Red up on Watermelon? It's the Flavor of the Week!
submitted over 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a category of flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is: WATERMELON

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Next week's flavor will be: Menthol and Coolants

The week after that will be: Distilled Spirits

The week after that will be: Pear

I have had very little luck with Watermelon. Either the it tastes too much like chemicals or is too weak. I have tried to recreate a couple of flavors that I bought that were good, Tigers Blood and Watermelon ice. I didn't take notes on how I made the Tigers blood when I made a good one and haven't been able to recreate it. The watermelon ice was a debacle. I have CAP Double Watermelon and Inawera Watermelon. I've tried the CAP Double several times and it has always disappointed me. CAP Sweet Watermelon was much better but still kind of weak so I sort of chucked it into some recipes and wasted it. I haven't touched the Inawera because it smells pretty intense and more like the rind than a candy watermelon. If I get a chance to mix some of the inawera up on it's own, I'll reply here again.

The watermelon you want is Loranne’s. Of course get the colorless version. Works well with inawera strawberry for Tigers blood.

Here’s a base you can start with:

  • 4% loranne watermelon

  • 3% inawera strawberry

Then add coconut and/or menthol if you want

Off topic, but good to see you are still lurking! Looking forward to more TWO.

There isnt much mention about MF brand around here. I havent ordered a single one, didnt know when they came out of it was just another hype-train. Care to drop your top 3 or 4, and where you get them from? So bored with everything else....

I don't know which version of INW Watermelon NicRiver sells, but I don't like it. I've been told numerous times to lower the percentage. I've come to the conclusion, I don't like it at any percentage. It's not watermelon to me. It tastes like soap or some kind of deodarant fragrance.

FA Watermelon is nice around 4%. It comes alive with just a little INW Cactus. I usually add a drop of it in my RTA (5ML).

I guess I kinda like Purilum's Watermelon for a Jolly Rancher style candy watermelon. I tried LorAnn too but it's not as good. It tasted musky in comparison. PUR is a cleaner flavor but not sweet by itself.

I got Caps Sweet Watermelon but can hardly taste it. I know watermelon is supposed to be delicate and have not much flavor. But this one was just sweet nothingness up to 15% for me. Maybe its old or it's just me.

I also have RF and Jungle but haven't tried them out much.

Had a similar experience with Cap's double watermelon. Tried it up to 8% and it was still barely there

I agree , Purilum's Watermelon beat out LA's for me . I also like candy watermelon flavor either TFA's or FW , FA's is probably most realistic.

My one watermelon recipe:

RF Taffy Base SC - 1%

RF Watermelon SC - 1.75%

Give it a week to let that taffy come out and shine and it’s amazing!

INW WG Watermelon is still the only one I have. It’s not bad I suppose, but I never use it. I reckon I don’t mix a whole lot of things that make me think, “Damn, I should add some watermelon to this.”

Only recipe I used it for was Spiced Up Strap On for Mixers Club.

Perhaps I’ll follow this thread and pick up another watermelon. Juice I got with my first ego pen was a watermelon jolly rancher flavor that was pretty good from what I remember, so maybe I’ll chase that. Probably not, but maybe.

> watermelon jolly rancher flavor

Probably just a lot of LA Watermelon and some sweetener.

No way, man, this was premium e-liquid.

Not sure if I need that /s or not, but just in case, there it is.

LA watermelon? Shit is vile. Doesn't taste at all like watermelon.
Then again, I don't think I ever had a watermelon jolly rancher. Maybe they're vile too, so it works?

I've tried to like LA Watermelon but I just can't. I get a weird metallic off-taste about halfway through exhale no matter what the recipe or %.

I am trying fa red summer at the moment and I really like the taste of it. But everything except some kanzi with an industry standard dose of sacrulose seem to come out harsh. And to be honest I'm not a big fan of Kanzi I'm not a good mixer at all so it's probably not the flavours fault. Can someone recommend me some recipe that you one would use it in?

