Weekly Discussion Thread - Week of June 25, 2018
submitted over 7 years ago by ApexifiedSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Welcome, Everyone.

This is your thread to chat about anything remotely DIY-related that might not fit into one or our other Weekly/Monthly threads or that you’re just not comfortable posting to the front page.

  • Want to show off your most recent or first flavor order?

  • Found a cool new way to organize your flavors?

  • Shout out a mixer here who helped you get started?

  • Theorycraft an idea for a mix?

  • Talk about your DIY journey thus far?

  • Haven’t started DIY yet and want to talk about it?

And pretty much anything else… anything goes, even if it’s only mixing related because you mix and want to chat with other mixers.

DIY_eJuice Discord is also a thing, if you’re into that.

Current Weekly/Monthly threads (Archive of all weekly threads):

  • Weekly New Mixers Thread - This has been and will remain the ‘Safe Zone’ for any beginner questions. While it was once the place you posted after your post was [removed] or after a Mod/Sidebar-nazi directed you there, the New Mixers Thread remains an absolute judgement free zone where there are no stupid questions and everyone there wants to help.

  • Weekly ‘Suggest a Recipe for my Flavors’ Thread - You picked a bunch of flavors that either sounded good or were in recipes that looked good but now you want more ideas for what to do with them? Ask here and get suggestions.

  • Weekly ‘What are you Vaping?’ Thread - Talk about the latest recipes you’ve mixed up whether they’re yours or someone else’s.

  • Flavor of The Week - Every week the community gathers to discuss one flavor category and share recipes, notes, ideas, advice, pairings and more. After that the Noted crew (/u/ID10-T, /u/mlNikon & /u/CheebaSteeba) try as many flavors in that category as they can and discuss their impressions, opinions and notes.

  • Throwback Thursday - The newest weekly thread/project to revamp and improve the resources in our sidebar with feedback from the community.

  • FAQ Friday - Where I (and a few other contributors) tackle one Frequently Asked Question as comprehensively as possible.

  • Monthly Recipe Thread - Share your recipes here with or without development notes.

  • Monthly Clone Request Thread - Want a recipe or idea for how to mix your favorite commercial juice? This is the place to ask. Check out FAQ Friday: Clone Requests for some ideas on how best to ask and get closer to accomplishing your remix.

  • Monthly Clone Challenge - A community driven effort to tackle one clone request at a time.

Highlights from last week: /u/noilian dropped the 4th (posted) iteration of their Heisenberg Clone in a cloning journey reminiscent of /u/captaincannibal’s Shurb Experience--RIP Captain, I just noticed he deleted his account :(

And it must have been Clone Week with /u/safere stumbling on the missing ingredient to complete their Grape Drank Clone and /u/Rileyswims posting a remix of Summertime aptly named Fuji Funk. I mean, that’s a funky list of ingredients with a bunch of great notes that make me want to mix it up. Last but not least, and rounding out the recipes that were in the top 10 upvoted posts of last week /u/HORSE_GAME shared with us their first successful recipe Cool as a Dewcumber.

And an honorable mention goes out to /u/wh1skeyk1ng for Rhubarb Delight which I am currently vaping and was posted 7 days ago as of writing this. I guess it’s technically from the week before but it’s really good and I didn’t do this last week.

What do you think of highlighting posts/recipes here every week? Or maybe a monthly digest post some time down the road where I highlight some recipes as well as posts and even great comments that sometimes get lost inside a downvoted post. Just brainstorming…

Let’s discuss!

I had this post ready to go before finding out that /u/wh1skeyk1ng had decided to drop out of his position as moderator. The fact that he did is public information, the reasons are private.

But I would just like to take this opportunity to thank him for his dedication to this subreddit and the countless hours he spent in the last several years trying to make it a better place to learn. He has contributed a significant number of flavor reviews and answered a staggering amount of new mixer questions and I for one hope that he will continue to do so forever, in spite of not being a mod.

Thank you /u/wh1skeyk1ng

I personally think he should have stuck around. He was making an effort to turn over a new leaf. The best way to handle people that don't like you (especially people that wear kids-r-us tank tops) is to hang around and piss in their cereal a bit every morning.

u/wh1skeyk1ng and I had some issues but it's all water under the bridge and we've accepted each other's apologies and moved on like grown men. Other people should heed the example.

