OK mixers, this is your thread to ask any questions you want of the DIY eJuice community. All posts are allowed, but we still encourage you to use the sidebar and search features before asking any questions.
- Placing your first DIY order and want to make sure you have all you need?
- Not sure about how to mix your first bottle?
- Want to get started but aren't sure how?
- Any other questions? ... then this is the thread for you. FWIW, the answers to the first three questions will eventually be found in the wiki (still in development); link at the top of the page.
Ask away!
No real question here, just posting because today is my vape anniversary. 4 years cigarette free. I had my last cigarette May 31, 2014 after almost 30 years of smoking.
I've been mixing about 18 months now and this sub has been really useful, so thanks all for your help. last, I still buy the occasional juice - one favorite I just can't clone ( to any master mixer I'd pay big bucks for a spot on Charlie Noble Vanilla Custard clone) and the occasional new (to me) juice just to see how it tastes. I think I'm done with that (other than the Charlie Noble). I've been disappointed with just about every juice I purchased and prefer my own mixes and the recipes here on reddit and elsewhere.
Not sure if this is the correct area for my question, but it is a question thread... Has anyone ever made a Werther's Original mix? I could suck on those things all day long and think it would make a tasty juice. Thanks
I've found that FA Caramel + FA Butterscotch and a decent dose of some of your favorite vanilla cream(s) sort of thing is very reminiscent of a werthers. Play around with the creams, but 1-1.5% each of butterscotch and caramel is a decent place to start. Much higher and it starts to taste too dark.
If you use the search feature at ELR you'll probably find a good place to start.
Try this link -> Recipes containing "Werthers" at ELR
Caramel candy tfa
Caramel original tfa
I haven't had a straight Wethers but I made a caramel parfait that's a good take for caramel. http://tjek.nu/r/7cbm
I’m pretty sure Caramel Original contains both fructose syrup and dye
so my roommate went and bout the liquid barn starter kit and I want to get in on diy too. we've got beakers and a mixer. I know I should buy pipettes and what not, but do I have to? like, these syringes say they're single use but can't we just rinse them out and reuse them?
aside from that where should I go to get my own set up I know I can get quite a lot of PG and VG from amazon at a seemingly decent rate, but what about nic?
You should lose the syringes, get a scale. And more bottles. And then read as much here as you can and you'll eventually learn something.
Why a scale?
How to mix by weight:
- Place empty bottle on scale.
- Pour/drip in nic
- Drip in flavors
- Drip in VG
- Drip in PG or PG alternative (optional step)
- Cap bottle.
- Shake the fuck out of the bottle. (NOT optional)
- Stash bottle for steeping (optional)
And that's all. No being a cleaning lady, No waiting forever for all the ingredients sticking to the sides of various containers to drain into the mix. It's just the proper way to mix.
Much faster, easier, cleaner. Just put the empty bottle on the scale, tare, drop first flavor up to the weight a calculator gives you (alltheflavors), tare, repeat until done with flavors, fill with your vg/pg, done! You will want one that measures with an accuracy up to .01g.
A mixer?
I'm an idiot. I buy pre-made juice (6mg) from vendors. I also buy 50/50 VG/PG 6mg to cut my juice to stretch it out.
This time I ordered 1 litre of 50/50 VG/PG with no nicotine. So I did a little research and realized that I need to buy some 100mg nictotine and to mix that into my litre to get it at 6mg. Which calculator do I use when flavors aren't a factor? Should I just pitch the juice and rebuy with 6mg like I normally do? I'm not much of a chemist but I have gloves and a scale if that helps. Any advice on where to get the pure nicotine and easiest way to mix would be very helpful.
Is there some kind of app or clever way to cross reference two or more people's flavor stashes, to pick out what flavors both parties have in their stash (for recipe collabs and stuff). It would be a cool feature to have on ATF or ELR, maybe paired with a co-publish recipe option that gives both users equal credit for a recipe/has both of their user names as the creators.