Also digging that Viserion Mr ID10-T. Bav. cream & vanilla swril combo is also one of my favourite creams besides that vbic substitute made out of fa cream fresh, cap french vanilla and tfa vanilla bean gelato. And that ws-23 man. All hail cooling agents!

Also next week looks mighty fine considering the temperatures. The days just seem to start with sweating and end with more sweating right now.

Here’s a recipe from Inertia Creeping w FA watermelon ..( I sux at formatting bear me plz 😩😂)

Summer Breeze

Tfa Juicy peach 2% Tfa Pomegranate deluxe 1% Lorann Strawberry 2% Fa Watermelon 6% Fw Bavarian Cream 1%

I have written sucralose 1% and a 10% solution of Citric Acid @ .25%... so some Capella super sweet 1% or Tfa 2% etc... I’ve not had Lorann strawberry but I don’t see why any strawberry of your choosing couldn’t b subbed there and/ or BC if u don’t have FW’s... I say that like it’s my recipe, lol, but it is not. I figured someone would ask and if Inertia is Creeping maybe he could give us better advice but until then you’re stuck w me 😩😂....

I luvluvluv watermelon everything so I have many different watermelon and here’s my best attempt at what I like. ( I’ll save you the why’s, lol, mainly because it’s probably just me parroting what I’ve heard because I personally can’t differentiate rhind, peel, veggie like and green and I think that’s most of the yuck watermelon off flavors...idk? ) Again...I sux at formatting...my apologies. 😬

Likes - Tfa Watermelon Fa Watermelon Fw Candy Watermelon Capella Double Watermelon Purilum Watermelon Flavorah Watermelon Capella Sweet Watermelon Inawera Watermelon Lorann Watermelon

Dislikes - Fa Red Summer Watermelon RFSC Watermelon OOO Watermelon candy rocks fizz

Unfortunately, I’ve not yet been successful creating a good Watermelon vape but one day...haaa, maybe. These are in no particular order, just likes and dislikes.

Medicine flower watermelon is really good if you’re into this profile. It’s got a slight hint of rind to it, but it strangely isn’t off-putting at all. I mix it sometimes with some MF Vanilla & Strawberry

MF Lemon, Wild Raspberry, and Caramel are really good too.

I went to pizza express last night and saw a drink called watermelon chill. I instantly thought of the juice of the same name by elements...

It was watermelon, apple, strawberry and mint. I'm going to knock this up really soon, but I wanna start spitballing before I do. What would you do?

The only recipe I feature watermelon in is my Feline Plasma. Tried a few others and they tasted like ass. LA is my winning watermelon.

Feline Plasma
Coconut Cap-2%
Strawberry Ripe TPA-2.25%
Sweet Coconut Flv-2.25%
Sweet Strawberry Cap-1.5%
Watermelon LA-3%
Max vg.
Vapin it right now thinkin some ws-23 could be great.

#Cool Melon

  • Cool Mint (CAP) @ 1%
  • Double Watermelon (CAP) @ 1%
  • Menthol (TPA) @ 0.75%
  • Watermelon (TPA) @ 4%
  • Sweetener (Sucralose) (FW) @ 0.25%

In my search for fruit that pair well with mint/menthol, I settled on melons for now. After 4 batches I find that the 1:4 ratio of CAP double WM and TPA WM works best for me.

This one bites the sinuses, but the melon and menthol work lovely together. A kind of magic happens that pronounces the sweet melon notes really good.

Give two days to steep, as the menthol really needs to settle down a little.

I started adding a touch of Sucralose with v3 by request of a tester, it did not hurt the mix so I keep it for now.

edit: spelling

Did this up a while back. Personally, I just can't get past the LA Watermelon, but for those who don't mind it:

#The Habs (aka Crap On Ice) 3.5% FLV Cranberry
1.5% FA Fuji Apple
3% LA Watermelon
1% WS-3
1% WS-5
1% WS-23

It's cold. It's candy(ish). It's crap.

*note: this level of cooling is only for those who've built up some tolerance

Ginger and florals should be good.

Mango... not so much. Unless someone knows one that doesn't have that horrid peach taste to it.