Highlighting posts from throughout the week is an awesome idea. Feels like a news recap of all the best stuff!

I'm really enjoying the vibe around the sub again. Starting to feel more like a club of mixers hanging together and chatting and less like a bunch of awkward students asking their professors for help 😌

Working on a bunch of new tobacco mixes this week, got some "cheap and cheerful" ones to test ATM, and got some more quality concentrates coming today and tomorrow to try my hand at some more complex mixes. Compiled a shitton of notes on tobaccos too. Probably the most serious I've been about mixing in a while. Does everyone do this or are there others like me out there that just kinda mix on a whim and have some decent success sometimes?

Occasionally I just throw together flavors I think should work together. I figure at least half the time that works out. I tend to do a bit better when I have something specific in mind for the mix.

3 points

by amouthforwarover 7 years ago

okay, so I'm not alone :p

Most of my experience in terms of knowing what flavors go together is just trial and error, I typically never do single flavor testers until recently (tobacs are complex as fuck so I kinda have to). Helps me find some oddly satisfying combinations though!

Tobaccos are tricky to blend.. you need to know what flavors there are to know what they work with. Luckily there is a great resource here for such info...

I love the idea of highlighting things in this post. Very, very cool. I like to think I read pretty much everything in this sub, but it’s a good reminder for me at the end/beginning of a new week. Let’s keep doing that.

This sub is a really fun place to hang out now. I like that we can kind of just shoot the shit and feel like I’m chilling with a bunch of fellow mixers.

Thanks, I think the idea is cool too and I'm glad other people are on board. I like to think I keep up with reading everything here but I also often find myself vaguely remembering some comment or post that was really on point for answering a question or brining up in a discussion but just can't find it. So this seemed like a way to gather those up week by week in order to have a reference of sorts.

I recently discovered a lazy way to ballpark some mix ideas.

Ive been super busy with work and life and projects and blah. Moved into a new tiny cabin and condensed things. My mixing station went in a box and my single flavors in ziploc bags. Just handfuls of over a hundred 15mls in tons of tiny bags, a few flavors at a time.

Sorting through them the past few days has been a delight. Some smell fairly lame and a bit nasty. But. Several of them smell absolutely wondrous and should serve as a potential playground for learning and experimenting.

I'm fairly certain this will change the DIY juice industry forever.

Have been flavour testing inw creme brulee at 2% and find it has a really creamy cheesecake taste to it. Anybody else find that?

I'm not gone on CAP NY Cheesecake, tastes like smelly socks. However, inw creme brulee reminds me of the European "baked" style cheesecakes, which I like. Really nice. It has lovely caramel sugar vibe too.

Hopefully inawera don't reformulate the flavour or I'll crack up.

INW Creme Brulee is a damn tasty flavor, though I don't recall it reminding me of cheesecake. Now that I have your power of suggestion, I might have to re-sample it.

I'm looking forward to trying their "Yes, We Cheesecake". Strange name, but that is what INW is calling it. I've read some good things about it.

I'm with you on the CAP NY being a little funky. Lots of disappointing mixes I've made with that one. Lately I've just been using TFA Cheesecake Graham Crust when I'm after "cheesecake" because it's much more workable.

By the way. I hear your leaving Reddit. Really sorry to hear that. You'll be missed. Thanks for all the great reads and sound advice you gave over the past year; it helped out a lot of mixers who were starting out.

I tried Tootall's recipe on ATF. 3% INW Custard 2% INW Creme Brulee 1% Vanilla Shisha. It's F$$$$n amazing. Even as a S&V

Can't wait to try INW Yes Cheesecake. Great recommendation.

So I'm about to go through and add flair to the posts from the last 24 hours that don't have it. I've been trying to keep up with it, in order to make finding stuff a little easier. Curious what people think of the current set of flair and what might be added to the list...