Anyways, is there any way to do this stash cross reference? Because it would be fun to do some collaboration mixing with people from the community.
I know /u/queuetue was working on bringing collaboration back to ATF. Being able to share credit and cross reference inventory would be great features to add to that. Maybe hop on the ATF Forums and throw that out as a suggestion.
ATF is seeing a pretty intense rework right now, including the collab mechanisms ... these are good ideas to put in there.
Awesome to hear that. I'd love to find out more about the new stuff coming or any changes. Been a supporter for a good bit now so it's great to see new stuff coming. Anything you can share?
Hopefully one issue fixed is that I can't actually follow any other mixers. I click the star and nothing ever happens.
Hello everyone.
I’m vaping a juice. When I open the bottle it has a wonder toasted smell but when vaping, it tastes toasted and biscuity. I’m not attempting to clone it. I’m curious into what would make that toasted taste. Any suggestions?
100% chance the flavor they are using is Solubarome Toast
Hey Guys, I'm a new vaper that's thinking about buying concentrates to start DIY:ing, I'm thinking 5-10 different concentrates, what can y'all recommend me to get and what do you like?
Edit: I'm into sweet shit.
Here's my thoughts:
Chocolate goes with many things. Mint, caramel, coffee, banana, etc. Caramel, which goes with chocolate, also works with coffee and banana and coconut. Coconut goes well with both of the above, and goes well with banana and coffee.
So, start out with a good chocolate, a good caramel, a good coconut, a good banana, and a good coffee, (and maybe FA Jamaican Special) and you can mix and match combinations to find something you really love. And they're all sweet(ish).
So, now go hit up flavor reviews on each of those flavors to find which make of each you most want. Write this shit down before you go order, you don't want to find all the perfect choices, and then order the wrong flavors because the place you bought from stocked INW Milk Chocolate instead of FLV Milk Chocolate.
Yes, this is completely contrary to the normal advice of 'find recipes that appeal to you and get flavors to make those', but it's more my approach.
Hmm you hit me with that banana which probably goes amazing with every berry on this planet. Didnt think of chocolate. Caramel is a must. Not into coffee, only coffee toffee, if that makes sense. Coconut sounds interesting. Which brand has the most authentic coco, according to you?
Unfortunately... FLV. But read the flavor reviews. Maybe you'll find what you prefer is what one of the other makes is described as.
Remember, there's basically a bunch of ways coconut is supposed to taste, depending on how ripe it is, and if it's been toasted and/or sweetened.
Are blueberry flavours any good? If so, what brand? I like blueberry. Strawberry also sounds aight.
Do you wash your e-liquid bottles after buying them ? If yes, how ?
Thanks a lot for the help. I wanted to ask. I exclusively use tobacco flavors. How can i know how to match different tobacco flavors? Or what are the guidelines to do so? Where I live, we only have TFA, Cap and FA flavors.
Trial and error.
I thought so, thank you
No problem. Another thing I do is look up recipes that are similar to what I'm trying to make and base my ingredients and percentages off of that recipe. I've only had one upvapable mix and it turned out awesome after a week steep. It went from tasting like some damn bug spray to tasting like the best glass of lemonade I've ever had
Eliquid recipes flavor profiles have a most used with section with other flavors, I'd use that
Well, other than ordering from where you don't live, you're kinda screwed. Those three aren't really much good at tobacco flavors. You could check with /u/chemicalburnvictim for some pointers as to what you could do with those three makes.
But really, do SFTs of the flavors you have. You should be able to recognize flavors that would work together.