You tried FLV Mango with TFA Jackfruit? The Jackfruit seems to help.

Reka Ripe Mango is banging. But near impossible to get unless you are distro size. 5x5 liter min order from them. So untill a big distro picks them up we will have no malaysian flavor joy.

Capella Double Watermelon gives me headaches (just like FA Juicy Strawberry). Can anyone explain why? Also, FA Watermelon seems to lose its flavor quickly. I bought it some months ago and I cannot really taste watermelon anymore when I use it.

2 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

It may have been old stock when you bought it.

2 points

by Laserbabzover 7 years ago

I haven't done that much with watermelon yet, but i have this recipe so far that i find pretty pleasing.

  • TPA Watermelon Candy 5%
  • FA Red Summer 2%
  • FA White Peach 2%
  • TPA Koolada 0.5-1%

You can ommit the Koolada or add whatever other cooling agent you prefer.

If you like it a little sweeter, 0.25% CAP SS does it good.

Im not sure the recipe is done in any way or form, but i like it so far.

EDIT: Give it 3-5 days to settle in.

My very first juice I bought was frozen hulk tears. (Description: Our famous sour watermelon apple candy backed by fresh berries on the exhale.) My first diy attempt was to clone it with the random flavors I had bought. Not exactly succeeded but i remember being insanely happy I made something. Any suggestions on how to revamp this would be a delight. This is also my first table on Reddit. Let’s see...

Co. | flavor | % --:|:--|--: FA | Arctic winter | 2 TPA | Berry mix | 4 LA | blueberry | 5 INW | lemon | 1.5 TPA | strawberry (organic) | 3 TPA | Watermelon Candy | 3

While a total hot mess at 18.5% flavor, I’m going to whip some up now and see how far I’ve come. Any suggestions on how to get this in balance as a comparison would be appreciated. Including proper subs as I have expanded flavors quite a bit since then.

1 points

by grim234over 7 years ago

Oh man, I totally loved that juice and have been scouring for clones for a while but never found anything that might work. I think I suggested it once in the monthly clone request thread.

by isuamadogabout 7 years ago

I've decided to revisit this project. Will post in the clone request thread. i've got two testers Im working on at ELR and they're both off from the original i can already tell. So I'm going to go off the profile and not the memory. we got this!

Axe the strawberry, maybe a harvest berry or Forrest fruit, maybe lower the lemon, double apple or Fuji ? if u have a better watermelon now or 2 even to help the watermelon stand up or Flv watermelon at 3% like in water malone ...? Looks like a great profile and I will try it as well. Also, very well done on your first table 👏🏻👏🏻

2 points

by lNTERLINKEDover 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

I was asked to make a cool mint watermelon recipe for a friend, and not really liking or knowing how to work with it, I tried a few combinations of flavours and settled on this:

Becky 1.0

  • 0.15 (CAP) Cool Mint
  • 0.15 (CAP) Honeydew Melon
  • 0.5 (FW) Jungle Juice
  • 0.25 (TPA) Marshmallow
  • 0.8 (FA) Polar Blast
  • 0.5 (TPA) Raspberry (sweet)
  • 0.2 (TPA) Strawberry
  • 0.25 (CAP) Sweet Strawberry
  • 0.75 (FW) Watermelon (natural)

It's pretty low on flavourings at 3.5% but is surprisingly juicy and flavourful. I'm not the biggest fan of watermelon, but I ended up going through 30ml of this pretty easily. I wouldn't mix it for myself, but it's a nice cool summery vape. Any advice/notes appreciated.

It should work with a lighter cream like a whipped cream but if you just mix watermelon with vanilla bean ice cream, probably not.

by djrider69over 7 years ago

Yeah I’ll probably throw a few testers together with whipped and maybe fresh cream.. seems like it could be a tasty profile if done right.. thank you for the suggestion..

Finally! A FOTW I can contribute to.

So I've been chasing the same watermelon flavor I had from a little hole in the wall B&M some number of years ago. The type of place that has $7 30mls that are almost all going to be single flavors. I have just recently found something close, and am psyched to have something close to vape the living shit out of until it gets old in a month.

