Let's take a minute for the DIY community
submitted over 7 years ago by AwesomeDave84

I had a thought today that may be beneficial for all people in the DIY Community new and vetted. I started DIYing about 6 months ago and I'm loving every minute of it. I learned so much from the different online communities of DIY'rs. So much useful and helpful information that has enabled me to really make some good recipes, as well as borrow recipes for others. I must say that in all, everyone does a pretty good job of sharing what they know. I think that we can take it even one step further from what we do now.

As we all know there are thousands and thousands of flavors on the market today. Every time I order a new flavor I try to do as much research as possible so that I'm not just walking in blindly. As I'm sure a lot of people do as well. I think that while we're buying is the most important time to be able to compare flavors. Every vendor has a rating system for each individual flavor. Most of the flavors don't even have a star rating given. I think that it might be worthwhile for us as DIY'rs to just take one minute to either type out a flavor note or copy and paste somebody else's flavor note, if it's accurate, to the review. Maybe even adding our sourcing if we're copying and pasting. I know that in my personal experience it took me a little while to even discover Reddit DIY e-juice.

I'm sure it's not just me that finds it a little frustrating sometimes, if not monotonous, to find such flavor notes.

I'd like to end by saying THANK YOU to everyone who contributes to Reddit, DIY or die, YouTube in general, and anyone else I missed. This is truly been a life-changing experience for me. After over 20 years of smoking cigarettes, I've finally kicked it for good because of all of you.

Also not to mention this: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/03/21/2018-05655/regulation-of-flavors-in-tobacco-products

We can beet this!

You know, I sometimes feel guilty about not leaving reviews on the websites I buy them from. I think the main issue is that I get the email asking me to review my last order just a few days after I got it in the mail. They should give me about a month before sending that so I know how the flavor tastes at different stages. But maybe I’ll dedicate some time on my lunches to go through and leave some notes and rate since I always get a little upset when things don’t have reviews, but I’m part of the problem.

Those were my exact same thoughts. And that's why I made the post. More often than not our thoughts are going to be very similar to a lot of other people.

I try to leave meaningful reviews, but when the top rated ones on the shops are merely one-word bullshit like "good." or "[Shop Name] is awesome! Great customer service, great prices, fast shipping AAAA++++++-+-++", then I don't give much weight to the shop's review system... I google before buying a new flavor, or (dare I say it) jump on ELR and see what other people say about it.

I will try to get some decent reviews up on my vendor's shops more often.

I agree. It's a load of crap when people review the shop and not the flavor. Just don't write anything at all if not going to take it seriously

Also take a look at our flavor review wiki-lots and lots of great info in there. I always read the comments as well since other people sometimes have differing opinions or additional information.

I always just leave the emails in my inbox and go back after a month or two.

I've got some time on my hands, and considering how tired I am of seeing the old reviews on ecx from 2015 of people saying they vape flavorings at 25%, I might just go do a bunch of reviews for some of my favorite and least favorite flavors.

My issue is that I don't single test my flavors typically, I just use a lot of other people's notes from here, elr, and atf and go from there. So I don't feel like my reviews will be incredibly helpful, but there's a handful of concentrates I've gotten really handy with so if my two cents helps someone make a purchase decision, I'm all for it.

Absolutely. Flavor pairings are equally as critical as single flavors. That's mostly how I'm learning as well. Every little bit helps in these regards

You know, I was thinking that maybe if it was okay with posters like ID10-T to copy and paste their flavor notes. They seem to be pretty well respected in this forum.

I've seen a few reviews on ECX where people copy-pasta'd some flavor notes from here or ELR, as long as you cite the reviewer it should be alright but best to ask for permission I guess!

Nothing like seeing a 5 star review only to see a bunch of bullshit, it’s so disappointing and ultimately very confusing lol...So many of the reviews on ecx are fake and makes me so 😡... why put schills in to rate? Or schill it yourself whatever I know fake reviews when I see them and not only am I insulted, I feel a bit defrauded, so new reviews would be awesome and if anyone knows those guys there or works there tell them shame on you and knock it off 😩😂...

You hit the nail on the head. It would be nice if they just change the format on how you review the flavors all together. Maybe like a survey Style.

Going a step further...

I wish that people would write proper reviews on ATF or ELR as well when they mix a recipe. I am guilty of it but I am trying to do better. A lot of times a mix may have never gotten mixed and thrown out if there weren't just 2 reviews that are a couple of years old.

I totally agree. I've been making some mistakes with that as well
