Noble and /u/THUNDERRGIRTH for releasing Commodore Pearry about a year ago. It's actually the first recipe that I tried any sort of Pear. I'm not a fan of v2 flavors personally but I think they made it work in this one. Maybe if we all pray to the DIY gods they'll release another one someday.

2 points

Commodore was one of my favorites. I miss just being able to grab a bottle off the shelf. I'm glad that you're enjoying it!!

Holy shit -> 6.5% Pear sounds high normally, but not for TFA. Does it fade? I'd hope not, being a commercial recipe.

Go to the blog and ask for the release of the chocolate mousse recipe. Maybe if enough people ask...

by vigg-o-ramaover 7 years ago

I was told it was a snake oil clone.. I call mine Snake Oil Jr... if you mix this , call it whatever you like.

4% TFA Bavarian Cream

2% TFA Pear

3% TFA marshmallow

1% TFA coconut extra

Always tastes funky at first, and then I toss the bottle in a drawer. Never fails that I find a 6 month old bottle of it stashed away and after the first taste I am making a new bottle to lose in a drawer for a while. There is a bit of EM in the Bavarian Cream, and it tends to sweeten up the pear and mellow out the whole concoction with time.

One of my daily drivers for a while, now I will have to look for that last bottle I made a while back.

3 points

by Up2myheadover 7 years ago

I vaped almost solely this for 2 years.

Burned myself out now, but damn was it satisfying.

by vigg-o-ramaover 7 years ago

heh. same for me for about a year, and then I found CAP Harvest Berry. I mix it at 15%, and thats it. nothign more, nothing less and with the exception of the occasional Snake Oil Jr, I am good to go. More than once I have bought 16oz of concetrate for my own use. LOL.

I'm working on a pear/pineapple/booze mix at the moment (well, i've bought the flavours) and I was wondering if anyone had any insight on how FA pear and INW pear might play together. Is this a pairing that has been used before, and if so, is there a recommended ratio? It will be paired with CAP golden pineapple, so hopefully I can get them to a place where one isn't drowning out the other.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

2% FA Pear + 1.75% INW Pear + ?? CAP Golden Pineapple (I have no idea how much it will take to balance with that pear)

2 points

by lNTERLINKEDover 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

Yeah that's what I'm worried about, as CAP golden pineapple doesn't seem like the strongest flavour. Do you have a stronger pineapple recommendation that might help me balance it out a bit?

4 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I would first try just cranking the CAP golden until it works. If it starts throwing out off flavors before it actually works, then maybe pull it back down and try beefing it up with a very light touch of TFA Pineapple, like less than 1%.

1 points

by davidthelegendyoungover 7 years ago

TFA has a great strong pineapple flavor, but it is a LITTLE sweetener heavy.

by SteepingTakesTimeover 7 years agoYellow Cake Apologist

I think FW Pear is under rated. You have to be careful with it, but it can round off an apple flavor pretty nicely. I think it's a great companion to FA Fuji.

It unfortunately doesn't hold up well as a pear flavor.

I don't know why but fa pear makes everything I use it in seem flat I guess. Like it takes all the brightness away.

Wrath of the Bugpear

  • CAP Cucumber - 0.5%

  • TPA Dragonfruit - 1%

  • TPA Hibiscus - 2.5%

  • JF Honeydew Melon - 1%

  • TPA Huckleberry - 0.3%

  • TPA Pear - 4%

This was my take on a floral and punched up version of all that Honey Pearry nonsense.

That percentage for Huckleberry is not an error. I’ve had to tweak that recipe and others using that flavor many times in order to find a useable amount for it. Anything over 0.4% and it absolutely annihilates other flavors in a mix. Keeping it at 0.3% seems to be the sweet spot.

2 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Pear always seemed to be a flavor to use as a base or additive, not a central note. Just a general fruity/juicy note. Possibly a downside to only having FA Pear.

2 points

Which pear tastes most like a pear jelly Bean?

I have tfa and fa. Tfa is Def. More candy like, but is there any spot on fake pear candy flavor?

Fa pear is a great additive, and it won't do weird things if you accidentally put too much in.

I've read people claiming to like TFA Pear Candy. Maybe it's worth a shot?

1 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

The SC Pear from Vaping Zone is the most candied pear I've ever tried, but it's more like a pear-flavored sucker or if you can imagine what jolly rancher pear would taste like if that existed, rather than a jelly bean. Maybe if you mixed some CAP Jelly Candy with that?

2 points

by Jigsaw314over 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Didn't think anyone used it.... I love it! I find it plays well with lots of other flavors, so it definitely has a place in the arsenal.