TFA Watermelon - blech. Gets a lot of love online but much like other online celebs, it's pretty gross IRL and tasted like plastic.

FLV Wild Melon - Not so much a dedicated watermelon per se, but does play a huge role in many popular multi-note Melon recipies (As of late the notable Watermalone by Wayne). I get more of a honeydew from this (god I fucking hate honeydew so much) so it only gets used for my lady's cantelope honeydew recipie. ^(I hate when she vapes that in the house it gags me ew ew ew)

FLV Watermelon - Again personally I get the faintest note of honeydew but it's so much better than FLV Wild Melon to me. This is gnawing on the edge of what I was looking for from the house juice I had. Juicy, Vibrant, very "wet" feeling in the mouth ^^^^^(ha)

PUR Watermelon - Personal Favorite watermelon I've had to date. Very close to what I was looking for. Wet, candy like, juicy, somewhat artifical. Very good for the price point.

ONE Watermelon - Like a pickled watermelon rind. It's not great at all.

LA Watermelon Colorless - A pretty great candy watermelon flavor. It has a lot of uses in candy and sweeter melon mixes. Bright and vibrant.

Those are the ones I can remember using. Definitely try PUR and FLV Watermelon together, shits delicious.

What do people use to pad out their fruity watermelon juices?

Is Fa fuji an option? I picked up the easy ones to find ones like cap double watermelon and some others... i think I have like 5 in total. I also have wf watermelon jolly rancher but don't really want to settle for another candy vape.

Am I limited to honeydews or is there something I'm missing? (Like imagination)

1 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

People do indeed use Apple and pear flavors for that

2 points

by TheBorgerKingover 7 years ago

I never picked up a pear concentrate and I've come to feel like my fruit mixes fall flat for this. I don't attempt them often as I have little confidence in them.

1 points

by kindgroundover 7 years ago

Grab some FA Pear. It's great at sitting in the background but rounding out the other fruits and providing a bit of juiciness.

2 points

by kindgroundover 7 years ago

My biggest gripe with most watermelon flavors is density of flavor. They seem thin and well, watery. And a lot of them get harsh when pushed for density.

LA Watermelon seems to be a staple because it avoids this (a little) but with the compromise of candy.

PUR isn't bad but it's still thin. To me it wants to be candy but it can't quite get motivated to climb into a twisty wrapper. I find that 2:1 with FA (<1%) is really pleasant and almost as full flavored as I'd like without getting harsh for me.

FA is natural, thin and a bit rindy/grassy to me. It works well with apple, pear and other fruits to round it out. Especially ones with top notes that push that rind down. It gets super harsh for me if I try to push it for density.

Both FLV watermelon and wild melons are fairly new to me. I haven't sft them but they tasted pretty full in Watermalone. I'm not a big fan of melons so the honeydew notes put me off a little bit.

2 points

by Bassmuttover 7 years ago

Wonder flavors sour watermelon is pretty good. I prefer it over loranns for candy watermelon.
I keep a bottle of water-malone mixed up. I like it chilled with some ws23. And I've vaped a ton of strap-on and some variants of it.

I'm actually a big watermellon fan. I've gone from vape wilds straberry waterfellons, to golden state vapors hex and back to BDV's gentleman juice. I love watermellon. so my first diy order from wizard labs has watermellon extract and candy watermellon. hoping to find some nice mixes for them, if not I'll just add a bit of sour to the candy one and see how that runs for me. I also picked up TFA strawberry ectract so I can try a few things. my main goal was to clone naked 100's lava flow, so the watermellon is basically my fall back since I know how much I love it.

for my first order I grabbed

TFA sweetener

TFA Sour

TFA pinapple concentrate

TFA extra coconut

TFA DX sweet cream

TFA strawberry concentrate

TFA watermellon VG concentrate

TFA green apple concentrae

TFA blue raspberry concentrate

I'd love to see some interesting recipes for using watermellon with my picks, if there is anything worth trying.