I can't, we have very strict customs, not sure that they would let an order of food flavorings pas through. You know countries in the third world. I will check His Profile. Thank you. May I ask, what does Sat stand for
I don’t use those three very much at all. So the best advice I can give on the FA and TFA is if you really hate the flavor at first, try it a lot lower than other people use it. Like TFA Western and Turkish I’ll see people using above 2%. 1% is the most I can use for them without it ruining a mix. I think most people get it in their head that most TFA flavors are used high, so they use the tobaccos high. It’s too much for me. FA I would also keep below 1% unless you find that you like them higher. FA 7 Leaves and Black Fire I can work with, but the others just didn’t work for me. Burley might be usable at .25%-.5%, but I don’t have it anymore to test that. I’ve heard good things about the Cuban Supreme, but I quit buying FA tobaccos so I haven’t tried it.
On top of using the ELR flavor profile page for “used most with” you could add the flavors to your inventory (ATF also has this) and use the “what can I make” function. ELR will probably have more recipes pop up, but there will probably be a lot of bad ones.
SFT? Single flavor tests. Especially if your flavor memory is good, when you taste something that would go well with something else you've tasted, you should know.
Occasionally, flavors you wouldn't expect to work together do, but mostly, you can tell by tasting two things separately if they'd go together.
What country, btw? Mexico? Brazil? Mozambique? Canada? Chile?
I can’t seem to find very many mojito flavors by searching the subreddit or looking on ATF. Does anyone have any recommendations for a mojito vape? I only found one on the subreddit, which I will be trying tonight, but there’s plenty of commercial mojito juices so I thought I’d be able to have a few more options.
Minor FYI - FW Blackberry Mojito is in the same class of "not for vaping" flavors as their yellow cake. Kinda annoying to find that out after I'd ordered it, but at least it was before I'd tested it.
I was actually going to put that in my next order, I’ll rethink it. Thanks for the heads up!
There's actually a full list.
ATF is good - but don't forget about ELR.
Try this link . . . Recipes containing "mojito" on ELR
Getting security warnings going to Ecigexpress.com. I placed an order with them a few days ago and received the package today. Now I am a little concerned. I see they had security issues back in 2013. Since this is a questions thread...
Wtf?
Do any of you guys use nic salts? I recently started diying and I picked up nude nics smooth salts, mixed a bunch of juices at 9 (since I read that salts are somewhat less bioavailabile than freebase, and I usually use 6) now my thoughts are, no throat hit to speak of, which is a plus for me, and also no nic taste. Now the thing that I noticed is, it's making me chainvape less. Like I vape for a few minutes and actually feel like putting my vape down for awhile, whereas with regular nic, even at 12 I'd just keep puffing away until my throat was sore or I'd start feeling sick. Anyone else notice this?
Also holy hell is this cheaper than b&m juice. I spent 200 total on flavors and equipment and mixed up 10 bottles so far ( which would be 200 here lol) and barely made a dent in my nic or flavor stock. I've also discovered that I quite like not having sweetener.
I'm using nic salts to try to make juice for those little pod set-ups. I've found I don't really care for nic salts in my sub-ohm juice. It feels like something is missing. I think it would work well in recipes designed to be used with nic salts, but if I just take an old recipe and make it with nic salts instead of freebase, it feels... unsatisfying. Especially tobacco recipes.
If it's nicotine is less bio available and you compensates correctly you can't be missing that? Can you elaborate on what's missing/is unsatisfying please? Maybe you just didn't add enough salt?
It's just a personal preference thing, I think. That having no throat hit that's a plus for you? I miss the throat hit, to a degree. It's a specific kind of throat hit that you get from freebase nicotine, not from harsh flavors. Even really good, clean, smooth, flavorless freebase nicotine, you get just that little kick in the back of the throat. I almost hate to even call it "throat hit" since it's almost more of a feeling of fullness and "throat hit" gets used as a synonym for harshness. It's part of the experience, and I just miss it when it's not there. If I'm going to put nic salt in my sub ohm vape I might as well be vaping zero nic juice while wearing a nicotine patch. I'm vaping, and I'm getting my nicotine for sure. But something is still missing. I know the nic salts are in there and curbing the cravings, but without that immediate feeling in your throat with that first hit of freebase nic that precedes the actual nicotine working. I like that feeling and miss it when it's not there. It think it's part of the reason why vaping has worked for me all these years of being smoke free while other methods of quitting didn't.