Here are the options now:

  • Nic
  • Supplies
  • Recipe
  • Steeping
  • Meta
  • 100% VG Recipe
  • Other
  • Vendor
  • Mixing Tip
  • Mixing Tutorial
  • Flavor Review
  • Clone Recipe
  • Nic Safety
  • Safety
  • Mixing Methods
  • Nude Nicotine sucks
  • Breaking rules here
  • Don't Do This

It's not always easy to pigeonhole a post into one of those. Started adding Flavor Question & Troubleshooting as flair. Let me know if you have any suggestions or just want to point out the redundancy in the current set (Recipe, 100% VG Recipe, Clone Recipe...)

"Stupid Idea" - used for questions about how to ruin a juice with heat/aeration, or using 500mg+ nic source, or trying to use caffeine (other than for bitter flavor) and so on.

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 7 years agoMixologist

That’s exactly what we are trying to get away from in the sub juthinc. Please stop

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

You don't think anyone else isn't already tired of a couple topics that repeatedly end up as their own threads that shouldn't even be asked?

Maybe if enough of the community would step up and downvote the same questions that are asked over and over, it would help. Or maybe we need a actual FAQ that's visible to all? I dunno. Like I've said, repeatedly, I like increased willingness to post... I just don't like it when that means the shit gets tolerated along with the useful. Isn't there a middle ground here?

1 points

by Apexifiedover 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Seems unnecessarily negative and kind of already covered by "Don't Do This"

1 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

"Unnecessarily negative"? Does that exist?

"Don't do this" probably does cover it, tho. (And I'm cool with giving caffeine questions the 'placebo' flair on a regular basis.)

1 points

by garamasalaover 7 years ago

I don't think Breaking Rules and Don't Do This are necessary. If someone is breaking rules just let them know and take any necessary actions. The shitstorm a few days ago is an example of why, that person probably doesn't feel encouraged to post again. It's not the end of the world if a rule is broken (mostly) and we, as mods and as a community, need to stop jumping on people like that.

Don't Do This just seems like shaming inexperienced people.

I agree. Consider them gone (once I’m not on mobile) do you happen to have any suggestions for what can take their place?

I'll have a think about but I can't think of replacements at the moment.

I like this highlighting posts/recipes thing, thank you for taking the time to do that.

HS DJ Rum is not a rum flavor. It's a clove tobacco. Which makes perfect sense if you think about it for a second. That's all I have to say about that.

2 points

by Apexifiedover 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Honestly I have no idea why I sent you that flavor because it's been so long. I probably just had an extra bottle sitting there and reached for the closest flavor to fill it up.

Minor point: the links really should be updated. I noticed the 'what can I make' link is to a ten day old post. FotW is even more out of date. Not sure about the others.

3 points

by Apexifiedover 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

Major failure. A very boring but pertinent fact about me: I work graveyard shift. That's why FAQ Friday is posted in the afternoon, after I've had time to ingest more than one cup of coffee, and not in the morning when I'm fighting the urge to sleep on my keyboard.

I also happen to use something that converts to reddit formatting so I had basically copied over the new part that hadn't been formatted and when I went to copy over the formatted half with all the updated links, I picked the wrong tab. I even noticed one was wrong but... failed to look further.

TL;DR Thanks. I fixed it.

A few weeks ago I made a bunch (13) 30mL bottles of various mixes. Ever since then, I feel a bit of pressure to vape faster so I can try out the others. Normally I only make a few that's good for the duration I'll need it (say I make 3-4 every 3 weeks, with half of those being long steepers and the other half snv. Now I find I vape more and while I am enjoying them, this bit of anxiety is gnawing at me.

I'm also a bit pressured to get more RDAs. I have 3 mods to ensure I get variety for the week, one being a fruit/drink variety, another a custard/creamy one, and the last being tobaccos. I find that I tend to finish them more or less at the same time, so I need more RDAs as a "roster" so to speak when I change flavors (I only clean my attys when I change flavors, not during rewicking. There was a time I was taking apart and cleaning 3 attys (down to their individual peek insulators) while wicking 2 new ones, and it got really tiring. I have an ultrasonic cleaner on the way so I hope it helps with that.

Just want to say that sometimes, while in the fun of vaping, I forget the upkeep cost (of time and effort) to maintain and clean your gear.

