A flavor of the Week that's One in A Melon: Cantaloupe!
submitted over 7 years ago by ID10-T

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is: CANTALOUPE

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

This begins and ends with flv canteloupe. I don't know whether to consider the fact that this flavor doesn't play well with pretty much anything else a weakness or a strength.

On the one hand, this goes to show how perfect a replication of cantaloupe flavor this concentrate is, but on the other, the fun of mixing is totally taken away. In any event, if you want to vape cantaloupe, flavorah as a single flavor mix is the way to go.

Fa cantaloupe doesn't really have much flavor, other than rind.

Cap canteloupe is very candy like, and doesn't really taste of melon. It plays real nice with strawberry though.

I actually like FA cantaloupe a lot :/

I agree. The flavorah cantaloupe is highly dominant in a mix. I have been trying to tone it down and have reached tiny quantities and it still dominates. Pretty crazy

Oh and for something actually relevant to this weeks flavor. I don't like eating Cantaloupe. But a little in a melon vape is pretty dang good. I have Capella it works for no more than I use it. Cantaloupe is not a flavor I really need 10 different ones.

Ok... I don't get this - you don't like a flavor IRL so you try it vaping? This would explain why there's so much strawberry and vanilla flavorings, if this aberrant behavior is somehow typical... but why would someone choose to vape something they know they don't like? Seriously, I'd like to understand this.

Really? This ain’t Dr.Phil.... that’s not constructive, it’s nothing but your usual bs that’s just you looking for attention imo, but aberrant- great word!

by lNTERLINKEDover 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

Perhaps because flavours that we vape often have very little to do with their real world inspirations, taste wise.

Also, things that you don't like solo can be amazing in a mix. For instance, I'm not a huge fan of eating raw coriander, but I love it chopped and sprinkled on a curry.

Or maybe it's just adventurousness, or openness to change. Not everyone has a long list of things they dislike with a passion and that are to be avoided like the plague. I think your vehement and evangelical dislike of various things is the oddity, but hey, we're all different.

Actually I bought a juice once didn't realize it had cantaloupe in it and I thought it was good. Now I wouldn't vape a cantaloupe centric flavor I m just talking about a percent or so in a watermelon vape or something like that,.

Ah. So you tried it by accident... that makes sense.

FLV Cantaloupe goes really, really well with honeydew flavors. CAP honeydew especially. I'm pretty sure it's the key to mastering a melon hi-chew flavor in really, really small percentages. maybe even diluted.

I can't wait for the coolant noted unless you like them of course. Where's the fun in that. 😀

I hate menthol, but love WS-23. Polar Blast is ok, Koolada a little less ok. I’ve been told I’m not a man unless I try them all at 5%. RIP.

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

You need to include WS-5 and WS-12 for completeness.

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I have WS-5 powder but haven't had a chance to dissolve it in PG and play with it yet, though I have tried it in juices others have mixed. What % dilution do you recommend?

I didn't even know WS-12 was a thing until now.

2 points

by Bassmuttover 7 years ago

I like ws-23 haven't tried the others. If it ain't broke , ya know. Don't like menthol. A 1/4 percent ws-23 is plenty for me.

Haha 5% of any coolant is die hard.

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

I was using 4-4.5% of a blend of coolants at one point. Tolerance for cooling can build quickly.

Got a hint of FA Melon Cantaloupe in this lil melon tobacco recipe. It was my first melon flavor and I liked it so much that I got like 3 other melon flavors. Also using it alongside JF Honeydew Melon in a recipe I’m working on. Pretty ok duo. That’s all I got.

Melon tobacco is nuts. Nevertheless I would give that a mix if I wasn’t short an ingredient, just to be able to say I tried a melon tobacco recipe.

Two years ago I woulda said, “Get the fuck outta here with that fruity tobacco shit.” But here I am sippin’ on a Turkish Pipe and Mango in one hand and a Fruit Loops Sugar Cookie in the other and I’m thinking I should mix up some more of that melon tobacco.

I'm the same. My next excitement comes in 5 weeks - PEAR!