Hello guys,
I've recently started to dabble with DIY juices and I'm trying to get my head round a couple of things, hoping the folks here can shed some light and offer advice.
I use a nautilus x tank at around 18 watts and tried the vampire vape attraction which is a 60/40 pg heavy liquid at 6mg (mtl) I love the juice and thought i would try recreate using their concentrates, so i added the ingredients using an online calculator, mixing at around 12% but the problems I'm having is.....
The flavour is a little muted by comparison and its burning if i try vaping it at 18watts, also its lacking the throat hit that the retail juice has.
It's pretty much a fresh batch so would steeping remedy these issues? Any input would be much appreciated!
Are you sure you're entering the ratio correctly? Switching from 60% PG to 60% VG would have the result you mention, as it would be thicker and not wick as well, and VG isn't as good with flavor.
Where's the June recipe thread?
Clearly not posted yet. It’s still early on June 1st.
As a few of you will know, I love my dessert recipes. I have quite a few under my belt but I've just accepted a challenge from a friend who wants 20 different dessert flavoured juices. He's paying me for my time and the ingredients so it's all worthwhile. I have a stellar line-up of various custard, creams etc and even some Turkish delight but I'm short of 20 by around 7........
Looking to you lot for some inspiration, not actual recipes, more just ideas.
Chocolate mousse.
Butterscotch pudding.
Spanish coffee.
Brie and fruit.
Baklava.
German chocolate cake.
Coconut cream pie.
Chocolate cream pie.
A Cherry Blossom (it"s like a cherry cordial chocolate, but bigger... and the base is a layer of chocolate with toasted coconut mixed in)
Big Turk bar. (Google the last two if you need. They're only in canada, I think.)
Mocha mint shake.
Häagen-Dazs Mayan Chocolate ice cream.
Shamrock shake.
Banana cream pie.
Maple pecan Danish.
Chocolate pecan pie.
Shoofly pie.
York peppermint patty.
Cherry Garcia ice cream.
And don't forget the cannoli.
Oh, and one last idea: Chocolate Salty Balls.
snickerdoodles
blueberry milkshake
fruit smoothie
anything with buttercream frosting
fruits/berries with whipped cream
Not sure if these are "desserty" enough, but summertime makes me want to go light a bit.
I’ve been wanting to try some good tobacco recipes and am considering ordering some flavors to mix up some of Fear’s stuff. What are y’alls favorites from him? His prapple baco recipe looks interesting.
Cardinal is the only one of his that I have had. Not a big tobacco fan anyway, but this is perfect for me.
I've tried some tobaccos and been very underwhelmed. Plus I lack the patience for the required steeping.
Then I tried a few of Flavorah's offerings, namely Red Burley, Cured and Native, and they were fantastic, especially the first one. And no real steeping needed. Whatever you're looking for, start there.
Forget Fear. /u/chemicalburnvictim does better. But Buffalo Burlington is intriguing.
Any recipe you’d reccomend?
I wouldn’t say that mine are better than Fear’s. I think that we have different mixing styles when it comes to tobaccos, so better would be subjective. His are probably a bit more accessible since he does a lot with the FLV tobaccos, whereas I use a lot of different ones that might require multiple orders. So if you’re just starting to dip your toes in the tobacco waters, picking a few of his would probably be a good start to get you a few FLV tobaccos. Like Abuela will get you 4 different tobaccos that will all come in handy later. Throw Red Burley in the order and you’ve got yourself a nice tobacco starter kit.
If you happen to be placing an order with Vapers Tek, you could pick up the three concentrates for my Brigade 2506 recipe which will get you three of my essentials.
The Duke
West of Paris
Three Cities
Duji
And this looks great but I haven't tried it.
