It's /u/juthinc's Vision of Hell: Vanilla as Flavor of The week
submitted over 7 years ago by ID10-T

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is: VANILLA

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Next week's flavor will be: Cantaloupe

I love the fact that /u/juthinc's tastes are meme level in this subreddit. His insistence on cooling in everything really made an impact on me though so I give thanks

Well, actually the insistence was on cooling those juices trying to mimic cold things. Of course, since practically everything I mixed at one point was beverage profile, and not often did I make hot chocolates, mochas, or coffee... I learned the hard way that a tolerance can be built up fairly rapidly.

And everyone gets to meme level eventually. Somewhere. There's worse places, and worse memes to end up...

by garamasalaover 7 years ago

I value your advice so I hope you don't think I was being disrespectful when referring to your tastes as a meme.

It makes sense what you say about cold things but it took me a while to get the experience and courage to understand that you were totally on point. I was initially very against cooling because I detested it in cigarettes like you detest strawberry but I gave it a go and realised that it's a very useful tool, even further than just making something cold because it's cold in 'real life'.

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Yeah, I actually found one recipe I worked on, the high level of koolada interacted with the flavors to actually make it closer to what it was trying to be. (When I subbed other coolants, it lost some of that.)

And no worries. I found the 'meme' comment entertaining. (Unlike a number here, I have a sense of humor.)

Wait, did you put koolada or ws23 on bakeries? :o I've been meaning to try it out and see if I can make a frozen brazo de Mercedes juice :))

Vaping bakeries just squicks the hell out of me. So no, haven't done that. I have never mixed a bakery juice.

Technically it would be the 6th circle of hell.

(And shouldn't there have really been a '50 Shades' worked into the title?)

And while we're at it, here's the fifth sign of the apocalypse.

Lmao. I'm gonna mix this up and leave a long exhaustive review. Would the forth sign of the apolocalypse be Vanilla Ice? ( ...ice ice baby)

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Well, it'd be interesting. My various testers for some unknowable reason seemed to like it. None of them, of course, gave me details. And crafting a recipe you know you'd hate is a real challenge... since there's no personal testing. So feedback, particularly detailed? Awesome.

2 points

Ok. Kinda thought it was gonna be honest feedback. Ya got me.

It was funny as hell tho.

by leapinglabratsover 7 years ago

Well this is a pretty broad topic and I'm not entirely sure what to say about it. How do you even describe vanilla? Here's my highly unscientific rambling on the topic:

Personally I differentiate between the dark, woody type, and the light and sweet. FA Vanilla Classic (Madagascar) is the woody kind that fits better in bakery or tobacco as a base note, while FA Vanilla Tahity is the sweet kind that goes better with creams and fruits and likes to sit on top.

Most vanilla concentrates however aren't plain vanilla and that limits their versatility. But while they all have a certain niche, they are often so good that it's simply worth picking them up. Some are even worth having several versions of, like Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. There is a pretty significant difference between TFA, CAP and FW VBIC, each has its use and can't really replace the other. There's vanilla cupcake, butternut, custard, etc and you can use them in bakeries for example, if the other properties of the flavor are desirable in the recipe. They are great concentrates for certain occasions, but you are still limited to a certain range of uses.

There are more versatile concentrates, such as vanilla swirl, vanilla whipped cream, french vanilla, shisha vanilla, holy vanilla, etc. They tend to come with a creamy or buttery touch, but predominantly a pretty potent vanilla. They still lack somewhat in body however, so you might get tricked into using too much of them, which ends up muting the hell out of the recipe. Get the vanilla notes from these and the body from other concentrates.

My personal favorite is plain vanillin. It brings the very top notes and only the top notes of vanilla, absolutely no body or base notes, which gives it maximum versatility. You can stick it almost anywhere and it won't mess with the other flavors, it just sits on top, doing its thing. For this reason however, it may be perceived as weak, depending on application. Along with ethyl vanillin, it constitutes the vast majority of the vanilla flavor in pretty much any concentrate. TFA describes vanillin as sweet, creamy, spicy, phenolic and milky. I describe it as a light whiff of vanilla, nothing more, nothing less. I have yet to get my hands on ethyl vanillin, but according to TFA, it's sweet, creamy, smooth and caramellic.

by leapinglabratsover 7 years ago

I suppose I could drop one of my old recipes that pairs vanillin with plain berries, just to show a use that might be out of the normal scope.