3 points

by amouthforwarover 7 years ago

Personally I rarely do a full breakdown cleaning like you mentioned, unless I'm cleaning RDAs with copper parts. A good dry burn + rinse or two, and rewick is usually enough to get any old flavor out of an atty for me. That said I do have a lot of setups and tend to rotate through all of them throughout the week. It makes testing and swapping juices easy, but I do try to limit myself to two different juices in a given day. For the sake of conserving the others and properly letting them steep yknow?

But I mean... That's why I like DIY, I can chain vape like a mahfk and it's not even a big problem I can just mix more of the same juice right into the same bottle I just killed!

2 points

by thelateoctoberover 7 years ago

Man I'm the same... I hardly ever do a complete breakdown. Maybe once every few months. I use a pulse for tasting, and usually just drip until the last flavor is gone. Most times I can get a good enough idea of a flavor even before the last is completely gone. My daily driver is a limitless plus, I just wait till it's empty and fill with whatever I want next. Obviously dry burn, rinse with water, and rewick every 4-5 days, because I use 95% tobaccos and they gunk up pretty quick.

I think highlighting posts and clone recipes from the previous week is a great idea. On another note, I just made my first order from nicriver, possiblly went a bit overboard, as I ordered 22 flavors to start with. It wss a mix of the top voted "first flavours" + flavours from a few top-rated recipes I picked out from atf and elr. Lol, just hope my juice lasts until it gets here so I don't have to buy any more.

1 points

by Apexifiedover 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

That's awesome. What recipes did you pick out?

2 points

by graystorm01over 7 years ago

started with super duper strawberry (forgot to write down who's recipe this one is), this will probably be my first mix. Then i also have mustard milk by /u/fizzmustard. "godmilk" by /u/skiddlzninja. Blueberry Bliss, Coconut Cocaine by SANTA714MIXER, and last but not least, Mother of Dragons Milk by /u/ID10-T I'm trying to start with a good mix of fruit, and desert type flavours, with a couple of the "helper" flavours, like CAP Sucralose, FA meringue, FA sweet cream.

1 points

by wh1skeyk1ngover 7 years agoThanks for reading this flair

Mother of Dragons is amazing. It really showcases TFA Dragonfruit and the mouth feel+taste is unlike anything I've tried in a vape.

Highlighting the posts/recipes in a thread like this is an awesome idea.

I'll sort by Top of the Week about once a week in several subreddits, since I can't keep up with them daily and it's a good way to catch up on some of the top posts. A simple digest is even better, upvotes mostly just catch the more obvious things and it's nice to have a human element. I wish more subreddits had that sort of thing every week honestly.

Hi! I'm looking to buy my first pod system for easy travel and stealth vape. How is the JUUL in flavor compared to others? Does it ever taste burned? Is there one that is considered better in flavor?

Anyone have any information on July 4th sales? From what I can find Nicotine River did one last year at the end of June but I haven't got anything yet.

250ml of 48mg nic or 125ml of 100mg of nic, I make 6mg juice if that helps and i vape around 30 ml per week max

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Two points... price difference? More importantly, using 48mg source to make 6mg product requires your nic source to be 12.5% of your mix. Personally I would only use 48mg VG nic or 100mg PG nic. (If I had a good source of 100mg 50/50 I would use it if I was mixing higher than 3mg... but 3% isn't that bad. Unless the recipe involved TFA White Chocolate and some of the really weak VT flavors. For something like that I'd be doing everything I could to minimize the PG content.

1 points

by thebigchileabout 7 years ago

125ml of 100ml cost 14.99 plus shipping and 250ml of 48mg cost 13.19$ you can see the price difference its small and I can chose vg or pg but I might go vg

2 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

I'd like to point out that vg based nic can be difficult to work with. It's thicker and can be prone to hotspots. It's recommended that you shake it vigorously to remove hotspots.

This is why most of us use 100mg PG based.

1 points

by juthincabout 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

If you want to use VG nic, 48mg is the way to go.

1 points

by kindgroundabout 7 years ago

What nic strength are JUUL pods? They say 6% but I see info from a year ago that says 50%. I'm trying to mix with salts for the first time for a pod device user.