I recently placed an order with Eightvape for the black 60 ml ldpe gorilla bottles they have on sale and I did not receive any tips(website specifies that they do come with tips). I tried reaching out to them to rectify but after no response I filed a chargeback with my bank. So now I’m left with 20 bottles with no tips. Does anyone know where I can get the tips from?
Thanks in advance.
Who is a good vendor to buy 50/50 VG/PG nicotine from and what strength would you recomend? I am just about to start making my own juice. I want to make my juice 1.5mg strength.
I have 3 10mL flavouring bottles from FA never oppened and they don't have the same weight. Is it normal ?
Yes. The actual specific gravity of individual flavors differ slightly.
I also really doubt most, if any, of the companies we order from have an expensive mechanical dispenser dispensing exactly the right amount into each and every bottle of every flavor in every size available.
I have a bunch of stuff in my online cart but I'm nervous about placing my order. I started to read into this subreddit a bit and got cold feet. I have all the flavors in my cart that I know I like and that are elements of what I've enjoyed before, and some new... along with a starter kit of syringes and pg and vg and so on. I was hoping this would save money. Should I pare down my choices for starting out? Honestly I thought it would be pretty easy but now I'm not so sure. Any advice?
Do not order flavors blindly. I can guarantee you will not have a good time with that. Find some good recipes in this sub and on All The Flavors (web site used for its juice calculator, recipe management and posting, etc) and order your flavors based on those recipes. No substitutions for different flavors either!
It’s much more worth it to start mixing by weight with a scale, but if you want to just try it out to see if it will work for you, syringes are fine to use.
Definitely seconding the scale. Even if you decide you don't like to DIY having a scale around is very useful.
You might need some syringes/pipettes down the road depending on how you do some things. Some flavorings don't come with a little dripper cap on it(can't remember the real name for the life of me but you know what I mean) and not just big bottles either. I got a bunch of 10ml bottles of flavoring from a company one time that were just squat little bottles with a screw top lid. Of course you can always just transfer those to smaller bottles and refill the old bottles with big bottles when you get to that point. They can also be useful for adding 100mg/ml nic to a small batch but you could just transfer a bit to a plastic dropper bottle and solve that as well. All that to say a couple syringes or pipettes might be nice to have around.
As far as ordering flavorings with recipes in mind I'd also recommend cross-checking recipes so that you are ordering flavorings that are only used in 1 recipes you plan on making. Instead get like 10-20 flavorings that are all used in multiple recipes. Down the road it is sometimes worth it to buy a flavoring for a single juice but when you just start out try to get ones that can be used in a lot of recipes.
all flavors aren't created equal. you can't assume your Vanilla Custard (TPA) is the same as Vanilla Custard (CAP) that's called for in a recipe. like there's strawberry that tastes like the fruit and strawberry that tastes like the candy. take Edibles advice and buy what you need, don't rush your order. build a shopping cart and post a screeny of it here if you want
Amazon has the popular AWS LB501 scale for $23.99 right now, including batteries and calibration weights. It weighs down to .01, mine works great. Take it from someone who wasted money on a bunch of syringes, graduated cylinders, and other stuff and learned within a couple of days I didn't want to do all that. Get a scale :)
Like others have said, I would invest in a scale as it makes mixing much easier. Mixing ejuice saves a lot of money but I initially spent a lot of money to mix recipes I didn’t even enjoy. Once you realize what flavor profiles you enjoy most and find some good recipes then the savings really start showing.
Going to buy one caramel flavour, which one to get? FA or TFA original? Or are there better options?
Caramel Original isn’t safe to vape. It contains corn syrup and food dye.
Get FA
Fuck. I just got a 30 ml in yesterday. Should I toss it?
No. Just squirt a bit in the next pot of coffee you make. Or better yet, wait until you make some hot chocolate and add a few drops to your mug.
Although, in this case... the tfa gcms results don't mention fructose, so whether it is or isn't present is a bit of a mystery.