  • 0.5% FA Bilberry
  • 3% TFA Blueberry Wild
  • 0.5% INW Blackcurrant (or 1% MB Blackcurrant)
  • 1% Vanillin (10%)
  • 0.25% Koolada (10%) (optional)

Well I’ll be gosh darned. I’ve got all those. That doesn’t happen very often so I might have to mix it up since I’m going through one of those fruity phases I go through every so often.

by kindgroundover 7 years ago

Great advice on the straight up vanillin. Stuff has been used forever in candy for just these reasons.

2 points

by garamasalaover 7 years ago

That's an interesting point about the difference between VBICs. I cannot stand TFA but I recently picked up FW simply because it was dirt cheap, I'm hoping that it's better than TFA because it's too good a profile to give up on.

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 7 years ago

TFA VBIC is super heavy on the butter, pungent even. FW is lighter, much heavier on the vanilla.

2 points

by garamasalaover 7 years ago

It just tastes dirty somehow to me and annoyingly distinctive, it's probably that butteriness that is the issue though.

2 points

by mlNikonover 7 years ago

Its good but very different. FW vbic is lighter and not as buttery or rich. It seems a bit sweeter than tfa's offering though. If you are looking for something similar to fw I would go with lb vbic and a touch of hs french vanilla ice cream.

Boring. Plain. Uninteresting. Not very good.

From the definition of vanilla: "lacking distinction : plain, ordinary, conventional"

Do you have any tips about TPA Vanillin percentage? I have not found any clues about it at all.

Does it mute? Does it become too strong? Am I gonna die if I go up to 10%?

3 points

by leapinglabratsover 7 years ago

TPA Vanillin is a 10% dilution, around 1% of that is a good place to start. It doesn't mute, but if you go too high (above 3% maybe), it turns into sawdust which isn't very pleasant. The best use for vanillin is as a finishing touch to a recipe that is good on its own, as a complementary top note. If you want a full vanilla flavor, you should reach for such a concentrate, as vanillin will only give you part of the flavor.

4 points

by pasti_reggaover 7 years ago

Think I will post in new mixers thread cause I cannot make a simple vanilla cream thing at all, on my own.

Everyone seems to want eggy freaking custards all the time. Why would you vape eggs.

I fucked with vanilla a lot when I first started and then got burnt out on it. Started coming back around to it though. Mostly just use INW Shisha Vanilla if I want vanilla. It’s just so yummy and smooth.

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Same, but I've also ruined things by reaching for Shisha Vanilla. Wanted a warm tea with light vanilla playing with the top notes, put Shisha in there without thinking, wound up with tea stirred with a vanilla pudding pop.

Interesting, thanks. I was going to put a little bit of it into cherry blossom tea this evening. Maybe I should go a more milky route.

FLV Vanilla Bean for now but it’s still a work in progress.

I actually did a tea recipe with a hint of vanilla (it was peach ice tea though).

Used:

0.5% French Vanilla V2 (CAP)

0.5% Vanilla Swirl (TFA)

1.5% Vanilla Custard V1 (CAP)

and it worked really well for my taste.

Like a thick milk tea, though?

Can you shed some light on the other ingredients in that peach ice tea please? Not interested in the %s unless you're happy to share... but I had an amazing storebought version last year and would love to make some ground towards replacing it

INW Shisha Vanilla is king.

Too much TPA Vanilla Swirl makes fruits not as bright and kinda muted.

Been at almost a year and just found out the joys of vanilla swirl. I've had it awhile just hasn't messed with it much.

I used to add marshmallow to everything now I add vs to everything. It taste more like vanilla ice cream to me more than most vic's.