2 points

by cannibalnomadover 7 years ago

Have you tried FA or INA Pear? I like pears. It's a stretch but I wonder if u/Botboy141 has worked on that Juicy Pear recipe in these last two years and will bless us with something.

by MasterBeernutsover 7 years ago

Yes mate I've got both those pears - they are both excellent flavours and very different. I find FA Pear to be more like a juicy green pear - it's crisp and refreshing. I use FA Pear in a lot of recipes to add juiciness (0.5-1%). This can be used instead of INW Cactus if you aren't a fan of florals.

INW Pear is, to me, more like a golden/brown pear. It's not so suited in drinks/juices like FA Pear. I find it to be a very realistic, earthy 'warmer' pear. If you're after a mix with pear as the main event, then I'd use a mix of both of these - but pear seems to usually play more of a support role.

Cool, I've been waiting for this. I bought TFA as an impulse and used it in a recipe in place of watermelon and then got ridiculed for it here so I'm looking forward to seeing what people do with it.

by laffs_over 7 years ago

I haven't been mixing long but my best discovery so far and my go to juice when I'm working on other recipes is the following:

TFA Strawberry Ripe - 6%
CAP Cantaloupe - 3%
CAP Cucumber - 2%

Give it 48 hours for the Cucumber to blend into the background and the Soft creamy strawberry flavour to come to the fore.

Not so much a melon flavoured juice but the sweetness of CAP Cantaloupe really adds to the Strawberry in my opinion.

Yep, CAP Cantaloupe seems to do really well as a sweet stage for other fruits to dance on.

I don't really have the time (or spare bottles) to make multiple batches with slightly different percentages. Do you have a preferred percentage for CAP Cantaloupe in this context? What other fruit flavours do you believe it works well with?

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

No 3% looks good there. Goes well with mangoes, stone fruits, other melons, and citrus, as well as strawberry and cucumber

1-2-3 Jackalope

  • 1% FLV Cantaloupe
  • 2% TFA Jackfruit
  • 3% CAP Cantaloupe

A dense, mellow cantaloupe vape with fleshy tropical accents.

FLV Cantaloupe for that rind-free natural cantaloupe top note and some non-dairy almost-creaminess underneath. Under-rated, under-used TFA Jackfruit for an even fleshier body with soft hints of pineapple and mango coming though. It keeps things more interesting than just a straight cantaloupe vape. CAP Cantaloupe blends with the Jackfruit to keep the melon ball rolling though where FLV Cantaloupe starts to drop off in meloniousness and just fades into thick almost creamy softness. This flavor has a tiny bit of some sharp perfumey thing going on briefly in the top note in single-flavor testing, but FLV Cantaloupe is just completely overriding and obliterating that for me. This is the only version out of half a dozen experiments throwing different manufacturers' Cantaloupe flavors on top of this TFA Jackfruit/CAP Cantaloupe base that actually worked and made for a perfectly pleasant vape without any weird off-notes.

BUT, it feels incomplete - which is why the "In Progress" box is checked on that ATF link. Mostly it just needs to be juicier, but rather than going for one of the knee-jerk juicifiying reactions (INW Cactus, etc), I want to try adding pineapple or mango flavors to add acidity while also playing off those notes from the jackfruit, or if that comes off too just generically yellow-orange, maybe a juicier grape, cherry, or dark berry. I wouldn't recommend anyone mix up a big batch of this, but if you're looking to create a cantaloupe-forward recipe, give it try and see if it inspires you.

damn. wouldn't you know it. on my last flavor order I picked up FA cantaloupe just so I had at least one to use in recipes. Not a huge fan of cantaloupe vapes but you know - you try stuff. I should have went with CAP or FLV it seems. I went with FA since most (many?) of their fruit flavors are good.

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I know a lot of people like FA Cantaloupe, maybe you'll like it too? But after sampling them all, I'm of the opinion FLV and CAP are the only cantaloupes worth having. CAP for adding a thick, chewy body to almost any fruit recipe, especially "orange" fruits like mango and, well, orange. And FLV for upfront natural cantaloupe.

It though FA Cantaloupe tasted like cantaloupe rind wrapped around a melon gummy candy. It has a lot of body and isn't especially dry - kind of a surprise coming from FA - but the flavor was just a bit weird for me. I read reviews stating there was no rind flavor in FAs though - hopefully you'll fall in that camp.