What maximum weight would be the best for a scale. Max 100g ? Max 200?,
I found this one: https://m.fasttech.com/products/1410/10000893/1075701-precision-digital-pocket-scale-200g-max
It depends on what you want to mix. I have scales capable of 100g, 600g, and 3kg (all with .01g resolution) so if I feel like making a 2l batch at some point there's no problem. If you stick to 120ml unicorn bottles as your biggest batch, you don't need 500g or more. However, having a power adapter and no auto shutoff is more important than capacity if you aren't planning to mix really big batches.
How much did that 3kg scale run you?
How big of a mistake is it to not mix a full bottle? I made 20ml of D Cream into a 30ml glass bottle. I put it away for 1.5 weeks and it was very bad. There was no apple or vanilla in sight. I was just left with fattiness. Did the apple and vanilla evaporate away?
Room in the bottle is probably not why you don’t taste anything.
well...?
ok, i've read some of the sidebar now and you all have convinced me to pick up a scale and everything else I need from wizard. hitting a bit of a wall because I don't really know wht the difference pg usp and pg usp-nf is or if it even matters. I plan on making 30/70 pg/vg 3mg juice for myself
:edit: I've also noticed that one of the cheaper scales, smart weigh digital pro is on a huge sale on amazon right now. is it sensative enough to mix with or should I forget it and stick with the american weight labs scale?
This is the first I've heard of USP-NF, but it's irrelevant for our purposes. Either is fine.
I'm not sure which scale you're looking at, but if it's one of the flat, square, silvery ones for around $15, that is not a sale. That is the normal price and no one in their right mind would pay $50 for it. Either way, whichever scale you go for must have at least a 0.01g accuracy, 0.1g simply won't do. Note that auto-shutoff which is a common "feature" can be pretty aggravating.
It's the cheap option wizard sells. Something like $29 and it's on sale for $13 on amazon
I don't know anything about the scale that Wizard has, but I can vouch for the AWS. So many of the mixers here use it which is why I bought mine. And if you buy it from Amazon, if you ever had a problem with it, they would take care of it. But it is 10 or 15 bucks more expensive. Good job on reading the sidebar! As you are picking flavors to buy, check out the Flavor Reviews. Priceless info!
What is the "Shisha" part of the flavoring?? I've been mixing for a year mayve more. Always see Shisha Strawberry and the likes. Is it a tobacco note or am i way off point?
It's just a line of concentrates with certain properties, mostly syrup, molasses or jam, a soft and sweet characteristic. No notes of tobacco, these are used just like any other concentrates.
I can't say how authentic they are to the flavored tobacco you'd use in a hookah as I've only tried plain tobacco.
It was "flavor of the week" a year ago if you're interested.
I've bought Unicorn Vomit flavor by Flavor West and I want to use it standalone. Some says it perfect at 10%, others at 12% and other at 15%. I don't know wich one is the best and do I use specific gravity to mix or universal weight for all flavor. I found a thread about mixing by weigh with all data but I cannot find it anymore.
Edit: found the thread. https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/2iq3km/botboy141_guide_to_mixing_by_weight/?st=JHXF4LD3&sh=4c2fad77
The difference in weight is marginal, but for simplicity you can always use 1 ml = 1 gram, unless VG is involved.
As for percentage, you'll have to be the judge.
Ok thanks you, my base will be 100% VG so I guess I will do someting like 15g of flavour and 85ml (107,1g) of VG
No nic? Anywho, the other comment is spot on, you don't want to make 100 ml of an experimental mix. 5-10 ml is the most I'll ever do when I try something out, 30 ml if I'm very confident in the result. It's just wasteful and a pain in the ass to try to adjust a large flawed batch.
Hey guys,
I'm looking to make up a clean menthol juice, and have at my didposal....
30ml bottle of 30% menthol crystals diluted in pg.
30ml bottle of 30% ws 23 powder also diluted in pg.
Vg, pg, and nicotine.
What sort of % should i mix at for 30mls of juice?