I like Shisha strawberry so much I will have to try this Shisha vanilla.

Does anyone know much about Vanillin? I've heard a lot of commercial juices use it , but I don't see it being used much in diy?

1 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

There are many. Vanillin and Ethyl Vanillin are the most common (and they show up in combination a fair bit... check TFAs ingredient lists some time) but there are some more potent ones.

FLV Smooth Vanilla? Am interested in this one. According to coop34, it tastes a bit like honey.

Honest advice? Save your money. I cooled on that one quick. Never even mixed anything beyond that one.

It was sent to me free to review, then when it went on sale at large I saw the eye-popping price. Totally not worth it IMO.

by patg55over 7 years ago

Cheers for that. Was going to pull the trigger. The fact that it tasted like honey was amusing though.

3 points

by Roc77over 7 years ago

I use vanilla to soften harsh flavour profiles and smear the flavours together. Often it goes with flavours you would not expect and can help round out a mix that otherwise would be imbalanced.

2 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Triacetin and Ethyl Maltol could accomplish the same thing, without the off-taste.

3 points

by kindgroundover 7 years ago

Do yourself a favor and pick up some plain ole vanillin. It fits in those situations where you don't want a complex vanilla. A tiny bit of straight up vanillin will make certain fruit mixes really pop.

I am so used to vanilla in real life, nothing in vape flavors blew me away, ever. Can someone give me ideas or tricks to make them.... good?

0 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Vanilla can't be good, by definition.

However, there are a number of more exotic vanillin compounds you could play with. The trick is they are insanely strong, so you can get outside of the window of application very easily with them. They get used by commercial (industrial level) operations, since you're looking at mls/gal to use some of them. But they will definitely give you a stronger and different from the vast majority.

3 years old, Mr. u/Botboy141? I mixed the last one in the beginning of January. Vaped it two weeks later, and it was good. and I mean, it was good-as-my-grandma's-mexican-custard good. But now, a little over 4 months later, the leftovers are bitter. It's on the list of liquids I'd guzzle in a couple days, but better not make more than 10 ml samples at a time so I keep fond memories of them...

1 points

Weird, I've heard many folks enjoying it after a prolonged steep (6+ months). The spices from the Catalan Cream come out more in the older batches I've tried.

I never know quite what to do with vanilla, I have vanilla swirl and holy vanilla but I find it hard to know where to fit them in. Vanilla, in cooking and vaping, is such a curious flavour. When I first started vaping I bought a bottle of vanilla juice and it almost made me puke. I see it as more of an accent, or additive even, than a main flavour, but I still think of it as one of the hardest to match with something that isn't custard.

2 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

You want to mix it with something? Try Bergamot, Menthol (or maybe wintergreen?), and Cinnamon. (IIRC, this combo - with vanillin - is what was supposedly used in original bubblegum IRL. Although the citrus was usually the key variant.)

2 points

by garamasalaover 7 years ago

Well it's just one that I've purchased to make a recipe and wasn't that impressed with and feel like my lack of experience is the only thing causing them to gather dust. I didn't even know bergamont was thing in terms of vaping but I'll try it with cinnamon, a logical choice and could be interesting.

2 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Actually, it was all four together that was supposed to create bubblegum. Not sure which version of each to use (other than I'd go with FA Bergamot, but CAP Juicy Lemon would work, or some orange or grapefruit could fit) or the percentages. ISTR seeing someone claim TFA Cinnamon Spice, but can't see that. It would completely drown out the vanillin (good) but everything would taste of cinnamon...

Is Holy Vanilla worthy of the massive hype that it gets?

2 points

by lNTERLINKEDover 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

In my opinion, yes. It's a great vanilla to provide a boost to other vanillas, and is absolutely delicious.

Some good opinions about it here:

It's mostly CAP Vanilla Custard V1....

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

No vanilla is.

But it's probably one of the top two choices to reach for if you absolutely positively needed to include vanilla in a mix for some insane reason. The other is INW Shisha.
